I'm 23 years old. I did listen to Genesis past year but man, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was something else, it kicked out Close To The Edge from my Top 1 album. The lyrics, you could make a movie with them. Btw, "It" is underrated. Keep it up with the outstanding content. Cheers from Argentina
It is a very good song. Check out Three Sides Live with It/Watcher of the Skies and In the Cage. It is my view Collins does a better job singing them than Gabriel. particularly In the Cage.
Coño!! Me too, 22 and listening Genesis since post covid and The Lamb its my fav album (Only Second because of The Empyrean by Frusciante). Its really magical and for some reason I really engage with the lyrical and musical narrative of the récord. Saludos desde Canarias (España) mi hermano hispano!!!!!
Genesis may be one of the bands with the least amount of arguing about the rankings. Sure, we might quibble on an album here or there trading a couple of positions but by and large this is spot on.
Not too sure about that. There are lots of fans that prefer the later stuff to the earlier stuff. There are fans who hate anything after Gabriel left. The horrors! They went more pop! I like lots from 1970 to 1992. Even the "pop" stuff! Anyway, my ranking: 15. From Genesis to Revelation 14. Calling All Stations 13. Trespass 12. Nursery Crymes 11. We Can't Dance 10. And then There Were Three 9. Fox Trot 8. Genesis 7. Lamb Lies Down (lots of good stuff, lots not so good) 6. Invisible Touch 5. Abacab (highly underrated and misunderstood) 4. Duke 3. Selling England by the Pound 2. Wind and Wuthering 1. Trick of the Tail From 11 on the rankings can always change
You make a good point. I always assume my audience is old and Gabriel era centric. Most Genesis fans prefer the Collins era - based on record sales, tour receipts and airplay…
@@TheProgCorner I'm 59. Duke was my introduction to Genesis. Then came Abacab. Friend of mine introduced me to TOTT, W&W and And then there were 3. Liked everything heard. Genesis album sinched it that Genesis was my favorite band and it's remained that way. Didn't always like some of the earlier stuff but lots has grown on me. In the Cage (which I think Collins does a better job singing than Gabriel). Carpet Crawlers, Watcher of the Skies, It, Fountains of Salmacis are some of my early favorites. I also love Gabriel and Collins solo stuff as well as Mike and the Mechanics. I don't think any band (including the Beatles) has produced more in total than Genesis and the solo stuff. Some of the best musicians of any band. Banks one of the top keyboardists, Collins one of the top drummers, Hackett a very good guitarist of which there are so many, and I think Rutherford is one of the most underrated guitarists/basists in music. I like new Genesis. I like old Genesis. Their concerts are amazing. For years Home By the Sea is one of my favorite live songs, but recently Abacab (in particular the 1987 Wembely performance) is just out of this world. It is a musical delight to the ears!
YESSSSSSSS!!!!! FINALLY someone who KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT!! The LAMB IS #1! Scott, that was a GREAT ranking. You have such a wonderful energy! Looking forward to more!
The first concert I ever saw was "The Lamb" in Chicago in 1974! Blew my mind! It is also the GREATEST album ever in my humble opinion! Great Video! Cheers!
My first Genesis show was Thanksgiving night at NY''s Felt Forum, then May 1974 at NY Academy of Music and December 1974 at NY Academy of Music for the Lamb tour.
One of my favorite bands of all time! They will surely be missed. I was lucky to see them this year in Cologne. I was in the same hotel as the band and met Tony and Mike at breakfast! I love all eras of the band (also Calling All Stations). But of course, I prefer the Gabriel stuff!
Really enjoyed this. Genesis Live is one of my all time favorite live albums. #1 for me is Foxtrot. Agree that "...And Then There Were Three" is underrated. "Down and Out" is such a great opening track!
Always feel ATTWT was very much a transition album. Not that's bad, or anything! Sounds very like a hybridization of styles. (I recall being fired from my first job- went home and listened to Down and Out, lol!)
I've been a MAJOR Genesis fan for over 30 years now. I really think your ranking was very fair and well argued! Of course there's still the never ending debate for the N°1 slot; Selling England or The Lamb, bit both are monumental. Thanks again.
Hey Scott, I just discovered your channel. One of my favorite all-time bands is Yes. It took a while for me to become a Genesis fan. I remember Duke when it came out. It wasn’t until years later when I checked out the 3 cd set. Disc 3 had the Peter Gabriel era on it exclusively and it was my favorite of the 3! Having, in addition to Yes, been an ELP and Rush fan, I think it was meant to happen! Anyways, we all have our rankings and you stated well why each one was at the position you chose and you made it entertaining! I look forward to finishing the Yes rankings!
Man, you're the best! That was fun. Brought back so many fond memories. My journey with Genesis started with "Trespass", and like you with "Genesis Live", I stumbled across it in my local record store not knowing a thing about them either. That's how it was back then, living in The States of course. Little did I know at the time just how impactful that purchase would become, it literally opened a whole other world for me. Think that was 1971 when I was in my late teens. Overall, my favorite Genesis albums are the Gabriel years as well, though I love TOTT & W&W too. Best way for me to rank them is based on just how often I return to them. That being said, here are my top five: 1. SEBTP 2. Foxtrot 3. TLLDOB 4. W&W 5. TOTT. One last thing Scott. You mentioned the incredible ending to W&W as one of their great moments. With that being said, here's something especially for your listening/viewing pleasure. Definitely worth checking out... for ALL fans of Genesis... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KhpY5cUQuI4.html
Great ranking man. For me after the holy trinity (Foxtrot, SEBTP and TLLDOB in chronological order) I would put Nursery Cryme and Trespass (yes I adore that even though it isn't Steve on the record, I think it has great guitar work from A. Phillips) and then TOTT and WAW. Keep going!
YES finally someone agrees with me, that suite at the end of W&W is one of their best songs ever. Especially that 2nd part, such a cool jam and it’s one of my favorite songs by them ever! Up there with Firth of Fifth and Dancing With the Moonlit Night and Watcher of the Skies and ofc Supper’s Ready
Like you, Genesis Live (1973, but released a year later in 1974 in the US) was my introduction to the band, and also like you it was the album cover that made me buy it. For me, this was bought in 1974, and then I spent the next several months absorbing their entire catalogue in reverse order, culminating in my first Genesis concert, the opening nights of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour in Chicago. I saw night two. The album hadn't been released yet, but an underground radio station had played side one of the album, which I taped and played constantly until the show a week later. I had rarely experienced so much anticipation for a concert before or since, and they didn't disappoint. Even better, they came back to Chicago again at the end of The Lamb tour and played the entire thing as one last hurrah for the US. 1. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 2. Selling England by the Pound 3. Foxtrot 4. Trespass 5. Nursery Cryme 6. From Genesis to Revelation 7. Wind and Wuthering 8. Trick of the Tail When And Then There Were Three came out, I went to see the band and then decided not to see follow them anymore. I had lost interest in what they were doing. On the other hand, I considered Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte (1975) perhaps better than any Genesis album.
Thanks for the comment. Solid ranking! Genesis is maybe my second favorite prog rock band. Invisible Touch is actually one of my favorites, and maybe because that was one of my introductions to the band. 80’s era Genesis is good and I don’t think it’s as bad as many say. Foxtrot is probably my favorite. Second favorite would either be Selling England or Trick of The Tail.
Its great to see a ranking very close to my own opinion. 'The Lamb' was my first Genesis album and will always be my favorite. Too many people approach this album wrongly. Whereas the story is important, its the music that comes first. And it is the music on 'The Lamb' that is absolutely incredible. Gabriel's singing is at its peak here too. I've never understood why some people have a problem with sides three and four. Side three is possibly my favorite side of Genesis music. I would place 'Trespass' above 'Wind and Wuthering' but its a close thing. Apart from that, your list is identical to mine. I still liked the band after Gabriel left but their narrative content suffered. Cheers.
Great Genesis Ranking Video! The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Genesis Live both were on a cassette tape that was given to me by a friend back in the late 90s, which blew me away hearing Peter Gabriel Genesis for the first time, and those two albums are my sentimental favorites. I then went on to buy as much Genesis as possible! All of my Peter Gabriel Genesis is on CD, and my Phil Collins Genesis is on Vinyl! They will be missed 😢
Great vid. I've suddenly become obsessed with prog rock. Gabriel Genesis are phenomenal. I can't believe the quality of those albums. I'd put Foxtrot at No.1. But as you said, sir, when you get to the early 70s stuff it's just down to personal taste as they're all brilliant. Subscribed.
Been listening to Genesis for 50 years. Selling England is by far their greatest album. The musicianship on the album is nothing less than spectacular especially Phil’s drumming. Close second is definitely The Lamb. Another incredible prog masterpiece.
Bang-On! I'm a bit shaky about Wind And Wuthering, perhaps I would rate it just a little higher. And yep, absolutely: The Lamb is their best. Crazy creative, gorgeous and soulful.
I’m late to this video, and enjoyed it! I recently watched some of those early Genesis videos with Peter Gabriel doing his performance art with all the masks and face paint - fun stuff! So much great music over different eras and styles. I’d have a hard time picking a favorite.
Love the self titled Genesis. The first side of Abacab is absolutely brilliant. Selling England by the pound is the pinnacle of Genesis greatness. I gotta give props to Trespass. Love the sounds. Wind and Weathering is the most soothing cd I have listen to. It just flows perfectly. For some reason, I have not been able to get into Lamb at all, or Duke.
How interesting that your early musical influences were Yes, Genesis ect. Def prog rock. I loved ELO from 1971-1976. My early formative music influences were The Beach Boys ( doo wop), Beatles ( British Invasion) and Motown ( R and B). Early to mid 1960’s. Keep posting man. Great job.
Your enthusiasm is infectious, and shows your total love of the music! Glad you had Lamb at the top. My choice as well. I always found it amazing that it was made in such strained circumstances, with Peter's domestic situation and his child etc....that it is not only a double album, but a LONG double album. Yet for me it is perfect. No slightly weaker material at all. And I am not sure I would apply "perfect" to any other Genesis album, as much as I love most of the pre-stadium albums. Though, you know, I am setting a very high bar there :) Brilliant watch, thanks. And Genesis Live was my intro as well. Like you, I saw the cover and thought: this must be interesting with a singer dressed like that! There was no going back....
Hi great Channel.Because of one of your Videos i discovered The Clashs London Calling.I usaly dont like punk that much but man what a great Album. Its a shame that we dont have RU-vidrs like you in Germany.
I remember really digging Genesis when I discovered Selling England by the Pound, Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme in high school, but The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway really made Genesis become my favorite band. It's something about the songs and the overall vibe to that album that hasn't been matched since. 10/10 band!
Just subscribed. Great presentation and fun video. Yeah, Genesis is amazing. Love them. Here's my ranking (and this can change any day): 1. Foxtrot 2. Selling England 3. Nursery Chyrme 4. Lamb 5. Trick of the Tail 6. Wind and Wuthering 7. Duke 8. And There Were 3 9. Trespass 10. Genesis 11. Abacab 12. Invisible Touch 13. We Can't Dance 14. From Genesis 15. Calling All Stations
Your videos are a real treat, and I enjoy your infectious enthusiasm! I'm glad that you rated And Then There Were Three so highly. It's a surprisingly strong album. I like it better now than I did in 1978. Much as I generally prefer Genesis with Hackett and Gabriel to Genesis without, I think And Then There Were Three is a stronger album than Wind and Wuthering, and I play it more often. (Minority opinion, I know!) However, I agree with you about the strength of the suite that concludes side 2 of W and W. It is indeed one of their finest moments. I would have ranked Calling All Stations higher than you did. (However, I completely ignored it when it was released and only heard it for the first time a few years ago.) It's hardly perfect, but I generally prefer it to much '80s Genesis. I like its moody, brooding atmosphere and it made me a Ray Wilson fan. Keep up the great work!
Ray Wilson is an amazing talent!!! It wasn’t his fault CAS was a little flat. But even still, it is better than i remembered!!! And thanks for your kind words. 👍👍👍
Thanks for the rankings. Great fun to hear your list and I admire your love for Genesis through the poppy and the proggy eras. My favourite is Nursery Cryme, which defines the band finding their true great sound, not quite refined, but all of the songs are of a high standard
@@TheProgCorner Thank You. I also Love Love Love YES as well. I saw them in concert during their 90215 tour. I've also seen the Moody Blues. I went with my Dad both times. I was in Jr. High.
I'm totally with you in most rankings except for putting Foxtrot first and The Lamb & Nusery Cryme as split seconds. And yeah, The Battle of Epping Forest is the greatest masterpiece of Selling England imo2!
A really interesting concert to hear is Genesis live ..a FM Broadcast recorded at Zurich Hallenstadian , Zurich , Switzerland, in July of 1977. The Wind And Wuthering tour. ...which hardly anything from the Wind And Wuthering album was performed live on Seconds Out. ...but this concert in Zurich covers several interesting pieces from Wind and Wuthering. The sound quality is good!! Incredible!! Another fine show from a live FM broadcast is at Hammersmith Odeon, London...1976. Bruford and Collins are smokin on this... Its really worth buying these and particularly for this line up . Historically its a treasure you will always revisit...
I definitely remix those last 7 Genesis albums depending on my mood. After Nursery Crime Collins drums definitely are something to listen to. I saw them tour the '83 Genesis album and I saw them again for the Last Domino tour in 2022. His son was pretty damn good on the drums in that show. It was sad though to see where Phil's health had taken him though. Great Band, Great Video man
Genesis: "The Lamb Lies Downa On Broadway" (1974) - Masterpiece! A wonderful, timeless album. I could write a book about him! Together with "Dark Side Of The Moon" - Pink Floyd (1973) and Tales From Topographic Oceans - Yes (1973) - The pinnacle of the possibilities of British culture of the twentieth century.
Very good selection. I prefer "Selling England by the Pound" and "Foxtrot" but "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" is excellent too!! So.. Ah "A Trick of the Tail" is in its place, very good album!!!
Great review Scott. For my preference, the only change I would make is changing the positions of Trick of the Tail with Wind and Wuthering; I just like it better 😀 I also like the 2nd part of Lamb a lot better than the 1st part. It seems a bit more creative to me
Greetings! You have Smallcreep's day up in the upper left and so you have ultimate respect from me, my friend! The first two that you showed are the ones that I used to see in record stores back in the day. That double album was even in cut out bins! By the way, I'm trying to post up the Mike Millard 10 CD Yes collection "The Word is Love" on my channel. Come and drop in for chat or you can listen to it once posted. I'm trying to do the whole box set. Take care!~Sebastian
Saw them do Lamb in 1975, (sunny Manchester England) the tour before Gabriel left ( I left with him) They did all of Lamb, then 1st encore was Watcher of the Skies and of course their finest few minutes, Musical Box they saved the best till last, Nursery Cryme got me into Genesis back in 1971, I bought it a few months after seeing them live in Feb 71, any LP with Musical Box on it just has to be the number one in my book
@The Prog Corner but it makes me soooo old too! I remember going to the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, I was broke and I spotted a gig for 30 pence...about a dollar, and you got 3 bands, so I got Genesis ..bottom of the bill, Lindisfarne and top of the bill Van Der Graaf Generator, Genesis managed Stagnation, The Knife, Hogweed and Musical Box they really looked like they'd just strolled in off the street,Gabriel told his mid track stories so that Banks could re-jig his Clapped Out Mellotron before the next song. That kind of naivity yet musical ability seems lacking today somehow? Not with all bands of course....ho hum...time passes quicker these days somehow?
I just got a Genesis vinyl lot with The Lamb, Seconds Out, Wind and Wuthering and Genesis yesterday. Unfortunately, Genesis is scratched beyond playability (It has now earned the nickname "Phil's Campfire Delight's" from all the crackling.) However, I listened to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway TWICE yesterday. It has since bumped Foxtrot from my No. 1 spot... amazing record
Top 5 1. Foxtrot 2. Selling England by the Pound 3. Nursery Cryme 4. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 5. A Trick of the Tail In the 80's they became Phil Collins backing band, such a shame. But Mike the Mechanic was happy.
I belong to the age group that was born in the early eighties. I didn't know the early Genesis albums when I was a kid. My father was a big Phil Collins fan and I also really liked Phil Collins' music. However, I discovered the old Genesis later in my teenage years. Since then, I know what progressive music is, and I dug into it very deeply. And then I have a message for all the snobs who hate Phil Collins just because he made more popular music. That if Phil Collins had not popularized Genesis, the later generation would never have known the old Genesis. I am an example of that. So you shouldn't hate it, but be happy that he made the band better known.
Enjoyed the ranking and I’m with you on a lot of it. You’re correct that their Top 3 is just splitting hairs, although Foxtrot is beloved to me and it’s my number 1. Regardless, their best three records are SO magic and immeasurably important to music going forward (prog or otherwise). It’s a true tossup for my second favorite between Selling England and The Lamb. One publication, possibly Stereogum, called The Lamb at its best “change your fucking life good”, which, since reading that, has always summed up that album for me. Thanks for the video!
I was agreeing with your countdown up until the final five. You made excellent comments. Great insights. My final five? 1. Nursery Crime (I'm in the minority) 2. Fox Trot 3. Trick of the Tail 4. Selling England by the Pound 5. Lamb
Great video n ranking my father was a huge Genesis fan when i was growing up and i guess that transferred over to me. My ranking goes 15. Calling all Stations 14. We Can't Dance 13. From Genesis to Revelation 12. Then There Where Three 11. Trespass 10. Abacab 9. Invisible Touch 8. Genesis 7. Wind and Wuthering 6. Nursery Crymes 5. Duke 4. Selling England by the Pound 3. Trick of the Tail 2. Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 1. Foxtrot
Two favourite prog bands: Yes and Genesis (in THAT order) - check! Favourite albums by those bands: Tales and Lamb - check! I like the way you think. Now I HAVE to subscribe. Keep up the good work!
Another fine list. The Lamb was my first Genesis album. Like you, I was a Yes freak looking to branch out and a record store owner suggested this album. It's not my number one album, however it will always be the album to introduce Genesis to me. Hey Scot, Kaprekar's Constant released a new album last week "the Muder Wall". Any chance we'll get an review on it sometime soon.
Ha ha!!! I was just listening to The Murder Wall and wondering why no one is talking about it. I think it’s the best of the three so yeah, a review is coming!!!
That record means so much to me. Most of the time when I discover a band all their good material is already in the rear view mirror. Not A Trick Of The Tail. Pure genius.
I belong to the age group that was born in the early eighties. I didn't know the early Genesis albums when I was a kid. RU-vid just putting this in my feed. Pretty good! Can’t argue with your rankings. YES used to be #1 band until I heard Seconds Out. And I wept with how perfect that music was. Agree that The Lamb is my fav. Glad you didn’t dismiss the 80’s era too hard. As a teen during that time, it was the soundtrack to my life. And was always over the moon hearing Phil on the radio. I take PC over Madonna, Journey, Prince, Wham, Culture Club, and everything else that was popular then.
Just watched your Yes review, and this popped up,..like yourself, my two favourite bands. My first album was Foxtrot, which I bought in 1972. I'd only read about them in the music press, and ,living in England there was not much TV or radio that played prog, so I went down the local Boots,..a large UK chain store which also sold records. I asked the girl behind the counter to put Foxtrot side one on, and went in the listening booth, unsure of what I was about to hear. After 2 minutes of Watcher of the Skies I 'd heard enough, so paid my £2.15p ( I was earning £8 a week at the time, so this was a massive outlay for an unknown ) and rushed home to play the album. The rest is history. I only saw them live once, in 1980, on the Duke tour, at The Mayflower Theatre Southampton, and did go off them a bit on some of the later stuff.
My first Genesis show was for And Then There Were Three. I almost went to see them the previous year on the W&W tour but no one else wanted to go and I was too young to drive!!!
Great video and ranking. For me is no. 1. SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND bought the album when it came out. My first GENESIS album. Today I listen most to NURSERY CRYME.
15 - From Genesis To Revelation 14 - Invisible Touch 13 - Genesis 12 - Abacab 11 - ...And Then There Were Three 10 - Duke 9 - Trespass 8 - Selling England By The Pound 7 - Calling All Stations 6 - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 5 - Nursery Cryme 4 - We Can't Dance 3 - A Trick Of The Tail 2 - Foxtrot 1 - Wind & Wuthering
No-one has ever ranked albums by sides rather than the whole album... So, here's my top 5 Genesis sides: 5. Selling England By The Pound (SIDE 2) 4. Trick Of The Tail (SIDE 1) 3. Trick Of The Tail (SIDE 2) 2. Foxtrot (SIDE 2) 1. Selling England By The Pound (SIDE 1)
Tis a good review, I enjoyed it. We agree on a few things - cept for me Nursery Cryme is the best. Duke is, yes, "trebly"! I had it when it first came out & was turned off by it. The trebly-ness. At the time it sounded like cheap Casio robotic music with no bass. But a few years later I bought the cassette version of it and got hooked. It's still my most played Genesis record to this day.
Great ranking 👍 My top 5 is: 1. Nursery Cryme 2. Selling England By The Pound 3. Duke (I am definitely in the minority here) 4. A Trick of the Tail 5. Foxtrot
Well, Genesis is certainly part of my holy trinity, and I've always lamented that "Calling all Stations" is so disregarded, because it seems to me that if this had been recorded by another band, the reactions would have been quite different. Not to mention some of the B-Sides (Anything Now), too. But I am also able to understand why there are these reactions, though de gustibus...:) Just for quick reference (I've never actually done a thorough ranking), with me it would look like this: 15. Abacab, 14. From Genesis to Revelation, 13. We can't dance, 12. Trespass, 11. Invisible Touch, 10. Duke, 9. Nursery Crime, 8. Calling all Stations, 7. Genesis, 6. The Lamb.... 5./4. And then there were three... / Wind and Wuthering, 3./2. Selling England by the Pound / Foxtrot, 1. A Trick of the Tail. Though I'm not that sure with the first three...today I would place them all on the pole, tomorrow maybe I'll change it aso. aso. Nevertheless the first one is just something else, a beginning,, Abacab for me is a misunderstanding (There must me some kind of misunderstanding...), the rest is outstanding (of course not every album is pure prog though I respect also clever pop). But as always, great clip, great ranking - sheer pleasure to watch You! Cheers from Cracow in Poland!
What a beautiful world where some people love stuff I don't! Tier 1: Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot. Magic so thick you couldn't cut it with Excalibur. No greater albums exist. Tier 1A: Selling England By the Pound. Could have made it but for "The Battle of Epping Forest" which got so theatrical that it forgot to be a song. Firth of Fifth may be their masterpiece. Tier 2: ...And Then There Were Three and Duke. With both PG and SH gone, they knew they had to find a new sound and what a sound! Tier 3: A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering. Great albums, but suffer slightly from the forlorn attempt to be the same band without Gabriel. These two are at their best on the ballads, "Entangled," "Ripples," "Blood On the Rooftops," "Afterglow." Also Trespass. All the greatness that was to come, just not quite fully realized yet. Tier 4: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Lord knows I've tried, but I can't make any sense out of this thing; some great music on it, namely, the stuff Hackett still plays, but otherwise, with apologies, I just can't. Also, From Genesis to Revelation. Nothing special, but quite listenable. Tier 5: Everything after Duke. Don't know, don't care. Most of the hits are bad enough to make me not buy the albums. An exception being "ABACAB," an awesome song that would have been a great addition to Duke. Never fear, my Yes tiers will be just as unpopular!
Pretty good rundown. Like they say we all hear things differently. Every album Genesis did had good parts as a whole or some. Here goes. 1. Trick Of The Tail- Collins and Hackett are amazing and the band solid, The first side takes me away with it and 2nd side rolls out tranquilly nice. So it's my no 1. 2. Foxtrot- The songs are good. One Of Gabriels best for my no 2. 3. Selling England By The Pound-Another of Gabriel's Masterpieces 4. Genesis -83- Really feel the vibe and the songs I relate to how they sound on this album. (minority opinion for the spot) I'm not changing. 5.And Then There Were Three- It is amazing how a band would carry on as much as I love Steve Hackett and they did so well on the album for me. I rebought it recently as I use to have it and remembered how well I did like it. 6. Nursery Crime- Yea an ok along Gabriel album given to the two that I have at 2 and 3. I like to a degree but just doesn't come to a go to album for me as others. 7, Trespass- I so love this album as the songs roll well with me and Anthony Phillips in the band here is great, I still go to the album that needs the appreciation it has in its sound to me. It's not around in top 5 as you see what proceeds there in this list. 8.Wind and Wuthering- I great sounding follow up to Trick Of The Tail. Starts out weak in first song before in the song it gets better. And the songs are pretty good and a go to album once in awhile. Hackets last before the surprise sounding to me on And Then There Were Three. 9.The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway- I know how iconic people have this high on the list. To me while it is fine indeed and Steve Hackett was in here and Phil in here The next top choice at No 1 would show the solid strength the band without Gabriel would be. I like Gabriel's solo career that would follow anyway and he proved well in Genesis before his pretty nice solo albums especially the first few. 10. Duke= Pretty nice album to make in the top 10. All the songs don't quite make it for me and as some on the album do. 11. Abacab- I like some in this album but wasn't an album that made a big impression on me. 12.Invisible Touch -Barely scratches the surface with me as we start going down a rabbit hole and the sound is ok but the songs didn't impress enough to me since that Genesis 83 album. Maybe I'm missing something but just seened a pop lackluster album to me. 13 From Genesis To Revelation-- There are some songs in the psychedelic prog rock sound of this album that may make some psychedelic song lists for me and once in a great great while I can tend to be in that mindset. 14 We Can't Dance- No Son Of Mine and Jesus He Knows Me. good tunes and the rest give or take not as good given what I just listed at this point. But I think there can be another song or two that go beyond the two songs I said. But this could have been the last album but wasn't. 15. Calling All Stations- What can I tell you? It's last for the reasons of Collins replaced by Ray Wilson not a bad singer and sort of Gabriel like but not able to sing like Gabriel full out and yea the replacement on the drums. Where drums on some spots is not too bad but the songs pretty much lack alot of what Genesis was, So yea it's last. HMS- the Great live albums you showed the 3 essential albums to have. I currently have that Genesis Live and Seconds Out albums. Never got to see them but enjoy watching on DVD or online and listening to the music we so love of them. What a long span of time for this band. Will Banks and Rutherford come up with anything in the future from Genesis? Time will tell but we got a good run of music to enjoy for generations. Cheers.🎤🎹🎸🥁🎶👍
I think this is a great ranking, the top 3 can change around at various times for me. What's always drawn me to Genesis and Yes are the great melodies and the best of their albums have the best melodies and bears repeated listening.
Poi WE CAN'T DANCE,INVISIBLE TOUCH, ABACAB, GENESIS, DUKE, FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION, AND THEN THERE WERE THREE, WIND &WUTHERING, A TRICK OF THE TAIL, TRESPASS, THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY, SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND, NURSERY CRYME, FOXTROT.
The Genesis live album was the first thing I heard from them. A workmate lent it to me but another mate said they were terrible. I returned it the next day to him and went straight out and bought it. Told the mate who said they were no good that he must be mad. So I lent him my copy and he came back in next day gave me my copy back and went straight out and bought it. From then on we were mad on them. I ditched them after Wind and Wuthering as I missed Gabriel's voice and felt they were becoming a pop band.
Hadn't seen this. Pretty right on in my book. I agree #1 and #2 are tough to rank, but for me it's Foxtrot simply because of Supper's Ready. As a whole album and body of work, then yes, Lamb. The other thing I'll mention...Calling All Stations. We play almost EVERY track from that album in rotation at Prog Radio. Why you may ask? Because when you hear just one song, mixed in with hundreds of other bands, you realize the songs are quite good. I think it gets a bad rap because it wasn't Phil or Peter, but if you aren't expecting that, and just listen to each song on its own, you may have a different opinion of them. For example, if all those songs had come out on a Ray Wilson album, with Tony and Mike as guest musicians, you'd probably think, "Wow, what a cool Ray Wilson album!" Keep listening to Prog Radio and when one pops up, you'll see what I mean.
Hi Bud... I was weaned on mid era Genesis, went with them till they seemed to become Phil's backing group? At the same time I went backwards to their early stuff. Really love all formations but I'm not as 'proggy' as many. Sacrilege perhaps but I struggle with 'The Lamb', 'Selling England' for me the tops and I'd put Duke a bit higher and even A T T W 3. Much the same on the rest. Thanks.
1. Trick of the Tail 2. Selling England By The Pound 3. Duke 4. Foxtrot 5. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 6. Wind and Wuthering 7. Genesis (1983) 8. And Then There Were Three 9. Nursery Cryme 10. Abacab 11. Trespass 12. We Can't Dance 13. Invisible Touch 14. From Genesis to Revelation 15. Calling All Stations
Was wondering when you were gonna make this video the other day actually, i predicted the future haha. When are we getting a Yes ranking? great content as always good sir
The later Phil Collins era Genesis is very good. Invisible Touch might be my favorite. Some time this year, I gave the original a listen, after Disturbed covered Land of Confusion.
15. Calling All Stations 14. Genesis 13. We Can't Dance 12. Invisible Touch 11. From Genesis To Revelation 10. Abacab 9. And Then There Were Three 8. Duke 7. Trespass 6. Nursery Cryme 5. Wind & Wuthering 4. Foxtrot 3. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 2. Selling England By The Pound 1. A Trick of the Tail
@@TheProgCorner I think Trick is Genesis's most consistent album. Some of the PG-era albums are arguably more cutting-edge and have higher high points, but they have a few fillers along the way. But every song on Trick is very good and often excellent.
1. The lamb lies down on broadway 2. Foxtrot 3. Selling england by the pound 4. Nursery cryme 5. Trespass 6. A trick of the tail 7. Wind and wuthering 8. Duke 9. ABACAB 10. Self titled 11. And then there were three 12. Invisible touch 13. From genesis to revelation 14. We can't dance 15. Calling all stations
I have to admit I love Genesis, but I dig Peter Gabriel's "Melt," more. Got the German pressing over here...lol The first album you held up, I got from a flea market! Gabriel's look on the cover transfixed me for months before I listened at 13 years old. The cover freightened me to some degree, which is hilarious as I was listening to Slayer's Hell Awaits constantly, which to a 13 year old should be scarier than Genesis. Chester Thompson, one of Zappa's best drummers.
"And the mellotron hits..." sounds like a great name for a prog box set a la the Nuggets box set. Lol Always loved Mike Pinder's use Mellotron in the Moody Blues.
This is almost impossible to do. I've tried to do a ranking and had to stop because I love everything in the 70's. If I listened to Foxtrot, then tat was the best, if I listened to Trespass that was the best. Just could not choose the best!!! ha ha 😎
"I kind of like it, I know I shouldn't." - Sorry, you are wrong here. If you like it, you like it. (So do I, accidentally.) (And I never even bothered to get a copy of "Calling All Stations".)
I have been a Genesis fan since 1980. They were my favorite band then and they still are now. Solid raking but Foxtrot would be number one. Suppers Ready made the difference.
Anyway, my ranking: 15. From Genesis to Revelation 14. Calling All Stations 13. Trespass 12. Nursery Crymes 11. We Can't Dance (a couple songs could go, but lots of good stuff) 10. And then There Were Three (very good stuff, but from 11 on rankings can change among albums) 9. Fox Trot 8. Genesis 7. Lamb Lies Down (lots of good stuff, lots not so good) 6. Invisible Touch (how can you not like Domino and Brazilian?) 5. Abacab (highly underrated and misunderstood: Dodo/Lurker great song) 4. Duke 3. Selling England by the Pound 2. Wind and Wuthering 1. Trick of the Tail From 11 on the rankings can always change
Besides Calling all Stations I agree with you although I love From Genesis to Revelation. But yes not Genesis . I start with you on # 9 , Then we were three I really love, good album. Duke is amazing but frankly it is a Phil's personal problems album, but a great magical album. Duke Suite indeed bro. Trespass was my first Genesis Album, brilliant, I love Wind & Wuthering is calm album but very romantic and not as original as Trick of the Tail . Nursery, Foxtrot and Selling are similar and absolute master works, no comparison. The Lamb is an Opera of Rock edged into time, cannot be matched and tell me : " Can you tell me where my Country lays?"
15 Calling All Stations 14 From Genesis To Revelation 13 We Can't Dance 12 Invisible Touch 11 Abacab 10 Genesis 09 Wind & Wuthering 08 Trespass 07 Duke 06 A Trick Of The Tail 05 Nursery Cryme 04 And Then There Were Three 03 Selling England By The Pound 02 The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 01 Foxtrot
I love almost everything by Genesis! Could you rank the solo albums of Phil Collins? I love his solo albums as well! I would love to see you rank them!
