Jesse, Luca, Thomas, Julia and DZ take a look at some of the most memorable goalie masks in NHL history, ranking them from 'The Greatest' to 'Left the Discussion.'
That skull in Calgary is so great, and that wide white stripe around the edges, it just wasn't something that a whole lot of goaltenders were doing and it made it stand out even more than the already kkiiller design.
@@bentheprop Well sometimes they subconsciously factored in the goalie's reputation which is why I don't agree with everything. The same is with Brodeur's mask. I do think that Hasek's mask was still better than Dryden's.
That Ken Dryden mask is literally the definition of iconic, leave it to the guy who associated Roy with the Avs to put it in overrated, despite how recognizable and historic it is. And I'm a Bruins fan lol.
Ehh, I don't think it's as iconic as you think it is. I would personally put it in purely nostalgia. I think it was Dryden that was iconic rather than the mask itself. Yes it can be recognizable, especially for that era, but it's not among the greats. It's also not the best looking.
The Cat mask should be hall of fame because back then it was one of the most intricately designed masks. Back then most masks just had stripes painted on them.
If you’re really Artūrs Irbe’s son, please tell him not only was the all white mask epic…the all white pads were too!! Definitely would be in the next list 😂
@@christyouredumb956 kind of have to be :D he said it helped with seeing the ice better in regards to peripheral vision, compared to the modern goalie helmet styles.
VIDEO IDEA: Based on the Patrick Roy "Canadian first, Avalanche second" discussion, do a video/segment of the podcast debating which team some Hall of Famers should be most associated with. In the way that Cooperstown inducts players as assigned to a specific team, discuss the team that guys like Roy, Messier, Chris Chelios, and Brad Park would be inducted into the HoF as players of. (I am basing this off of a Sean McIndoe article I read a while ago, but I would love to hear you guys debate it).
Roy won 2 Cups with Montreap also. With Avs he had an allsstar team and equipment was out of control at that time. Hasek for e example would be terrible in the 80s.
In my opinion, patrick Roy is a montreal canadian first. He won two cup, one when he was basically a rookie and carried the team in 86, and another one in 93 when he was insane. He won 2 conn smythe, 4 jennings, and 2 vezina with montreal and played there first and for a longer period of time. He is from quebec, playing for the montreal canadians. Here in Quebec, his legacy has to be bigger than in colorado. But it's fair to say he won 2 cups in each team and was a legend at both places.
You mean Patrick Roy didn’t start out crazy? My opinion is 100% skewed as a Detroiter who really started to get into hockey in 1993 but my opinion has always been that he was supremely talented and also borderline certifiable. It was also unendingly frustrating to know that the Wings scored all those goals and it was the catalyst to sending him to Colorado where he would haunt our collective nightmares for the better part of the next decade.
Patrick Lalime's Marvin the Martian mask is the best of all time and this comes from a guy who's favorite ever player is Cujo! Just the fact that Marvin wears an old Greco/Roman helmet and he incorporated it on his Sens mask kicks all kinds of ass.
The Tuuka mask is an easy hall of fame for me. It's easily one of the top 5 masks of all time in my mind, and it's one of the first masks I think of when I think of goalie masks. The way the brown brings a warmth to the yellow, black, and white of the bruins. The classy gold cage. The fact they didn't try to stretch the mouth out of proportion around the hole in the middle. The way it looks like the bear is trying to claw it's way out with the paws on the sides. The graffiti style "Rask" on the chin. It's got so many amazing little details
I wish Jonas Hiller's matte black with gold mask was included just to hear the discussion. Such a simple yet gorgeous mask that went in a different visual direction.
Rask is absolutely Hall of Fame. Yes, many goalies have the teeth, but they always have the mouth wrap around the face, which doesn't work well with many animals. Rask had the bear on the forehead only, giving the vicious bear a much cleaner look and adding almost a Kubrick stare whenever it pointed forward. Not to mention the sick integration of the design on the sides and the clean gold bottom the mask has because nobody had to paint a bear on it that looks like it unhinged its jaw.
true hahaha. I still think Cheevers's mask is the most bad ass. I feel like the airbrush style on a lot of masks feels like "amateur tattoo artist" and does not age well.
Jocelyn Thibault had some SICK Chicago Blackhawks masks, you also should'be added Murray Bannerman's Hawks mask. Just in genral you should've added some Chicago Blackhawks masks, they have had some iconic masks. Belfour started the Eagle in Chicago and the Red on Red was PERFECT!
Who would have thought a Toronto Media company would vote a Toronto Maple Leaf mask as the greatest of all time? You guys were even arguing about the design not knowing it was a dog. That should have knocked it out of the greatest. Cheevers mask (where the story is every time he was hit in mask they'd add a stitch), Lamine's Martian mask and Richter's Liberty Mask are all significantly better and iconic.
I always enjoyed Crawford with the hawks and then later on when he swapped home and away masks I liked that as well. I can’t recall who’s it was but the flame skull for Calgary or even just as pure nostalgia for the hamburglar or pink panther with Lou was a few that came to mind for me.
not even close to have the most swag amongst the modern goalies, its Hank by a mile. Most classy, most humble, sickest masks and pads. Noone is even close to Henrik.
Trevor Kidd’s Fire breathing dragon mask should’ve been on this list… Also, Markstrom’s lava/skeleton/rock combo mask should’ve been on this list… There was also an Anaheim goalie that wore a matte black mask, I believe with a gold cage that should’ve been considered…
The Roy debate makes me think y'all should do a video debating what teams certain players are most famous for. Like, Roy (MTL vs COL), Messier (EDM vs NYR)...
Dallas born and raised so biased, but Ed’s Eagle mask is the greatest to me but it’s hard to deny Cujo. I think it should say “the greatest(s)” cause how can that not be up there. Iconic
As far as the rest of the list, those sharks masks are from my era of growing up watching, perfect HOF candidates, almost wish they could be in the greatest as well. And The Marvin the Martian one is iconic as well. If cujo didn’t do it first the Bruin mask is top 3. And rays gets Honorable mention for the greatest because the font and colour scheme with the Tyson and Ali painted on is just so tuff and clean
Ron Hextall's Polar Bear Nordiques mask was before Cujo's dog mask and was incredible. I remember the first time I saw it my jaw dropped cause I had never seen anything like it. Shame it wasn't on here
2 Wings masks that should make this list. Mike Vernon's Wings mask is unreal. Also, Manny Legace's mask from like 06 was gorgeous. Joe Louis arena on 1 side. Olympia on the other. Octopus up top. Usa and Canada flag on the chin. Very underrated mask
Brodeur's mask and Hasek's mask are overrated. If any other player other than one of them wore it then it wouldn't even make the list. I think you're all rating them high just based on who wore them and not on their designs.
DZ, this is from a Vegas fan, Dryden's mask deserves a lot more respect, Luca doesn't know what he's talking about. What's one of things people think about when they hear Ken Dryden; The pose, not the mask, the iconic "bored" pose. How in the world can it be overrated? It is at least All-Star tier. P.S. When you talked about Niittymaki's mask, Poc pointed out that he likes the story behind the mask, yet you went into no detail about goalie mask before his (Gillies Gratton by the way, even though you didn't mention his name) and why his mask was designed. Gratton was inspired by a picture of a tiger in a National Geographic magazine, and had his mask designed like the face of tiger.
Cujo is clearly a dog it was named after the Stephen king horror novel and movie named cujo. And it’s Curtis Joseph’s first to letters of his first and last name.
True. It's supposed to be the best masks of all time, not the best goalies. I think they factor in the goalie's reputation too much as to not upset people.
Jesse always seems to have the most grounded opinions. on Roy, sure he started his career with the Habs, won and did amazing things, but he even sent his career to HoF with the Avs. When you think about Roy holistically, he's Avs
It may just be me, but Jonathan Quick’s knight mask is one of my favorite all time and I feel like it’s very iconic. I would’ve loved to see that on this list over some of the ones we saw in this video
I know I’m the only one who thinks this so hear me out I think Julia’s energy and enthusiasm would be perfect for the Buffalo Sabres broadcast team. She could either do the pre game, intermissions and post game with Brain Duff and Marty Biron or she could join Dan Dunleavy and Rob Ray in the play by play during every sabres broadcast. Julia is that energy that the sabres need to help make people excited when watching games on television and listening on the radio. Plus Julia would be an amazing personality as she brings joy and professionalism to what she does. I know that bardown is losing Corwin however I think Julia should make the next step by joining an NHL broadcast team.
John Candy had a character on SCTV... worked at a adult novelty shop... referred to himself as "the guy with a snake on his face" because he had a huge snake tattoo in the middle of his face, just like that mask.
Penguin fan here. Always thought Ken Wregget’s Batman Returns Penguin mask was the most iconic. I believe he only wore it for a game or two before the cease & desist order came from Warner Bros.
I'm not surprised it didn't get the most iconic because it looks somewhat like a pro Edmonton Oilers mask because of the O design pattern which is awkward to look at to say the least.
My favorite mask is Flowers Native American Heritage night mask from 2024. The story of the league saying he couldn’t and him doing it anyway, is pretty awesome.
The fact that Luca had never seen the mask from Ken Dryden before in his life is a bit mind blowing Lol as he invented the Goalie resting position while standing up ! .......
Mike Vernon/Husso (Red Wings), Mike Smith (Wile E Coyote), Bobrovsky (Columbus Cannon), Any Fleury Mask. Very few helmets from recent years on this list
For a video of mostly Canadian goalie masks I'm surprised to not see any awesome Canucks designs. And the Florida Panthers love-drought continues! Lot of lame duck masks were picked in my opinion but enjoy the content regardless.
