They are a band that defies easy classification but they remain one of the most important and influential groups in music history. They are Pink Floyd and they were awesome.
15: More - 2.5 14: The Endless River - 3 13: Ummagumma - 3 12: Obscured by Clouds - 3.5 11: A Momentary Lapse of Reason - 3.5 10: The Final Cut - 3.5 9: A Saucerful of Secrets - 4 8: The Division Bell - 4 7: Atom Heart Mother - 4.5 6: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - 4.5 5: The Wall - 5 4: Meddle - 5 3: The Dark Side of the Moon - 5 2: Wish You Were Here - 5 1: Animals - 5
I knew there would be a Pink Floyd ranking some day! Hooray! Arguably my favorite prog band ever. My list: 1. Wish You Were Here (greatest album recorded by man) 2. Meddle 3. Animals 4. Atom Heart Mother 5. Dark Side Of The Moon 6. The Division Bell 7. Obscured By Clouds 8. A Saucerful Of Secrets 9. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 10. The Wall 11. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason 12. Ummagumma 13. The Endless River 14. More 15. The Final Cut (Forgot about the Syd era for a second lol)
Scot, Scot, Scot…. The Final Cut is an absolute emotional and haunting album with moments that I cannot believe you did not give some credit to. Moments like the guitar solo on Your Possible Past with the touches of killer rock organ chords and thundering drums that make the hair on your neck stand on end. Or how about the sax solo on The Gunner’s Dream. And let’s not forget the greatest guitar and drum moment on the album: Fletcher Memorial…. You know the one…Boom Boom, Bang Bang, Lie down your dead…. The album is full of great symphonic moments, as well, with haunting low brass and breathtaking strings. I also love the laid back yet unsettling odd time signature feel of Two Suns in the Sunset. My complaint about the album is that Roger dominates the lead vocals taking away the variety that was present on the previous albums. If David were to have sang any 3 of Roger’s songs on the album, we would probably all like it a bit more than we do now. Anyway, I really felt like I needed to defend this great album that was not getting much love from the panel today.
Sorry Mark, but did you miss the tour Gilmour did for Rattle That Lock? I saw him twice on that tour. The first time he was better than when I saw him on his On an Island tour, but the second time he was on a different planet. I spoke to some ppl after the show and we all agreed that none of us had ever heard him play better on any album, bootleg or gig we'd been to. It might be the last time I hear him play, but if so, he went out at the absolute top of his game.
15. Ummagumma (studio disc) 14. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 13. The Endless River 12. The Final Cut 11. Obscured By Clouds 10. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn 9. More 8. A Saucerful of Secrets 7. Atom Heart Mother 6. The Division Bell 5. Animals 4. Meddle 3. The Wall 2. Wish You Were Here 1. The Dark Side of the Moon
Loved this video Scot!! Thanks to Wayne and Mark too!!! Of course, I don't agree with all your three opinions but I agree with many of them!! I think Roger Waters is the brains of Pink Floyd but I can understand you love more David Gilmour, he plays guitars wonderfully. My top 10 PF albums just for pure curiosity: 10 - A Momentary Lapse of Reason 9 - The Divison Bell 8 - The Final Cut 7 - Atom Heart Mother 6 - The Piper at The Gates of Dawn 5 - Meddle 4 - The Wall 3 - Animals 2- Wish You Were Here 1- The Dark Side of The Moon. See you Scot and thank you once again!!!!! PS: "Time" must be the best song ever, that intro, those lyrics, that guitar solo, that bridge on the end....
@@TheProgCorner of course not, neither do I, our tastes in music or cinema or literature or comics are very much our own!! I've always respected the others.
3 of the 4 members but missing the by far most classic member who wrote all lyrics and most of the music LOL Would be like Tull without Ian Anderson! LOL
My Top Floyd albums: 1) Meddle 2) Wish 3) Darkside 4) Division Bell 5) Wall 6) Animals Least favorites: 1) Endless River 2) final cut 3) More 4) Obsecured 5) The Piper
I absolutely love Piper. Totally different thing than the others so it is tricky to rate with the others but it definitely isn’t a case like the first Genesis record where it is totally different and not nearly as good. I think it is almost as good as their best stuff but in a totally different way.
You guys hit it out of the park. IMO, Pink Floyd's 2 most underrated albums are OBSCURED BY CLOUDS and THE DIVISION BELL. Scot picked OBC at #5 and both Mark and Wayne picked TDB at #5. OBC and TDB are consistent in quality and quantity, with OBC containing 1 bad song (e.g., final track) and TDB containing 1 mediocre song (e.g., opening track). The same cannot be said for any of the pre-Meddle albums, The Final Cut, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, and The Endless River.
Great show! The only thing better would be a ranking of the whole catalog. I want to especially thank Mark for giving love to AMLR and TDB. I love the Gilmour floyd. Too much hate on those 2, especially AMLR. They both went multi platinum and I find myself reaching for those 2 more lately.
You apparently listen to Rock and Metal Combat and believe 2112 was Rush's best, Van Halen with Sammy Hagar was crap, Judas Priest is better than Maiden, Tommy Shaw was Styx and Roger Waters was Pink Floyd.
A great show Scot ; Mark Anthony and Wayne discussing each Pink Floyd albums and ranking them.Pink Floyd have great classic albums.I like their debut album "Piper at the Gates of Dawn",but for me I love all their albums.
15. The Endless River 14. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 13. The Division Bell 12. Ummagumma 11. More 10. Obscured by Clouds 9. A Saucerful of Secrets 8. Atom Heart Mother 7. Piper at the Gates of Dawn 6. The Final Cut 5. Meddle 4. Animals 3. The Wall 2. Wish You Were Here 1. Dark Side of the Moon
To answer the question about why Ummagumma wasn't a double live album, blame Rick Wright. He wanted them to go and record new studio material without the constraints they'd had when doing More. Also, the playing with elastic bands and wine glases happened after Dark side of the moon! They planned an album called household objects, until Rick told Roger that it was insane and that was the end of it, bar the wine glases appearing at the start of Shine On you Crazy Diamond.
There is no filler on The Wall. It is a complete experience. But Floyd are still my favourite band. The only album I struggle with is The Final Cut. But it is also the only album I didn't listen to back in the day. I came to it some 20 odd years later. Edit: I completely forgot about the post Waters' albums. Still never listen to them either.
Yet another enjoyable live stream Scot👍🏻. Next week's Rush discussion should be even better so I'll be tuning in for that one. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the new Moon Safari album too. Surely it cant top The Chronicles of Father Robin as album of the year, can it? Peace, love, and respect sir🤘🏻
1. The Wall 2. Animals 3. Wish You Were Here 4. The Dark Side of The Moon 5. The Division Bell 6. The Final Cut 7. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 8. Meddle 9. Atom Heart Mother 10. Obscured By Clouds 11. More 12. The Endless River 13. A Saucerful of Secrets 14. Ummagumma 15. The Piper at The Gates of Dawn
Just feel I need to point out that David Gilmour actualy did the bulk of the vocals on the albums he was on before Meddle. Roger only does Set the controls, Grantchester Medows and If (not counting Several Species, lol!) on the 4 albums he and Gilmour both play on prior to Meddle. And Rick does half of Let there be more light (Gilmour does the other half) Remember a Day, See-Saw, Summer 68'. Gilmour does everything else. Animals is the first time a band member would do more vocals than Gilmour on an album that he appeared on.
I was 14 years old when I bought Atom Heart Mother in 1970. Ummagumma was my second Floyd album and I had all of their albums years before Dark Side. I thought the band sold out when Money was constantly played on the radio. Being a fan for 53 years, my perspective is different than you younger folks who started listening to them decades after the albums were released. 1. Atom Heart Mother 2. Meddle 3. Wish You Were Here 4. Ummagumma (love the live album and most of the studio album; I don’t care if everyone hates it, I’ve loved this album for 53 years.) 5. Obscured by Clouds 6. Dark Side of the Moon 7. The Endless River (when it came out I was having a lot of medical treatment and this album was my music therapy) 8. The Division Bell 9. A Saucerful of Secrets 10. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 11. Animals (starting to get annoyed with Waters’ direction he took the band) 12. More 13. Piper at the Gates of Dawn Can’t listen to The Wall (except Comfortably Numb) and The Final Cut. Not a big Waters fan. Everyone connects to music for different reasons. For me, it’s sometimes the memories connected to the music.
For me, PF made 6 excellent albums. Only topped by Gentle Giant that got 7 excellent albums. Here's my PINK FLOYD (6) list in order: 1. Dark side... (for the importance of this iconic album) 2. Animals (for Dogs! so good song with fabulous solos from DG!) 3. Wish you... (so atmospheric, so good guitar sound) 4. Meddle (for Echoes, so good mood, and those intro notes...) 5. Atom... (hard to listen to at the first try, but getting better with the time) 6. The wall (the concept is so great, beautifully recorded, the power of rock/politic thing)
All the things that allegedly make Obscured By Clouds a lesser PF album, also make it their best, in my book. It's simply a bunch of great songs with great playing and singing and it can be listened to no matter what mood you might be in. It also has the most Rick since (and after) Saucerful. I wish they'd made a few more albums just like it.
Pink Floyd had a song called The Embryo which unfortunately never made it on any of the 15 studio albums, it didn't even make it on Relics (compilation album) and I personally love it, I listen to The Embryo all the time, I think it's on a par with Astronomy Domaine and A Saucerful of Secrets. So yeah, it always annoys me how The Embryo isn't talked about enough. Another unreleased track I absolutely love showcases Nick Mason's singing ability as a lead vocalist is Scream Thy Last Scream, what an excellent crazy interesting song that is lol, the lyrics are absolutely nonsensical and don't make any sense whatsoever but that is exactly what they were going for. But The Embryo for sure is easily their BEST SONG that unfortunately never made it on any of the 15 studio albums IN MY OPINION anyway.
ev'ry album has arguments to be someone's favorite...that's the sign of true artists...somehow ev'ry album could be...underrated or overrated...in the end they're no truth...only opinions...and a bit of genius somewhere, that's for sure...it's all that matters folks...genius
Thanks Scot! it was a fantastic episode...at the end of a sh**ty weekend,it was like a spiritual cure for me! waitin' for the Rush one with high expectations!
Me personally, I’d rank them like this 15. Umagumma 14. The endless river 13. More 12. Momentary lapse of reason 11. A saucerful of secrets 10. Piper at the gates of dawn 9. Obscured by clouds 8. Atom heart mother 7. The division bell 6. The Final Cut 5. Meddle 4. Animals 3. Wish you were here 2. Dark side of the moon 1. The wall I have a big bias for Roger waters era Floyd especially the wall and the Final Cut because they’re the first two albums I ever really got into without being shown them by my grandpa, and my first two Pink Floyd albums. Division bell might have better music than the Final Cut but I really love the concept and sound of the Final Cut
My ranking (studio albums): 1. Dark side of the Moon 2. Wish you were here 3. Animals 4. The Wall 5. Division Bell 6. Meddle "I don't like anything Rogers does alone"! That's the right line here from Mark. INO the one who brought about the big change at Floyd was Gilmour. It is no coincidence that great masterpieces are generated after their incorporation. Obviously, the rest of the band is very important, but Gilmour made the difference.
For me "Atom Heart Mother" is the first great Floyd album, although I could do without "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast". Before that, I think they had some great tracks, e.g. "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun", but not particularly great albums. I even like "The Final Cut" and "The Endless River". Maybe the former means more to British fans as it was released shortly after the Falklands War, which gives it some emotional attachment. As for "The Endless River", I understand those who say it should have been a bonus disc with a remixed/remastered version of "The Division Bell". But I just see all these remastered albums as cash cows. Anyway my top 5 Floyd albums are: 5. The Wall 4. Meddle 3. Dark Side Of The Moon 2. Animals 1. Wish You Were Here
I'm enjoying this... but have just got to the comment from Mark about Fearless. Worth pointing out that You'll Never Walk Alone is a divisive song cause it's one of the best Football Anthems but is specific to Liverpool & Celtic. So the clubs that don't like them despise YNWA 🤣 As an Everton fan, I am one of them so Fearless is always turned off before the end by me.
My list and may be slightly controversial, maybe not! My list: 1. Wish You Were Here (greatest album recorded by man) 2. The Division Bell 3. Meddle 4. Atom Heart Mother 5. The Dark Side Of The Moon 6. Obscured by Clouds 7. A Momentary Lapse of Reason (thanks to the Updated and Remixed Version) 8. A Saucerful Of Secrets 9. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 10. The Wall (still enjoy but kind of burned out) 11. The Endless River 12. Animals (too angry for my current tastes and have to be in a mood to play and the remix was pretty bad) 13. Ummagumma 14. More 15. The Final Cut (the 2004 version with Tigers ruined it, the 1983 version was decent)
Top 10 for me 1. Dark Side of the Moon 2. Piper at the Gates of Dawn needs See Emily Play and Arnold Lane 3. Animals 4. Wish You Were Here 5. The Wall 6. Meddle 7,. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 8. A Saucerful of Secrets 9. Obscured by Clouds 10. Atom Heart Mother
Rogers voice is awesome! He was punk before punk with his disturbing timbre and phrasing! Sheep is more punk than any punk band came close too. That guy is insane ranking WYWH lower than DSOTM! Dark side is amazing for all the right reasons, but WYWH is 100% masterpiece. Animals gets better the older you get in life experience, but truthfully it’s Waters taking over at that point.
1) Animals 2) Dark Side of the Moon 3)Wish You Were Here 4) Meddle 5) Division Bell 6) The Wall 7) Obscured By Clouds 8) Momentary Lapse of Reason 9) Atom Heart Mother 10) Saucerful of Secrets Like you said, for me, the top 3 or 4 are interchangeable, and are some of the best albums ever produced. I put Animals as number 1 because of Dogs and Gilmour's guitar playing on that song, but Dark Side and Wish You Were Here could be number 1 on any given day. I think Division Bell is one of their best albums, and High Hopes is a classic Pink Floyd song. I saw them live on the Pulse tour which is perhaps the best concert I've seen. A Momentary Lapse of Reason is underrated. The Final Cut is not a good Pink Floyd Album, and glad it wasn't their final album. I like Ummagumma, especially the live album. I don't like a lot of Roger Waters solo stuff. I don't mind Amused to Death. I like Gimour's solo stuff, but it's missing that Pink Floyd edge. Obviously, the band was the best when Rogers and Gilmour were together, but I like Rogerless Pink Floyd much more than Waters solo.
Listening to this show now and loving it. Didn’t feel the need to comment until one of the guys said The Dogs of War is a great song. What??? That some is an embarrassment. There’s 3 good songs on Momentary Lapse. 5/10
What a great discussion, and I pretty much agree on a lot of the points made. So many amazing songs come from The Wall, but as an album it feels bloated and unfocused. WYWH is my favourite, followed by Animals and maybe DS? While I know Lapse of Reason doesn't hit the same highs as a Floyd record, there's some nice stuff on there. I probably do love the Division Bell more than most.
I'm gonna float the idea again - If they had released Atom Heart Mother (the track) on one side and Echoes on the other, that would have been the best Pink Floyd album. As it is, Animals and WYWH are top tier, DSoTM, AHM and Meddle just below, SoS, Piper next, most of the others fourth tier but Final Cut and The Endless River way adrift of the others as pretty dreadful.
Record Sales --- The Wall 23 Million ! --- DSOTM 15 Million --- Wish You Were Here 6 Million According to the masses these were Good Albums since they are the top selling Floyd records. 😂😂 I like ALL Floyd's music. I like Waters, I like Gilmour but the Sum of Floyd is greater than all it's parts.
Great show, here is my take on PF (gotta say I adore them) 5. Atom Heart Mother 4. The Dark Side of the Moon 3. Meddle 2. Animals 1. Wish you were here Don't like 67-69 period, not a huge fan of The Wall, hate The Final Cut (one of the worst albums ever,of course for me), since 1987 there were some brilliant moments.
Are Floyd Prog? Well, in the late 60's there were the progressive bands that Floyd were lumped in with, and from there they progressed. So in way, yes.
1. Animals 2. Dark side of the Moon 3. Meddle 4. Wish you were here 5. A momentary lapse of reason 6. Division Bell 7. The Wall The Rest isn't my thing but ok. But there are IMO three awful Albums: Atom Heart Mother, Ummagumma and The River.
Only sh!t floyd album is the endless drivel. Momentary lapse is good, the rest are all genius. 1.Animals 2.Dsotm 3.Ummagumma I disagree, the sound and cadence of all the albums( pre momentary )are all Waters and Wright. Gilmour had FA to do with it.
You guys are giving way too much credit to Polly Samson as being a main Pink Floyd lyricist. She wrote nothing on MLOR and was a co-writer only on six of the eleven tracks on Division Bell. Roger may be a pompous ass and take way too much credit for the success of PF but he could write lyrics.
