Seleucids is my fav faction in RTW hands down. Yes, starting position is a bit tough but the roster is amazing - they have basically the best of all worlds - outstanding pikemen, good enough legionares and deadly cavalry + elephants. The only drawback is the lack of good archers but hey, then they would be totally nuts. Late game Seleucids are steamrolling pretty much everything.

Man, aesthetics aside, Egypt has got to be one of my favorite factions though. The mix of powerful chariots (that wont run amok), skirmish and armor piercing light cav, incredible archers in the pharoh's bowmen, and solid pike support makes for some super fun armies.

I think for Egypt in Rome 1, they should have made it so that you can have both styles of armies (diadochi and Bronze Age), each military building has 2 types you can build, the proper diadochi one, or the Bronze Age one, but choosing ones blocks of any of the other type in that province, and after a certain amount of settlements with enough buildings, you get an event that allows you to choose between either keeping the Bronze Age but loosing out on the diadochi units, or the other way around. I also think the 2 types of armies should be very different in what they specialise in, eg diadochi means great pikes and decent cav, but trash low tier units and missiles, and bronze is great heavy infantry, chariots, and archers, but no pikes or cav (or very little pikes) maybe some sort of culture mechanic as well would have helped. Good thing modding is possible

The title is a bit misleading since you're rating the factions based on how much you like them rather than their strength. also, a lot of points regarding the starting position as well as initial strength only matter if the factions are controlled by AI since a human player can easily play around those weaknesses even on VH/VH. in terms of strength, S tier is clear, overall the best factions are Seleucids, Roman factions and Germania. Not only that these factions have access to some of the best units in the game but each of them is extremely flexible and overall potent from early to lategame. For me, A tier would be comprised of factions that might not be as flexible but that are capable of compositions that can easily defeat any other faction with minimal losses, even on VH. Here, archers are the key since they can consistently dish out enormous damage. Gaul, Egypt and Dacia each have both the best archers in the game (that can also get upgraded), as well as frontline units strong and flexible enough to defend such archers. Egypt has excellent phalanx while Dacians and Gauls have more flexible chosen swordsmen. Macedon, Pontus, Thrace as well as Greek Cities can also be very strong with the right playstyle and they all have hidden gems in their rosters. However, they require more micro management during battles and facing certain factions might get tougher at times. Of course Numidia is always Z tier.

Damn we really need a Head To head or Coop Campaign for the remaster. Would be sooo f..ing nice to Play carthage vs Rome or Greeks vs Rome.

I don't understand the rating for Scythia. They are S tier all day long. They can chew up cataphracts and Romans with head hunting maidens. The basic horse archer stats are better than Armenia and Parthia. And since the units have such low building requirements, they can go on a non stop rampage, a bit like the Huns or Atilla, sacking every city while able to retrain to full strength and keep right on moving. Hell, their horse archer units don't even need a stables....a tier one barracks 😱

For any faction the best strategy is: spam horseman skirmisher, like armies made only of them, and in battles surround the enemies first focusing on their skirmishers and archers. Then retreat when you run out of spears.

Other reasons to put Brutii and Armenia at the top is for them having the coolest faction symbols. I'd agree that the Seleucids have the strongest and most diverse faction roster. They really have all grounds covered except for horse archers, but they can make up for that with easy access to Scythian mercenaries in the north and Bedouin mercenaries in the south.

I play all factions and only one factions difficult for me to play that is Spain because all their infantry is weak including bull warrior the morale is low and cant hold long

Greek cities choice is based on his relationship with Rome during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. Syracuse, the kingdom of Pergamon, Sparta (and Achaeans) and Thermon (the Aetolians) all helped Rome in some of the most important wars. Not a very consistent choice but understandable I think.

Britannia is S tier, Carthage is D tier, Julii is A for me. Chariots for the first, bad unit roster and poor economy for the 2nd, and easy migration for the third.

Thrace, being next to the scythians, have no archers, making them qute difficult to be honest.

Don't the Bronze and Silver Shields have identical stats? Sounded like you think the Bronze have a disadvantage of some sort

Not a bad list overall. Personally i think scipii is much closer to brutii than it is to julii, although id probably put brutii and scipii in A tier. I also dont see how armenia is higher than seleucid or even pontus. The latter two have much better phalanx units and while seleucid does have a scattered start, at least theyre already on the mediterranean and with intent you can pretty easily fling an army out to rhodes to get that 40% naval trade boost, i think pontus also has a better starting position. Personally i also like the seleucid and pontid factions, id probably put them A+ maybe S tier, and id move Macedon to at least A tier. Oh also: seems you just don't like Egypt for reasons of historical context? It's pretty awesome within the scope of just the game. Great roster, pretty fantastic starting position, same reasons i think Seleucid is decent only without all the drawbacks of Seleucids start...plus the positive notes are even better for egypt

why would you put Carthage on the highest tier? all of their army is terrible and they must struggle to take Sicily or they are out of the game; their only redeeming units are Elephants and Sacred Band and they don't get temples to support their military

Scutarii are not quite equal to Hastatii unless they have experienced and/or upgrades to weapons or armor. But as a pilum throwing light swordsman it's pretty good as a starting unit. You think of the Legionnaires of eastern factions like Seleucids and Armenia and they don't get these units till much later. I've always liked Scutarii, and I regularly hire them as mercenaries even if I'm Roman.

With Scipii, you can easily steal Greece from Brutii while also getting Sicily and Carthage, a faster access to Egipt - giving you the best regions. Meanwhile, the Brutii get Greece only. Also, what's up with ranking Spain that high? They are the quintessential isolated faction and unlike Scythia who can abuse their cavalry, Spanish armies have NOTHING going for them - even their super unit lacks the armor of a legionary cohort which it tries to emulate.

You forgot to mention the beserkers from Germania!!

I don't know if anyone has noticed this but Macedon's emblem is more associated with Sparta. As a history buff this bothers me lol. But good faction nonetheless.

Tbh by the time you get things like cataphracts and silvershileds when playing Seleucids, you're already dominating the map. That's what happened to me. Got my first companion cavalry literally when I had reached Sicily.

If you are very good at battles Macedonia is unbeatable. They have early lancers that are useful the entire game, lancers can beat horse archers because of the charge and they move just as fast. If you are playing a campaign, Roman factions, Germania, Armenia, Scythia, are S tier, Armenia must be careful and take out Rome before the reforms. Greece migration works best for Armenia.

Very bad list, you must be drunk. Egypt, Seluekia, Julii Romans should all be top tier. So you are wrong.

But Armenia is a very weak country in online battles Very very weak Cataphract archer is a disaster(online battles) Legions are not strong enough And pikemens are weak but cheap Parthia is much stronger than Armenia
