Pete I'm 51 and never bought a beatles album and never heard any of their albums before. I have heard their radio playlist which is alot of songs. Watching your rating got me thinking I own so many bands entire catalog alot of bands. So after watching this I bought the beatles studio albums 13 of them. And they are fantastic. How did they not ever make a subpar album or even a stinker song? Brilliant material. I never got into them cause I always thought its not my style. Its too poppy or whatever. But great music is great music. I wasn't sure after I got all 13 where to start so I just listened to them in order of their release. I listened to each 5 times to get a good feel for each album before moving onto the next. Thanks again Pete for what you do. Gotta go gonna listen to the beatles straight thru again. Take care.

Although I love a lot of today's music, it isn't uncommon for a band to go 5 years between albums now. The Beatles did what they did, had their impact on the world and music, in these 7 incredible years of their discography. They changed everything.

The Beatles recorded more albums in one decade then Michael Jackson, my hero, did in nearly half a century! This fact is doubly incredible when you consider the immense quality of their output. Not a bad apple in the bunch. (Revolver is my personal favorite, and in general I prefer the later, more rock n roll records.)

@@brianfergus839 No I didn't. I wasn't including J5 records, which would bring the MJ studio albums to 25, making my statement wrong, since than he would have recorded more albums that the Beatles as a single entity, as some MJ fans draw no distinction between the two, for some reason.

I actually remember when some of the albums were new and I remember Hello Goodbye as the first song I can remember hearing! appreciate you, brother Pete! Here are the greatest Beatles albums: 1.Please Please Me 1.With The Beatles 1.Introducing The Beatles 1.Meet The Beatles 1.The Beatles Second Album 1.A Hard Days Night 1.Beatles For Sale 1.Help! 1.Rubber Soul 1.Yesterday And Today 1.Revolver 1.Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 1.Magical Mystery Tour 1.The Beatles White Album 1.Yellow Submarine 1.Abbey Road 1.Let It Be *apparently, the answer to the question "What are the greatest Beatles albums?" is YES! John Lennon is my favorite singer, due to just the right amount of grit and love that you can really hear his British accent. Something about that nasal tone-you instantly feel good hearing him sing-and Paul ain't far behind! I think we all will forever be amazed that two colossal talents like John and Paul ended up in the same band and the push and pull dynamic between them created artistic genius that will forever captivate anyone who hears their music. One of my biggest regrets in life is not being born sooner, so that I could fully experience what it must have been like, hearing this musical wizardry as it exploded upon a changing generation....lucky bastards!

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and the only two bands where my favorite album tends to change by my mood or what I'm going through in life. One day it could be Sgt. Pepper's, the next day it's Rubber Soul, and the next day it's Abbey Road. So great.

I had most of the Beatles discography on tape. Starting over on CD, my favorites determined my priorities: 1. Abbey Road, 2. White Album 3. Magical Mystery Tour 4. Revolver 5. Sgt Pepper 6. Let it Be. *The order shifts around from time to time but Abbey Road stays on top.) Those are the rock bottom basics, but it's not enough! There is too much good material prior to Revolver. Songs on Past Masters Vol 2 are indispensable, just for one example. Pete obviously discovered the magic with this band, and for so many of us, the creativity and positivity that just EXUDES from their work has brought us great happiness and, often enough, strength in hard times. There cannot be too much of that in the world.

At last! Thanks Pete. I would put Magical Mystery Tour at 1 but since it's a compilation here's my official top ten. 1. White Album ( every kind of music possible at that time is on here) 2. Revolver (beginning of the studio as an instrument period) 3. Rubber Soul ( beginning of mature period) 4. Abbey Road ( suite on side 2!) 5. A Hard Day's Night (classic Beatlemania at it's peak) 6. Pepper ( never liked it much except it does have my favourite Beatles song A Day in the Life) 7. Let it Be 8.With the Beatles 9. Help 10. Please Please Me (only a handful of good ones on this and I like the covers better on With the Beatles.

Remember the early albums were all recorded quite fast, a whole album within a few weeks, they were touring 8 months of the year, EMI did them no favours, they had to book recording sessions months in advance & have the songs all ready..

One song that I love that never gets mentioned is Lennon's biographical song about his relationship with his father, "I'll Be Back", which is the last track on the "A Hard Day's Night" album. There is nothing as potent as a 2 1/2 minute pop song. And this one has 2 great bridges. No nonsense. No fat. Direct and effective. And, as usual, a great vocal by John.

Not surprisingly, I am in total agreement with your top Beatles album picks! I think you have encapsulated this band and their music perfectly and completely, and it is no easy task to do that. They are perhaps the most difficult band to analyze and break down according to their different songs and albums. There is so much depth to them and the many phases of their music. My selfish reason for loving Abbey Road is it was really the first successful progressive rock album, and it paved the way for the use of synthesizers in prog rock. Thank you, also, for reaching out to your audience and reassuring us about the coronavirus and helping us as handle things. Your words are reassuring, and we are grateful to you.

Penny Lane is a pop classic ,and my fave BEATLES tune. lb. for lb. it's their best pop song. they were always a rock band at heart, but they wrote such great songs, they transcended R&R, kind of like one of their idols, Buddy Holly, who felt just as at home writing R&R, as he was writing love songs. and I only found out this week, that the tune is briefly scatological. 'finger pie' in England is a dirty slang expression for you know what.

Hey Jude was originally called Hey Jules written about Julian Lennon who was having a problem with his mum & dads poor relationship. Very good song.

The Beatles are the reason why we have many genres, including heavy metal, progressive, punk/new wave, grunge etc. I was never a big Beatles fan growing up because my parents never liked them. I stated buying the CDs when I got a good paying corporate job and Tower Records was going out of business. I have to say in general love the later albums higher with my favorites being in order: Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road, The White Album, Revolver, Rubber Soul, Hard Days Night, Please Please Me, Let It Be, Beatles for Sale, Help, With the Beatles, Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine. I didn't include other albums I have including the Anthologies (though would rank them around Please Please Me) because I am just thinking studio albums I also have them with Tony Sheridan and the Beatles Tapes which are compilations of interviews and not really music.

Very nice countdown. I've been listening to the Beatles again lately, and it's simply mind boggling that one band could have so many iconic songs that are so deeply embedded the mass consciousness of almost the entire globe. Wow, you are amazing. Thanks for your positivity in light of all this crazy stuff going on in the world. Like you was never a beatles fan until later. White Album my favourite. But every album has something for someone. Thanks for your passion about music, I find myself watching you review music I have never heard of, and enjoying it. Some I don't like some I discover and like. Thank you. Looking forward to a Roxy Music review one day!!

Hi Pete , this comment may rile up some of your followers but in my early days as a young boy I was more into the Monkees then the Beatles ( they had the tv show ,the Beatles had the weird cartoons) . Naturally got into the Beatles later ,favorites rubber soul ,revolution ( still love the Monkees though).

The White Album is so good. Like you, I knew a lot of the songs and didn't bother looking in to their albums until around the time of all of the fuss around the mono box release. Then I listened to it from start to finish and was totally blown away. I bought all of the albums (mono releases, where applicable) from Rubber Soul forward as this was when they broke away from the pop stuff and started making the classic albums IMO. Let It Be is a kind of EP, I would say, and has music written from before Abbey Road, I believe. I would consider Abbey Road as their final album.

Hey Pete, one more interesting observation. William Blake once wrote, "Prudence is a rich ugly old maid courted by Incapacity. He who desires but acts not, breeds pestilence." I would surmise that the Beatles were filthy rich with prudence.

I appreciate The Beatles now but when I was younger all I heard was my mother playing it. As people now I am a punk and what I didn’t know was McCartney’s possible influence on punk. I definitely hear it in Helter Skelter and ended up in a punk band who played it. For me my knowledge is limited so The White Album, I still enjoy this album now and played the whole thing only a few months back, Revolver, Sgt Peppers, Rubber Soul, Help, nice harmonies. That’s probably my knowledge out now. Also one of my favourite punk bands based their 3 part harmonies on The Beatles so their influence lives on to today through all sorts of bands from Bad Religion to Oasis.

My list is quite a bit different from everyone else’s. Maybe it’s because I’m not as big on the Beatles as most other people are. I like what I like and I don’t really base my opinions on what other people think. Also, I haven’t heard Beatles for Sale yet, so it won’t be on my list. So here’s my list. 11. Magical Mystery Tour Rating: 6.5/10 Favorite Song: Penny Lane Comments: I feel like people give this album a lot of credit because it had a big impact on psychedelic music from that moment on. The thing is, it’s too psychedelic for me to the point that the music just doesn’t fit it. A couple good songs, but for the most part, I don’t actively go out and play the whole thing. 10. Let It Be Rating: 6.7/10 Favorite Song: Let It Be Comments: I don’t have a lot to say about this one. Aside from Beatles for Sale (which I haven’t heard yet), this is the album I’ve listened to the least. I just remember thinking nearly all the songs were not bad, but mostly forgettable. Didn’t feel like a Beatles album to me. 9. Rubber Soul Rating: 6.9/10 Favorite Song: Drive My Car Comments: I used to really dislike this album, probably because it gets a lot of praise for reasons I still don’t understand. Now it’s grown on me a bit. I like “Drive My Car,” “Norwegian Wood,” “Nowhere Man,” and “If I Needed Someone” where I didn’t like them much before. But it’s still not an album I go back to very often. 8. The White Album Rating: 7.2/10 Favorite Song: While My Guitar Gently Weeps Comments: This album could be so much higher for me if it just cut a few songs that didn’t need to be on it. There are so many great songs on this album that it pains me to put it so low on the list for something like being too long. “Back in the USSR,” “Dear Prudence,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” “Julia,” “Black Bird,” Birthday,” “Yer Blues”-the list just goes on and on and on. But I prefer the individual songs over the full album because it’s a chore to sit through the whole thing. 7. Please Please Me Rating: 7.5/10 Favorite Song: Twist and Shout Comments: A lot of people seem to give less credit to early Beatles albums (the first 4 or 5) because the songwriting wasn’t as smart or deep or whatever. Here’s my point, though: Is it still fun to listen to even though it’s not as deep? Well duh. No, the songs aren’t compositional masterpieces and no, the lyrical content isn’t at all thought provoking. But it’s still a fun album to listen to. There’s something sweet about the simplicity of early 60s Rock and Roll. It’s just so carefree and easy to listen to-and that’s not a bad thing. I feel like people care too much about how smart the music is, and that undermines the whole point of music: To be entertaining. 6. Help! Rating: 7.5/10 Favorite Song: Ticket to Ride Comments: I have kind of mixed feelings on this album. I actually don’t care for most songs on the album, but there are just a few that really stand out, those being “Help!,” “You’re Going to Lose That Girl,” “Ticket to Ride,” “I’ve Just Seen a Face,” and “Dizzy Miss Lizzy.” The other songs are either forgettable or overplayed- *cough* Yesterday *cough* -Moving on. 5. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Rating: 7.9/10 Favorite Song: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Comments: Yeah, this is where I really start liking the albums. The only song on this one that I don’t like is “A Day in the Life,” which I know isn’t a very popular opinion. I like most of the songs, with the title track, “With a Little Help from My Friends,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “Getting Better,” “Fixing a Hole,” and “When I’m Sixty-Four” being my favorites. Every song is just a ton of fun and the album is like a little escape from reality for about 40 minutes. It’s great, but there are still a few others I prefer. 4. With the Beatles Rating: 8.2/10 Favorite Song: Till There Was You Comments: Again, I like the early Beatles work for its simplicity, and this is simplicity at its finest. I find it to be more fun than the first album, with songs that are more fresh to my ears, that make for possibly the perfect early 60s Pop Rock album. Yeah, it was filled with covers, but they’re really fun covers, so I’m not faulting them for anything. 3. A Hard Day’s Night Rating: 8.3/10 Favorite Song: A Hard Day’s Night Comments: This album is great. It’s short, it’s sweet, and every song is great. The title track is a total classic, “I Should Have Known Better” is a very fun Pop Rock tune, “If I Fell” is a beautiful ballad, “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Any Time at All” are two more classics, and “You Can’t Do That” is just a fun Rock and Roll song. All of it is fun and that’s all I’m looking for here. 2. Abbey Road Rating: 8.6/10 Favorite Song: Something Comments: This album has maybe the most iconic track listing of any Beatles album from start to finish. “Come Together,” “Something,” “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer,” “Oh! Darling,” “Octopus’s Garden,” “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Because,” “You Never Give Me Your Money,” “Sun King,” “Mean Mr. Mustard,” “Polythene Pam,” “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window,” “Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight,” “The End,” and, of course, the best song on the album “Her Majesty” (Okay, I’m kind of kidding, but I do really love “Her Majesty”). It’s really something special when I can sing every single song to myself on an album with 17 songs. This is probably the definitive Beatles experience, but I actually like just one Beatles album more than this one. 1. Revolver Rating: 10/10 Favorite Song: Taxman Comments: Yeah, this album is sweet, sweet perfection. I’m feeling pure bliss just thinking about this album. To me, Revolver is just a masterpiece. Every song is at least an 8/10, with most being 9’s or 10’s. “Taxman” is one of my two favorite Beatles songs. “Eleanor Rigby” is a Classic I’ve known since before I knew who the Beatles even were. “I’m Only Sleeping” is Psychedelic music done to perfection. “Love You To” is like the definitive version of “Norwegian Wood” for me. “Here, There and Everywhere” is a slower song to calm the listener down after the four-song-punch before it. “Yellow Submarine” is a song I still love, though it’s obviously a more basic song made for children. “She Said She Said” is more Psychedelic Rock perfection, and I still can’t tell which I prefer between this and “I’m Only Sleeping.” “Good Day Sunshine” and “And Your Bird Can Sing” are fun, basic Rock songs. “For No One” is another song that mellows out the album after the string of energetic songs. “Doctor Robert” is a criminally underrated song that’s just fun the whole way through. “I Want to Tell You” is very George-ish, and that’s a good thing (You can never have too much George Harrison). “Got to Get You Into My Life” is a very, um, passionate(?) song about a certain smokable. Kind of like a 60s version of “Sweet Leaf.” And “Tomorrow Never Knows” is maybe my favorite Psychedelic song ever. The drumming on that song is just so infectious and the sound effects fill out the sound perfectly. The whole album is perfect and I’m pretty sure it’ll be my favorite Beatles album forever.
