Green Death Personally, one of the main factors that sets early Pertwee stories above all other Who stories is the stunning experimental electronic scores of the early Pertwee stories from Delia Derbyshire's atmospheric pieces in Inferno to Dudley Simpson's Season 8 compositions to Malcolm Clarke's stunning Sea Devils synth fest. Silurians would be higher in my list if it wasnt for the awful Crumhorn.
I watched in suspense to see where The Daemons ranked; and I could not have been more pleased with "7." The Daemons was my first Doctor Who episode ever - back in the summer of 1972. I have been watching fanatically ever since.
I’ve often thought The Time Monster is underrated. I love the interactions with the Master and Unit (particularly the back and forth with Benton) as well as the King of Atlantis just laughing at hypnosis attempts. It just works well.

Brilliant, Chris. Your rankings are consistent and thoughtful-and this makes your content a genuine pleasure to watch. I think you've definitely got it spot on! I've always considered your top 2 to be the top 2 stories in all of Doctor Who's history.
As always I continue to enjoy your reviews. That being said my ranking of these stories would be completely reshuffled, not reversed but certainly different. But that's one thing I like about being a Doctor Who fan, the accessibility of other people's opinions.
Season 7 is my favourite of the classic era. Robert Holmes, Malcolm Hulke and Don Houghton stand head and shoulders above any other writers of this era. The third Doctor has probably the strongest set of regulars across the era than any other Doctor to this point and yes I include the Master and Mike Yates in that list. So my rankings are: 1. Pretty similar to my list, with us agreeing most definitely on worst & best! My main disagreement is that I'm very fond of "Day Of The Daleks!" Yes, on one level, the fact that there's only three Daleks is a bit naff (and as for the voice! Ohh dear!) but on another level, it demonstrates how conquered the Earth is that just a few Daleks are based there, with the Ogrons (it's best feature) along with a few humans such as the Controller, can easily keep things in check!
Interesting that Don Houghton’s two stories almost top and tail this list. And the top end of your ranking is predominantly Malcolm Hulke scripts. Hulke seems not to get the praise he deserves, yet his stories are some of the most nuanced, thoughtful and intelligent Who has produced. I’m intrigued by the thought of an alternate history where Hulke became script editor.

@@chris_stokes A curious one. I haven’t yet myself. Usually with the Nicholas directed ones, I’ve heard early edits. This is a bit of a mystery. There was only Tim, Katy and me in the studio; Michael was recording from home; and Nick was reading in (very entertainingly!) for Jon Culshaw; so I’ll be intrigued to hear how it’s come out. The main joy for me was recording with Katy - MY first companion… 😁

Looking forward to the third Doctors era. Not sure how I'll rank them. How do the Doctors rank for you at this point? In my new marathon, I'm in season 4. The next day or so, I'll place my season 3 rankings and First Doctor retrospective comments. Kinda surprising though, I've seen/heard what amounts to 270 episodes with Big Finish included and I don't think it's been quite a month yet. On my failed marathon last year I was worried about keeping up with you once I got to Colin Baker's Big Finish material...but at our different paces so far I think I can manage it. 😉
I always say Season 7 is overall one of the best seasons. Other seasons have bad stories, like Curse of Peladon, and great ones like Time Warrior. Season 7 really doesn't have a bad one. When your lowest ranking one is still in top 15 it shows you just how good it is.
Inferno is good, very good, however that little bit too long. Plus, not a story for someone who has never seen anything from the third. Demons has everything needed for a great story, and could be shown to anyone, even if they have never heard of Doctor Who, it's good against evil. Also it's a story that could have fitted any Doctor from the second to the seventh
❤❤ a totally don't agree with your list but I think you have some really good ideas there yes I would say invasion of the dinosaurs is a underrated gem though because of the special effects wise if they did it today would be a lot better but a really well written script I don't agree with you on the mutants so I think that's a really good story but yes I agree that there is lots of running around and going back and forth though but it's really a lot of fun Watch the documentary that accompanies it
I broadly agree with this! Pertwee's Dalek stories are rubbish, and its clear that Holmes and Hulke were the writing stars of the era, both writing some of the shows very best
