This video woulda been perfect if you saved yourself for last and then revealed an even higher tier and just put yourself in there and then ended the video
Anyone who argues with the list has not played with these guys enough time to judge correctly... That being said, In my opinion, will say Calvin and Dickerson should be swapped, AB is in world class, Clemons is 500+, and Colten is in the impressive category. For you Finnish guys, Seppo is in impressive category, Vaino is 550, and Oskari is world class. There is a few more that are on the 550 plus categories as well.
I'll never forget meeting you for the 1st time at The Memorial circa 2014 or 2015 maybe. After the tourney you and Simon were throwing huge flex bombs. You had ALL the distance back then and in my opinion your lines were a touch cleaner than Simon's that afternoon. I was super impressed. I can't wait for you to win your 1st World Title. It's gonna happen.
How often do these big guns throw themselves into hazards that normal guys can’t reach? All the damn time. 450’ with control and a great short game will win shit. Period. Drive for show-putt for dough.
Agreed. I love Calvin so I'm biased but he is an impressive distance thrower. I've watched everything he has on RU-vid. His laser beam ability to hold distance on a low line is world class. 500 long at 5ft high
Calvin likely doesn't throw 600 feet. 600 feet of power requires speed in the high 70s, probably 77+ MPH. I've never seen Calvin throw faster than 73 MPH, which is right in line with his 525-550 distance, accounting for spin and trajectory.
This is an incredible and insightful video, and I think I can add some additional info. Unfortunately, most of the companies producing disc golf content aren't using radar guns in their coverage, so we can only get speed data from Central Coast Disc Golf. I'm quite familiar with CCDG speed readings from the last few years, and unsurprisingly, Simon's anecdotal rankings are extremely accurate. I'll give a breakdown here of the highest recorded speeds for the golfers I recognize here, based on my recollection. World Class: Drew 80 MPH, Garrett 80MPH, Simon 80 MPH, Eagle 81 MPH (86 MPH roller) Surprising: Jordan 66 MPH, Emerson 70 MPH, Mcbeth 76 MPH, Oakley 70 MPH Impressive: Barella 78 MPH, Gilbert 73 MPH 550: Heimberg 73 MPH, Jones 73 MPH, Wysocki 76 MPH 500: Conrad 72 MPH, Locastro 67 MPH 475: Barsby 66 MPH 450: Philo 64 MPH, Clemons 64 MPH As you can see, with some variance, release velocity is an excellent predictor of overall distance. Some golfers get extra distance through a higher spin component, which accounts for the crazy drives Mcbeth and Wysocki achieve with their slightly-slower speeds. I completely agree with Simon that Eagle is the fastest thrower in the game currently, his drive on hole 12 at the 2020 MVP Open in round one was likely the fastest backhand throw ever recorded on camera. On a hole where top power throwers struggle to reach the tree line, Eagle's drive hit the trees 25 feet up while still moving forward at between 45-50 MPH. I suspect that throw was 82-84 MPH. One of the biggest takeaways from this video is that it's possible to be a top tier disc golfer with a relatively modest tool set. Extra power is always useful, but it is not a prerequisite for being one of the best players in the sport. Thank you for putting this list together Simon, it was great listening to your thoughts! P.S. Sorry for being pedantic, but you should be saying "farther" when you're saying further. Farther is used to express physical distance, while further is used for relative measurement. "You couldn't be further away from the truth" vs "I throw the disc much farther than you do".
Philo will always be one of my favorites. I think it was my second time ever disc golfing, and he happened to be running an instructional camp at Oak Grove in Pasadena, CA. He let me hop in and taught me the basics from putting to driving. I've run into him several times over the years and he always remembers me, asks me how I'm doing and whatnot. Just an overall S-tier individual. That being said I've seen him crush some drives easily 500ft+ lol
But, agreed. I was gonna do some fieldwork with my cousin and saw Philo in 16' in Dayton, OH warming up with cones and asked him how far he could throw. Without pause, he said "I don't know, how's this?" and crushed a destroyer 542ft on flat ground, in a field, with virtually no breeze. I measured it, personally, using my cousins bushnell because it was the first time I'd ever seen anyone throw that far in person. He high-fived me after I took his advice and added about 40ft to my throw from a pullback. It also happened to land exactly in front of a bush and wouldn't be hard to re-measure from where he threw. With that being said, this list is whack af. I'd imagine most of the low tier guys could rip 500-550 and Philo, with a good wind, could crush it over 550ft. I learned the x-step, pull back, bracing, and power box.. maybe 60-70% of my form is what I'd consider solid. I can rip a Boss/Shryke 450ft with regularity and I'm not a guy who practices his form. It'd be hard to imagine a seasoned pro isn't throwing for over 500ft.
This. I probably won't pay to watch USDGC, but if they had a distance competition, that I would pay money to see. Announce disc, weight, current wind and distance. You bet!
Maybe it's color-coded....who the f knows. The only thing he did is screw with the minds of anybody that he ends up playing with in the next tournament. I can see a few of these guys trying to "prove" him wrong and yanking a drive way too hard. I tip my hat to you, Simon. This is a master class in psychological warfare.
@@marcusmckenzie7610 i think the same.. i know few finland dudes trow 600+.. why they are not in list?? i dont want to take it for my ho,e country but i think oskari wikström is super whit eagle.. maby simon can do it too if he play golf not only simon stuf
Can you redo this, but with Putting? These are my personal critiques. Kevin is definitely Impressive, he throws 550 and slips on the pads more than anyone else. Ricky is also Impressive or World Class.
@@maxwellcrowe820 Yeah I'm seeing 6'3 - 6'5, but I mean he has been confirmed over 650ft before and honestly out of the "over 500" throwers, one of the most consistent. Can he beat Eagle and Simon, I don't think so, but he's easily Top 5.
I think Jomez definitely needs to broadcast something like that. An organized skills challenge with distance (backhand, forehand, and overhand would be sick) and a putting contest filmed and uploaded by jomez would get soooooo many likes and views
Bold thing to do, rarely seen on RU-vid. Kudos for that! Thanks for giving us something to talk about in a weird year. If distance only mattered, you'd have way different results in actual competitions.
James Conrad only at 500?? Are you joking? I would have James in impressive, and if YOU aren’t impressed, atleast have him at 550 because James throws BOMBS on the course!
Hey Simon, I think it's only because of you but I love Disc Golf right now and I just want to say thank you, that you brought it to me! Grad's from Germany!!
Simon doing Simon things once again😂 you got us all with the surprising and impressive category. What a way to confuse all of us. Nice idea though. Jeep having fun. Would love to see you throw in Germany once in a while
Hey Simon! Enjoying your season thus far, wishing you best of luck in the Championships! I think it would be awesome to see this tierlist, updated for this season!
@@Bigticket2510 it's funny because Kyle was at the Maine states. I played through a hole with him on my practice round and boy that kid can throw. He isn't Simon yet, but he's only 18. I had one of my best drives that day and he proceeded to obliterate it without even trying.
Great Video! Its awesome to have perspective from someone whose played with all these guys and knows what distance looks like. I agree with most of these assessments. Paul probably has the least effort-to-distance ratio of anyone which makes it surprising every time.
Great stuff Simon, thanks. I think we all agree that a distance competition needs to be an annual occurrence. It would be so fun to watch, especially in person. Please make it happen Jomez! Also, Calvin's throws hit different and should be ranked higher IMO
This is going to be hella controversial haha James Conrad is 550 at least And you’re telling me Calvin doesn’t throw 600.. BS Where you judging Greg by just his forehand. He’s not a bomber but breaks 500 consistently no problem with backhand Nikko 360 is one of the furthest full flight on camera shots I’ve seen. Yes, very down hill but still.. for his size, should be in impressive or surprising Jerm Oh boy can’t wait for next jomez commentary on Simon round. I actually agree but damn that’s funny calling him out Bump philo up a spot as well
Way to be vulnerable. That's an impressive action. You owned your own talent well too. I enjoyed the various categories; well done. I hope others emulate this.
finally ! its about time someone made this video and no one is more qualified than you. Also nice to see rankings based on ON THE COURSE distance during a tournament round.
if any pro disagree they can get together this off-season and throw it out and let's solidify this list. jomez can film these guys in a throwing tournament. we had a putting tournament during quarantine surely we can have a distance tournament now.
@@andrewfish4179 I bought some comets because of you as a fellow ultimate veteran. A few friends and I who are decent players took up golf over the summer and have got ok at it, but then shooting at the basket with ultrastars one day we were all hitting chains from all over the place. Ultrastars just feel like they're spiritually connected, even in the wind I can drop it into someone's hands from almost anywhere. Not even close to that with golf discs and really miss that glide. Anyway thanks for the inspiration and I'm hoping the comet can be my disc golf hack.
Switch Dickerson and Calvin. I've seen Calvin throw over 600 in a distance contest. Glad you did this! Loved your comments on Jerm, very funny. Hope everyone takes it all in good fun and no one gets too offended.
Albert Tamm (kaboom!) Dude reminds me of a world class hammer thrower. Man can he crush. Almost beautiful like a discus thrower. Plus shot putter. He’s basically an Olympian who plays DG.
@@Oryxxx Seppo is not in top 32 in pro tour ranking. Finnish players have been in Finland when Pro Tour has been played in the US. There is no place for Finnish players in this category.
I'm most impressed by Ricky...tho you said he doesn't have great form, he came back from the offseason crushing which has led to his reliance on the forehand off the tee diminishing. I was shocked at how improved his backhand got in such a short span...then again not shocked cause Ricky is so talented.
I'm really impressed by his back hand throws. He seems to really hold over the disc almost like he's putting but on his long distance throws. It seems so solid, like how the terminator might throw a frisbee.
I'm one minute in and I'm sure of 2 things: This is going to get a big reaction, and he really just wanted to highlight Thomas Gilbert's impressive distance at the Maine State tournament...let's see how I did lol *edit* OK I was off by a bit. Also yeah, the Drew Gibson snap is just one of a kind
The sound? The sound is just a sound. But seconding Thomas... I was on the bag for Kevin Jones at Goat Hill and how far Thomas threw on some of those holes was insane
Haven't seen much of Thomas Gilbert until the Maine State footage. That drive he had for the eagle on hole 16 (I think it was 16) during the final round was a bomb. Definitely impressive if not world class.
Great video Simon...and for opening yourself up to a lot of public debate of your “ranking” of the top players. You’re definitely world class...it’ll be interesting to hear from the guys on your list. keep up the great work and get into the top 10
Everything Simon said, I feel like I’ve said to myself when watching these players throw. Even his comments on Jerm and McBeth. This was an awesome video idea!!
I made a top ten list on one of the FB groups. Mine wasn’t based off top 32 pro tour, just people who you see on lead cards a lot. I’d like your critique of it Simon. -Alex Geisinger -Eagle McMahon -Drew Gibson -Simon Lizotte -Garret Gurthie (Not in any particular order, but that was my top 5) -Seppo Paju -Anthony Barella -Calvin Heimburg -Paul McBeth -Ricky Wysocki (This also not in any particular order was my 2nd shelf of the top 10)
Check out Gilbert and Gurthy round 3, hole 14, of the 2020 Maine State Championships. Both are clearly going for max distance and Gilbert out throws Gurthy by a good margin.
I guess Simon forgot that Gilbert beat him by 45 feet at the long drive competition during worlds last year. Also doesn't consider Kev world class even tho Kev threw farther than Drew in 2019 and won in 2018 besting Garrett, Drew, and World Record holder David Wiggins. Would be super interesting to see a distance competition in a big hangar with no wind to see what happens with all the big arms.
You all make us ordinary people look like children out there on the course. You make it look so easy and it's not. Very impressive how far you guys throw. Good Job Simon...
Simon dont say you hate doing it putting yourself world class, when i fist clicked on this video i thkught to myself who are the world class distance guys and my first thought was simon lizzotte and garrett gurthie, love the content simon keep it up
