Getting paid is a huge problem in the construction industry. Unlike other businesses, the “you get paid when I get paid” issue hurts subcontractors that are farther down the food chain. The only real solution is to find customers to work with that pay quickly and consistently. They are the ones you always say yes to. Slow payers move down to the bottom of the list. It takes time to know who you can rely on and who you can’t.

I can feel your pain about not getting paid in a timely manner--but not in the way you might think. I used to work for a company where I handled the Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivables. When I received an invoice, I would submit it electronically to the company's central check processing center. Most invoices are "Net 30 days", but the company's policy was to pay 45 days after the date of the invoice. Long story short, guess who got the phone calls from vendors looking for their money. I felt absolutely horrible but I wasn't allowed to say anything about the 45 day thing. When I raised the issue with management, I was told, "If these vendors don't like it, they don't have to deal with us. They can go elsewhere." Seriously????

Worst part about construction is getting paid. Every developer wants to hold there money as long as possible to make all the interest from the banks that they can. Keep up the good work!!

I say every time on a construction site that if anything falls, collapses, or crashes down there’s absolutely nothing a hard hat can do to save me.

I remember 40 years ago. when I was first starting a small business. The FIRIST advice from my new accountant. Don’t let your receivables get “out of hand”. It will put a new business, out of business, faster than anything!!!

Back when I had my first heart attack I got to watch the building getting put up next door in about a week they had three stories up when I left the hospital they had six in one month great video and great job with your truck and trailer and keep up the good work God bless you and your family from Georgia

💯 I’m in my third year of owner / operator of 4 axle KW T800 with a 4 axle transfer. It’s never hard finding work but it’s hard finding customers who pay on time. The majority of the customers I run for now are on a 30 day billing cycle and pay between 30 - 45 days. I’m in SW Washington state

Three decades ago when the construction business in this area was extremely competitive it was pretty normal to see excavation contractors paying all their owner operator dump trucks typically 60 days or more after invoice. I'm glad to hear things have improved since then. Oh wait now, three decades ago was the last time interest rates were also fairly high. Coincidence? 🤔

Oh yeah it’s like this for us too at times. Lord knows they want their materials or work delivered on time though. But god forbid you ask for your pay for the work done to be on time. Companies sure can drag their feet on that.

The largest reason I'm not fully independent is not being able to work for free, pay my expenses for that kind of time. Yet.

I was doing trade work servicing jewelry stores. It started out 30 days but by the end of that period of time it was a 90-day payout. It just killed me. Good luck young lady

I operate in Wales UK like you it's 60 to 90 days but when the work is a little quiet the big construction firms will push it to a 120 days some will pay weekly but want a 5 or 8% cut which is a bit tough to take when were constantly fighting for better rates. It's all about managing your money but sometimes feels like all your doing is robbing Peter to pay Paul.

60 to 90 days out to payday is tough. Hopefully it will all eventually come thru.

Had a debtors role - $1m in over 90 days when I took it over. Have a process to get your claim forms / progress payments forms out on a timely basis, follow up with who ever needs to be followed up on (we can feel uncomfortable with asking for money - it is yours though and you have a family to feed (yes I know you know that)). The "we will pay you when we get paid" b.s. is totally that. Your contract is with whoever engaged you, fundamental contract law, they are legally obliged to pay you as agreed upon in your respective contracts. Make sure those that owe you money pay up before doing more work for them - they'll probably use the "we'll pay you after you've done the next job" tactic - get them to pay BEFORE doing the next job. Interesting financial times are upon us, again - from experience, when the major contractors go down, they take many sub contractors with them. As those sub contractors tend to be small, they lose their homes, all to often, as they've used the home / personal assets as collateral to fund the business. Wishing you all the best.

It's good that you knew it was like that before you started. You give good advice to others who might want to enter the business. I suppose if that's the culture in the trade there, it will be hard to change it. If we had to wait that long, we probably wouldn't haul for them again until they paid.

Yeah I always love it when you pull on a job site and someone points "over there". "Over there" Is a big ass area.

When I had my dump truck business I learned who the slow payers were. I did not do business with them, period. As you said waiting for payment for work you already done sucks. And considering the contractor who owes you probably has already been paid.

gets a little irritating when a corporation expects you to pay for their service 30days or less but they pay bills at 90 days. For example a fuel company wants me to pay every 30 days but when they need my service it takes 90 days to pay.

Big building on that job site. A muddy mucky loads you hauled out. I understand what you are going through for bills. I work at a large company in the mailroom setting and see statements coming that I turn around to send out where they go. I have seen past due statements that are way overdue. Even in large corporations it seems bills do not get paid or miss payments completely. Everyone is affected someway on things not getting paid, even me that I have to watch over my funds for money coming and going Keep up the great trucking you are doing.

Man is it difficult when you just get started. I remember someone decades ago that had just gone from a regular paycheck job to buying his own backhoe loader and because I was a cheap plumber at the time I ended up working with him on jobs sometimes well after midnight. For over two years he went for 18 hours almost daily pretty much non stop, even on weekends, all to reduce the massive loan payments from starting his own business. On the other end I also remember working repairing electronics for someone who didn't send out bills more than twice a year. This was an older dude so he had enough in savings to not have to worry about day to day expenses anymore. Seeing him not stress at all over buying anything, even massive inventory purchases like several new plasma TV's etc, was very inspirational.

I’m very fortunate to be paid weekly. We turn in paperwork on the weekend and the check is ALWAYS there on Friday.

I sure you know what I am about to write. I have noticed that in the NW especially companies doing large projects slow pay the submitted invoices. The compaines I have project managed for use your cash to delay paying interest on allocated funds that have yet to drawn. These subs started adding penalty interest clause in their future contracts for delay of payment. This was done to motivate quick payment, while lessoning their exposure to possibility of default by the main sub or other subs who had contracted out work from filling bankruptcy before payment. The longer they could use your money the less interest they had to pay overall.

I had a excavation company out of mnt Vernon and I found that working on private jobs sucked to get paid but state and federal jobs paid on time so we mainly did the state and federal. But I know what you're saying because sometimes you have to take what you can get. Love the truck 👍

I had the same problem with getting paid with a prior contractor, sometimes up to 6 weeks! The guy I'm with now pays every Friday no matter how much it is!

Tilt wall jobs are cool. One day it’s flat concrete the next day a crane comes in and stands them all up and there’s a shell of a huge building.

payment time is always is a problem after 38 yrs diggin i've narrowed it down to those who pay on time or it ain't worth it I found my formula works

Most of our local building supply stores give you 10% discount for paying buy the 5th.

Takes us about 3 weeks to get paid hauling agg and asphalt for Pike in Maine. Pretty much like clock work...one of the other owner operators I work with hauls flo-boy dueing the summer and hsuls flat bed, wood chips and low boy in the winter.

I had a tri-axle Mack back in the 70's and yes pay is slow but after a year you kind of get used to 60 to 90 days. At times I worked for a contractor that paid every 2 weeks but at a slightly lower rate, at the time I believe it was $2 under the prevailing rate of $25 an hour, which worked for me. I know times have changed but I thought it was worth it. If you get to the point that you have multiple trucks, have 20% of your trucks haul exclusively for a quarry or sand pit that pays weekly or bi-weekly so you never have payroll or cash flow issues.

We in the UK are sometimes on 90 day for payment I set the truck running 30 days apart and private or cash jobs see you along for you setting that second truck on with a driver may be the solution

Honestly that is the biggest problem running a small business, cash flow can do you in even though your making money on paper

Depending on the job it depends on who you are working with.private contract or local state or federal state and federal government take a.long time to pay for the work

It's such a messed-up balance!! Being on your own gives you such independence, but on the other hand, you have to deal with this. Working for the city of Chicago, the payouts can be as much as six months. Don't let these contractor's screw you!!! They have the mindset that they have a team of lawyer's waiting to pounce on the little guy, who wants to get paid. You ain't the little guy. They hired you because you provide a service that they couldn't provide on their own! You got this, don't take no crap!

Same thing happens here in Australia. Sub-contractors always last to be paid. Not unusual to take 90 days to get paid.

I was in the dirt business in the 90’s and I paid my lease trucks weekly to insure I had trucks I needed

My Uncle + Aunt and their Kids had a Oil Rig Bit Company (refurbishing them - replacing inserts + selling new ones) and they weren’t getting paid sometimes up to 90 days+ out. They really got frustrated and got out of it. Now my Cousin sells Boring Machines going all over the World. Saudi Arabia, UAE/Dubai, etc. He makes a lot more Money now, less frustration too.

That`s why in The Netherlands where I`m contractors aren`t allowed to let the payment terms of small subcontractors pass 30 days. If you`re lucky, customers pay at 15 to 30 days, most of them at 30 to 45 days.

You should look into getting the vibratory add on unit for floor of your dump truck and trailer. Then you might not have to shovel as much stuck material

I starting to do pay per service We been doing pay by month for 10 years it's makes it hard to pay bills use one of invoice companies to make people pay for your services

That would stress me out being 90 days without pay into a company and then they don't want to pay

couple of things here - one: get on the phone and ask to be paid. if your invoice is net 30 call on day 31 - it's your business set your rules. Two - if you have habitual slow payers build that into the price. ie you bill your job for 100.00 but since they're slow payers you bill it out at 120.00 for them, built in interest for tardy payers. Remember "profit" is not a 4 letter word and you aren't a charity. Set the rules.

I run the port down here in Tacoma, and its slow as crap atm... Still waiting on pay to come in myself on some things. But, with a dump truck can you not factor any of your stuff, like we do with freight bills?

Here in Vegas, what I turn in for the month, I get in 45 days, so…say I turn in 160 hours for February, I’ll get that check on April 15

I have been self employed in residential and commercial construction business. I have found the deadbeats that like on your money respond best to a phone call, stating "I would like to be paid please" The longer you wait the harder it is to collect. The worst is GE. Sometimes 120 day. Keep your money drawn up. Advice I was given Before I began my business in 1977.

Ahh, yes ... the joys of dirt hauling. Here around the capitol of Calipornia, if you had your own hole in the road you poured money in to, or if you worked as a driver for a Mom & Pop operation, the settlement was once a month, one month behind. Sorry to hear about how it is where you are. (Is it a government contract?) Unfortunately, I think those days are about to disappear as CARB (Calipornia Air Resources Board) has basically outlawed older diesel tractors which have been the life blood of owner-operators for over a hundred years or so, as they're affordable, fixable and plentiful. I may' have kept my single screw '74 KW W-900 day cab clean and so forth, but there was no way I was ever going to take a brand, spanking new[ish] tractor where I had to go. Even with a 4 bagger on the drive and an adjustable 2 bagger on the steer. Has anyone ever considered charging interest and/or a late fee on money owed? Or are they so well connected to the muckety mucks at the state capitol they'll drop you like a hot potato and just move on to the next poor trucker in line?

Dauminique You may want to look into account factoring. There are companies that specialize in trucking and construction. There is a fee but you get cash within 48hrs of submitting your claim

The squeaky wheel gets the oil. We harass construction companies to pay their invoices daily, don't think it's industry standard they are taking advantage of you. you aren't their bank!

It sounds like maybe you should add a "penalty %" if a company does not pay you within 45 days!! Most billing companies send a bill and if it is not paid within 30 days, there is an added 2% charge for non-payment, every 30 days. This might entice some of the companies to pay quicker. Although since many tell you, "Well - we can not pay you until we get paid" then too many "middle men" are in the mix. Before accepting a job, I guess ask how long for reimbursement of services!! Most places around me are 30-90 days to pay you. I’m lucky enough to sub to a company that pays weekly. The only downside is they don’t pay as much as the other companies but to be paid weekly an have more work then I know what to do with given I’ll take it

I had my own business for over 20 years I have retired and turn the business over to my son. I was fortunate to have a father who owned his own business. And I adopted his business philosophy. I let my customers know at the beginning of our relationship, that I, like them needed to be paid for my service on a net 30 basis. I guaranteed them quality service, on a timely bases, at a competitive price. I always made every effort to fulfill and maintain my commitment to my customers, and I in turn expected them to do the same. When I retired and turn the business over to my son I had many of the same customers at retirement I had in the beginning, there was a few I did not have, and I believe my business was stronger, and its longevity speaks to my father’s business philosophy.

I’ve owned two business none of which are trucking but when I agree to do business with someone I always have a contract signed and in the contract I have contingency plans for late payments. Is that something you can do or is that not feasible in the construction dump truck world?

One of the reasons I didnt want to buy a dump truck. I drive a log truck here locally near you. Get paid on the 10th and 25th of every month and only takes 1 pay period before you start getting paid. Waiting 1 - 3 months is a killer. Damn near forget about the money before you get it I would feel like lol

You don't need a lawyer to file a small claims lawsuit. Here in my county you do have to pay $150 to have a company to prepare your paperwork for court. They won't let you go to court till you do. Then call the courthouse to setup a court date. They raised ours to $10,000 max to sue for. I'd just start with the ones that owe the most money. Or you can file a lien if you are a contractor.

90-120 days in SoCal. If the contractor wants me to hustle I tell them “I drive like you pay”

Are you allowed to gross more when you pull a trailer? You don’t ever see that setup around where I live.

If you are cash poor you can use a factoring company for expenses until you have enough reserves to weather the slow payments.

Most large corporations in the USA are now paying vendors at 90 day terms.. That's why cash is King. Hope you get paid soon.
