RANT - Rolling Stones Hackney Diamonds Tour Setlist

After only two shows, The Rolling Stones have dropped Out Of Time from their current Hackney Diamonds tour setlist. They also dropped Get Off Of My Cloud, a #1 classic that is only sporadically played live. In this video, I discuss and show you, the stagnant standardized setlist the Stones have used going back to 2005 (and in many ways 1997). The Stones created and cater to a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Exactly their catering to the black and brown audience cause they don't want to " offend anyone! Isay " fuck that" playit the way you wrote it, you don't see them changing the lyrics to rap songs degrading whites or killing cops. As a stones fan since early 90's, my pov is that their last true hit was Start me up. Then after 2 mediocre albums they came back in 89 with a solid Steel wheels, and a fantastic tour, which was a huge step up from their previous ones in terms of sound and performance. But at the same time it was when they became a "nostalgic band", and since then, even with some really good albums like voodoo and bridges, they just focused on their greatest hits until today.
@TheAlanRosenbergShow
@TheAlanRosenbergShow Месяц назад
thanks so much. I was at those shows and they were very much into the new albums. Steel Wheels and the corresponding tour were a new beginning. A new Stones format and it was amazing. The album was very well received as you said and they definitely were into the new songs, as were the fans. Same thing with Voodoo Lounge. The album was great for the road and the live performances were great and the new songs were highlights of the show. Bridges also featured many new songs - shit I saw them do Might As Well Get Juiced at Madison Square Garden and it was cool...... Bigger Bang was when it really changed in my mind. The had little regard to the new album, and yea I know they played Rough Justice at the Super Bowl. Anyway thanks so much.

In my opinion their best setlists were the 2002-2003 Licks tour. They play some songs every single show. I know they feel the need to appeal to those fans who want to hear Start Me Up and Honky Town Women. I feel fortunate that I have seem them play tunes like Lovin Cup, Moonlight Mile, Heart of Stone, etc. I agree with your sentiments. I too saw them the first time in 1975.

I saw the first night of the tour in Houston. They played for two hours. When I saw them in 2019 they played two hours as well, which is impressive, and also, showed me how many great songs they have over 60 years of being a band. They simply can't play them all. I liked them performing "Out of Time" but it's not one of my favorites, and, I think that they played it near the beginning of the first show, so they hadn't really hit their stride yet. I was glad that they brought back "Little T&A" It was clear from the beginning that they were really playing and not miming--at the very first note of the show, Keith hit the wrong chord for "Start Me Up." Of course the Stones have always been known for being a little loose and sloppy live, the essence of real rock n' roll. They played 3 songs from the latest album, but really got going when they played the section of anthems. "Gimme Shelter" is one of my favorite songs, not just of the Stones, but, of all time. It was true in 1969 and still true today. The female vocalist was great on this one. "Jumpin' Jack Flash" had a great feel and raw guitar sound. They totally skipped over "Sticky Fingers" and "Goat's Head Soup," two of my favorite albums. Also, neglected to play anything from the 80s, other than two from "Tattoo You." I think that there are some songs worth playing on "Steel Wheels" and "Dirty Work." Also nothing from the 90s-again, I think that "Voodoo Lounge" has some songs I wouldn't mind hearing live. I agree that they have locked themselves into a set list, and, with a stadium show, they kind of have to play for the casual classic rock fans, and, in a venue where most seats are bad, they have to play songs that translate well into a large venue. I am guessing that with frequent guitar changes, they are also limited in what they can play by the stage set and the equipment they have available. Overall, there are many deep cuts that I would love to hear, but I'm glad that I went, grateful that they are still out there, they met my expectation for a stadium show played by a band of guys in their 70s and 80s.

I totally agree with what you say. The connection you make between the casual fan and the Stones being artist is so true. To me, the Stones stopped thinking like artists when Mick Jagger stopped making solo albums. He was probably disappointed with the sales figures and then focused entirely on this version of the Stones. I really can't hear this talk about the casual fan anymore. I've been a Stones fan my whole life. I saw the band live for the first time in 1982 and have been on every tour since then. Like you, I buy every box set, every version of an album, no matter how many times it has been released, every book, every poster, simply everything. I imagine people like you and me have done a lot more for the status of the band than the people you describe in your rant. And yet we are basically punished by our heroes because the casual fan wants to hear satisfaction. I'm not naive either, the Stones are corporate rock and the company has to be served. It just slowly makes you tired and the band loses sympathy. A quick bit about the setlist: Richards only sings one song. Then why not the one from the new album? After more than 30 years he writes a real gem and then they don't play it? I don't get it. Alan, best rant ever. Keep on doing the good stuff.

I seen them play the Rose Bowl in Pasadena a few years ago and it was so predictable, I actually left before the encore. Ouch...but I get your drift. As a lifetime Stones loyalist, I'm beginning to think that I may not bother attending future shows--given the cost, and hassle and headache of getting in and out of these massive stadiums, and general let down of the shows, mainly as much from a 'content' perspective, rather than just set lists--I don't know if I'll bother going to another show after the upcoming Soldier Field show in late June. I mean, if you're going to focus on the big hits and 'standards' as I like to call them, then maybe just play more of them, if you know what I mean. Again, that would mean a 2:30 show, minimum--and I don't think they can physically do it. Keith looks whipped.

BRAVO! I give your rant five out of five stars. Starting with the most important positive aspects of The Rolling Stones, I’m with you on the band’s phenomenal longevity and its ALWAYS LIVE concert performances. The Stones have never faked it. Unlike all the phony frontmen (whose club was most recently joined by none other than Don Henley), lip synching is out of the question when it comes to Mighty Mick - even at the age of 80. Whenever Mick and the rest of The Stones perform on stage, the vocals and the music are unadulterated. And like you, Alan, and every other true Stones fan I’ve ever met, the pure rawness of the band, including flubs rather than tapes, is what I want. The satisfaction from the realness is what counts the most. In keeping it real, we, as devoted fans, must acknowledge the truth about how The Stones have been playing it safe with setlists for, as you meticulously detailed, 19 years. If ever the band should push a new album (as was the case with “Voodoo Lounge,” “Steel Wheels,” “Tattoo You” and “Some Girls”), “Hackney Diamonds” shines with the kind of excellence that deserves to be pushed. I’ve never understood why the original bad boys of rock ‘n’ roll have ever had to play it so painfully safe with their setlists. To me, the ratio of warhorses to deep cuts and new songs is a blemish on the touring legacy of The Rolling Stones. A good mix of songs is what keeps concerts fresh and interesting for both performers and audience members. Of course, SOME signature songs have to be played at every concert. (Even I, having seen every tour since 1975, want to hear some of the classics.) And I do appreciate Mick’s feelings about always playing “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” because he does not want to disappoint anyone by excluding the game-changing song that is synonymous with The Rolling Stones. I’m glad that he cares. In that regard and to be fair to The Stones, the three Led Zeppelin concerts that I’ve seen have always included “Stairway to Heaven” and the Yes concerts that I’ve seen have always included “Roundabout.” However, one of the Zeppelin shows that I saw was to promote “Physical Graffiti.” And the majority of the songs that the band played were from that new album. Likewise, one of the Yes shows that I saw was to promote “Tales from Topographic Oceans.” And Yes was so bold as to play the entire double album, which, as you know, is very far from sounding commercial. After the album was performed, the band played just a few other songs and ended the concert with “Roundabout.” It was spectacular; my first and one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. Leaving the arena, audience members were buzzing about how great the concert was. I didn’t hear anyone, or later read any review, lamenting the omission of a bunch of classic Yes songs. I guess that maybe we can chalk up those two band examples to the zeitgeist of the early/mid 1970s. But, then again, we can see the holes in that theory when we think about concerts in recent decades by the likes of Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Phish and others. They never play it safe and, still, they sell out tour after tour after tour. Attendance has never waned because fans were unhappy that certain songs did not make setlists. The fans come back for more, regardless. I believe the same would be true for Stones fans. Owing to The Stones’ amazing and huge discography and Mick’s 13:53 mesmerizing command of the stage, I really think that Stones fans would come back for subsequent tours, even if some warhorses are missing. And, if, as you suggested, The Stones trade stadiums for arenas, the amount of rabid fans will outnumber the casual fans, who typically flock to stadium shows. Then, Mick doesn’t have to swap out a song like “Out of Time” because not enough audience members know the words. And thus, he won’t have to be concerned about getting a loud enough response to stroke his ego as much as he would like it to be stroked (IMHO).
@TheAlanRosenbergShow

Thanks as always for your passionate and knowledgable comments. Great to hear from someone who experienced those golden years of the 70's and later who saw classic bands (like The Stones too) playing new material, sometimes new albums in their entirety, and the fans loving it. What a time. But as you said, there are still huge legacy artists still doing that - like U2, Springsteen, Phish and many more. My gut is that the may be the end of the Stones as a road band - and they want one more finale around the stadiums and playing the warhorses, Going out on their legacy, but who knows.

The setlist is difficult with a 60-year history, but I agree. My biggest complaint is the lack on songs from the latest album. The last two - B&L and Diamonds are both about 48 minutes… Not sure why B&L became a double album… In a 120- minute set, they could easily play the majority of a new album, deep cuts and some warhorses. Or, at least half of a new album. Even the Rolling Stone concert-review hoped for more from Diamonds. I find it hard to believe that people who are paying up to thousands of dollars to see a Stones show aren’t also picking up the latest album. Even if they’re not, passionate performances - y’know, ROCK ‘N’ ROLL! - will draw listeners in. We’re all here DECADES LATER because real rock and roll touched/es us DEEPLY. Thanks for your rant. It was needed. Now that Charlie is gone and they’re in their ‘80s, it’s clear that this can’t go on for much longer. Sidenote. They need to consider dropping some songs now that Charlie is gone. Jordan is fine on the Rocks Off, SFM type material, but… I want to be careful not to be cellphone-performance critic, but some (many) of those songs only Charlie can play. Side. Sidenote. Kenny Jones said this in Uncut. Keith said to him a couple of years ago at Charlies’ memorial at Ronnie Scotts, “Kenney, it’s only you and Charlie. You know that, don’t you?”

And of course Zak Starkey is the perfect Who drummer now...but I digress. I'm with you - The Stones should be playing much more of Hackney Diamonds, but they did the same thing with A Bigger Bang. No faith in playing the new songs to a crowd of casual fans who don't know or wanna know the new material. But hey David Gilmour is touring soon and you can bet he will play his whole new album, he always does. Now that's an artist with confidence in his new material and his fans.

Hope you don't mind a random, non-Stones related question, but since you've been such a big concert goer for decades, have you personally noticed a difference in the amount of talking that goes on at show? I'm a few years younger than you, and I don't attend nearly as many concerts as I used to, but when I do, there is an endless chatter that goes on regardless of who or what is on-stage. For just one example--I went to an Elvis Costello with my daughter a few years back, and I was quite excited, because I'm a big fan and I'd never seen him in concert before, but it's AMAZING how much I learned about the cell phone plan of some guy in front of me. And it wasn't some young kid. So many of these people now seem to go out of their way to get as close to the stage as possible, only to spend their time doing just about ANYTHING but watch the show. I suspect some of them just want to document yet another "experience" by clicking a few selfies and posting them on Instagram or whatever. After that, the show becomes irrelevant. Thanks in advance. New sub, btw. Just found your channel a few days ago.

I tend to enjoy bands I love that play small venue where the audience is made up of big fans who love and know the music. So at those not so much talking and bands often play deeper cuts. But definitely the larger shows like the upcoming Stones are largely moderate fans who don’t know much beyond the few hits, take their photos, talk, do their beer runs, bathroom breaks. Yes s different worlds from concerts in 70s and 80s. Plus I can’t afford more than one or two big shows s year. And that’s sad. But that’s another issue.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow man I’m telling you, it was so much better than I thought it would be without cell phones. I guess if we have gone so far with Bob Dylan we seem to have full circle back to the beginning and everything about no cell phones turned out perfect. No one constantly blocking your view with their phone. No excessive talking because 2 neighbors are comparing cell phone recordings. Bob maintained just the right delivery of songs. You might not believe this but I have been to a Rolling Stones show in the last 5 years where no cell phones was strictly enforced. It was beautiful! When the Stones started the zip code tour they did a surprise show at the Fonda theatre in Hollywood where they played for the first time ever the entire album Sticky Fingers. Picture this: I’m standing in front about maybe 15 feet from Keith Richard’s who is seated and playing a 12 string acoustic guitar on ‘You Gotta Move’. I never would have dreamed about that. No cell phones waving in front of other people’s sight line. We were a tiny audience, the tickets were only ten dollars. They recorded the entire evening. Some years later they finally released it on blu-ray and I was about the first fan they showed entering the venue. I was in it several more times so people can verify what I am declaring. After 2 big shows with the 2 biggest best music acts Dylan and the Stones, I’m confident the show would be better off without cell phones.

Worse ever tour setlist was in 1978 - when they played 8 songs from their new album in a row, and dropped classics like 'Gimme Shelter', 'Midnight Rambler', 'Street Fighting Man' and 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', as well as every Brian-era hit. Imagine the stick they'd get if they did something similar with the new album/tour?

The 1978 tour was unique - it was their punk move - play virtually the whole new album - short 90 minute set. They knew that had an incredible album. They took a lot of stick on that tour - I have the clippings. It was very gutsy for the Stones and I thought it was very cool. The other tours also highlighted the new albums as well (but not to that extent). That was not unusual in those days. Bands often played their whole new album - even when it first came out and the audience didn't know it yet. Check out Floyd - they played complete albums, even before released. Yes played the complete 90 minute Tales From Topographic Oceans and no one knew a song. Rock music and the audiences were much different then and much better. We craved new music, not the same songs over and over again. When I saw Voodoo Lounge tour I couldn't wait to hear the new songs and they were awesome.

Great review Alan. This is a problem for many of these mega bands that have had a 50 plus year history. They have to essentially satisfy three camps. 1) The first camp is for the casual fan who only wants to hear the mega songs they hear all the time. These fans might be first timers attending a concert. 2) The second camp would be the die hard fan who would prefer to hear nothing but "deep cuts". 3) The third camp which would be playing songs off of their latest release to familiarize the fans in order to buy the disc.

True, but semi true - there are huge, big legacy artists who do break out of this mold. Shit, some even play their entire new albums...and damn their fans love it. The Stones never went that way - well at least for the last 20 years. But this Hackney Diamonds tour should have been an arena tour playing the new album, deeper cuts - either a new beginning or a classy way out...for the music.

You may be unaware of how the touring business works. A promoter offers the band a guaranteed fee per show. The promoter then sells the tickets. I think the setlist is part of the deal. Unfortunately, the only solution is this: Get a thousand fans, agree on a setlist and pay tens of thousands of dollars for a ticket. The Stones are in my DNA, too. Keef can play the lullaby version of JJF, and I'll be happy to hear it. A lot of fans would like to trade problems with you. You've seen the band dozens of times. What memories and stories you could tell. (I've got a few) I'm taking my friend to see the show in Cleveland. It's going to be her first Stones concert. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing it through her eyes and ears. I'm ecstatic for her. She gets to experience what you and I have had the privilege to see and hear dozens of times. Be happy for that young kid beside you who hears SMU or JJF for the first time and has started their Stones journey.

So we can experience, hopefully, the joy and excitement of being at a Stones concert. And yes for newbies, like them - great setlist. But my heart, and yours, doesn't lie. They have a great new album and if this is a new beginning (which I thought it might be, but now I'm convinced this is the end), they should have went the arena route and played more of the album and deeper tracks - a better beginning. BUT now that I think this will be the end - makes more sense. I see no way they continue after this as an active band.

I’m 54 and have seen them 20x since 1989. I fully understand WHY they maintain the war horses. I also get why they’re not too adventurous with Keith’s limited contributions over the past couple tours. My main complaints: 1) why not have Mick Taylor on your tour to help Keith and add to the sound? 2) Mick thinking the crowd must be on their feet and clapping in order to enjoy the song. He wants people doing sing-a-longs. Hey Mick, the crowd is OLD TOO and may enjoy the songs without dancing or singing! Don’t base your song choices expecting crowds of 60 and 70 year olds to act like 30 year olds.

My favorite shows now are just sitting back in a great venue, with a great sound system, and absorbing great music played by real musicians with real singers. We are old. Read in advance of the Arizona show that Out of Mind was dropped in a transcript of a phone interview with an Arizona newspaper due to lack of audience response compared to the European audience. Quite a disappointment The Stones have a second tier of songs that would make for tremendous show. The opportunity has unfortunately been missed to give the mass audience a chance to get familiar with them. Out of Time being dropped is a missed opportunity. I do think that they could put in 10 so non war horse songs like Dance Part I, Luxury, Heartbreaker, She's a Rainbow, Jigsaw Puzzle, Salt of the Earth, All Down the LIne, Undercover of the Night, Too Much Blood, All the Way Down, One Hit to the Body, Slipping Away, Rough justice, Love is Strong, Amanda Jones, 2000 Light Years from Hone, Loving Cup, 2000 Man, 100 Years Ago, Slipping Away, Memory Motel , Hand of Fate, I'm Free, Amanda Jones (many others) along with 5 cuts from Hackney Diamonds and still be able to play stadiums. The way I see it, every single show The Rolling Stones play will be the first ever and probably only Stones concert for hundreds of fans in the audience. So if they wanna play the same war horse songs to satisfy those fans that will never get another chance to see them, then to me there’s nothing wrong with that. I would also obviously love to see some deep cuts, but honestly I’d rather hear “It’s Only Rock and Roll” than anything from the new album. I’m a younger fan tho, this is the first time they’ve released an original album in my lifetime (except for a Bigger Bang but I was too young to remember it) so that’s just my perspective from a young fan who has never seen them live.

Think your missing something. They are doing 19 dates. By the time the tour is over they will probably play 35 different songs. In 2019 when they played in Chicago they played8 different songs from nite 1 to nite 2. It's not just the Stones but a whole ensemble of musicians including a drummer that hasn't played a lot of shows with the Stones. I agree that they have enough hits to alternate to different ones but to put on a ready show they need the war horses.
@TheAlanRosenbergShow
@TheAlanRosenbergShow Месяц назад
Thanks Norman. No I'm not missing that. I know in the 70's they rarely changed songs and had a static setlist for a tour. But the difference is that the songs they played from tour to tour were very different (of course there were always some "warhorses" even then). So the fan who would go to one show, or two, would see a very different set of songs. Now it's pretty much the same songs from tour to tour, with a song or two within the set changing. Doesn't help much for the fan who can only go to one or two shows. So most fans have seen largely the same songs for 20 years - you get the idea. No real surprise why so many fans, and BIG fans no longer go. Sick of the same songs, minus the one or two audibles.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow I'm with you, Alan. The Stones were the greatest rock band of all time. Like you, I'm a huge fan. I have all the music, the bootlegs, the books, the merch, etc. So, I'm with you. Its no question that the Stones live show format has been essentially the same since 2002. And that's cool. My last tour was A Bigger Bang. It was awesome, but even then, it was really just the Licks tour with three new songs. (And the Licks tour was really just the Bridges to Babylon tour without three new songs). I realized after Bigger Bang that they'd finally entered their Elvis/Vegas era and there was no turning back. (By the way, I'm not putting them down by saying that. Just sketching a timeframe around my comment). At some point, even for a band as archetypal - even slightly dangerous, at one time - as the Stones, it was inevitable. The weight of previous accomplishments simply becomes too heavy to bear. That is simply not sustainable. And how could it be? Their history as a band is groundbreaking on so many levels. Personally, I'd love to hear them play entire shows consisting solely of blues and r'n'b covers, or only songs that were recorded before 1968, or 1976, or... well, you pick the year. And as much as I'd love that, or simply even a more balanced setlist, it's not going to happen. It is sad, but not so much because they're not trying, but more because now, every tour just might literally be their last - and the chance of the band putting on a show with a setlist that you, me and similar die-hard/long-term fans would beg for, gets smaller and smaller. At this point, and after 20 years since the Licks tour, it's just not going to happen. So, yeah, I'm with you. It's sad. But not out of my disappointment in their song choices, but more that I keep wishing for something that I know just isn't going to happen - yet keep wishing, anyway. So now, like you said, it is like the Beach Boys - it's just Fun, Fun, Fun (and run it all the way to the bank). My apologies that I suggested you were whining. You weren't. Actually, don't agree with this one. The Stones never changed their setlists historically within a tour. But the tours were very different. Steel Wheels was historic. Not only the staging but the setlist was completely different from what come before. And you had the "bigger" band, a much tighter band. I saw three shows at Shea Stadium on that tour, and I'll never forget it. That tour returned songs they never played or hadn't played in decades - like Paint It Black. And they played songs from the new album as well. Some Girls, Tattoo You, Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge, Bridges, No Security - very different tours. Now the shows within the tours didn't change much, but that's always been the case with the Stones.

Bravo, Alan! They’ve been stuck in this rut for way too long…and why bother making a new album, and a pretty darn good one, if you’re just going to ignore it? I think many songs from Hackney would make great concert material, particularly in the stadium setting…and I understand playing their “standards” comes with the territory, but with their advancing age, can they even manage a 2 1/2 hour set?? Because that’s what they’d have to do, minimum, if they’re going to dig into deep cuts, play the new album, and the standards. And the Stones NEVER played long shows, even in their prime. I think the Tattoo You shows ran 2:20 with encores, and clubbing goofy fans with guitar during balloon drop down; Knebworth, longly thought of as their longest show, was just barely over 2:30; I think Voodoo Lounge and No Security shows went 2:15, maybe. So they clearly don’t want to play marathon shows..I remember Mick commenting in the mid 80s that two hours is “enough of anybody”. And would it really be so impossible for them to do a three hour show, like Springsteen? Those left in the E Street band are a bunch of old farts too, so how do they manage? And none of them strike me as Olympians. I mean, that old vegan Macca does nearly three hour shows, digging deep into the Beatles catalog, as well as his own…however, he has a much younger band than him doing the heavy lifting-that being said, his current band has been with him for over 20 years, so those jokers gotta be in their 50s by now; I really think with the Stones it’s simply a matter of will. I have always maintained that they still have the musical chops to do the kind of shows fans like us have been craving (though these recent shows may be proving the contrary). But I don’t know what to think other than they just don’t have the desire anymore. They clearly don’t feel the need to play the new album, nor do they play anything from the five albums that preceded it, or the several great singles that have been dribbled onto the landscape. And as for catering to the broader audience that is forced to pay hefty prices to be there, and don’t want to hear an evening of chestnuts, are we sure that this audience, as it’s presently constituted wouldn’t enjoy, be impressed or even amazed at their effort??? Or maybe even inspired to buy or download the new album, and other albums in the catalog that they may have overlooked? I mean, Macca’s audience seems to value that-do Mick and Keith believe their audience has no interest in any song that isn’t on Hot Rocks or 40 Licks??? I think they would be surprised at the response they’d get. I don’t have a problem with them doing She’s So Cold instead of Out of Time…I have a problem with them not doing She’s So Cold AND Out of Time.
@TheAlanRosenbergShow
@TheAlanRosenbergShow Месяц назад
Fantastic summary. I clearly agree on every point. How did I forget to mention Macca. 3 hour shows with lots of deep cuts and new cuts. Your correct that the Stones are largely 2:15 Hour band. Doesn’t matter. Have some faith. Or simply be an artist and play the new album and or deep cuts. Your right. Shit were begging for songs that were famous. They’re not even deep. It’s insane. Hell I remember the 78 tour. Played 90 minutes and almost the whole new album. But this is ridiculous.
@anthonyaswe4174

Interesting points regarding the other artists and their set lists…I probably mentioned this before, but the last time I saw Dylan, in 2021, he played 8 of the 10 songs on his latest Rough and Rowdy Ways-and NONE of his pop hits. In fact, the only oldies he did were Watching the River Flow, Serve Somebody, I’ll Be your Baby Tonight-none of which sounded remotely like the original releases btw. I mean, he even did a couple of songs from those crappy Sinatra albums he’s been in love with doing. He long stopped playing guitar, and even keyboard on stage, and sings in a dry, frazzled wisp of a voice. And his set was 2 hours, on the dot. And the venue was the quaint Riverside Theater in Milwaukee. I’m not saying I want the Stones to do that, but they could be much more dynamic in their selection. And maybe they’d better serve their fan base with theater or arena shows. I also went back and checked their set list from 1975: they generally did 23 tunes, or rather 21, since Billy Preston did two songs. But back then, they really stretched out Can’t Always Get, Midnight Rambler and Sympathy more so than the last 20 years-but the show still ran better than 2 hours, maybe 2:15? And by the time the got to the European tour, they began playing at least a handful of tunes from Black and Blue-still staying in that 23 song range. I truly think Mick has always had this notion that nobody is all that entertaining for more than 2 hours. And remember on Bigger Bang tour, when they started playing “Sway” in their sets? An amazing, powerful song-that seemed hollow even then-it just didn’t have that massive, swirling bottom end, that heaved the song forward-it just sounded rigid to me…maybe others heard it differently. If so, please share!

@TheAlanRosenbergShow
@TheAlanRosenbergShow Месяц назад
That is the mystery. I knew from the get go when they announced they were playing stadiums, they would go back to their typical stadium set list of the previous 20 years. I predicted they would play 3 maybe four new songs - and rotate another one or two. I did a video on it. You don't have to be a genius to predict it. It's their 20 year history. I also predicted slow sales and a huge amount of big fans will skip it, or maybe grab tickets near showtime when they give them away - all happening. So why on earth do they do this. They're old, can only play a relative small amount of shows. Touring is expensive, well when your The Stones, with private planes, huge entourages, first class everything etc. So they have to play stadiums, therefore the same sets because the audience is comprised of mostly casual fans who only know a few hits. The self-fulfilling prophecy completed. NOW IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY. They can play arenas with a basic stage supplied by the arenas, travel lightly, and play those places with songs as you suggest. Dylan and others do that. There you go my friend. Which is why, contrary to some other's opinions, us BIG Stones fans have a right, and an almost obligation to call them out on this. Yes I'm still going....why ....because this is the end.

I'd have loved Rocks Off over IORR, and since ive never heard Out of Time live, I wish that was in there. I also dont need Shattered and Miss You again... But Ive seen the 23 times in 43 years. i know i'm not the typical audience member and that they have to play their greatest hits lest they be seen as a disappointment. It'd be cool if when they played 2 shows in a city, they advertise one as a 'deep cut" show to "warn" ticket buyers (while they didn't formally do that, we did get such a situation back in '03 at the Roseland Ballroom and it was great!!). I wouldn't expect Memo from Turner, Whose Flying Your Plane or 2000 Man (though i'd love that trio), but maybe we could get Dance Little Sister or Have you Seen Your Mother... Anyway, for their age, what they are doing is incredible, and they varied their set list by 5 songs at the 2 NJ shows, which is pretty good compared to some bands that play the same set list every night on tour, all in all, still a great show. The problem with us crazy super fans is that we're always gonna some away from a show with the odd juxtaposition of feeling blown away and disappointed at the same time! But worse than that, especially in their first show of this tour, somebody is turning Keith's volume up & down drastically off stage as he's playing. Because I've lost track of how many times i'm watching both ronnie& keith, Ronnie is playing, but keith is doing that 'hunting' thing he does now where his fret hand ghosts up&down the neck because he's unsure of the chord changes so he's essentially just silently miming. Yet i'm hearing totally incongruent additional guitar sounds.

@@reluctantblumpkin There have been rumors on past tours that "behind the scenes" there has been some additional guitar work. When the had Blondie Chaplin, he would chip in. Also possibly guitar techs behind or below stage. But none of this is confirmed. From what I hear, it's certainly mostly if not all Ronnie and Keith, because, frankly the guitar work is not so good, so if they had additional guitars behind the scene, I think it would sound much better than it does. But who knows. It's not unusual - in fact its very common, that bands have additional players behind the scenes. I've seen it tons of times - for me, as long as it's real, live musicians and not tapes.

Absolutely incredible classic song - a definitive Rolling Stones song - perhaps the ultimate - who else could come up with that. With that said, I'm fine with it not in the set now. It's very long and since they're playing a bit less than 2 hours, I'd rather have other songs. Rambler has been in the set forever. Plus I miss Mick doing the belt / stage bit when he was younger.

Yup ... super frustrating when the set list is so inflexible and does not reflect all eras, deeper cuts, hits that resonate in specific markets, etc ... love the Stones and, boy, the set list could be stellar ... but won't be ... ....separately, I'm facing the same thing with forthcoming Yes gig in Glasgow in 2 weeks ... thought I'd go and see a re-energised Yes doing tracks from the (pretty good) latest album, Mirror in the Sky, and see what Billy Sherwood and Jay Schellen bring to the band ... but the set list has absolutely nothing recent ... zero ... and Geoff Downes' keyboard work for classic Yes can be wonderfully "underwhelming".... and, to make it worse (my view ... others may differ) there's an extended medley of Tales From Topographic Oceans ... .... as we say in Scotland "Gonna No!" .... I hope to be pleasantly surprised on the night .... we'll see ... ... going (again) to see Wishbone Ash (Andy Powell & co) at Lemon Tree in Aberdeen later this year and you can be sure that the set list gets mixed up from tour to tour ... always a great night Thanks again for video CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland

Thanks so much my friend. Wishbone Ash, as you well know, are always really good. I see them every opportunity. I'm a huge prog fan and I put classic Yes at the top for me with Genesis my all time favorite - from Nursery Cryme thru Duke. I tried Yes without Jon Anderson, but ....call me a snob, I just couldn't get into it. (well except Drama - that's in a class by itself). I certainly have no interest in seeing them now. Of course, some might say that's hypocritical with still buying and seeing Wishbone Ash....But Andy always carried it on so a bit more validity to my brain...lol. Let me know how the shows are. Love that saying "Gonna No!". That's great. Spot on for a Tales medley....

Yes (post Jon Anderson) ... Yes, post Jon Anderson, has definitely been a bit challenging to tune into ... however, I do, genuinely, like (and really do play a lot) both Fly From Here and the remix Return Trip ... the album has several tunes left over from Drama era and this makes for a really excellent listen ... the Live in Lyon Release is excellent .... ditto the handfull of From A Page era tracks ... that band with Benoit David and Oliver Waleman really did "work" ... the Jon Davison era has not been wonderful but there were signs of life on The Quest ... and, as stated previously, the recent album is actually pretty decent with some nifty fretwork from Steve Hiwe and some oomph from Jay and Billy ... pity the band aren't playing any tracks live. Do check out either of the Fly From Here (Benoit David) or the remix Return Trip (Trevor Horn on vocals ... same songs but with Benoit David's vocals replaced by Trevor Horn's) ... quite Drama-esque ... I do think you'd enjoy it ...

Update re YES gig in Glasgow on Friday 24th May 2024 .... No changes to established set list for tour ... chatted to the guys manning the Roger Dean exhibit accompanying the tour who stated that the band was playing great .... firing on all cylinders .... and, yes, band was super tight, punchy and quite ballsy .... Steve Howe's guitar work all night was just great .... super energetic and precise ... "giving it laldy!" (Scottish phrase .... just going for it) .... Jon Davison's vocals were good ... on point, no issues at all ... worked well ... enjoyed Billy Sherwood's bass work and Chris Squire-isms .... Jay Schellen did not miss a beat .... great energy.... and Geoff Downes did his keyboard thing his way (still not a huge fan of his .... but nothing "bugged" me) ... highlights were Going For The One, Don't Kill the Whale, South Side of the Sky .... the Topographic 20 minute set was actually really good ... they could sub in something else v "It'll Be a Good Day" ... StevevHowe donned a strat the sole track from the recent album (Cut From The Stars).... Roundabout was played with gusto but, for me, is just too long ... final encore (Starship Trooper) was STELLAR ... best I've seen ... awesome .... Steve Howe was majestic ..... so, overall, yup .. that worked .... I'd go see again ... especially if Steve Howe continues to play like this and set list keeps evolving ... so, hey, there's still life in Yes and, for me, it was definitely worth the 300 mile round trip by bus ... give them a chance if they come round. @@calummcgregor3662 Thanks for that amazing review. I've been so biased - with Steve Howe being the only "original" member left (and of course, he's not really original member - but to me he is because that's when Yes really took off) -I just haven't given Yes a look really since Anderson was canned. I bought Heaven and Earth and dumped it. To me, they really became a tribute band. But in today's world, that's the accepted thing - the bands just keep going - some with no original members and no one cares. I mean it's great that they try to keep this great music alive and do a great job with it. And they do release new music. And clearly Davison does a fine job. I'll have to keep a more open mind I guess. Thanks for the update and possibly steering me to a more open mind regarding Yes, one of my all time favorite bands - at least from 1972 - 1977. Best, Alan

The Stones aren’t the only band that doesn’t change their set list. I follow McCartney and it is the same. Even down to the stories and jokes. When performers of this magnitude and with an extensive catalog don’t change it up I personally think they are lazy. Problem is you still want to see them because you love them and it could very well be the last time.

Don't mistake not changing the setlist within a tour. The Stones have never done that - check out 1969, 1972 or any tour. I've NO problem with that (though it would be more interesting if they didn't (but that's Grateful Dead / Springsteen territory). It's the tour setlists. McCartney totally changes his setlists from different tours - and by the way plays 3 hours and does new album tracks and deep cuts and classics....oh and he's older than The Stones, for what its worth.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow True Alan, buuutttt....I saw Paul at Wrigley Field in 2011; I have a friend who saw him at Lambeau Field in 2019. And hearing him detail it, it sounds like we saw the same show, albeit a 2:45 show, unlike the snapshot we get from the Stones. The anecdotes and stories and asides were the same--and yes, to be fair, I'm sure there was some difference in the set list, as Paul likes to pull out Beatles tunes he hasn't done before...either way, your point of him changing and expanding the set list is well taken. 19 years of the same stadium shows / setlists is more than enough. I've seen it, been there and done that, over and over. They put out a great new album. Of course I'm happy they're still out there, but it sure is frustrating what they could play. There are plenty of major artists (who play stadiums by the way) and play their whole new album and then return to do a set of hits. The Stones clearly have little confidence in playing deeper tracks or too much of their new album, because they know the majority of the people paying to see them, don't want to hear that or don't know it, and didn't buy the new album......and that's. SAD!!! This was The Rolling Stones, the greatest rock band of all time. NOT the damn Beach Boys. But that's alright - go crazy at Satisfaction and the rest of the warhorses they've played continually for the last 20 years. I personally never need to hear Satisfaction again - and yes that's because I am one of their biggest fans.
