Before all else Leonard was a poet, whether or not it was just his written word or his words set to music, he could reach deep into your soul. R.I.P. dear Leonard.

One of his songs that always hits me hard is “if it be your will”. It’s my understanding that he wrote it when he had been diagnosed with throat cancer and feared he might not be able to sing again. It’s a very powerful song.

Did Leonard Cohen have the best voice? No, absolutely not. But he was a poetic and lyrical genius.

This was his first album. He was several decades younger. That's why his voice is different.

Leonard Cohen's first album is genius from beginning to end If it at some point you don't tear up you may not have a soul.

This was the song that made me love Leonard Cohen. I was 17. Now I'm 62 and saw him three times live. So glad you love this too!

Thank you so much for covering another Cohen tune. It’s great to see how you feel the music and give his words such attention. On his final album, released after his death, there is a similar, but more sensual track, with phenomenal instrumentation: The Night of Santiago. Worth noting he read the lyrics into a microphone shortly before passing, and the music was added later.

Also, not sure if you would ever react to a speech, but Cohen is brilliant here, and you can learn a lot about his character and music: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VIR5ps8usuo.html

There is something comforting and gentle about Leonard Cohen's voice, like your father or grandfather is singing to you. I have been listening to him for so long that I have grown to love that voice. His ability to use words, his poetic sense is what grabs me and has made me a fan for over 50 years. I love his music. Judy Collins did a really beautiful cover of this song about 45 years ago. You will love her voice, so pretty and with a great range as well. Listen on your own time if you don't want to react here. Judy Collins was the person who introduced most of us to Joni MItchell by doing so many of her songs, well before Joni was actually selling records. Judy Collins always looked for great writers of songs to sing on her albums. Steven Stills (Crosby, Stills and Nash, etc.) was in love with Judy Collins and wrote a great song called Sweet Judy Blue Eyes about her. The music world was so interconnected back in those days. Leonard Cohen always had the best backup vocalists and backing band. Everyone would have loved to have played with him. Leonard Cohen had a plutonic relationship with a woman named Suzanne who is the subject of this song. I think Leonard Cohen was writing before Bob Dylan but both are such outstanding poets that I certainly understand how you would match them up.

Cohen's voice got deeper as he got older. This is one of his first songs. Wonderful to see singer/songwriter recognize the quality of his lyrics.

I loved your reaction! The song really is almost too beautiful to describe. Cohen was something else both as a writer and a musician. It's impossible to rank his works, but this is certainly up there.

I lost my virginity listening to this album all night, over and over again. I was 17 years old, back in the 70s. Her name was Pilar, I will never forget her. Every time I hear this song I cry with nostalgia for those crazy years.

About an affair Leonard had, I believe. She lived on a boat in the harbor. It makes me think of my days of living on a boat in the harbor, in Honolulu.
