For context, this song is about a soldier that died in ww2. He had a toxic relationship with his mother and she hated him even more when she found out that he was being drafted. In the bridge of the song, u hear him screaming “mama, mama, mama” as he dies on the battlefield, wishing to see his mother. Wishing that he had a better relationship w/ her.

But it makes more sense to think that “mama” is literally the narrator’s mother. By “making them famous” he could mean keeping his memory alive and praising him for dying for his country. Which is why he says “you made us ‘oh so’ famous”. it’s supposed to come off as sarcastic
