"The Great Gig in the Sky" is a track from Pink Floyd's eighth studio album, "The Dark Side of the Moon," released in 1973. The song is primarily an instrumental piece with vocalizations and a prominent piano solo. It features Clare Torry's powerful and emotive vocal performance, which consists of wordless, improvised singing.
The track serves as a pivotal moment in the concept album, contributing to the overall theme of mortality, existentialism, and the human experience. The lyrics of the album explore various aspects of life, including time, money, mental illness, and death.
"The Great Gig in the Sky" is known for its haunting and emotional impact, with Torry's vocals conveying a range of intense emotions. The song is often regarded as one of the standout tracks on "The Dark Side of the Moon" and is considered a classic in the progressive rock genre.
"Pulse" is a live album by Pink Floyd, released in 1995. The album features recordings from the band's 1994 Division Bell tour and includes performances from various concerts. The tour was in support of their fourteenth studio album, "The Division Bell."
One of the most notable aspects of the "Pulse" release is the inclusion of a live version of "The Dark Side of the Moon" in its entirety. The album also features other classic Pink Floyd tracks, showcasing the band's skill in live performances.
The "Pulse" concert was accompanied by a visually stunning light show and elaborate stage setup, including the iconic circular screen known as the "Pink Floyd prism." The band's lineup during the Division Bell tour consisted of David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, along with supporting musicians.
In addition to the audio release, there was a video release of "Pulse" that included footage from the concerts. The video featured visual effects and animations synchronized with the music, providing a memorable audio-visual experience for Pink Floyd fans.
Overall, "Pulse" is highly regarded by Pink Floyd enthusiasts and is considered a significant part of the band's discography, capturing the essence of their live performances during the Division Bell tour.

Rick Wright, Pink Floyd keyboardist, asked Durga Mcbroom, a background singer for Pink Floyd World Tour, to sing this song at his funeral. She did that too, as she confirmed to me personally. But there is still the unconfirmed rumor that she was accompanied on the piano by John Lord

Another spectacular reaction!! 40+ years after first hearing this song, the emotions never change. No other song, (outside of gospel music), moves me the way this song does. Can't explain it. Have stopped trying to understand it. I just know it's real. For me, it's the most spiritual song in rock and roll history.

Everything you say makes perfect sense. Pink Floyd has the ability to play with the subconscious and feelings. At the beginning it is said that you shouldn't be afraid of dying. And that is exactly what is described by the voices. There is something about dying. Phase 1: Not wanting to believe.Phase 2: Anger.Phase 3: Negotiation.Phase 4: Depression.Phase 5: Acceptance. And that's exactly what you find in this song
@user-vw8ob3bl7b
@user-vw8ob3bl7b 5 месяцев назад
Exactly and, whether you listen to the live or studio version, those emotions are demonstrated purely by the sound of the singer's voice(s). It's difficult to listen to this and not be as emotional. Pink Floyd is beyond so many other groups. There really hasn't and probably won't be another group like them. They're music geniuses.

Was told about the five stages of dying and was listening to the great gig all in same month back in 1972(?) When a deep friend passed and he (we) know it was going to happen ( not medical) Very deep to grow up with this reality.

Thanks for that. I didn’t think it was Claire because she only did the album as far as I knew. Sam is doing pretty well here, but I don’t think anyone could match what Claire did on that take, not even her. What Claire did was original and spontaneous and insanely gifted. She just went somewhere that she had never been before and blew the doors off it. I truly believe it was a one time thing for her.

My butt was center stage 7th row back. Love both the studio and live versions. To be there to see this....the energy .....the absolute connection to "all that is".......floyd should always be live. Pink Floyd channels the universes energy and they tranduce the energy into music and then it direclty touches your soul. Welcome to the power of music at it's finest.

Great reaction to a beautiful song… I saw this concert or tour in 1994… I will never forget it… I Spent $70 for 2 tickets at that time in Chicago. I also want this song played at my funeral… the song is about the final stages of passing… of course you need to listen to the whole Dark Side Of The Moon album to understand… but the first part you were right is anger and fighting death… 2nd part is transitioning and being stuck between heaven and earth and not wanting to leave as the soul is conflicted… and part 3 is the final exception of letting go and the soul stops fighting and rest’s for the last time. I have seen Pink Floyd 3 times in my life time including the WALL concert my favorite band of all time.

Great reaction 👏. This is how without words the song can portray the three stages of dying. 1. Fear 2. Acceptance 3. Peace/ release These three world class singers paid homage to the original studio version (Claire Torry)the respect it deserves.

It's one of the finest PCs. of music made in my lifetime. It is a song about the three stages of dealing with death. Each woman deals with the emotions. 1st singers emotion was anger . 2nd singer it was sadness. And the last singer's emotion was acceptance. All three women singing used one vowel as the word the vowel O . It is an amazing song with way more depth than most people realize.

Yes, Clare Torrey sang the original on the album, She was asked to use her vocals to represent the raw emotion of the transitions into leaving life, the stages of dying, beginning with denial, anger, fear, resistance and finally acceptance, she aced it and created a Masterpiece that will pass the test of time, these three young Ladies who performed it here aced it as well, this song touches my Heart, Spirit and Soul every time I hear it, it's a Masterpiece !! I would like to suggest that you check out the entire Pulse Concert, have a visual as well as the music, I'm sure you will enjoy doing so !! God Bless.

WOW no words in this tune, just pure musical talent. Would love to see a rapper try this. Gee, why do I think rappers are NOT MUSICIANS, they just talk to a beat. They are lyracists not musicians. Many great song writers wrote lyrics much better than rappers. Rap is for people with no musical talent.

Great observations. Claudia, the lady at the end got acceptance, and resignation which is the more subdued part, and she carried it off beautifully, this is often overlooked buy some narrow minded people who see this as some sort of competition rather than the overall classic performance that it is.

The fact this is impactful , without any lyrics so many years later, really says a lot about this bands ability to keep us thinking and talking is worth diving down the rabbit hole. Considering when this was written and how things have not really changed should be a red flag for us. Check out Keep Talking, pretty much ask us to just listen to each other and we can work together to try and solve it despite our differences. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AVzM6cS1iME.html&pp=ygUXa2VlcCB0YWxraW5nIHBpbmsgZmxveWQ%3D

I pretty much like this story, not sure if it is true and who actually was it who told it : “The Great Gig In The Sky” - Pink Floyd The vocals were done by a petite British lady studio singer brought in by the Producer Allan Parsons named Claire Torrie. She did not know what they wanted her to sing. David Gilmour suggested she use her voice like a Saxophone… it worked great. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call god. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. The speaking at the start was recorded at Apple records with various employees answering a list of questions next to a small recording machine. The question was…“Are You afraid Of Dying? This one was an elderly gentleman who was a janitor in the place. Roger thought it would fit in the song at the beginning so there it is. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus.
