I think the term you are looking for is "polyjamorous" 😊 you would be surprised how many people say they identify or are into one specific type of music but are actually polyjamorous 😂. I admit I like songs from all type buy there are some types that takes an extra something for me to dig, like country or rap. Those musical genres require that something special to peck my intrest like Snoop Dogg, Miss Elliott, Dolly Parton, or Jon

In the early 2000s I worked in a restaurant with a preachers son. I had gone to the Houston show where Maynard was sick and the crowd sung for him all night. At the end he promised to add dates to the end of the tour to make up for the night. I immediately grabbed tix for a later show and offered a ticket to the preacher son if he would be the sober driver. 10 minutes in to the show he said "I feel like I'm on all kinds of drugs and can't explain how I feel, this is beyond amazing!" For weeks at work after that he never stopped saying thank you.

I think everyone here will agree that you don’t LISTEN to TOOL, you EXPERIENCE TOOL, and I can say that, from all of the reaction videos I’ve seen, that rappers and rap fans get that the most. The rappers almost always appreciate both the music and lyrics, and I love that and really appreciate it. Some people react on a surface level and I can tell they are not REALLY ready for TOOL, but you are ready. Keep listening to TOOL, you will find your life changing and the way you listen to music changing. TOOL just gives you something no other band can.

the beauty of these lyrics are that they could be meant in any way for the listener. the last lines "Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers" reminds me of a failed relationship, but for someone else it could remind them of the struggles of a successful one.

For "Tool" a recommendation is to definitely listen in to "Vicarious", my favourite song of this band - such great lyrics and overall an incredible song! Other than that, as we commented in the live chat, "Heilung", "Krigsgaldr" or "In Maidjan" are another great discovery for you - not quite "metal" but still somewhat related. Or Maria Franz' second project, "Euzen" with "Phobia" (or other songs) are great, too!

Maynard is in a category of his own when it comes to music. I'm 65 and living through the 60s, 70s, 80s and on and on taught me to open my mind to all sorts of genre. When I heard Maynard in A Perfect Circle I felt like finally I found a band I could listen to 24/7. Orestes and Judith are my favorite. Then came along Tool, I love every song. Danny Carey is a drummer God. Then came along Puscifer and my life was complete. Tyvm Maynard.

It's so very true what you say about being open minded and that being a metal/rock-head doesn't mean that you couldn't get experience such overwhelming feelings through rap. I pretty much grew up to rock and metal but it wasn't that long ago that a song from kendrick lamar actually made me cry because of such raw emotions and talent expressing himself... Giving other genres of music a chance isn't such a bad thing as some genre-constrained folks may propose, I mean, what's the worse that could happen? that you find out you like something you previously believed you wouldn't ever? oh wow, one more thing to like, so sad.

I really appreciate not pausing during Tool songs. You're right, it is very much a journey. I'd love to see you do Wings for Marie (Pt.1) and 10,000 Days (Pt.2). The two songs together tell about Maynard dealing with his mother's passing after a 27 year battle with major health issues and paralysis. It's deep and incredibly beautiful. One of the first Tool songs I heard that got me into them when I was a teenager. One of the more genuine reactions I've seen. Random story I've not told many people: The first time i heard this song was on the radio. I didn't really know them or the lyrics. In that middle part when he says "...atrophy any...". Teenage me thought he said Atrophy Annie. I eventually learned the lyrics. But to this day, I get a cartoon image in my mind of a comic book character named Annie who's super emaciated. But we follow her around as she goes on adventures. Like a Pippi Longstocking type of vibe.... lol Edit: 19:03 Yea.. that's the part that hooked me too... lol

Tool army here.. more Tool please ❤ Tool is the ONLY band that has ever hit me in a way no other band has. I didn't grow up listening to Tool. My husband introduced me to Tool when i was in my 30's. It took me about 2 years to fully grasp what i was hearing. Now, I'm at a point of no return. Lol. Both me and my husband have tried listening to many other bands. And, whilst we enjoy other music, nothing has come even close to Tool.

I get where ur coming from, I don't know if u listen to modest mouse, but if not I suggest listening to the album The Moon and Antarctica. Really pay attention to his lyrics. Only band that can illicit even close to the emotional shotgun that Tool does for me.

29:57 Maynard had very (very) religious mother, Judith Marie Keenan, who died after 27 years after being paralyzed. That's where 10000 days album naming come from. And yeah, I suppose being around her affected Maynards view on a religion. Unanswered prayers, no signs of presence in the hardest days is what he tells us in that album Tool lyrics is like magic - once you hear it as a fisting competition, other time as a deep philosofic texts

I am loving seeing your feelings, thoughts, and spirit move when you listen to this. It never occurred to me 'Schism' could also be seen through a religious lens, and i don't know why it didn't occur when i know a lot of the background of the band's lyrics. Thank you. Wishing you the best on your journey, mate.

I'm sure it's everything you think it is and lot's more. I think it's referring to all separate sides and the similarities and devision. Whether you're arguing with a brother, religion, or yourself it is necessary for growth or decay. And this song (I think) is exploring all of that.

Keep the good reactions up! If you want an instrumental that takes you in a journey you should check Night Verses, their new album is out of this world! They are the warm up band to tool in their European tour, and it is for a good reason haha I would suggest Arrival or maybe 8 Gates of pleasure!

These guys are true artists… many masterpieces. Though treat yourself to a cover of this song by Elephant Revival… they ain’t Tool, but they do the song justice, and also shows the respect quality musicians from other genres have for this exceptional group.

Yeah, it's like that! Welcome brother. This is what Tool does, reaches into the depths of your being, brings it all to the surface, let's you see it all for what it is, leaves you feeling fresh, sends back into the abyss with a smile on your face. I'll attach a link to "The Noose" I can't watch this particular video without loosing my shit. Keep Kleenex around when you watch it. Wow, I found it but boy was it buried. This is A Perfect Circle another band that Maynard sings in. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UJA0IVXj_No.htmlsi=mWTcfgd9NwAfVAao And while I'm at it here is a link for "The Remedy" this is Maynard's fun band Pucifer. Nothing to cerebral though there are a few gems such as "The Humbling River" if you want to look that one up but here's the remedy. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HivxFBB87-Y.htmlsi=5WxM4aPH5Dmu-KRj Oh, and, the mountain is real.

Great stuff as usual, brother. Your original take on the lyrics actually made me rethink the meaning of the song, which I've been listening to for the last 15 or so years. I think you'd love Lateralus, 46 & 2, Vicarious, and Wings for Marie. All are fantastic tracks. I always thought this song was an attempt to reconcile faith with reason. Both pieces fit in the sense that they provide answers for many aspects of life, but often seem to be at odds/unable to meet in the middle. Watching them fall away is a metaphor for growing up and either losing faith or holding on to it so fervently that science/reason seems at odds with your truest beliefs. For an unrelated but interesting suggestion, I think you'd have a fun time reacting to We Got the Moves by Electric Callboy.

My dude, I think you're ready for some Rush. That's a band from Canada that had both one of the best bass players in the history and literally the best drummer in the world according to whoever your think your favorite drummer is currently. Wait, no, first check Lateralus from Tool, but trust me - Rush will conquer your soul. I'd recommend starting with "Tom Sawyer", the rest will follow in the comments.

This takes me back to listening to this album, song back to back on my discman when I should have been sleeping back in about 2001. Teen me was suffering through chronic insomnia and it was the best escape, and it will never get old. This whole album is so masterfully crafted, and you can really unpeel it like an onion. The lyrics, the arrangement of guitars and drums, the chords, the electronic elements, the atmosphere. Like, the verse in schism doesn't have ANY complex chord progression but how good is it??? It doesn't need it. It's intentional and sounds great. Lateralus is a journey from song to song and it's awesome to see others on that journey, too.

I ignored rock for 20 years. Grew up on PE, the JB's and ATCQ. At 25 I "Discovered" Zeppelin and eventually Tool amongst so much good music. Still love my hip hop, but Tool STILL makes the hair on my arms stand up now and then. It just hits so hard. I'm 50 now. the more you listen to, the more you know.
