Had Two Nuns on vinyl, absolutely played the sh1t out of it. One of my favorite albums of all time. Thanks for posting this, albeit just finding it in the wake of Steve's passing.
@@mikesilva5085 Steve Albini was so good that night, that I went to see them again at The Mean Fidler (was it the following week? With Band of Susans?). If anything, RM were even better in a smaller venue
Missed Big Black as hadn't heard them, made up for it a year later by seeing this lot in Newcastle, Chester & London, two weeks after this gig. Not bad for a spotty 17-year-old! Best thing he did by far. Thanks very much for uploading.
Also saw them at Newcastle Riverside. I sort of remember there being a few issues outside the venue that night. Albini was on his usual acerbic & funny as fuck form that night.
Dude...Incredible footage!!! I love steve albini and this band in particular was just so raw and unlike any other since.Thank you so much for preserving this piece of history. Much respect and cheers to you man!!! 🎶💥😊
@@RoadToRuane Ye. BoS first and not that great, DJ miles better than on their album. Our man wore a tight leather strap round his waste to which he attached his guitar. At the end - an encore of Budd I think - he unhitched his guitar and slammed it down on the floor. There was no booze as the students union didn't like the band name and water was passed out from the stage. I was right by the stacks at the right of the stage.
Thanks for sharing. Saw Rapeman, Dinosaur jr and the Band of Susans at an agricultural college in Bedford UK Oct 1988, stunning gig. It's such a shame that there are not more live recordings of Rapeman out there. Perhaps Mr Albini has some dusty cassettes in box in his basement?
@@djefferson5669 Do you know if there's a cassette of the Frankfurt, Germany show at Cooky's on November 1, 1988? I shot a video of the show but the bass and drums monitors are right in my face and you can barely hear a word from Albini. If I could find an audience audio recording it might go far in making this video perfect.
big black and rapeman are top 5 musical acts of all time for me, super sad for steves family but honestly more sad for myself because i was supposed to see shellac next month!!!!!!
Those "Memphis" branded Fender knock-offs from Japan were actually pretty solid budget guitars. It's amazing that Sims has been devoted to that Memphis J Bass for his entire career!
Johnny Thunders played a cheap tv yellow Les Jr. W/single pickup. He proved it was the player much much more than the equipment. How many times did Thunders pawn it for a fix?! How many licks to the center? How many fix’s for Johnny? The world may never know. But the sound Thunders got out that thing was magnificent and will be imitated forever!
They played two shows at The Rat on this date. Only one was videotaped for Billy, and the openers for this show (early?) didn't include Bastro. The vault is completely uploaded, as far as videos from 1988-1999. A few more might re-surface from this era, then on to the 2000's.
@@RoadToRuane Rapeman 09-29-1988 The Rat 1051am 31.3.23 bastro was cool.... though, of course, similar in scope to big black/rapeman.... as for footage... dunno... generic vhs seems far more suited to recording shit via digital media. no idea what i was gonna say other than the highballs ARE probably dangling afore me and vic and bob might be worth watching this arvo on the telly... no, really, what was the kim gorden panties reference all about? as for dead budd jokes - too soon, perhaps? ahhh just when yer think yer hypothesized the fuk outta these guys you find albini is still the same old fried egg as he's allus been. and that cruddy culture is still to the fore.................... true, man.. Budd Dwyer references are too much for me. next time albini does a recording ask him to record al his fav glam rock tracks metal tracks and pop tracks.. it'd make a definitive double lp for me, at least... n.b some of the dudes who like this kindda shit aren't retarded.
If Bastro didn’t open for this set then I must’ve been at the other Rat gig that day, standing at front of stage in front of David (bass.) It was incredible. The openers I saw were Bastro and local street musician legend Mr Butch (RIP), who I recall wouldn’t stop playing when his time was up and it took some effort to persuade / force him to leave the stage.
