The unexpected demise of the esteemed painter Raffaello Santi on Good Friday in 1520, at the age of 37, reverberated throughout the city of Rome and the artistic circles of the time. Little did the world anticipate that his name would become legend and that the two angels on his most famous painting, the Sistine Madonna, would become his most reproduced and recognisable motif in the modern era.
Raphael's life and career were marked by a prodigious talent that manifested at a remarkably young age. Born in Urbino, Italy, in 1483, he showcased an extraordinary aptitude for painting and drawing that eventually propelled him into the illustrious triumvirate of High Renaissance artists, alongside Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. His ability to infuse his works with harmony, equilibrium, and emotional profundity distinguished him as a master of his craft.
Among his most celebrated and revered creations stands the "Sistine Madonna." Painted between 1512 and 1513, this masterpiece stands as a testament to Raphael's artistic prowess and encapsulates the very spirit of the High Renaissance. The "Sistine Madonna" eloquently displays Raphael's exceptional talent in capturing ethereal beauty, profound expressions, and intricate compositions. The central depiction of the Madonna and Child, flanked by the enigmatic figures of Saints Sixtus and Barbara, conjures a palpable sense of divine presence that resonates with spectators even in the present day.
Central to Raphael's myth is his rivalry with the equally esteemed Michelangelo. The two artists, while pursuing distinct artistic visions, engaged in a friendly yet intense competition that spurred them to greater heights of creativity. Michelangelo's powerful sculptures and bold painting style contrasted with Raphael's finesse and elegance, making their artistic duel a defining feature of the Renaissance landscape.
Amidst the myth of Raphael, an intriguing subplot revolves around the "Sistine Madonna" itself. This iconic painting, despite its fame, embarked on a tumultuous journey that adds to its mystique. Commissioned by Pope Julius II, the artwork eventually found its way to the Royal Gallery of Dresden in the 18th century, where it was admired by countless visitors. However, history took a disheartening turn when the painting disappeared at the end of World War II, sparking a protracted dispute over its rightful ownership.
The saga of the "Sistine Madonna" being taken to Dresden and subsequently looted by the Soviets underscores the painting's enduring significance and the lengths to which people were willing to go to possess it. This tale, intertwined with the broader narrative of Raphael's myth, serves as a poignant reminder of art's ability to transcend time and geopolitical boundaries, becoming an object of cultural intrigue and international discourse.
On this Arts Unveiled Special, we dispell the myth of Raphael, birthed from his untimely passing and nurtured by the cultural, historical, and narrative components of his age, continues to thrive across centuries.

I am 68, went Harrow to Cambridge, and St Martins art schools, had a postgraduate degree in commercial illustration, long familiar with Rafael's drawing and the cherubs plagiarised in design work, but I was never really aware of the Sistine Madonna painting they appear in. The cherubs are just perenially iconic, they are make that painting like a pop song with a catchy chorus you know, but the words, verse melody, and name of the song is obscure.

Disegno means drawing, so I’m not sure why the narrator kept calling it "disegnodrawing”. Also very sad that so many tourists at the Vatican couldn’t identify Raphael’s art. The Vatican Museums are full of his work. His home is open as a museum in Urbino. Worth the journey to Le Marche.

Maybe it's a general Italian Renaissance-reference because the idea including a sketch (called disegno aswell) was a very important part compared to the actual painting that was often not even carried out by the famous painter himself. God's ideas were supposed to be involved in the moment a 'genius' like Raffael had the idea for the painting..

@@elizabethingram9784 yes disegno also means design- the translation in the documentary is still wonky. You wouldn’t call something "design drawing” in the way they described as in a higher form of drawing. It’s repetitive and an incorrect translation for what they’re describing.

To say it was a perfect painting is ignorant for lack of a better word. He was a great artist but in my opinion a bit overrated. Don’t get me wrong he deserves a place in history.

The WORST, really the WORST 'documentary' on Raphael that I had ever seen. It changes the reflection on a great artist into a gallery of stupid remarks and images of vulgar people. That the 'director' takes a course on filming, please.

@@DWHistoryandCulture Dear sirs: first of all, I apologize for the zesftul of my remarks, which were not intended to be rude but to express my disappointment. Now, regarding the documentary, what bothered me was that instead of taking his time for showing the Sixtine Madonna carefully and slowly (as beauty must be shown), the director gives preference to the image of a scholar and, after that, to that of tourists that have nothing to do with the work. I remember the impact of having it before me in a visit that I made to Dresde some years ago just in order to appreciate the painting, and it is impossible to do that in a second, which is doubly absurd to show what I have mentioned. I think that a 'subjective' standpoint (namely, that of recreating the people that are supposed to be in touch with art) is the worst option in this case. I could still add more remarks but I do not want to bore you with them. Thanks.

Far too idealized and the ' religious ' opening is cringe worthy

A genius artist is not a God. Hagiography warning.

23:55. The translation is wrong. Raphael used tempera (egg yolk mixed with pigment) NOT oil paint to do corrections.

Si vede che li italiani pensano i spaghetti, come e' possibile che su un grande artista italiano scrivono i stranieri e non li italiani?

In reality, the correct article is GLI, as it precedes a word starting with SP, ST etc. I am Italian. :)
