Vanderzee was not wide open. There was a safety bearing down on that play. In a different situation you throw it anyway but in that situation you preserve the field goal opportunity.

Wins a win but let’s hold our horses. Washington is not very good up front defensively and their offense put up nearly 400 yards of offense. They could’ve scored 30 today. I will say we are moving the ball better this year but can’t capitalize inside the 5 to save our life. 8-4 with a easy schedule.

Thank God I'm not the only sane person here. I'll give Iowa all the credit for their first 20 points and that interception in the third. But the rest is all on Washington. I can't understand why they started putting reserves in on the offensive and defensive line when the score was 23 -10 early in the fourth and started trying to convert 4th and longs deep in their own territory. Fun fact. Going into this game, Washington was ranked 11 in the country for offensive yards per game but dead last in red zone scoring. Iowas defense was ranked dead last in red zone defense allowing opponents to score 100% of the time .. all touchdowns.

So Washington pulled their entire starting offense and defensive lines when it was 23-10? I don't know who the starters are, so I'll take your word for it. It was 37-10 when they put in the 2nd string qb. This in relation to a comment below.

Outside of the potential national champions, Iowa has manhandled every B1G team they've played.

I wouldn't call it manhandled. You do realize the score was 23-10 when Washington started putting reserves in early in the fourth quarter, right? How many fourth down long conversions did Washington attempt in their own territory? 6? It's easy to hang 40 on a team practically giving you the ball near the red zone when you're playing against reserves. Don't take too much out of this game. I think Washington treats every game like a scrimmage right now as they are learning a new offense, like Ferentz did his first year at Iowa.

Dominated? Where? Yards? Nope. Time of possession? Nope. Passing? Nope. Johnson 7.8 yards per carry/Coleman 9 yards per carry. That was a weird game. Washington came into the game with the worst redzone offense in the country while also ranking 11 in yards per game. Iowa came in with the worst red zone defense in the country giving up scores 100% of the time... All touchdowns. Lets play devils advocate with some stats. What happened when Iowa started drives inside their 30? Had one nice TD drive and two 3 and outs. Thats a problem. Its better than two years ago when they scored once out of every 14 drives where they start from inside their own 30. Washington seemed to move the ball very easily on iowas defense.... Thats concerning. Thank God for their poor special teams play (which has been their undoing all year next to poor red zone performance). Its also important to note that the score was 23-10 when Washington put their reserve Offensive and Defensive line in in the fourth quarter.... Which was weird. Then there was all of the 4th down conversion attempts in long yardage situations deep in their own territory. Six .... Which is weird. Lets be honest. Its easy to score 40 when your opponent is literally giving you the ball on downs drive after drive at mid field or deep in their territory. 3 of those drives started between washingtons 30 and 38 yard line and iowa did a three and out each time and kicked a field goal. Thats a problem. Washington marched the ball up and down the field for most of the game. Call it what it is. Iowa still isnt very good yet and Washington is prone to self destructing.... Just check out their game stats for any team they lost to. Statistically, they dominate their opponents but choke or get weird coaching decisions, etc. Washington beat Washington. Give the credit where its due.

Washington QB is 0 for 35 attempts after being flushed from the pocket. Michigan couldn't get him flushed out of the pocket. Washington offensive and defense lines were all used up after the half and had to sub in untested players. Washington 4th and what ever, was foiled by sending in 8 and flushing the QB causing the turnovers.

Iowa is last at red zone is mainly because the outside defense ALWAYS has their backs to the QB and never see it coming. But the bright side is they get to be the first to see the receiver catch the ball that they have never seen coming towards them, and get called for the penalty if the receiver misses the catch. So that's a win-win for the opposing team!

@@joewinkler2168 Washington coach addressed that question about pulling the starters at 23 -10. He put in mostly 3rd stringers on both sides of the ball. He didn't want to risk injury to his starters and backups. I find that odd considering it was 23-10 with a whole quarter to go. It's not like Iowa was dominating at that point. I'm thinking he's doing the Ferentz first two seasons thing. Treating each game like a scrimmage where the goal isn't to win, it's to get better.
