Rapid Roy that Stock Car Boy a Jim Croce Cover Song by Hey Tomorrow a Jim Croce Tribute Duo / heytomorrowcrocetribute David Komel: Vocal & Guitar Tim Crookall: Guitar
To me, this is a modern American folk song. Instead of a riverboat captain or a railroad engineer, JIm wrote about a daredevil entertainer. Great cover guys.
When you sign on to take on the really daunting task of paying really proper tribute to a tryly one-of-a-kind songwriter--& not just for one tune, but their body of work--is to take a huge bite that very, very few end up able to chew properly [I just realized that's an especially solild metaphor since "took-a-bigger-bite-than-could-chew-" performances sound like their mouths are half-filled with somthing they shouldn't be lol). Jim Croce is a HUGE bite to take. On top of **that**....well, there's a lot of pretty crooners with some jazzy chords that could make "Opeator" work.Heck even a Dan-Fogelberg-ie type could credibly belt uot "I Got A Name". Your jazzier, grittier duo ["Leroy Brown" & "Don't Mess With ANYONE Whose Name Rhymes With "im" FOR God Sake" before he shortened it.] are a bit bigger bite & SO easy to ruin or turn into something closer to polka than a finger-snappin', toe-tappin' urban shuffle...but the bones are so good the majority of tasteful pros can get a crowd vibing with them. BUT YOU TAKE ON RAPID ROY?!?! This is just, beginning to end, pure joyful Jim Croce, with a really particular bounce & melodic lilt and--and this is absolutely **crucial**--a little smille you can hear on the musical storyteller's lips. Add to that a particular jazzy, upbeat intro that drags a little Chuck Berry/Jerry Reed into the mix--just to make it that little bit **extra** hard to really nail tone-wise, & something you DEFINITELY need a really talented sideman as good as JC's--and, I mean, to really do that justice...well, I'll just say I know a lot of really decent seasoned players, & I would caution any of them against taking on such a fool's errand with such a high chance of flopping it when "Time In A Bottle" is just a-sittin' there. And then...as if sent by The Universe to be the Exception That Proves The Rule (of how, you know, I'm never wrong)--you moth******ers just go ahead and nail it beautifully. Truly. That was AWESOME. And as you might have discerned my opinions are strong & I'm pretty stingy with the bright shiny ones. Rreally great. As another hi-fidelity "All-One-Guy" faithful-homage effort, just for your possible musical enjoyment, might I suggest "The Zevonaires"--I mention them in case, as the last other homage group to really hit really hard enough to sit up & take notice, whatever it takes to achiece that kind of resonant musical fidelity to such rich source material that you inarguably have in common might be enough to spark your interest. But just to be mysterious & tantalizing, I'm going to a real dick and NOT TELL YOU WHO IT IS "The Zevonaires" ARE A TRIBUTE BAND **FOR**!!! BWAHAHAHA!! EVIL, or WHAT??!! It's probably KILLING you to know!!, lol. Anyway: top marks on a favorite tune (ABOVE classic: take any crowded bar, anyone you asked could easily name a half-dozen Croce' chart-toppers....but the real devotee, that can sing your every chorus of Roy by heart without a stutter, Roy is probably the first song he'd list...I'm saying, it's not "Rabble-Acclaimed" Roch-&-Roll-Hall-Of-Fame-With-One-Direction-But-No-Warren-Zevon "Aware-Winner"...I mean the Acrual Clasics...). You guys nailed it. Keep up the good work & I won't have to come back & abuse with another sixteen-jillion-word 'comment'. [Which, betcha didn''t guess the big PLOT TWIST arond page 637, where it turns out to be a convoluted COMPLIMENT! WHOOO, who saw THAT coming? On the INTERNET? On RU-vid?? In a **COMMENT**?!?....man, you talk about your "shock reveals"....!!!] [--Still...**nothin'** like when you find out who "The Zevonaires" cover...!! Man oh MAN I wish I could see your dang face when THAT curtain goes up, hooo-eee. ] Best wishes, Mark "Troublemonkey" Collen
