(ASSOCIATED PRESS) Millions of Americans sweated through a scorching weekend as temperatures soared across the U.S., while residents were rescued from floodwaters that forced evacuations across the Midwest. One person died during flooding in South Dakota, the governor said.
From the mid-Atlantic to Maine, across the Great Lakes region, and throughout the West to California, public officials cautioned residents about the dangers of excessive heat and humidity. Forecasters say the heat wave will continue early in the week in the Southeast, portions of the South and the Plains.
At the borders of South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota, floodwaters rose over several days. In northwest Iowa, 13 rivers flooded the area, said Eric Tigges of Clay County emergency management. Entire neighborhoods - and at least one entire town - were evacuated, and the Iowa town of Spencer imposed a curfew Sunday for the second night in a row after flooding that surpassed the record set in 1953.
“When the flood gauge is underwater, it’s really high,” Tigges said at a news conference organized by Spencer officials.
Gov. Kim Reynolds declared a disaster for 21 counties in northern Iowa, including Sioux County. In drone video posted by the local sheriff, no streets were visible, just roofs and treetops poking above the water.
National Guard troops were helping with water rescues and transporting needed medications lost in flooding.

It’s an over topping. The dam has not failed.

REALLY? SO WATER FLOWING OUT OF THE GENERATOR HOUSE ROOF IS NORMAL HMMM? when the sides of the dam wash away it's a bust. both sides will be gone soon as the storm rain from the canadian storm that merged with the south dakota iowa storm hit in the next day or two. expect another 6"-12" i live on the mississippi north of this place and have already seen another 4" increase today alone from last nights storm that was way north of me by a 100+ miles.

@@aprilgeneric8027 y’all seem to think the spill way is the dam. The dam which is between two abutments that are drilled into bedrock is fine. The gen house is flooded. Again that’s not an integral structure to the dam. It’s built on top of it. The spill way is outside of the abutments which makes it not part of the dam. This is a top over not a dam failure. The dam will be there after this and the spill way will be rebuilt; unless the bedrock washes out but that’s not very likely.

There is a hole x2 the size of the dam letting water flow through, and it’s almost drained
@HappyHarryHardon

@@xximortalghostxx That hole is where the spillway was which failed when it was over topped. As you can see the dam and it’s abutments are still in place. Words matter.

People seem to think the spill way is part of the dam structure. The dam is fine and the spill way will be rebuilt. The town should add a debris line across up stream though to keep the water at the gates free flowing.

Which spillway? There was never a spillway, ithe water washed away a parking lot and parts of the power station to find a new path.

@@danielrose1392 you need to google earth the location and look for yourself. It’s pretty obvious where the spillway was.
