The Rapidan Dam is in a precarious state after recent flooding of the Blue Earth River, prompting Minnesota officials on Monday to warn the public that the structure is in "imminent failure condition."
The Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office said the river has cut around the sides of the dam and debris has been accumulating in the water. It announced the "imminent failure condition" status and notified those who may be impacted.

It sure looks like it might have been the spillway. In any case, the news reports about the dam being breached are just flat-out wrong. Had the water not gone where it's going, it would have over-topped the dam and THEN it would have breached. It still might. i've been watching the flow coming parallel to the dam front. That flow has to be digging into the riverbed at the base. It's not going to hold forever.

guys keep an eye out on the water fall on the other side..look at the notch in the other bank where the tree fell in. the water fall is moving backwards towards the dam. in may under cut the dam on that side.

I live not far from the dam. many people have givin up sandbagging their homes, and business's, just accepting the loss. More heavy rain coming tonight. Many field were never able to be planted. The fields that were all have very large lakes. The dam has effectively failed already

This dam has no spillway in place. The average water went from the normal 800 cubic feet per second to 34,000 cubic feet per second. So even if it had one it wouldn't have kept up.

I heard that trees , which normally rest against the bottom, were stirred up to the top , causing a dam up blockage against the dam, forcing the water to route itself around the dam.

From other views, it looks like there is a rather competent layer of bedrock that the water is flowing over. Gotta imagine that the dam is keyed to that underlying bedrock. The bedrock in that area is probably either limestone or dolomite, and is rather resistant. Should be interesting....Any MN Geologist familiar with that specific area?

Limestone over there. It is on the southern edge of the driftless area. I'm not a geological expert, but I like rocks.

@@jonkluver7912That White House is probably a goner but I agree, the dam is holding up. The more the flow digs out a spillway, that should relieve some of the strain on the dam itself. However, when the waters recede I suspect the dam with be removed. I have not heard, is the river expected to keep rising?

@@mplsmark222 I'm a local to the Rapidan area, and they have been talking about either removing it or else doing a 15 million dollar remodel to it. I suspect they will have a good chance to remove it now. It served its purpose, but would be nice to get another dam out of our rivers for the fish and wildlife and also people that like to canoe or kayak that stretch.

Looks like the debris will ultimately save the dam since it has caused a significant drop in the pressure to the dam by rerouting the water flow to outlying area.

Letting debris clog the top is a big no no it puts tremendous stress on the top of the dam which is the most vulnerable. Should of had a crane in place way before this. Looks to me like they don't have a plan together for when something like this happens.

Yeah they should have had nets up stream to catch debris. They still could have people out there clearing it one crane to lift the debris another crane to have a safety harness on the worker(s)

No, they had a plan and are currently following it. Once the dam personnel reported the bank was eroding and creating a channel the plan went into effect. Unfortunately the plan was the catastrophic failure scenario plan, since once the channel was being bypassed the failure was inevitable.

Looks like a lack of maintenance. Clean out the logs, allowing water to overflow evenly and normally. If it’s weather related it should have been an event that could be mitigated. But watching it deteriorate is far more exciting. And it garners huge public sympathy and therefore more funding.

I can't figure out why a drag line or cane can't be brought in to remove some of the logs? The side opposite the break could hold a large boom cane with grappling hooks to pull logs up. Had this in New London, Mn many years ago only that was a ice blocking the dam. I lived 50 yards away, men were there all night chipping and sawing ice.

Nonstop rainstorms for the past month. I'm from the area and yes, the weather has been extreme. This is once in a century flooding. I have never seen anything like this. Basically all of Southern Minnesota is under a flood warning and the nearby town of Waterville is entirely underwater

Watch how the sheer land simply disappears with the water. This is something we've seen a lot in recent years. The water simply removes meters thick layers of land. We'll soon make our own sandstone off the coast by making it ourselves warm like it was in the Permian. I hope everybody stays save in the affected area!

The “downstream town” is Mankato which already has a very robust levy. Mankato will be fine, though 169 and other roads will be affected (as well as businesses and individuals directly adjacent to the river).

@@christinemarie5623 yeah, but greater minnesota (areas outside the Twin Citiies and other major metropolitan areas) are deeply red. While Blue Earth County as a whole voted Blue, thats because of Mankato. Blue Earth County (which owned the dam after NSP-now Xcel-didn’t want to repair it in the 1960s) is more conservative since it is more focused on everything except Mankato since the city takes care of its self.
