It's Brian's folk/country song about time dilation 😮.... The volunteers went to space to search for a new world. Because they travelled near the speed of light it was a 1 year journey for them but when they returned they realised that on Earth the 100 years have passed and their loved ones are dead... Only their (grand)children welcomed them ("your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me")😢

Bri even back then was teaching us ;) I remember sitting in a Physics class and suddenly going "oh shit" getting what the song was about.

I met Brian in 2001 and chatted to him about this and Total Eclipses etc for 15 minutes and he is a lovely genius! I wrote an update on this song I called 2239 in 2010 (to the same music) but I couldn't get it to him yet!

In Einstein's Theory of Relativity ther is a portion about time dilation where he theorized that nothing could travel faster than the speed of light so if you were to reach such a speed time would either stand still or go backwards. Brian wanted to write a Folk Song but instead of making it about the past as most folk songs are written, he wanted to make it about the future so he wrote this little song '39 and of course left it up to us to put the first two digits in front of the number. So as Iris states below, the song is all about some astronauts going up in space, losing contact with earth, and in a year later (to them) they finally do return to earth, long presumed to be dead, only to find that though they had only aged one year, earth and everyone on it had aged 100 years so all of the ones they loved had already passed on. Brian has a PhD in Astrophysics so this is right in his wheelhouse.

... and just a bit of trivia: although space travel began in the year of '39 (we assume in 1939) it's a fact that planet Mercury is 0.39 astronomical units away from the sun ...😮 Freddie would say: Well done Brian, darling ... 😅

That was the aim…a folk song but about space travel rather than sailing the 7 seas adventures. So much fun when they did it live, although Freddie sang.

Brian was they philosophical one of the bunch! As stated below he had PHD in astrophysics and is very into space and its effects on man and the earth in general. Freddie did the song in live shows, which was done with Love of My Life usually. Thanks for all your reactions, and please do "It's Late' or add to your list.

Thank you for this reaction. I love hearing Brian’s and Roger’s voices as leads sometimes, only because I recognize they’re amazing and could/woukdgave been lead singers in any groups but Queen, which had Freddie, which…goes without saying. But the song Let Me Live they share lead vocals, and I quite enjoy it. And though Brian sings awesomely, (check out his own version -solo- of Too MuchLove Will Kill You--he was going through a divorce, and it’s powerful, the video) I heard an interview where he said he realized later on in his career that he didn’t like singing as lead vocal live in his other solo endeavors when he felt his voice and guitar were like two instruments that didn’t exactly jive with each other. He was a true guitarist, one of the best, though has an awesome and warm voice which added quite a lot the harmonizing vocals that Queen were famous for. Hope you keep reacting to Queen .

“39'” was not only written by Brian May, but the studio version had Brian singing the lead (Freddie sang lead of "39" during their live concerts.). It was inspired by his love of space travel ( also remember that Brian has a BSc in Physics from Imperial College and has since gained a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the same institution). It’s about a group of pioneers who go searching for another planet to colonize, but due to Special Relativity and time dilation, they come back to a strange Earth they no longer know. Just like any great science fiction writer, May uses this futuristic story to explore universal themes, such as lost love and loneliness. The story is phrased like a tale of old-time explorers, on their journey to a new land. As Brian May told BBC Radio One, in 1983: "It’s a science fiction story. It’s the story about someone who goes away and leaves his family and because of the time dilation effect, when you go away, the people on earth have aged a lot more than he has when he comes home. He’s aged a year and they’ve aged 100 years so, instead of coming back to his wife, he comes back to his daughter and he can see his wife in his daughter, a strange story.". " I think, also, I had in mind a story of Herman Hesse which I think is called ‘The River.‘ A man leaves his hometown and has lots of travels and then comes back and observes his hometown from the other side of the river. He sees it in a different light having been away and experienced all those different things. He sees it in a very illuminating way, cause I felt a little bit like that about my home at the time as well having been away and seen this vastly different world of rock music. Totally different from the way I was brought up and I had those feelings about home." "So usually the song, I think people generally usually won’t admit it, but I think when most people write songs there are more than one level to them. They’ll be about one thing on the surface but underneath they’re probably, even unconsciously, trying to say something about their own life, their own experience. I know in my own stuff there is something like that." FYI - Little known story... Brian had asked bassist John Deacon to play double bass as a joke but forgot to tell him that he was joking. So a couple of days later he found Deacy in the studio with the big double bass, and he had already learned to play it.
