They also had another hit, “The Witch Queen of New Orleans”. I’m a 65 yr old Indigenous man and I was in grade school when this was a hit! Music brings people together and we are all humans. Thank you for the memories Cliff. Love your channel. Aho’!
Didn't have this on 8 track but I the day I got rid of my 8 track player & about 60-70 tapes I remember thinking, don't do it! But I moved so often as a teenager & in my 20s I was sick of moving everything. Should've kept it all- just for the memories.
Your reaction is a common one. And it does matter because they were out there representing 50 years ago. Happy you got to “see” this additional piece of rock history. ❤
About nine years ago I did a cover of this song (vocal). One day I was shocked to see a comment complementing me on it, because it was from one of the band members, Butch Rillera (drums, percussion, backing vocals 1973-1977). That really meant a lot to me.
That was a form of charcoal on his face. Native Americans use what is called smudge sticks for purification ceremonies. They are bundles of dried herbs which they burn and then smudge some of the ashes on their face. Just like they would use war paint, they had other ceremonial traditions which were offerings to the spirits.
Redbone was a term used by the cajuns to describe a native american and european half-breed. The native tribes used it to describe people of two tribes.
Fun reaction. I just Loved the look on your face when the realization hit. Been a hit in my life since the days of the transistor radio. But now I'll forever have StarLord dancing in my head, and that's OK too!
There is a French phone commercial that uses this song and it touches my heart every time. Back in the day we called that mustache a Fu Manchu. Not sure if it has an updated name.
There is a great Native music scene in the US and Canada ranging from rock, hip-hop, rap, blues, country and traditional that people never hear about because it's not mainstream. Hugely talented people combing cultures.
I'm 65, and this was such a popular song back in the day. Midnight Special, and shows like it back then, were our form of being introduced to the actual artists. You had to wait until a certain time and day to see them on TV. We're older than you, so of course you're "late to the party" - us older folk love watching people discover what we already were blessed with! 😊
That mustache/beard I’ve always called the “Fu man chu” not sure if that’s right or the spellings right but that’s what we always called it. Redbone was awesome, loved this song and some of their others. Witch Queen From New Orleans is also great! This song just makes me happy!❤
Have you heard of Snotty Nose Rez Kids? Native Hip Hop duo, kind of fun. It's always good to see a new guy meet Redbone - authentically indigenou. Others used it as a gimmick but were not actually native Also, great meaningful lyrics on Cherokee People from Paul Revere and The Raiders. This was in the time of those great Billy Jack movies I loved as a kid.
Chief Joseph Riverwind dances (worship dance) in full native, often. He'll be opening (again) for Aaron in Florida this year. The chief is the one who does songs like War Dance. Beautiful video. He explains what the dance song is about, during one of his live chats. No, he ain't no Redbone, but the spirit is close. There's only one Redbone. There's only one Chief Joseph. They both rock.
horseshoe mustache. We're actually leaving in a couple weeks to New Mexico. My auntie is 92. My dad was the babe of 17. My grandparents were Mexican & Native American. Before my auntie brings her spice to heaven, my Littles are finally old enough to soak up all her stories. Glad you found redbone. ☺️
Man, I was 14 when this came out. And, if it makes you feel any better, I didn’t not know they were natives either for a loooonnnnggg time. Radio doesn’t let you see who you’re listening to.
They also did another song that was popular Witchy woman of New Orleans, give it a listen, I am almost 72 and still rock out to them with my herbal meds.
Did anyone tell you this is the opening song to guardians of the galaxy? Love your channel thanks for all you do I look forward to watching every day❤❤
Redbone has a lot of great songs. I suggest checking out more of Redbone when you get a chance. I can't and won't suggest just one, I have no particular favorite, they are all so good.
I don't get that. Which is the Red and which is the Bone? I'm guessing Red is for the Native Americans, being the derogatory term is based on the fact they all supposedly have red skin. Which they don't! Just like Asians aren't yellow. Etc.
Redbone was one of my favorite groups of the early 1970s. I saw them in concert at William and Mary College on Jan 21, 1972. They rocked the house. They were all dressed in native outifits, white leather leggings with fringe, naked from the waste up with breast plates and turquoise arm bands. They had a number of hits, this, and probably Witch Queen of New Orleans were their biggest hits. You can hear the Native American musical influence in all of their songs. Come and Get Your Love has become such an iconic song of the period. I've heard it in movies and TV again and again. I think the most fun and satisfying thing I've ever seen is Christopher Walken dancing to this song. BTW, I think the moustache is called a 'fu manchu', but I think this was face paint.
Back in the day, we never knew what the artists looked like until they did The Midnight Special. I remember watching this when it aired. I had no idea either, but I loved it then and now.
@@jeangrissom1071An older cousin went to a Charlie Pride concert and was surprised that he was black. To his credit he stayed because he enjoyed his music. We need a new Midnight Special where a band/performer is given 45 minutes to perform they music they want to perform.
@@TheCpage66 I’ve been introducing my grandkids the oldest is 12, to music from the 80’s back, they all love Dio, I took the oldest to see Ted Nugent. She had fun though near the end it got to be a little much for her because of how loud he is.
My people usually do country but Redbone is magnificent Motown. I want this played at my funeral. And hey. Thanks for something you said. We are one. I think my wars are over. I'm looking forward to folks like you improving on things. Keep the good. Trash the bad. Never be ashamed of your ancestors. Be ashamed if you repeat their mistakes. They made those mistakes so you could learn from them, so they did you justice.
I've always loved this song! It's sooo good! Pat Vegas (backing vocals/bassist) is the only living original member left of this group. The lead singer (Lolly Vegas) is his brother
There is a mustache called a Fu Man Chu (sp?) That is from centuries ago Asian countries ( primarily China) that looks similar to that, but this gentleman was the one who did the native dance, and that is "painted" on. (possibly they used soot).
Man, I was 14 when this came out. And, if it makes you feel any better, I didn’t not know they were natives either for a loooonnnnggg time. Radio doesn’t let you see who you’re listening to.
You need to keep going down that '70s rabbit hole some of the best music ever! Midnight Special was something we all looked forward to every week just to see what bands were going to be on there playing live.
I sang and danced to this song when it first came out so I'm way behind you. I found out they were a Native/Mexican band a few years ago. In the 70s there was no such thing as youtube or even computers or MTV. 😂
There was a song written by another Native American artist, Jim Pepper, the more popular version was recorded by Brewer and Shipley in the late 1970’s. The song title is: Witchi-Tai-To. It was more a FM hit, meaning that it was played more often on the progressive FM stations of the time line when Scott Muni ran WNEW-FM in NYC.
I remember this episode of Midnight Special a childhood staple. There are many amazing performances on this show. Great reaction as usual my friend and Peace ✌️ 🙂
My Junior year in high school and this was my jam forever! (Is still one of my favorites). I think they are Native American & some Mexican/Native American. ❤
This is so loop/repeat all day long worthy. I love it!! ❤️ and ❤️ ♥️ 💖 💕 😍 It's so sad how politics has twisted their message into the opposite feeling. I agree, we need to get this song 🎵 & band out there again! Barbarosa stache? (Charles Bronson)
Starts off with a REDBONE! Derogatory term today, for obvious reasons. But, I guess if the whole band is Native American, which I forgot they were, it's gotta be okay. Right, Gen Z???!!! I do really like this song too! Haven't heard it since I was a kid, probably 40 years ago!
This is so awesome! We all need to love each other and be kind. This is a not a good world we live in right now. Cling to your faith and pray. Love your reaction!
My Man Cliff, it is 4:am Saturday morning and I'm sitting in my recliner drinking coffee jamming my ass out!! I'm surprised you have never heard this song before. I'm also native American!! What a way to start my day!! Come and get your ❤️ Love!!☕️🫶
To (kind of) put things in perspective (think of the NFL) imagine if Redbone had called themselves The Redskins. Right or wrong or indifferent, it'd be enough to get everyone up in arms, arguing & fighting & speechifying so vociferously that eventually they'd forget what they were arguing about! Cliff, you've got great instincts, great song that I haven't heard since, idk, before you were born anyway. Keep up the good work!
You should listen to Babe Ruth the lp 'First Base' 1973 you'll hear alot of Hip-Hop influence. Especially with "The Mexican" and you RU-vidrs should go back to the original roots of Hip-Hop. Cold Crush, Fantastic 5, Furious 5, Pumpkin, Treacherous 3, Funky Four, Crash Crew, Busy Bee, love Bug, and all the original pioneers who really opened the doors for the 90's generation. ✌️
