The fact that for years RM would translate English hate comments to the rest of the group into positive comments so that only he knew what was being said to/about them still breaks my heart.

Everytime I watch reactors watch this series, especially the early years I feel so proud of our boys. Everybody works hard but their hard work was tempered with sincerity. And talent..no denying that. And yes whatever they comment in their nusic resonates across age groups. Their songs speak to you whether in your past present or future. Btw I am glad you finally managed to distinguish V from jimin and jungkook🤣

D’Angelo’s brown Suga was a hit. He was clothed. He then released how does it feel where he stood in front of the camera naked-enough to see the what I call Ken doll creases. When Korean students finish their school day, they then attend cram school. The pressure is suffocating. Parents drill in you the importance of studying, making great grades to get into a prestigious University ( parents have to brag) Graduate. You get a good job. They tell the kids they won’t have a good future if they don’t do well on a test and get into one of the best University’s. SUGA’s parents wanted him to get a safe respectable government job. If a kid doesn’t get selected as a rookie trainee, he or she can go to another company and try to debut in an a new group. You must listen from the beginning because they were not liked by the masses because in part they were talking about the school system, parental pressure, parents controlling their futures, not allowing them to pursue their dreams. Adults were not feeling the reality of it all. BTS, challenged the norms. SK use to have the highest suicide rate of any industrialized country. Students, actors,idols, businessmen, elderly people committed suicide. Mental health issues were not taken seriously. enough to have mental health providers. To seek help one would leave the country and go to England for example. Bang created the group to be a positive example for the youth to look up to. Music for healing. #BTS #BANGTAN7 #Borahae 💜

In terms of the ab shot of Jimin--he was told by managers that he had to do this. This was revealed in a video when all 7 got together and talked about how at 1st they all were supposed to do this. There is a video of a very early performance that showed this. At one point, a decision was made that Jimin only show his abs. They go on to say Jimin did not want to do this and asked RM to intercede but the managers did not agree. The guys then teased Jimin that once he realized ARMY liked it he really worked on his body. In later years, this became a problem with Jimin going on extreme diets and working out. He has talked about those days and how he evolved. Jimin still is likely to show a shoulder or abs.
@RandomJoey
@RandomJoey Год назад
Just wanna add on to your last sentence- Jimin still shows skin but now it’s because he wants to, not because of the managers ^-^ he’s learned to love himself, just like the rest of the members, and is more comfortable in his skin.
@Boraheartsss
@Boraheartsss Год назад
I would like to point out that the "extreme diets" was a rumor and we should stop feeding into that narrative. For some reason ARMY believed Jimin was bulimic. This is NOT TRUE but somehow it's still popular that this happened. IT was merely a rumor from overexaggerating ARMYs and we should not feed into that narrative. The way how open the boys are I have no doubt it would have come out in their music or lives by now. All the members go on diets, even Jungkook was on a diet during this time and said so during the video. Currently, V is on a diet. Jimin always worked out and on his body because he was a dancer and did martial arts. I am sure they wanted him to do it because he was the most fit, and recently (2022) they've been having Jungkook do it because he is the most fit. Jimin was just shy, that's all.

Jimin developed an eating disorder. He only ate every 13 days. Not kidding. They all still wrestle with an eating disorder. But they don't call it that. JK said on camera.. He doesn't eat during concerts. He only eats when the concert is over. You can hear them talking in vlives after a concert. I need to lose some weight ...as they eat after a concert which to them is like running a marathon. Sometimes they go workout after a concert. JK brought his boxing coach to the L.A. and Las Vegas concerts and would work out boxing after concerts. And then join the vlive. But still not eat!

I think you are misunderstanding what Tiger JK means when he says that Kpop hair and makeup are like the earlier era of rock and roll in America. It IS showmanship, but he is talking about people like Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, or Kiss, where the crazy hair and makeup were part of the persona. You might even say, part of the gimmick and not something you would see on anybody else but them. Something that set them apart from What regular people look like. They weren’t trying to make them look good, but to make them stand out and look different. And that correlates to BTS’ early look, but even more so if you watch videos like Big Bang’s Fantastic Baby, from the early 2000s.

6:47 Yeah, in Korea, a big star could never make an appearance without making sure their appearance is of quality. They want to avoid people criticizing their artists for being lazy or unprofessional. The way they look on stage is always about their concept or song-they always connect their look to their MV concept when they perform. The kpop industry is highly visual, its not just about the music, it’s about conveying a message visually and musically. I think that’s what makes kpop quite different. BTS also showed other kpop companies how important authenticity is for an artist. They gained such a fanbase because they showed us their personalities, personal hardships, and the hard work they put in. They made us, as fans, feel like we were their long-distance friends. Thanks for reacting!

(Writing as I watch, excuse the structure of this) “They make people feel seen.” Exactly!! I really think you hit the nail on the head w everything you said. Not only the lyrics (though that’s a HUGE part of it) but also the kind and respectful way they treated fans and people in general from the beginning. You pointed out V’s facial expression listening to that fan, for example. And even fans who can’t come to the meet&greets will watch the videos and hear them talk and laugh and appreciate all the fans and feel the genuine connection too. That’s not something you can fake. Yes, jk was definitely a kid here (age 15, you calculated right). He went to a special performing arts high school, so I imagine the staff were more understanding. It’s so cool to see 2013 Jimin gush about Taeyang, saying he was the inspiration for becoming a singer, and then they collabed on a song 10 years later. RM is a huge Nas fan, he definitely knows that song by heart haha. That’s really interesting about the talking parts before a song starts! It makes sense as a way of setting the mood, artistic licence, so to speak. Idk if you remember, but on Moonlight (first song off D-2) Suga said “I don’t know how many songs to put in” and later said he knew exactly what he was planning to do 😂 Chapters 1 and 2 only have deleted scenes, starting from chapter 3 there are deleted scenes and bonus content.

Explaining the "you must work yourself to the bone in order to get into a good school" mentality common to East Asia, but specifically Korea (as someone whose mother immigrated to America precisely to get away from this mentality), it comes down to a couple of factors: 1) neo-Confucianism and 2) Korea's lack of exportable resources. Neo-Confucianism became the state ideology of the Joseon dynasty in the late 14th century, and during that process, the government instituted a nation-wide civil exam. Theoretically, anyone could take this exam, and if they scored well, they would be granted a bureaucratic position, either in the palace or as a governor in a province. In practice, it was only the rich-who could afford schooling or bribe officials-who passed, but that idea of "study hard and succeed" is pretty much ingrained into the culture even today. Second, because Korea is so small, it doesn't actually have anything to export. Fishing, farming, logging are all domestic, and they can't compete against China when it comes to manufacturing. So what Koreans have come to believe since the 1990s is that they must export tech (Samsung), or culture (music, dramas, movies, etc.). Capitalism works a little bit differently in Korea, but most companies recruit SOLELY from the top universities in Korea, hence the pressure to get into one.

When BTS was created they started out with that target demographic, teens or youths, specifically in SK. Their global fame and wide ranging fan base surprised them and many other people. Maybe they knew that their lyrics would have a greater appeal but they weren't aiming for it. When you think about the Beatles who have generations of fans, that came with the decades, much like Seasame street gain new fans everytime a 5 year old tunes in for the first time, but BTS pulled that multi generation fanbase all at once. I might get stoned for this, but thats why I feel BTS have a greater impact than some of the older music icons, you can already see it with how some ARMYs share their love and care with the world. And their is a dance practice video of We Are Bulletproof pt 2, so go on and watch that hat trick move in its full glory.

As someone who was born and raised in South Sudan (Africa) I’ve noticed a lot of similarities between many Asian and African countries. African kids (especially ones who moved to the west) are often pressured to only go after certain parent approved careers. Those of us who rebel against the bs are often shunned. The school album series from Bangtan really resonated with me because I grew up in a very strict environment but I had no outlet or people who understood the pressures I was under. It’s one of the reasons I gravitate towards these amazing artists. Great reaction as always.

I used to mix up the same members as you. I got the rap line very quickly, then Jin, but it took me a long time to separate V, Jungkook and Jimin. About the school era lyrics. These albums lyrics, still to this day, can resonate with students in east Asian countries (China, Korean and Japan). The competitiveness, the pressure, the lost youth is still a thing in these countries. I live in Japan and it's no joke, kids here can't breathe, and most of them don't get to develop their own individual thinking, their own dreams. BTS message can sound simple to some of us, but it is a really important one in their home country context, for the kids living like this in east Asia, and probably in other countries too. After they get out of the school era their lyrics become more cut-throat. This time, generational issues, power abuse, media, government, socio-economic classes, they go all in with stories about the young adults trying to make ends meet.

Mr. Bang wanted them to speak and to inspire their age and generation. At that time...Mr. Bang's goal hit true. He had NO IDEA that BTS would appeal to all ages and inspire everyone. No group had ever done that! No one. So his goal was "correct" for that time and generation. The amazing phenomenon of BTS inspiring all ages, all races, all genders, all religions, all everyone blew everyone's mind! No one had any idea that would happen. So your point is well taken. But you need to realize that phenomenon had not happened yet. And they were just into inspiring their relatable youth! And yes that was V and yes Jimin was in the front. Very good! No group inspires such a range of humans. Oh...should I be the one to tell you ?????...it IS a hat TRICK!!! Yes. You got it right. 7 for 7. Finally.

In Indonesia we have cram schools too, but not everyone goes there. I didn't go to cram school myself, so after school I was free to hang out with friends or just relax at home. When I went to the States as an exchange student, I found school to be even more relaxed. We hardly had any homework and we had way fewer subjects. We only studied only seven to eight subjects per semester, while we had more than a dozen subjects in Indonesia. This was over 20 years ago so things might have changed but I think not that much. I don't have kids, so I only have passing knowledge of today's school.

8:20 - all acts that appear in music show are already signed to a label. The similarity to "X-factor" is that the shows are competitive (not the talent discovery part with ordinary people with talent). They have a winner on every episode, based on several criteria, including voting and sales. Like the girl said,the shows are a marketing tool for the groups when you have a new song or album. All K-pop acts appear on it, from rookies to established groups. BTS appeared on three shows when they released "Proof" last year. Given the stiff competition, rookie groups will try to avoid appearing on the same episode as an established group who is promoting a new album.

No. You didn't get it right. From left to right J-hope, RM, Jin, Jungkook, Jimin, Suga. V off camera. Why did they hide him? He didn't know. But Big Hit was afraid someone, another company might steal him. They were nearly bankrupt. And a better money offer might have enticed V to sign with someone else. But. Good guess. You'll get it...I told you It takes time. And like you said. Sometimes they look different. You couldn't tell that was V. Plus they were "babies". So very young!

7:40 I think you're not fully understanding that S. Korean music shows have a different purpose than what you're describing. The British narrator uses Top of The Pops + X Factor to make an analogy; in a U.S. context it's a difficult analogy to make, because we've lost half of that equation. X Factor (& shows like it), is ostensibly for discovering unrecognized and/or overlooked talent, whether in amateurs (Star Search, X Factor), in professionals who haven't had career success (The Voice), or both (American Idol). Top of The Pops is closer to Soul Train or American Bandstand; it's a show for signed artists to perform - usually in a hits-of-the-week format that relied on the weekly singles charts. It's a type of music show that was largely killed in the U.S. with the rise of music videos, because pre-MVs, television was the only way for millions of people to actually see popular artists perform, even if they were mostly miming. S. Korean music shows combine the competition aspect of talent discovery shows with the live performance aspect of chart shows. They also have completely separate talent discovery shows that are similar to X Factor & The Voice as well as formats that we borrowed from Asia, like The Masked Singer.

20:13 it's also a trait of developing countries, not only Asian culture. I am from Eastern Europe. It is ingrained in us that without hard work we will not be able to lead a decent life. Let alone succeed. Compared to the more developed countries we do not have many opportunities so the only way to get out of the trench is to work our way out of it. We cannot stumble upon success, or ease into it because we don't really have that around us. We must build the environment for it. When you think of poverty, what do you imagine? Can you imagine that it was common for me and many of my colleagues to eat once every 2 days in our first year of university? Otherwise we could not afford to live and to study in the city the university was in? Regardless of how it should be, the status quo was I knew that I need to do something to be able to change my status. Otherwise my circumstances would have not allowed me to lead a decent life. Education doesn't mean only doing well academically.. it means learning real skills and understanding the value of time dedicated to something. It means putting time and effort into either creating, or honing your skills that will allow you to create something that has value... 52:35 all of us would buy that. There would be fights and riots. :)) Realistically speaking I could go and spend up to 5k to buy limited edition stuff. What else am I gonna spend my money on? The fuck am I working my ass for if not to buy shit that I enjoy? :))

19:50 Remember that line from "Strange" you liked? "The system injects morphine called hope with dreams as collateral"... That's "hope-ture"... the system gives you hope taking your dreams away, promising that doing X, Y or Z you'll be fine. And to just bear with it "for a little while" (torture): studying till exhaustion, test after test, promising it's the last one until your desired job (which wasn't that one that you initially dreamed of) PS. Their debut song and album was crazy. TO put such message out there... Since Seo Taiji things had gotten pretty mild, and most songs being "I love you", "I hate you"; "you are mine", "I am yours", "call me, maybe" XD this was something something for an idol group.

hope torture: - it means to sell everyone this idea of the same false hope even if you know its not true to make people torture themselves --> as if you work hard/study hard enough you will acheive (eg. if you study hard you will go to harvard and have a good life, while that is obv not realistic).

4:49 idk much about this stuff but I will say that in Korea when signing to a label or even when in training hoping to debut. Yes they have “specialists” that teach them and everything is paid for but all the money they may they “use” during trainee you have to pay the company back what they “gave”. So some people don’t actually ever get to debut so they have tons of debut that they have to pay or they debut but don’t get paid for years because they are paying off that debt… 5:25 actually on this point this guy is talking about I agree and disagree. Yes they might have time to do those things but the Idol system is sooo fast paste but you also have to do sooo much that you often don’t get the “freetime” to be truly creative and/or be inspired. I mean most groups when new have to release like three small albums or a couple normal sized album in a year. Plus music videos, plus live performances, plus shows, etc (sometime even in a few months)…Suga (and maybe some other members) has said once in an interview how he thinks that the idol system can be very hard and/or too busy. 9:36 I also wanted to mention here that when he said this it kind of fine it a little important, at least to me. Yes they will be nervous that is fine but the company isn’t totally pressuring them to a certain way or putting as much pressure on them as other groups. However I do think RM and Suga knew the stakes more than the other and maybe a little more passionate in that this was their chance. (Yes the other members did think this but idk maybe this is just me). You can see at the beginning Suga and RM, especially RM really pushed them as much as he could at the beginning 19:47 what “hope-ture” means to me. I kind of will relate it to Jhope’s JITB album and you can relate it to a line in their song, I think, Respect (you did react to it and the line was something about Hope being morphine or drug ). Hope gives people a way or motivation to push through, but during the process it feels like torture. Now relating this what the song and Asian culture. Their society, school, parents, etc pressure their kids to be the best in school to get a govt job like a doctor or desk job that is “Secure”, but the schooling is hard and almost work the kids to the bone in school, it can feels like torture sometimes during the process but you keep going because you have hope. Hopefully this makes sense.

Vs face changed the most as he grew. All of BTS got their BA the Rap line plus Jimin got MAs. I believe they got MAs in various areas of Business Management and Marketing. I think that shows parents that education still can be secured. I wonder how many kids were able to point out BTS to parents to get them to agree to let them audition. Jimin would not need encouragement to show off his 6 pack. The running across their backs and hat trick were all Jimins ideas. He is a natural showman and performer. He was showing off his 6 pack to his dance teacher in dance classes way before this. Jimin likes praise for his hard work. Or as RM once said Jimin needs alot of love and attention. This was a set up the manager was setting JK up for his birthday surprise.

@christineenright7491 Год назад
Oh yeah, are you aware that Korean have a system for determining age that is different from the West? On the day they are born they are 1 and the following January they are 2. So V who was born on Dec 31st turned 2 the next day on January 1st. I believe that Korea is officially moving to International Age sometime this year. Recently, RM talks about turning 30 this year but he was born in September 1994. So in International age he is only 28 and will not turn 30 until September 2024. They were all young when they signed. According to International age, Jin, the eldest signed when he was 18 and JK, the youngest was 13. The others were all around 16 or 17th. No one was 20 when the debuted. So while the debuted in 2013, they have been together longer. They really did not experience adult life prior to being BTS. That is why the absolutely needed to close Chapter 1 of their history as a group and begin Chapter 2. They all say they are still BTS and will perform as a group. In my opinion, in the future, I do expect them to perform as a group but not exclusively as a group. Also, theu truly will not be a "boy band. They will bring their new experiences as solo artists and as soldiers, plus they will all be close to 30 or in their early 30s. We should not want or expect them to be unchanged.

30:00 I 100% agree with you but also know (or I think I do) where Bang PD is coming from about the age range: inspiring this younger people is and was an important thing, as SK has the highest percentage of teenage suicide for the reasons Bangtan talks in their music. Of course, at first they could only see where they were and where they've been, and didn't realize that they could reach to older generations as well, since these had been where they were then. And as you said, older generations (not old people, I mean people in their 30s vs people in their teens) they are never asked "what do you want to do in life?" "is what you do your dream work?" but later, Bang PD and the guys realized that their reach was that ample.
