Their Just Sing video features several of their former band members as well as collaborators. Some of them from as far back as when they first started in these late 90's and were known as 4:2:five. Be sure to turnthe captions on, if you watch that video. They will tell you who everyone is. You may recognize some of the singers . ;)
By the way, You said Geoff and Eli are your favorites. You should watch their "Love Yourself" video! It's part of their Partwork series. It's only Geoff and Eli singing together. Geoff does the bass line AND the beatboxing and Eli sings lead and all of the harmonies. It's really good, but hardly ever covered by reactors. Geoff also does the beatboxing in their Death of a Bachelor that's only him and Earl. Layne does the beatboxing and bass line in Everywhere You Look, which is only himand Earl. They're all so talented!
My mom couldn't talk on the phone without using her hands. I used to tease her about it. Geoff's the same. J None's on a 5 yr sting with almost 3 yrs done and now that he's in Wash DC instead of Seattle, he gets back to Orlando more often. Always good to see. DJ's was on the Hamilton tour last yr and in the Orlando area so he was in their Christmas song - The Chipmunk Song a little over a yr ago. On J None's last video - Man in the Mirror (Michael Jackson) before the US Navy got him, DJ was a guest vocalist for that.
You know, while it's true that Geoff absolutely sings with his hands, have you ever watched Layne while he's beatboxing? Even when he's not using them to actually create sounds, his hands do *not* remain still.
4:35 That effect you're noticing is where they took this song that's in a minor key, and for J.None's solo put it into a major key. Notice also how Geoff announces this change, before the solo with "Majorize!" and then after it with, "Bring it back." And that's not in the original AJR video, that's all VoicePlay's arranging. These guys are musical geniuses!
Deejay is an old friend of a few of the guys. They all were performers at the theme parks down there in Florida for years. Right now Deejay is an alternate for one of the troupes traveling Hamilton. I was disappointed his troupe isn’t coming to my town but the group has a native Tarheel in it.
I was told about an old one where he has his hands in his pockets. and yes, proof that he can still sing. But it does look wrong :) It's called Stay With Me.
Trying to find another 'no hands' from Geoff, I thought of "Still Alive". I was only half right, but still worth watching. This was Deejay's first collab with VP. He was backup for 3 main characters in Hamilton b4 shutdown. I have a feeling he will go back there, but it would be nice if he joined VP. Fun. hasn't been playing for several years. Hiatus? Maybe, who knows! I still listen to "We Are Young" and "Some Nights". AJR is still going strong. It's 3 bros, Adam, Jack and Ryan. They released another album not too long ago. One of my favs from them is silly song Bummerland: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7Kuwwta_Mms.html (for you, Mr-I-Want-A-Link, lol!). Digressing here, as usual! Back to VP. They did another awesome job here! I'm surprised you didn't mention the Eli-Deejay-JNone run @ 5:54. I love them all!
Geoff was raised in the south. A real southerner can’t really talk or sing properly without using their hands😂 of course the more emotion or expression he puts into his singing the more his hands are going to move😊
We loved this video and are also Voiceplay stans (literally how we started our band haha) ! We're an all guy a cappella group, we'd love to know what you think of either of our music videos!!
