He’s actually talking about rappers who glorify being depressed and suicidal to promote pills and drugs, NF has always been anti-drugs, and Nate never tried to glorify the idea of suicide, he even had a line saying “suicide thoughts come and go like a guest to me, but I DON’T WANNA DIE, I just wanna get relief”
@sylar69691 I have to ask, even as a random. Do you really preach this cuz you believe it, or are you a troll? Honest question from someone who wonders why some people feel this weird entitlement that they have to be right, as if they themselves know what's really out there
@Tristan Smith grow up and stop repeating the same crap everyone who doesn’t listen to NF nor cares about his stuff say. Keep proving my point why don’t ya.
@Tristan Smith this isn‘t about being forgettable in the first place it‘s about him not romanticizing mental ilnesses it‘s the way he copes with his struggles and literally saves lives besides he‘s not overrated at all I barely klow people who know him anyway unless I mention let you down
NF - “even therapists say I need medication, I avoid it tho because I’m scared to take it” he doesn’t glorify drugs or suicide, I’m sure lots of people already said this 😂
It would actually be cool to see Tom and Nf work on something together. Both are real, humble, very talented and care about their fans, but I know Tom has stated before that he's not much into doing collabs. Not at this present time anyways
Tom mentioned he heard a .... pop ish song on the radio about mental health and checked the writers out.... 16 different writers.... hard to believe the singer is actually writing from their own experiences
@@KnoxHill he does live streams with his fans on Facebook... he talks about meanings and his life and inspirations and takes questions. they are all still on his fb ... probably the first one after sad rappers was released... I can remember a song but it was a big singer... like award level and radio play ... it was a top 40 and he pointed out the difference between someone writing about their own experiences and someone singing a song written to ... connect (whether or not just for a cash grab I dont know) with people on a topic and needing 16 writers... I just thought it was an incredibly interesting topic. I have definitely noticed an upward trend in songs and celebs talking about mental health as a regular topic when they never did before....
@@KnoxHill it was Shawn mendez... talking about suicide a d depression and there were 16 writers credited....he talked about it in his last live stream again
Tom is one of my favorites for a reason. He is just REAL. He speaks his mind with no apologies and in a way that will actually make people feel it. He's awesome.
do you not think that sometimes he generalizes too much? real people are complex, and if youre talking about a group of people you cant expect something to be true for all of them.
@@fenyx6573 fist of, sorry i didn't check to see how long ago this was posted. But in this particular song i almost feel like he is calling out every single person that ever sang about mental health and saying that they are all fake and doing it to get attention, and he is one of the only ones, if not the only one that doesnt. I dont think that is true. I do think there can be people like that, that sing about mental struggles that they dont deal with themselves, but that doesnt mean you can call everyone fake, and say that everyone that ever sang about this is "praying on people that are depressed", it could be that they are just working through something themselves by using music (that is totally the vibe i get with NF). You mentioned he speaks his mind with no apologies, and though that does take courage, i think it would be better to have some more room for nuance. Not every musician is the same and its hard to say wath s going on in someones life if all you see of it are a few songs they upload. (please do not take this as an attack towards you or this song, i just feel like its a little.... dangerous maybe to speak abot other peoples lives and judge them in a rather unnuanced way
@@imnameless3624 That's a fair response. I respect that. No attack felt at all. I wasn't expecting a proper reply to be honest. I can't say I disagree with much of what you said. I feel like we may differ on the issue of nuance and the application and acknowledgment of it. I don't expect any artist to put disclaimers in their songs in regards to whom they are and are not talking about, especially on a subject meant to be prickly. That's up for the people to interpret. I understand where you are coming from, regardless.
Do more Tom. He's an amazing artist and he's one of the only musicians who speaks the truth about everything. He's seriously became my favorite rapper over the last couple months. Check out all of his music, its all great. His girlfriend Nova Rockefeller shoots all his vids and she's also a rapper / musician. They do everything by themselves without any record companies.
That’s what I love to hear man - I will always support independent music and artists. Thanks for that insight and those recommendations. 100% plan on doing more of his songs 🙌
Really enjoyed the reaction. Got a new sub out of it. Please more Tom. His girl Nova does all the video directing, filming, and editing. She is a rapper in her own right. You mentioned the hate and he does get a lot of that. Check 'This House' as a response to the haters.
Matter of fact you should react to like a dozen different music videos from Tom MacDonald because even if you don't end up being a fan of this man, you'll still get a lot out of his lyrics. He's a real artist. I know this will take a lot of time for you to do, but do it at your own pace. Worth it 100%. The list of good tracks from him goes on and on. Exposure This House Dear Rappers The Way I Am (Eminem Remix) I Wish Castles Buttholes Everybody Hates Me {Whiteboy Straight White Male If I Was Black} these three in the bracket are a trilogy There's more but this is long enough of a list for now :P
@@riemertenbrink2278 well you need to listen to a few other tracks before you understand just what "I'm sorry" really means. You could listen to it standalone but it's way better if you know what kind of music Tom makes first ;D
#Hogfam4life! Great reaction! Tom saved my life. I'm not in the emotional prison any longer. He knew my pain, he rapped about it, he lived it, and he climbed out of it. Then he threw me a rope.
Tom suffers some of the same as what symptoms NF has from depression and anxiety, he is going after everyone that fake depression, anxiety, and other disorders just to get pills.. least from what I've herd and read up on.
Bruh hes not talking about the Suicide Boys either they both have for real mental problems they almost killed themselves and they are cousins. They gave life one more chance and promised and swore to each other if they didn't make it in the rap game, then they would kill themselves. Dont get wrong I dont care for them except for like 2 or 3 songs and dont like thes message they promote at all in 95% of their music. All that devil worshipping bullshit and the rest of the bullshit. They do have a couple good songs where they are not talking about bullshit. He is talking about all these fake ass fuck niggas, fake emo, fake depressed, pill and drug pushing, mumble rapper losers.
Here because I saw you reacted to Tom Macdonald. Great reaction! You pointed out a few things I didn't notice. I would love to see more reactions to his music from you. Subscribed. :)
@@KnoxHill I watched on interview with Tom Macdonald and he talked about how the creation and releases of his songs were relevant to the time or his other music. I'm sure there are a lot of suggestions you are looking at as to how to tackle his catalog, but I kind of like the idea of going back to where he feels it all started and going by release date from there. Based on his video list (if you skip the "Spoken Word tracks" and a couple of misc others... all very good, btw), it would be: Dear Rappers Castles Helluvit White Boy This House (White Boy Response) Exposure The Way I Am (Eminem Remix) Politically Incorrect Everybody Hates Me I Wish Straight White Male (which triggered the beef between him and Mac Lethal, bringing in the diss tracks from each) If I Was Black Buttholes I'm Sorry Ashes (A new video is supposed to drop Friday) I'm sure whatever you choose will be fine, though. He has some really great, thought-provoking music.
Knox Long time viewer of both you and Tom didnt realize this was your first Tom video and your breakdowns have only gotten better and this one was already in the higher tiers. Keep being awesome and real.
It’s a testament to Knox’s unparalleled skill as a rapper, musician and a reactor that this is my 5th rewatch of him going down the Tom Macdonald rabbit hole and is because each time feels like the first; I can learn new aspects of production and the process of music writing and skills from both the item being reacted to and from Knox’s knowledge itself. Knox, you’re definitely the GOAT of breakdown reactors in my book. Keep up the great work. Much love from a fan in Florida.
I will be honest, I have not watched all of your Tom reactions. I am happy to find that this is your first reaction. I am excited to view. Your awesome.
Mental illness is a very serious issue. I am a manic depressive, my father is a manic depressive, and my grandfather was a manic depressive that killed him self. I went into the US Navy as a manic depressive and came out as a partially disabled combat veteran. I was diagnosed with ptsd, on top of being a manic depressive. I’ve excepted the fact that my mental illness will be with me for the rest of my life. I took more lives than I ever want to mention in the defense of my country. But, I live with those ghosts and that nightmare everyday. I’ve made peace with it. Thank you Tom for standing up for us.
Yo, not a comment on this video on this first note, but I thoroughly enjoy how you describe music. Music runs in your blood, fam. I can tell, because it does in mine as well. Ever since 96 when I was in my boy's trailer, burning my first CD, and passing it around school. Since then, music is life and in constantly writing and trying to expand my vocab to never stay repeating. You have an awesome talent, my dude. Much respect you're not just using this platform for fame or money. That would just be an extra perk. You have passion and I like how you describe bars. You get it. On this one, as I know you already know because this is an older video. But Tom and NF are a lot alike in the mental illness game. They actually have it. I know you know it by now but I love that type of real music you don't get from mainstream any more. They talk about nothing most the time, where for guys like Tom, NF, You, Crypt, and more. You guys take the listeners mind on a journey that plays out in your mind. You can actually feel it. Sorry for the long comment but I've been rapping non stop since 96, then around 04-05 started playing guitar then got into drums and piano and making beats, so I know music and love music. Real music that is, and you guys are the last of a dying breed. Maybe RU-vid will be the new "mainstream" One day. Keep killing it fam. Much love
His girlfriend does all of his videos for him. Her name is Nova Rockafella. My wife and I saw them both in concert and it was awesome. Keep up the good work on the reactions man.
@@KnoxHill definitely, I've been listening to his songs all day haha. Did you actually create "creatures lie here" back in the day because it's a dope song i remember growing up to that song haha (im 23)
1:34 This was me about 10 days ago LMAO My words exactly. Best rapper ever was my first Tom video. Blew me away. Amazin shit man. Your reactions are great bruhhh, Im in 2019 LOL :)
NF never promoted drugs or suicide. He talks about his past, what he did to make it change. He even has a line “suicidal toughts come and go theyre like a guest to me, I DONT WONNA DIE i just want relief.NF is one of the realest ones and raps with anger and emotion, what makes it feel like depressed rap while in fact.He spits good bars about his past.He spits his anger out.But he would never ever promote suicide or drugs.
When you know that you’re prone to idolize and be extremely bias towards certain artists just like everyone else, it helps you to keep your brain and constantly try to take yourself out of that mindset to objectively look at skill and delivery. Be aware that we’re all like this. I see this quality of awareness in this dude after just a few vids.
Im just now 👀 ur reaction & U NAILED IT -- he WAS A WRESTLER!! So insightful my dude!! You gotta dig DEEPER into Tom's catalog ! 💕 👀 u react to Tom!! U right mental health is NOT 2 BE messed with. I lost my brother to suicide in 05 then in 2010 found my bf dead on my floor from OD on oxys.. Took 180 of them !! Sick of that ahitt #hangovergang
Time to update the comments. Lol. First time I ever saw this Knox Hill Reaction. Wow first of all. Knox is just that good. Wrestler mixed with a Rapper. Well I guess Knox is right on there. And he was impressed by Tom from the start. Knox has also gotten so much more refined with his break downs. His camera presence wasn’t as good as it is now. Maybe he learned some of his camera presence from Tom who is either natural at it. Or he’s got good presence but Nova is such a Boss at the Camera and Editing that it can come out so good. Hindsight The GOAT of The Reaction Community does first reaction of The GOAT of Independent Artist Tom Macdonald. Cool!
Once again you have a great insight to explain this form of art. Great content. Great artist and by the way....your art is dope as well. Please check out one of his latest songs titled IM SORRY and another from his previous album titled THIS HOUSE. Both of these songs are lit.
I think the song is clever and the point is to get people talking about glorifying depression - not to come down hard on anyone in particular. As for NF... He is akin to The Joker versus depression. He is a self-saboteur and disseminates chaos in his own brain. He speaks so candidly about his struggle that it's obvious (to this anxious soul) he's not manufacturing his mental health. But could it appear this way? 100%. NF makes depression look like a really good Batman movie. Those black balloons, black hoodies, and black smiley faces are so perfectly anarchist. And "Leave Me Alone" is shot in a run down amusement park. I think his videos are pretty damn incredible because they're as bleak as he feels. They're also commentary on how people around him behave. (It's obvious that the people changing in and out of black and white outfits in "Leave Me Alone" were symbolic of people pretending to be happy when they all had burdens of their own.) But, at the end of the day, do I think Nate is glorifying his depression? No. We might think The Joker is an interesting character but most of us also understand his mind is wack. Nate knows he's messed up inside and he so clearly doesn't want to be. A lot of his pain is self-inflicted and existential because he's disappointed in himself for not being able to control his inner child. He's telling you over and over and over again that he hates who he is, that he does things he cannot rationally explain, and that all he wishes is that he could be the person the people he loves need him to be. Glory isn't taking losses. And no matter how incredible NFs videos are, at the end of the day, he'll hate it and feel like he lost. That isn't something to celebrate. We commiserate. We say, this is fucked up and I don't know how we arrived at the same destination together. Let's get the fuck out of here.
I have a serious mental illness that I will always need to be medicated for and unless I tell someone I have it, 98% of the people I come into contact with will never know I have it. These artists could very well struggle with mental illness and he's telling them they can't use music ad their outlet. Things lined this are how people end up withdrawing and some end up taking their lives. Music is a huge relief for me and I appreciate artists that make songs I can relate to.
Sorry to hear that, but thanks for sharing and commenting. You’re right, we don’t always know what’s going on in someone’s mind and like I said in the Reaction it’s definitely hard to prove if someone is lying or not as it’s all one’s mind. Appreciate the comments and thought 🙌
It seems you've never reacted to "Dear Rappers" which was the first song of Tom's that went viral and got his career off the ground. Would be a good one to react to sometime.
You gained a new sub. Some songs of tom's you may want to check out is I wish, Hang On, Politically Incorrect, exposure, This house.... Just listen to them all. lol I wish is one of my favs of his. Great reviews keep them coming and all the best to you. :)
Johnny...sorry I couldn't help it...Just wanted to say that I love your reactions. You are very insightful, peeling the layers of the onion, You look much deeper then just about everyone else that's reacting I have started listening to some of your music..Nice!
The pills in the bathtub scene with him laid back in it is from a Macklemore video. Drug Dealers I think was the name of it. "My drug dealer was a doctor.. doctor... I got the plug from big Pharma.. Pharma..."
Tom was a wrestler, his girlfriend Nova Rockafeller shot every video (except 'Ashes' which she still directed). Nova also is a rap artist and they also have a rock-n-roll band GFBF (girlfriend boyfriend). Welcome to Tom's rabbit hole aka #hangovergang
Interesting. I didn’t realise he had actually been a wrestler lol. And dope that he does keep all his vids independent. I’m looking forward to doing more reactions to his music 🙌
See I don't see that as a restriction though. His vocabulary becomes more extensive when he doesn't need filler. Em has speed but most of his bars are filled with no meaning. I love him. Especially old school em, but Nate has made it clear that em is an idol to him. And I don't think he actually dissed em, he paid homage to some of his bars. "Will Smith dont gotta cuss on his raps to sell records, well I do, so fuck him and fuck you too." "Who you know putting out clean tracks, but they nasty? " He doesn't diss. He just let's you know he's not gonna be like everyone else
@Taylor Littleton Still, Its far fetched. NF is the type of person that will directly call out someone by their name(as far as ive seen). He doesent try to hide it at all. Even then there is still the fact NF is inspired by him, I dont think he would be one to immediately change sides and diss him.
Michael Wallace as Tom said on cloned rappers, Eminem ain't rapped since encore. Why else would he be virtue signalling to all the people who used to try to get him banned?
actually Tom is a lyrical genius...listen to all his other songs...he can sing as well as he can rap, plus he goes everywhere w/ his raps....he is all over the place..satire, heavy, emotional, he can change up his music and rap like nobody I have ever seen in the same exact song, and the way he raps he can go from slow to the fast like nothing, and the flow is just unbelievable...that is what makes him unique..and of course he is independent, so he says what he wants and what he feels, and he doesn't care what people think...which is hard to come by these days...his songs always have a message, it's not just spewing shit, like most do!
@Knox Hill really good reaction bro. You got a new sub from me. It's funny that you said he's like a wrestler mixed with a rapper. Tom used to be a pro wrestler. But definitely do more of his songs. They are all brilliant and he keeps it 💯 real.
I got totally triggered by that headline, I was metaphorically rolling up my sleeves, getting ready to cancel Tom. 😆 Well crafted click bait there, Knox. 😂
He's not talking about artist using the platform to express themselves like NF..... …. ... hes talking about artists who put a facade up so their audience can "connect" better. Why would he bash anyone expressing themselves while he's doing exactly that with his platform.... By the way its his girlfriend Nova doing the video productions, shes also an artist.
Okay NF is actually diagnosed with OCD and depression so what this dude talking about also he has never encouraged people or has he ever taken drugs and nf is not a mumble rapper
I think he's talking about all the lame rappers out there who see people finally coming up like nf who for yrs and yrs have rapped about his feelings and issues, and those lame rappers have just grabbed on to what they think will sell records and mental health is a big deal. I don't think it's about nf though.
He used to wrestle btw. His 2nd diss track about Mac is also fire. First one...not so much. We just pretend it never came out. Mac also made a good diss as well. Can make a little series reacting to them, might have some fun doing it. Keep the good work up brah.
Love that u pat ur pacman ghost was cute. Colicchie is an artist who talks about drug abuse n being sober check him out if u get time. Tom's a favorite always blasting issues, stereotypes n stigmas n using his art to blast in positive way, love it. I'm happy u did this hope u do more of Tom's music. More people need to check u out, been putting ur name out there. Ur 1 favorites. Freestyle Friday? Colicchie n Vin Jay please check em. I'd die to hear u, NF n Vin Jay do a song my God it'll melt faces. Thanks hun God bless XoJaynaoX I'm not crazy my reality is just different than yours. -Chesire Cat
Appreciate that perspective. There’s a lot of Toms songs I don’t like myself - but he is definitely effective in getting a conversation started and making people think
@@KnoxHill facts. There's a few of his songs that I could care less about, but this one was one of the more "real" topics for me and very interesting perspective. Definitely got me thinking today!
This song wouldn't be an attack on NF. NF actually suffers from depression. He has said himself that he makes his music as therapy for himself. If you like it, that's cool. If you don't, that's cool too because he didn't make his songs for you.
