What else can they do? Stranded in the ruins of the inner cities because that’s all they know, they don’t have the social or economic capital to just move out or become a whole different person, they’ve been exposed from a young age to the harsh realities of capitalism and institutionalized racism that forces these people to have to fend for themselves in these inner cities, selling illegal goods to put food on the table and a roof over their heads because you know minimum wage isn’t making them shit, forming cliques with close friends and neighbors as selling drugs leads to the creation of territories, which leads to the overpolicing of their community and the cops turn on the people they’re meant to protect, All of a sudden someone in the streets gets killed for some dumb reason and the retaliation hits last for years, it’s exactly like what happened all throughout the 1900s with the Italian/Irish mobs or any other kind of gang made up of poor uneducated minority city kids, they didn’t have any other choice and needed to make money to survive, but nobody says it’s sad that Italian mobsters threw their lives away murdering eachother for decades, we just think that’s cool and makes for classic films. But for black folks it’s different and everyone makes it seem like they’re just “throwing their lives away” for no reason. Well there is a very obvious reason and it’s one that we could fix if we stopped blaming these kids for an environment that they were forced to exist in for years with the only possible escape being music or sports.
