According to Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, the lead guitarist, and lead vocalist on this song, he wrote it after getting a diagnosis of an irregular heartbeat. That had him thinking about his mortality and that he may have a shortened life. "I thought I was going to maybe not live that long", he said in an interview. He described it as "a love song where the love transcends the actual physical existence of the partners". It advocates courage in the face of death, but in no way suggests we should actively bring it about. It expressed his wish that should he die early, that he would be able to be with his loved ones again in the afterlife." - Songfacts

^ This. This song is sometimes "accused" of promoting suicide, but it is not. It is about accepting the inevitable when our time comes. Next by BOC should be "Godzilla," followed by "Cities on Flame,"

You don't remember the solo part because its edited out of the radio version. So glad you choose the album version. This song is genius. The soft soothing vocals delivering very dark lyrics about suicide. The three albums before this is much more heavy! I like these albums more. Their first big single Elizabeth is soooo Blue Oyster Cult.

If there's such a thing as a rock 'n' roll lullaby, that's this song. I love it so much. It just completely transports you to its world. According to the band, the vague suicide theme was unintentional. It's about not being afraid to live or love. It can be scary, but it's a leap of faith. You can't be so afraid of death that you never live at all.

James Hetfield from Metallica talked about BOC in an interview some years ago. He mentioned that BOC played the biggest venues in the country in the late 70's / early 80's, but now they play smaller venues and large clubs. James wondered how a band can make that change from large venues to small venues. But then he said that he caught a recent BOC show and understood why: They love what they are doing. They love playing live in front of a crowd. The rock music industry is like professional baseball. Many people play in the minors, but only the lucky few get called up to the "big show". Everybody hopes to get that call, but if you decide that you will not be happy unless you get the call, there is a huge probability that you will be a very sad individual. A better existence is to work hard and hope to make it big, but be happy to get what you do get and just keep playing the game as long as the game wants you.

Don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but this song was used to eerie effect in John Carpenter's movie 'Halloween'. The original one in the late 70's, not the modern remakes. I believe it was considered the first ever slasher horror to be made. It is a classic for a lot of reasons. If you haven't seen it, it is worth seeing. Hearing it in the movie, turned me on to this band!

Both riffs, the main and the secondary, subtle yet SO evocative. Driving, moody. And the voice fits perfectly. One of my all-time faves. Reminds me of my AM transistor radio I used to put under my pillow and fall asleep to when I was 5.

You'll be extremely happy with anything from the first 3 albums and their 1st live album. They changed their style a bit after those and although their music is still entertaining even today as they are still producing music. Their first 3 albums are outstanding. So please don't stop here and dig deeper with them.

You may have heard their song Godzilla. "Seasons don't fear the Reaper Nor the wind or the sun or the rain" Death is just a natural part of life.

I think it is a criminal act that record labels edit this masterpiece (and others) so they can stick it on a "top 100 rock songs" album, proving that they do not care about the music, only about the amount of sales.

You didn't remember the guitar solo because, for some ungodly reason, there is a radio edit that omits it. I nearly lose my mind when I hear it on the radio butchered. Great review!

BOC were as big as any band back in the late 70s and early 80s. Most are familiar with their hits...like Don't Fear The Reaper and Burnin' For You. They will surprise you with their versatility as no two of their songs sound alike. They were Columbia Records answer to Black Sabbath back in the day. A thinking man's hard rock band. They are still touring today and recently put out their first album in 20 years (The Symbol Remains) and it kicks the preverbal ass!! React to: Godzilla, Astronomy, Cities on Flame, Joan Crawford, Black Blade, Veteran of the Psychic Wars (live version). It is a very deep rabbit hole!!

"Cities On Flame" and "Then Came The Last Days Of May" from On Your Feet Or On Your Knees "Unknown Tongue" from Fire Of Unknown Origin "Career Of Evil" from Secret Treaties "7 Screaming Diz Busters" and "The Red And The Black" from Tyranny And Mutation "Astronomy" and "Kick Out The Jams" from Some Enchanted Evening. Those will get you started. If you do "The Red And The Black",note the similarities to Metallica's "Hit The Lights".

The reaper comes for us all eventually. Death is a part of life so, why fear it. Dying isn't a matter of "if" but rather "when". Romeo and Juliette would rather be together in death than be forced to live apart. Truly a tragic romance for the ages.
