this has been my favorite Disturbed song since it came out. it was partly inspired by the death of david draiman’s grandfather. he was raised in an Orthodox Jewish home, and had trained to be a Synagogue Cantor (the person who sings the service’s songs of prayer) for almost 20 years and was close to being ordained as a Rabbi when he joined Disturbed. when David quit his job as a healthcare administrator (dude is wicked smart and triple majored in business, political science, and philosophy in college earning bachelor’s degrees in all 3 in the same amount of time most people earn 1… but i digress) to be in Disturbed full-time his grandfather disowned him. When he found out his grandfather was dying there was no time to get to Israel to say his piece/say goodbye the way he wanted to. this song is both a conversation between David and G-d, basically saying “come at me bro” and a message to his grandfather that he didn’t abandon his faith by doing music full time, he just found a new way to practice it (“let me enlighten you, this is the way i pray”). as a Cantor he quite literally used songs as prayers and as a vocalist needing to speak to G-d and his now-deceased grandfather he used this song to do the same thing. i have a tattoo of a staff from this sheet music that wraps around and down my forearm. it’s the vocal melody that corresponds to the lyric “let me enlighten you, this is the way i pray” because music is also my chosen form of prayer. sorry for the long-winded comment… but yeah… it’s hard to properly express my thoughts after coming off an overnight double shift as a nurse 😬
Holy crap! That was a long and most enjoyable read! I LOVE your tattoo without needing to see it. Since you’re a nurse, hopefully you’ll understand what I’m going to say. Fair warning… I betcha it’s gonna be way longer than your read! Lol First of all I’m very similar to you. Not a nurse, but was a medic and worked in a hospital for 12 years on the hospitals trauma team. Went to university and studied my degree in biology/zoology. Gave up people and switched to animals. 😉 I did animal rescue release. Taught biology zoology classes to young children over the summer. I also worked for wildlife and parks. Here’s where I’ll skip over a bunch of stuff and go straight to. I was born with a rare, genetic disease called Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Protein deficiency disease I was not a carrier, I had it full-blown. I had 2 very ugly… Very dangerous mutated alleles. IDK if you know what A1ATD is because it’s extremely rare (I am the only person w A1 in my state and the surrounding states)but it’s systematically shuts down and destroys every organ that sloughs off and has to replace cells. So obviously, lungs & liver are going to go first. For me, it was my uterus. Then I got premature COPD in my early 30s. Then I developed cirrhosis. I’m not sure where you work in the hospital, but everything that could go wrong did go wrong when my liver went to crap. Hepatic Encephalopathy, two years with an ammonia elevation so high I have dementia. Esophageal varices, Constant comas. Ascites so badly. It tore my abdominal muscles and gave me an umbilical hernia overnight. I LITERALLY developed a 3rd kidney on my right side. I guess my disease thought I might need a little extra. Which I do because my kidneys are shot from all the diuretics. I also have pancreatitis. In 2017, I was kicked off the transplant list for good with a meld score of 39… 40 meaning dead. I was given 3 to 6 months to live. Leave on Palliative care, Call us when you’re ready for hospice. Obviously this is because I was and still am, in end stage liver failure…. permanently I guess?? NOBODY in the hx of End stage cirrhosis lives that long. Literally the doctors and specialist and researchers can find nobody. Mind you this is not a praise God that I am alive. I am not well. I am not cured. I am still actively dying. And the longer i live with cirrhosis, the more horrible conditions I develop as a result of it. OK, Now, that being sad, I used to be really apathetic regarding God. I literally had to go sit in the forest and observe all the beauty in nature, or I feared I’d become a complete atheist. I found God in nature & in all that inhabited it. HERE is where, Finally, Disturbed comes in. All my life I’ve had a LOW voice. I didn’t care enough about it to investigate just how low it was. Always been told my voice is abrasive. That it can be heard all the way down the block. basically, they were telling me I need to learn to speak more sweetly… More softly. So having all the time in the world on my hands due to dying I said why not? Might as well train myself to sing like a songbird. One day, I was on RU-vid searching, vocal instructors,I needed to learn to speak more soothingly, softly. Only how to growl, scream and sing in death metal popped up first as I search for vocal lessons. I don’t have to tell you what happened next, but singing softly went out the window immediately. I Found out I sang in Basso Profundo. I quickly figured out David Draiman and I have VERY similar voices. Mines a little lower OK it’s a lot lower than his, especially when I talk. David’s voice is brighter. He has a lovely tamber. I drone. HOWEVER , I can raise it to sing along with him. It’s absolutely beautiful and it’s fun. It wasn’t until I started putting every lyric to every song to memory that I begin to talk to God through music as well. I absolutely love “PRAYER.” it has meant many things at many different times to me. I too, have begun to use music as a way to speak to God. Death metal to be precise. I’m certain God would prefer I use something a little more ethereal, but for now he’s got a German girl who growls beautiful music! Dammit, I love David Draiman. he has a beautiful mind a beautiful soul and a beautiful voice. What a beautiful inspiration to have.
Disturbed is 1 of those bands with their sound that you know it’s them typically from a same continuous style- some may say “it just sounds like another Disturbed album”, well that’s kinda why they’re so good. They’re for sure 1 of the best sounding bands live no matter the venue. They’re excellent musicians
David Draiman’s voice is amazing. This album, Believe, is my favorite Disturbed album. To me, it’s their most technical, musically creative & vulnerable project. Every song is 🔥
Nu Metal as a term was coined first, and was used for bands like KoRn, and Rap Metal was definitely used for distinguish bands who were more obvious with their rap influence. It helps to distinguish bands like Limp Bizkit and Gryp, from other bands like Slipknot who obviously swing heavier on the metal side of the pendulum.
The way I have always viewed this song is a man who is speaking back and forth to god, and/or mocking him, by saying things like "Another dream that will never come true just to compliment your sorrow, another life that I've taken from you." So the man has become so fed up with it that he begins to welcome the pain and suffering, i.e. "Living just isn't hard enough, burn me alive inside." This song always get me pumped up and feeling unstoppable, it always makes the bad things in life seem less significant. Thanks for reacting to my request guys.
For me it's always been ironical. "Living just isn't hard enough.....take everything away." Reminds me as long as i have things that haven't been taken then life really isn't that hard. I listened to this a lot when my husband died.
7:03 I have no idea what shape that is on the album cover, but I would always be mesmerized by it every time I listened to this back in high school. Disturbed always has cool album covers, I would say 10,000 Fists is my favorite Disturbed album cover, followed by the one for Indestructible.
Hey guys, about time you guys reacted to more disturbed 🤘🤘 one of my favorites,I've been a fan of disturbed since I heard this.Soooo many awesome songs to choose from, you can't go wrong 🎶🤘🎶🤘 A reason to fight & hold on to memories are completely different to this & sound of silence, David draiman is one of the best, can sing anything 🤘🤘
The emblem is a combination of symbols from various faiths. One of my favorite covers by Disturbed other than "Sound of Silence" is "Land of Confusion" originally done by the band Genesis
It has already been said in a comment, but the symbol is a combination of each members. Faith, this song is about losing faith and also, I believe it speaks heavily to how people constantly have to balance faith in their lives.
They have a song called Voices that I have always loved jamming out to. There is a 8 second or so just straight up guitar jam solo. You have to hear it to know and when you hear that part you will know it is that part.
I never payed attention to the lyrics in full. This was great. Brought me back to the best time of my life. 99 to early 07. Soooooo many concerts. Downside was that was when I got hooked on "partying" now I can enjoy concerts more because I can remember them the next day.
This is my favorite Distubed song... I would play this endlessly during my teenage days and it brings back a lot of memories... appreciate yall taking the time to react to it 🔥💯
So underrated, this was my favorite as a middle schooler on the school bus listening to this on a cd player with anti skip technology, which was all the rage at the time. If you know you know
For a more mellow Disturbed "Hol on to the Memories" My fav song by DIsturbed is "The Light" The first few albulms definately some of heir best/ The mellow out a bit You can really hear those who have influenced their music.
gosh i know this song is one of their most popular ones but it’s still one of their best, if not THEIR best! i’ve listened to every disturbed song like a million times but this song just hits different
Oh man this album came out my the start of my high school senior year. One of my all time favorite albums! They were heavy back then. And such a unique sound. Used to crank this shit in my cars system! Another great reaction! 🤘😈🤘 p.s. that symbol on the album cover is a mix of like 8 different religious symbols into one
This whole album was my jam in middle/high school. Had a hoodie that said be lie ve with the lie in red that i wore so much it wore out 😂😂 David Draiman’s vocal ability is out of this world, and no matter how hard the riffs get or how gruff his voice gets--i always find his voice just soothing. Definitely a nostalgic band for me!
Nostalgic band for you LOL 😂 way to make me feel old. I was 25, married with 2 kids when Disturbed came out LOL 😂 I'll be 48 in a few months and still love them.
There was a stretch of time from the late '90s through like 2005 or so where it seemed like you HAD to have a cover of a '70s or '80s song on your album if you were a nü metal band, and Disturbed are almost synonymous with that concept, to this day. On their first major label release, they did a (great) cover of "Shout" by Tears For Fears (the Disturbed version is called "Shout 2000"), then did "Land of Confusion" on their third album, then had a hidden track at the end of their 5th album called "Ishfwilf" that's a (meh) cover of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." Their next release, "The Lost Children," was a collection of unreleased B-sides that included a previously-recorded cover of "Midlife Crisis" by Faith No More and a new cover of "Living After Midnight" by Judas Priest. Hollywood's favorite cover by them is on their 7th studio album. They are a cover song machine.
Awesome reaction as usual guys! One of the songs I've been requesting in here forever 😂 y'all would seriously make my week if you guys reacted to free by dark new day!
The music video for this song had some "explosion" scenes. It was banned right after 9/11. The video for The Vengeful One was also banned shortly after being released because it showed newscasters being killed & that was the time when the female reporter was shot on air. Erie how the videos came out and then things actually happened similar to the videos.
I've been listening to this song for 21 years and I never realised that was the lyrics, I have always heard it as heaven just isn't hot enough, burn me alive inside. Which I took to mean as embracing the pain and accepting it.
This song was his perspective of the story of Job, in the Bible. He is singing from Job's point of view (as he confronted God for being tormented & tested; to prove his devotion). The emotion conveyed in the song really makes you feel Job's frustration & confusion.
PLEASE REACT TO NEVER AGAIN BY DISTURBED -- DISTURBED SINGER DAVID DRAIMAN IS JEWISH -- THE SONG IS ABOUT THERE NEVER BEING ANOTHER HOLOCAUST. SIDE NOTE -- HIS GRANDFATHER LIVED IN ISRAEL AND WAS A CANTOR. SINGING IS IN HIS GENES.
If you want more of "Softer" Disturbed, their Evolution Album has several songs that are different from their norm. David said in an interview that "you can't fully appreciate the hard without having the soft." But my favorite "soft" song is Darkness from their Believe album.
This is easily top 3 Disturbed songs for me... alongside Voices, and Stricken. Nu metal is hard to define. I don't bother using the term anymore unless I'm talking about Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit. Do some more Rehab! Love and peace!
Considering what happened to Draiman later (Inside the Fire, the whole of Asylum)... this song is instructive. Don't test the Universe. It will follow through and take EVERYTHING. I like Believe, but this song was a test of the Fates, and they answered. Hard.
Don’t hate me y’all, but most of the Disturbed songs I’ve heard sound incredibly similar. I do like them, though. They’ve found a formula that works for them. Tbf I haven’t heard their full discography. And they were pretty fkin good when I saw them live 😊
Dude. I have listened to this song since 2002 when it came out on Believe and I just got it. He is having a conversation with (the devil?) The verse is the entity telling him all the things he has done or will do and the chorus is him talking back to it saying he prays for worse than he can do anyway. Ergo meaning that he can not do shit to him.
You should checkout their song "Conflict" off their first (and best) album. Also, you guys should do a "System Of A Down Sunday". Work through their discography and you wont regret it. You can then branch out into Serj's solo work. Great music. 🤘
Went through most of the comments and didn't see it. The symbol that you pointed at are religious symbols meshed together as one. The album title is Believe, hence the symbols. If you look close you can see a Cross (Christianity), a Crescent Moon (Islam), a Six Pointed Star of David (Judaism), and a 5 pointed Star (known as the Pagan Pentacle - usually used as the symbol for Wicca). I'm not sure why they didn't include Hinduism and Buddhism as well, but I digress. It's supposed to represent religious unity.
Nu Metal includes rap rock/rap metal but Nu Metal is more than that, Nu metal (sometimes stylized as nü-metal, sometimes called aggro-metal) is a subgenre of alternative metal that combines elements of heavy metal music with elements of other music genres such as hip hop, alternative rock, funk, industrial, and grunge. Nu metal bands have drawn elements and influences from a variety of musical styles, including multiple genres of heavy metal. Nu metal rarely features guitar solos or other displays of musical technique; the genre is heavily syncopated and based on guitar riffs. Many nu metal guitarists use seven-string guitars that are down-tuned to produce a heavier sound. DJs are occasionally featured in nu metal to provide instrumentation such as sampling, turntable scratching and electronic backgrounds. Vocal styles in nu metal include singing, rapping, screaming and growling. Nu metal is one of the key genres of the new wave of American heavy metal.Bands like Sepultura and System of a Down incorporated indigenous and Middle Eastern traditional instruments
Disturbed is a cross between nu metal and alternative metal. David took vocal lessons if not mistaken before the Believe album. Not just regular vocal but opera style which allows him to get those melodic tones as well as combine the metal gruff behind it. Definitely a unique style and that what makes him an awesome vocalist. A lot of other vocalists started doing the same thing shortly after. Their newest one Bad Man is a banger 🤘😎🤘
Here is how to know the difference between rap metal and nu metal Rap metal: hip hop and heavy metal fused Nu metal: thrash metal, grunge, industrial, funk, and hip hop mixed Nu metal doesn’t need rapping (kinda like trip hop)
Man, this song got buried by the media. The music video basically got screwed in the aftermath of the media shitstorm that was 9/11. This song should have been so much bigger but instead we would basically have to wait for Stricken/Ten Thousand Fists (2005) before we would get our next big Disturbed radio hit song.
The origins of Nu Metal go back to bands like Suicidal Tendencies,Faith No More,Blondie and others in the 80’s including the songs with rock/metal bands and rappers together, Nu Metal is a complexed genre that a lot of mainstream people and critics don’t understand but the true underground fans like myself do, I suggest watching the documentary series Metal Evolution and the episode on Nu Metal because the guy doing it hated Nu Metal at first but looked at it as an anthropologist and actually studied all the music and gave a breakdown
I’ve never requested a reaction before but will u guys do DEPECHE MODE -PERSONAL JESUS -it’s quite good and up your dance alley 6 -and u guys only have done o e buy them
What Draiman does isn't really rapping, it's moderately harsh vocals that often include syncopation. Generally the people who call Disturbed "nu metal" are doing so as an insult or to criticize their sound, because what they do is just plain metal.
He's saying living his life IS his prayer. It's hard enough without taking time out for God. That's where he's WRONG, but this is what he meant by the song
