That was the full version. The abrupt ending was signifying death, which can happen suddenly. By far, my favourite Dream Theater song! Glad you guys done this 🤘

Being a drummer and my dad being basically Steve Vai, this was our jam song. We both jammed, we both sang, but this was my first "melodic" song I grew up on. These kids these days have no clue what music is. I'm black, death, thrash, Nu metal, but I'm a tenor and can sing this drumming like it wasn't shit. But THIS song will always be a special time in my heart. Jamming with my dad, a lead guitarist well established gave it all up for me...Selfish prick! XD

Is someone going to tell them that the drummer in Dream Theater is the same guy who played on Avenged Sevenfold's Nightmare album after The Rev died?
@codydrummer
@codydrummer 5 месяцев назад
FYI Hollywood, I know you're a fan of Avenged Sevenfold. Their guitarist Synyster Gates and the Rev both cite Dream Theater as one of their influences. The abrupt ending is a nod to the Beatles I believe who had an abrupt ending due to running out if tape. When Bruce Dickinson quit Iron Maiden, Dream Theater's James LaBrie was mentioned as a possible replacement. I think the next Dream Theater song should be "As I Am". It's another pretty straightforward song like this one and was inspired by Queensryche's guitarist telling John Petrucci of DT that he could give him lessons on how to write hits.

you forgot Queensryche as a core ingredient to the mix of this gem. The ending is abrupt because about the end of life. It's there and suddenly it's not. It ends quick and without warning. Some songs are so memorable and leave such an impression that you just can't forget the first time you heard it (same is true for me Smells like Teen Spirit). First time I heard Pull Me Under (or Dream Theatre at all) I was in Piedmont, CA it was late in the year 1992, I was working at a Safeway. I was in my car taking my lunch break returning to work and it came on an underground metal station from San Jose (92.3. i think it was), and I was slackjawed gobsmack floored as this blasted through my speakers and was instantly hooked. I was 5 mins late returning from lunch because I could not turn it off. I called the station later to find out who it was, went the next day to Tower Records and bought the CD. To this day, it's one of my top most played CDs I have. Interestingly enough similar circumstances first time I heard Teen Spirit by Nirvana - but I had just gotten off work and on my way home.

That is the biggest understatement right there. I got introduced to them back in 1995 when I had a Japanese exchange student live with us for a year. He was a guitarist and had a LOT of Dream Theater's CD's including Images and Words where this song came from. To say that album had a profound impact on my tastes in metal is not doing it justice. They had a HUGE following in Japan long before they were popular here in the states. To give you perspective despite being big into metal I did not meet another Dream Theater fan until almost 3 years later when I was in boot camp in Illinois, and it was JUST one guy. Apparently his home town had an indie station that would play their songs a lot (lucky chump 😛) Since the BRIDGES in most of their songs is longer than most radio friendly pop and rock songs its not a surprise they don't get as much play. Their entire catalog is filled with absolute bangers and this song was on the shorter side of their normal songs. These guys are literal musical craftsmen. Not their heaviest track but "Space-Dye Vest" off of their Awake album is still my personal favorite. it got me through a really rough part of my life when I was in my early 20's. Though for PURE epic musicianship you have to listen to Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a memory a SEVENTY SEVEN minute long metal opera (A story across the whole album) and it is glorious

Songs to check out As I Am Panic Attack In the name of God Endless Sacrifice The Dance of Eternity Forsaken The Dark Eternal night A nightmare to remember The Glass Prison The Root of all evil Honor thy father That’ll get ya started! A cpl of the longer songs, in the name of god and endless sacrifice have killer instrumentals in the middle of them. Both are off the Train of Thought Album and is probably my fav. Album. Then Systematic Chaos. But the song Panic Attack is a very fitting title for that song. Mike Portnoy on Drums and the greatest living drummer IMO John Petrucci is a virtuoso on guitar And Jordan Ruddess on keys, was accepted to the Juilliard school of music in the 2nd grade and Music Radar dubbed him the best keyboardist EVER!

One of the most underrated moments from Dream Theater is playing "Hollow Years" Live from Budokan. This song is proof that if Dream Theater wanted to, they could've dominated the mainstream airwaves. The live version is so much better than the studio version because they throw in so much improv. After that you can return to the heavier side of Dream Theater by listening to Panic Attack. Both of these songs are on the shorter side but are still great.
@jasonjames6383

Best to ALWAYS choose the original over the radio version. They always cut so much out. Here's a good example, machinehead halo, they cut out the instrumental out of it..... that's what makes the song EPIC!

I always considered DT as a mix of Megadeth, Rush, Queensryche, Yes, and Pink Floyd. Some songs lean more on one two of these but generally, these are the ingredients I always picked up! Though they always made sure to throw some more stuff like Metallica, Muse, Radiohead, Linkin Park, et cetera

I'd suggest their songs "Badlands" or "Gods Of Wrath", Metal Church is another medium popularity band that never got the full recognition they deserved. Dream Theater wear their influences on their sleeves. Later recordings have blatant references to Pantera, Soundgarden, Tool, Muse, Pink Floyd, even Coldplay - and as always, the ones you already named, Rush, Metallica, Maiden, etc. On the DVD commentary for "Scenes From A Memory" they actually say things like "this is the Marillion section," "there's that Dixie Dregs riff," like every transition is a different homage.

This is a song from the POV of Hamlet. "Oh, that this too, too solid flesh would mel(t)" is from his first soliloquy. They cut off of the "t" to make it even more sudden. It’s not easy to pull off a song that long and make it interesting and most of all, cohesive. Yet, somehow, they did it. My other favorite crowning achievement of theirs is the entire Metropolis Pt. 2 : Scenes From a Memory album. to add interest to this song: This is the opening track for the album "The Passing Light of Day". The album is a concept album that explores the personal and emotional journey of the band's main composer and frontman, Daniel Gildenlöw, through a life-threatening illness. In 2014, Gildenlöw was diagnosed with a flesh-eating bacteria infection that left him in a life threatening condition. The album is about his experiences during this period, including his time in the hospital, facing death, and the introspection that comes with such a life-altering event. The lyrics of this sons start like this: "I was born in this building It was the first Tuesday I'd ever seen And if I live to see tomorrow It would be my Tuesday number: 2119" So he is in the same hospital where he was born 2119 Tuesdays ago... (well one day short of that!) and as I understad its about the uncertainty about living another day, relfecting on that and that he will not be making any promises to any gods to see another day. The rest of the album is about what he reflected about durnig his time in the hospital, about the good and bad things he did, and a very special song about his life with his wife (also another one about the one time he cheated, wich is one of my favorite songs!) If toy fnally decide to listen to "On a Tuesday" you shuould know two things, 1) your in for a ride and 2) turn the volume up to 11

Is this the way Rondo ends a tribute to Dream Theater? We know their producer is a big fan of Dream Theater so it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was. Funny how I never made the connection between the two songs until just now. We live and learn as they say. Kitsune up. See You

Have you guys listened to Suffer the Masses by Flotsam & Jetsam yet? If you enjoyed this song and like the vocals (Geddy Lee-ish) then Suffer the Masses is right up your alley and will NOT disappoint! Give it a listen and react!

If you want to stick with prog metal, Symphony X! Personally love The End of Innocence, or Paradise Lost for a slower option. So many choices though.

This song would be perfect background music for an angel fighting a demon in the sky.

Hey Boys, you should check out O'Keefe's music foundation version, just for the fun of it. It's amazing. Sung by the same girl who did 46&2

I have respect for Dream Theater, but I think Fates Warning deserves more love since they were a direct influence.

Guys there is SO much to cover by dream theater, you have only just scrapped off the crust of the tip of the iceberg. You minds will continue to be blown. Their last couple albums have been producing banger after banger. If you want to get a quintessential dream theater song, almost every show I've seen them play they encore with "count of tuscany"

Some of the lyrics were from a 9th Century poem by the Venerable Bede an English monk.

Was he Shakespeare? Because this is about Hamlet, with some of the lines literally cribbed from the play.
