Fun Fact: The lyrics are about drug addiction, something Clapton knew quite well. As he explained in his autobiography Clapton, when he recorded this song, he had kicked a serious heroin habit but was filling his body with cocaine and alcohol. His attitude at the time was that he could manage his addiction and quit at any time - he just didn't want to; that's why he could sing so objectively about a drug that was consuming him. When he finally did get off drugs and alcohol, he had to learn how to make music while sober, which was a big transition because everything sounded very rough to him. He also realized how damaging his addiction was to himself and others on a personal level, and became active in helping others get through their addictions; in 1998 he opened the Crossroads rehab center in Antigua, where clients go through a 29-day wellness-centered approach to treatment.

Eric Clapton was far from straight edge! He had just kicked a heroin addiction when he recorded this song, but was still heavy into Cocaine and alcohol! This song was originally written by J.J. Cale!

Jj Cale wrote this in 1976 Clapton covered it in 1977 and released it in on his Album “SlowHand” . It was my dad’s favorite but I remember my mom not liking it much 😂

In 1982 we got married and the dj was playing music you could dance to. Everyone was having a good time then my new wife requested this song. Never saw a dance floor empty faster in my life. It was just her and her best friend out there dancing to it. Lol!!!

Nice reaction on a slippery subject. Yeah, there was a famous 2 year period of inactivity around 1970. It was heroin. It was Pete Townsend of The Who that helped pull him out. See "The Rainbow Concert" from 1973. Pete gathered other legends Ron Wood, Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Rick Gretch. They recorded 2 shows at the Rainbow Theater and it helped Eric dig his way out of that addiction. I read where he thought Cocaine and alcohol were better and he could handle them. But I think it was alcohol that did him worse in the 80's. His rehab included setting up a center in Antigua called Crossroads. To support it, he produced star studded benefit concerts, (check out ZZ Top's performance). And as others said, this is a song written by his friend, JJ Cale.

Wikipedia: In 2012, Ferrari honoured Clapton with the one-off special project car, the Ferrari SP12 EC. In July 2013 Clapton displayed it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England in the Michelin Supercar Run. In 2014, Clapton explained that Ferrari is still his favourite car brand. Among the other vehicles Clapton owns or has owned are a vintage Mini Cooper Radford that was a gift from George Harrison. Ironic when you know the history they share.

Oh man this takes me back, I can see myself as a tiny child in the car with mom im singing every word of Cocaine as loud as possible LOL even now as she is bedridden and I take care of her all I have to do to make her laugh is start singing at the top of my lungs to whatever song is playing even the commercials LOL another great song about snow comes from Fleetwood Mac, Gold Dust Woman check it out sometime ✌🖤🤘🌟😎 The Icebreaker about your most illegal thing you've ever done has me rethinking my entire life... I've been a pretty good girl most of my life, aside from buying and selling party favors, having Instant Karma and a hypersensitive conscience has kept me in check LOL I'm going to say shoplifting, did it three times in my life, once as a kid I stole chapstick which my mom made me take back to the manager with my tearful apologies, once as a young adult I couldn't afford dog food for my shepherd so I stole a gigantic bag of it from the grocery store, just left it on the bottom of my cart as I paid for everything else and walked out with the dog food, I will never forget that panicking my heart was racing so fast, probably because of what happened to me the second time as a teenager... I stole some fake fingernails from a drugstore and I got caught, they decided to make an example out of me and it was horrific! The security guard could tell that I was young and stupid and didn't know my rights and he really took advantage of that and became abusive. He called the police to have me arrested and when they handcuffed me my nose started bleeding profusely, we ended up sitting in the office for like a half an hour before it stopped, they insisted on walking me out the doors in handcuffs instead of just letting me walk out holding a rag under my nose, they started getting pissed off at me like it was something I could control and then the snotty rebellious teenager in me told them 'fine go ahead and handcuff me you can hold the rag under my nose at this point I don't care!' I'm sure they didn't want to be accused of hitting me so they waited for the bleeding to stop, they handcuffed me again and took me out to the police car, looking back the bleeding went on for so long they should have called paramedics, f****** idiots! I was an idiot too or I would have insisted that they did, if only I knew then what I know now... when I got to court I found out that they lied and said I stole everything that I already had in my purse on top of the fingernails, I lucked out with a decent judge who actually believed me, he gave me probation and said as long as I didn't get in trouble until I was 18 that it wouldn't go on my permanent record❤

ex husband and I went to a Clapton concert in the late 70's and he had some of the white powder in his sock. They searched all of us coming through the doors of the concert venues (checking purses and patting people down) There were big black trash cans where they threw whatever they found that people were trying to smuggle in. Lots of liquor bottle, drugs ect.... Needless to say they found his stash and trashed it. During the concert people were pulling out huge liquor bottles and mirrors to do the coke, no idea what door they managed to come through. When Clapton played this song my ex cried. Decades later it still makes me laugh.

lol Would your rather: I gradjitated high school in '76. Most of the fun things I did over the next decade involved at least something, if not many things, illegal. Yes, the song is about cocaine. It was written by JJ Cale, though it was authentic to Eric as well, because he most definitely had "better living through chemistry" issues. The song is, in the end, a warning about cocaine...and other things by extension. "If you want to get down, down on the ground cocaine..." "Don't forget this fact, you can't get it back, cocaine..."

Back in the day Eric Clapton was a heavily addicted to drugs, and he was a fanboy to the song's original writer JJ Cale. You know how we act when we're around a celebrity, especially one we love, Eric was like this with JJ Cale. JJ Cale was from Oklahoma, and introduced the world to the Okie sound, which Eric loved. JJ Cale is one of those very cool, laid back, down home, don't get excited over anything kinda guy. But Eric introduced JJ Cale to the world; at the time JJ Cale was about to give up the music industry when Eric discovered him and covered JJ's songs. The original song and most of his song were very laid back, oozing cool when you listen to them. You must listen to some of JJ Cale's original songs, like Cocaine, Bringing It Back, After Midnight. The whole of JJ Cale;s Naturally album is a must listen to. Sadly we lost JJ Cale not long ago.
