GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY!! OMG you guys, this was the best! Glad you enjoyed this taste of Frank, I loved all of the giggling. Frank was a genius guitarist & composer. He had an incredibly talented band called the Mothers of Invention & they really are hard to define by a genre. Brilliantly intricate compositions with ridiculous off color lyrics, his catalog is vast but I like his 70s works the most. And yes Hollywood, that's Frank's deep ass voice haha there are a couple more songs I think you'd really enjoy, he does mellow, he does chonky, he does instrumental. This was just the tip, so get out that Dragon Lotion & ease on in! Thank you SO much for what you guys do ❤(As Frank also says, keep it greasey...so it goes down easaaay! Hahaha 😁🤘)

If you're looking to explore, may I recommend COSMIK DEBRIS, DINAH MOE HUM, MONTANA, I'M THE SLIME, WONDERFUL WINO, SAN BER'DINO, THE TORTURE NEVER STOPS, BROKEN HEARTS ARE FOR ASSHOLES, KEEP IT GREASEY and the classic WHY DOES IT HURT WHEN I PEE. Instrumentals Peaches En Regalia, Black Napkins & Watermelon in Easter Hay are also top notch!

Zappa was a virtuoso guitar player and brilliant composer, who took almost nothing in life seriously. You guys asked about his band a couple times: his backing band was the Mothers of Invention. The lineup rotated over the years, but Zappa always stocked it with incredible talent (Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, etc...). I really hope to see you guys react to more of his stuff!

Frank was more than just a musician, he was basically a philosopher. No matter what it was, Zappa never let anyone tell him what to do and he seemed to have an opinion on everything. The more reactions to Zappa, the better. His discography covers basically every genre and jumps across the whole spectrum from insane classical pieces to entire albums that tell horribly filthy stories about prison gangs, having sex with kitchen appliances, and catholic schoolgirls. He was insane and a genius all at once.

You call yourselves rappers? OK, then you absolutely need to listen to the song Trouble Every Day from Zappa's first album Freak Out! I believe it might be the first song that delivers the lyrics in a rap-style, not to mention the biting words that ring as a true today as they did back in 1965! Little fact you should know about Dirty Love, Tina Turner was doing background vocals. Things to know: His band was the Mothers of Invention, but there were different groupings of musicians in it from the 60s to the 70s when he just toured as Frank Zappa He composed all the music, and played guitar, and when he played live solos, they were ALWAYS improvised during the show. He fits no genre, but had said that Johnny 'Guitar' Watson was the main inspiration for his style of guitar, though he expanded his mastery of the instrument far beyond Blues and R&B Thanks for trying him out, and what you played is the kind of stuff that thumbs its nose at the PC crowd, down and dirty is so much more fun. Hope you cue him up again soon! PK

Frank Zappa was an avante-garde rock musician. He hopped between genres like it was nothin'. If you really wanna get a taste of his live self, look into the live performances of "Cosmic Debris", and "Montana" that are on YT. He composed and conducted everything on his records, as well as being an amazing shred maestro. Oh, and he may have looked strange, but he got mad groupies.

Zappa was born in my hometown, Baltimore MD. Made his mark in LA and stints in NYC. He always had a large band of the highest caliber musicians. In fact, the rehearsal process for Zappa was insanely difficult, and you can find stories about it on youtube. He hired them and paid them a salary. It was a 9-5 for them when not touring. Live performance is where Zappa's band stands out. They basically had to learn to play every song in any genre style, anytime Zappa flashed a signal. They rehearsed until they could pull off anything live. A lot of his musicians resented him for it, but they knew they were the best live band on the planet. Then there was the PRMC, and record censorship panels in congress. Zappa was probably the staunchest defender of freedom of speech, appearing constantly on CNN and other news outlets, and testifying in congress. His lyrics are hilarious and a running joke alot of the time. The music though is downright serious shit. Zappa is not a Funk guy. He just has mastered all the genres and mixes them at will. The only way to categorize Zappa to genre is to create a genre called Zappa, or now (as this has already happened), Zappaesque. You will often hear bands that are hard to define and genre-fluid described as "Zappaesque." TLDR, More Zappa please.

I'm late to the party here, but this was recorded at Ike Turner's studio, and Tina Turner was one of the background singers. Frank was singing in his normal voice at the beginning, and the deep bass was frequency shifted. Frank had two film soundtracks to his credit before having a band, both for "C" movies at best: Run home Slow and The Worlds's Greatest Sinner, as well as a few pieces of instrumental orchestral music. Zappa had several iterations of his bands, starting in the early sixties with the first version of the Mothers of Invention. Over time Frank had many people in the band who would go on to be big as solo artists. When the pop group The Turtles got sued out of existence the two main vocalists Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman joined as "Flo and Eddie" (not allowed to use their names due to the lawsuit). His group around 1973 included George Duke and Chester Thompson (later drummer for Genesis). He's had guitarists like Steve Vai and Adrian Belew play in the band, and drummers like Terry Bozzio just to name a few. The band you may have heard of is Zappa plays Zappa, which is his son Dweezil playing Frank's music. I would say if anything Frank inspired Clinton since Frank in the late 50's.

The thing with Frank Zappa is that he has played/composed in almost every genre imaginable, from pop/rock to experimantal aleatoric and concrete quasi-classical music. And most of his music was actually composed and put in notes. To play with Zappa was both a torture and the biggest honour, and there are so many very famous musicians who co-operated with him, and Steve Vai, Tina Turner, Captain Beefheart, Terry Bozzio are just a handful of plenty of names. He recorded almost 100 albums. And if you want to react to Zappa, you can try "Why Does it Hurt When I Pee" or "Stick it Out" for crossing borders. ;-)

Frank Zappa began recording music in the early 1960s! I do believe that his collection is over 100 albums! He played guitar which he taught himself he also taught himself how to write music and wrote the music sheet music for each and every instrument in his band including the drums! Zappa actually started out as a drummer and then switched to guitar when he was about 15!! There's actually a new documentary out directed by Alex Winters which is just called Zappa!! Might I suggest you watch it if you are serious about getting into the world of Frank Zappa!! If you decide to go down the rabbit hole, prepare yourself for a journey which will be like no other!!!

I believe I heard the album that this song is on back in 1974 something like that for the first time I was 15 or 16 years old and it was my introduction to the world of Frank Zappa!! I have been a huge fan ever since and attended several concerts during the late 70s and early 80s at the Palladium Theater in New York City where is Zappa would have multiple concerts around Halloween each year!!! As a matter of fact I was in attendance at the very first live broadcast on MTV in 1981 of a Frank Zappa concert Halloween 1981 it was broadcast simultaneously over FM radio and I was there and it was awesome!!! There is no experience on the planet like a Frank Zappa live concert at Halloween time!! Unfortunately those days are long gone, rest in peace Frank!!!

Frank Zappa Plays about any instrument he wants to but most often guitar and xylophone and keyboard. Little bit of trivia is that Stevie Vie used to be in his band and he's got a song called Stevie spanking where he trades lick for lick on the guitar with Steve Vai. That just might give you an idea of how good Zappa can be on the guitar when he wants to be.

i can't recall Zappa mentioning Parliament in an interview and am not familiar enough with Parliament to know if Zappa quoted them musically however Parliament has quoted Zappa musically in concert. they have played the main riff from "I'm the Slime."

If you judge the word "underrated" correctly, Frank Zappa was certainly one of the most underrated guitar players of his time, and his son Dweezil, is even better. He also played almost every single 'genre' of music all the way to orchestral classical. When you use the word "Genius" it isn't misused on FZ

Zombie Woof is another killer Zappa track. The studio solo on Dirty Love is about as nasty as guitar playing gets.

Zappa is a rabbit hole. He's recorded with several different bands he's assembled. All TOP notch players. Legendary players. He's written full symphony orchestral pieces with the oddest combinations of instruments. You could listen for years and still discover new shit of his you weren't yet aware of. What I've just typed here doesn't even scratch the surface. You should listen to "Apostrophe" (album) for some good laughs.

Hollywood: Idk if anyone else in the comments said it, but you were thinking of “Abba Zabba” candy bars from Half Baked! “Abba Zabba, you my only friend!”

Zappa goes back to the mid-late 60's listen to "trouble every day". He had many people with him some for decades, including Volman and Kaylyn from the Turtles, made the first rock video "200 motels". Worked for recording artists right. fought against censorship from rightwing dipshits. raised a nice bunch of kids and loved his wife (among others)

Zappa was free in his mind, politics, music and just the embodiment of cool. It's a wondous rabbit hole, explore the warren within.

Frank Zappa was a true original American musical writer and conductor. His first recording band was called "The Mothers of Invention." Study the Zapster and learn. Check out "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?" Learn from yer elders. BTW... the nugout, peanut butter confection was called "Abba-Zabba." Peace on earth.

That's Zappa on the deep vocals but it's been pitched down (i.e., recorded at a faster speed and then the tape slowed down to the tempo on the record, lowering the pitch a full step).
