This song was on John Lennon's personal playlist just prior to his death and when he was recording his final album, he took the album this song is taken from in to play to those who were working on that final album of his. As to where to go next with the Kate Bush discography, there are very many songs worth including, quite a few with official videos and just as many without any. But I guess you could probably take a look at the official video for her song "This Woman's Work' which is very different from this and much more 'normal.' She wrote the song, does all of the instrumentation, all f the vocals, the produced it and she directed the video. It was originally written for a movie to match some movie footage that had already be shot. It was written from the perspective of a man whose wife and unborn baby are fighting for their lives during childbirth and he is confronted with the possibility of losing both of them. Just a couple of months before he was Killed, Kate Bush was interviewed on radio and cited his song '#9 Dream' as her all time favourite song. But her list of famous fans of her music is just wild. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin called her a genius. Elton John spoke of her as a once in a lifetime talent. Prince called her his favourite woman after being pretty much hypnotized by her album 'Hounds of Love' (the album that included 'Running Up That Hill'). David Gilmour of Pink Floyd personally paid to have her first professional quality demo recording done and has called her completely unique. Alanis Morissette said that Kate Bush was the reason that she wanted to be a singer. Patti Smith called her a UFO. Dusty Springfield said she was left staggered at Kate Bush's talent. Bjork once called her 'Mother.' Members of Metallica have said that when they were recording 'Masters of Puppets' Kate Bush was one of the artists they were listening to. It is well publicised how much of a Kate Bush fan Big Boi is, but is less well known that Tupac was a fan. Annie Lennox has called her magical. Tori Amos described her as one of the very few recording artists, male or female, whose music actually matters. From within Punk, John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) of the Sex Pistols has called her music beauty beyond compare. Hilarious to see the initially confused faces and then "This is Fire!". Kate Bush was a proper trailblazer for women in the pop industry. She went on to produce her own songs and it's great a new generation are finding her work. This is from her earlier sometimes quirky days but you should check out "The Man with the Child in his Eyes" which is a haunting piano based song that was an early big hit for her. She wrote it at just 13 and it was recorded when she was 16.
Babooshka is apparently also Russian slang for an old lady and 'old lady' is British slang for someone's wife. It makes sense when you listen to the lyrics. The sampled smashing crockery at the end is the wife throwing it at her 'cheating' husband.

Babooshka was among her demos, around 1975....song recorded in 1980, so no one on the studio, among the musicians, the coproducer, her mum, brothers, father, friends, absolutely no one during the production of the album have asked, c'mon....she knew the meaning, like the sound of the word and just want to keep it. When she released her first song they showed a video on Swedish TV. This was when we only had two TV channels. Ten minutes later I met my friends at the youth center. Everyone had seen it.We all had a new favorite artist. This is another favorite.
A massive talent - a soup to nuts kind of artist - writing, playing, recording, producing, choreography, dance, video concepts. Makes today's "stars" - with a staff numbering in the hundreds - look like the vacuous corporate constructions they truly are. Give her track "Hammer Horror" a spin - my personal favourite - guaranteed chills.
Wonderful song, best video ever (I've been in love with Kate for 46 years and counting) and she is so talented and her work is so diverse that she defies categorisation, she is her own genre. Listen to The Man With The Child In His Eyes (another stunning video), hauntingly beautiful song written when she was thirteen and released three years later. This Woman's Work is another heart wrenching slice of beauty, there's so much to discover once you fall down the rabbit hole. Genius.
Kate Bush was discovered by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. David has a new record out where his daughter sings the lead. It’s a great tune with a brilliant Gilmour guitar solo.
He did not discover her, he did a favor to a friend(Ricky Hopper) of her brother... It's not like you can't find videos interviews of Gilmour telling the real story. Just sayin'.
@michaelasay8587 that is an interesting mindset. If you have not personally been familiar with something, then the most logical conclusion is that the song could not have been of any great consequence. This means that you as lorekeeper of all knowledge about all music have a huge responsibility in terms of cataloging everything to understand exactly where it fits in the great scheme of music releases throughout the world in all territories . That sounds exhausting keeping track of all that.
She just never wanted to tour. She turned down opening for Fleetwood Mac in the late 70s, and it pissed her new American label off really bad. Very private person, but so brilliant. I think its kind of a shame she never wanted to tour the world. But would she have gotten big in America? Idk, honestly. She is way too cerebral for here haha.
Not sure what the comment section in your previous Kate Bush videos were on about, but Kate is generally considered Art Pop. She does have Art Rock songs like James And The Cold Gun and Violin (both great songs!) but she's mostly a Pop-oriented musician. Art Rock and Art Pop are simply more creative and slightly experimental variations of their parent genres. Where a Rock song can be a standard riff, beat, and good time energy about partying and playing shows, an Art Rock song can have experiments with electronica, orchestral elements, sound effects, samples, tribal elements, classical elements, and many more liberally creative choices that would otherwise be considered a bit much for a typical radio single. If that sounds like Progressive music, you'd be right! To many, they are one in the same, but others would tell you that the difference lies in exactly how dedicated to experimental structure the song is. A Prog song will likely have a lot of meter changes, more aggressive mood dynamics and virtuosic instrumentation, while an Art song can be simpler but still unique and creative. There will of course be the argument that All music is Art so the term is redundant. There is surely a point to be made there, but I'd say that there's a spectrum between music made for entertainment and music made for creative expression. A Pop hit single or a Rock bar tune may be further to the former, while an experimental piece with fusions and changing moods may be more on the latter. Art Rock/Pop artists include Kate Bush, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Björk, Peter Gabriel, Fiona Apple, and Queen. Plenty of these artists often are known for multiple genres which is very much a pattern trait for more liberally creative artists in these genres.
@@DrStrangelove3891 I had Roxy Music initially but I figured Brian Eno of the group was a better representative of the genre. Talking Heads are an interesting choice, perhaps Art Punk? Closer to New Wave which is rather artsy already but I can certainly see the Art Rock side of them!
John Giblin. I agree, it was one of his best lines ever, even better than the technically flasher stuff he did with ‘Brand X’,( himself and Phil Collins were a hell of a rhythm section). ‘Breathing’ from the same album as this, also has wonderful bass playing.
It was Kate in both outfits. Hence the contrast in appearance dovetails the song lyrics. All it took was wearing glasses for Clark Kent to disguise himself... Cloudbusting, Hounds of Love and Army Dreamers are great picks.

Kate is a musical genius, plays instruments , produces , writes , choreographs her own videos and a wonderful singer . she was a child prodigy her documentary is on you tube of her when she was very young.

Nice thoughtful reaction/analysis. Kate was most often associated with the art pop/art rock/prog rock genres just to try fitting her somewhere, but she was really her own genre. She is very special and did it all - singer, songwriter, composer, pianist, music revolutionary, producer, dancer, mime, choreographer, video director and innovator, visionary. Laughable that it took until 2023 for her to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, something she is clearly over qualified for. Debatable whether any other female artist, past or present, has come close to her comprehensive set of abilities and contributions to the world of music, with the exception perhaps of Joni Mitchell. Has influenced so many artists (male and female) across multiple genres. Didn’t really do mainstream and only did the one live tour back in 1979 at the age of 20. Never toured the US, did little to promote her work there, and did not fit well anywhere in America’s format driven radio network at that time. The fact that she was known at all in the US prior to the 1985 release of ‘Running Up That Hill’ owed much to college radio. Actually had the release of her early albums delayed in America by several years after pissing off the American label/distributor by turning down the chance to support Fleetwood Mac on their ‘Rumours’ tour.
So she is testing her husband to see if he remains faithful. She is older now and sends him letters pretending to be a younger woman. When they meet he realizes she is his own wife and basically he looses trust in her for not trusting him and he leaves her. That’s why the shattered glass at the end: she ruined everything by not trusting him. You should read the lyrics it’s pretty straightforward. Kate Bush was sort of popular in the US when I was in High School in the late 80s, more among the Drama Club crowd and "Scene" girls, but not really enjoying the mainstream popularity of other British acts of the time. Her album covers always drew a lot of a attention though! She was hot and the costumes she wore looked like she came out of the 80s fantasy movie wardrobe!
Part of the reason she didn't really take off in the US was because she never toured there. She hated to fly and was also not a fan of performing live.
Art Rock: Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, some Bowie, for starters. A loose term, as are most terms for musical genres. Quite an overlap with Progressive (Prog) Rock.
I was lucky to see her in Liverpool 1979 (I think). Never heard of her before. My cousins took me to it. Became a lifelong fan. I was very lucky to be there because she experienced major stage fright and rarely performed in concert.
It was the first hit single to include a sample (the smashing sounds, which I understand was crockery from the Abbey Road studios canteen) using the Fairlight CMI. Those sounds after the wife had revealed herself to her husband, signified that she had wrecked the relationship.

Art rock because it was actually its own category during the time frame in which this was released. That doesn't mean that she subscribed to the notion that that's who she was but, context is important. The British press especially was very favorable towards bands that had a progressive element, and thus artists that never really got big in the United States could sell out Arena tours in the UK and elsewhere. A good example of this would be Marillion, early Genesis very much also falls in the art rock category
Kate Bush is the greatest female songwriter the UK has ever produced, without challenge. Check out her album 'The Dreaming', Big Boi from OutKast says it's his favourite record ever made.
Kate is one of the most reluctant singer /producers /dancers, rarely gives interviews, took 12 years out of the public eye when she had her son, yet in 2014 sold out concerts in London for 22 nights in just 15 minutes, one thing she asked for was no phones or filming by the audiences, she wanted to preform in front of the audience and not a sea of mobiles. I know she lived and possibly still has the house in a village where I grew up, rarely seen but when she was no one took any notice, and she bought another place on the coast, not going to say where these places are as Kate has chosen to keep her private life just that. I know she has had many hits in the top 40 in the UK at least 20-ish and is known across the globe, but you won't find Kate turning up too the opening of an envelope, doesn't do anything associated with publicity in this way, trained dancer which is why you'll have videos such as you've seen so far, she writes everything herself, and produces everything including her videos
Babooshka is a Russian/Eastern European word. Means a kerchief on head usually worn buy an older lady. It's also means grandmother but also is a term of endearment to a loved one.
In the 1980s and 90s to break America you had to tour and appear on 900 regional radio stations. Kate never toured anywhere for 4 decades and rarely did any interviews. Even in the UK there are like 6 or something she did at her peak popularity. That's mainly why she didn't have the same impact there but still managed a top 40 chart place with Running Up That Hill despite as far as I know never even going to the USA. KB has different priorities to most, she doesn't make commercial decisions, she does what she wants to do. Even when she played live again she chose a small venue that sold out in minutes. She could have made so much money playing the O2 for 30 dates, they'd have sold out easily but she didn't.
Kate's discography is immense so it's hard to know where to try next. Among my favourites are "Cloudbusting" with Donald Sutherland having a major role in the video. The Sensual World is a completely different side to her that you may really enjoy. My personal fave is "Moments of Pleasure", which you should read the back story on first.
Kate released her debut The Kick Inside in Feb 1978. and she became a mega star all over Europe and tbe UK right away. she was only 17 or 18. How the American market didn't catch on, is a strange thing since it made the list of top 100 pop rock albums from the 70s in Rolling Stone magazine. She had incredible success from that Debut snd after performing a grueling tour, she decided she wanted to spend more time on her studio albums rather than performing live, and because of this every single release was outstanding, but not touring kept her out of the spotlight for many years evrn though she was still adored as an underground legend by musicians and artists the world over. Her influence upon subsequent female artists and songwriters is beyond estimation.

Her demos were rejected by all labels, Ricky Hopper who worked in the music industry as a publicist had asked Gilmour for his help... Hopper was friend of John Carder Bush, her brother.... Gilmour did a favor to a friend...
She sets him up because the relationship has become stagnant, the husband is really excited about babooshka because she reminds him of his wife when they first met. The cello represents the husband, the veil is the wife and the other character is babooshka. Kate Bush never became huge in the US because she didn't like to tour.
