This was in 2000 from the 'Mission Impossible II' movie soundtrack... Ironically, it was also the last track to feature bassist Jason Newsted who "disappeared" in 2001 from Metallica...

Pretty on brand for how they treated Jason unfortunately, he really deserved better. It does seem like they've softened up with Rob being in the band, Rob has such a loveable personality so I think that helps too. Love both Rob and Jason, "My Friend Of Misery" remains my all time favorite Metallica song because of that haunting bassline! RIP Cliff Burton, such an innovative bassist he was!

I'm an old school (80s) Metallica fan, but I legit love this song. I was a truck driver when this came out, and it was getting heavy rotation on FM rock radio. My truck only had an AM/FM radio in it, so I was stuck with whatever popular music of the day. When this came on, I cranked it.

Also fun fact: Limp Bizkit also covered the opening theme to the classic show on the track "Take a Look Around", which is featured in the film and on their album Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water.

My memory is hazy but I think this was the song that caused the whole Napster issue, first original song by Metallica since Reload, their first song made for a soundtrack and was something of comeback for them but it got leaked early on Napster

Yep, this song killed Napster. And gained the band the title of sellouts. Thanks to Lars and his greed.
@JawsVader1970
@JawsVader1970 6 месяцев назад
@marquislexil it really wasn't greed stealing music at the time was hurting bands ,nobody had the balls to stand up to be honest and now we have apple and such with we pay for ,I myself feel more bands should had stood up ,but they were told by their record labels not to even though they were losing money.its kinda a touchy subject to people because at the same time Metallica made the big change to grunge kind of Metallica and the thrash was gone ,I cant blame them they played by their rules whether it be good or not.
@DefinitelyNotBender
@DefinitelyNotBender 6 месяцев назад
@@JawsVader1970 it wasn't stealing lol something has to have a value before it's considered stolen. When you share a file a duplicate is created. Creating a new product. That new product, the duplicate, holds no value. Therefore nothing was stolen. Don't blame the people that exploited the system when the exploits are there to be exploited. Napster share holders just weren' t a part of the proper social class. The companies rapid growth scared the old guard bureaucrat doner class. Because they knew it was the sign of a new guard of "self made"(most trust fund babies like Elon) Elites. And taking out Napster was something the aging Upper Upper class, the 1% as people like to say, wanted to happen badly. They knew eventually some greedy artist would cry about file sharing, so the elites put tons of their money into creating new legislature to keep their grasp on the wealth they had and hopefully slow the new wealth from accumulating. Metallica and Lars money hungry ass were just those patsies. Now corporations make more money off of regular peoples everyday home made content than the people themselves make, on platforms like RU-vid/Spotify/Twitch/etc. thanks to the rapid stripping of personal rights those very laws created to stop Napster devolved into.

I know this is not one of those tracks Metallica Fans would put up, when talking about what makes a great Metallica track, but I love this one. It's so simple, but slaps like hell. Late 90ies/early 2000's Metallica. Underrated in my opinion. Good heavy, alternative rock. Also this was the era that opened up kids to Metallica, that only listened to alternative and nu metal.

More old school Metallica...The Four Horsemen, Fight Fire With Fire 🔥 Newer...Spit Out The Bone, killer video 😎🖤🤘 My neighbor, who is a retired Vegas showgirl, inspires me to be a better person! She's in her eighties, she has more generosity and kindness of spirit than anyone I've ever met. Ever since my mom's stroke she's the one who comes to check on ME to make sure I'm okay, I frequently find flowers or little gifts on my back porch from her, it's like her mission in life to spread joy, she's so cute... her life story is incredible what little I know and every time I feel like s*** or down about life all I have to do is think of her and the stuff that she's overcome and how joyous and generous she still is, I've been fortunate to know a lot of people like this but she's my current one... love to Jean❤🕊

Combination of factors, from it being very much a commercial tie-in - ymmv, but this was at a time when "selling out" was still considered a cardinal offense by certain parts of the metal community - and also that a version of it got leaked to Napster and led to the band suing, placing them squarely at the centre of the long and infamous history of copyright litigation in the internet age. I still think it's a banger, but much like my feelings on U2's similar Elevation from the Tomb Raider soundtrack, its quality as a rock song is in inverse propertion to its depth as a piece of music; both songs are pretty basic from a musicology standpoint, but they don't really need to be complex. They are the simplest form of an idea, ie, listen to how fucking badass we sound.

You guys were asking where the song was from. This was a rare song from a soundtrack that Metallica did in the early 2000’s , namely the 2nd Mission Impossible movie, which would explain the action scenes. The amount of albums seems to decrease with each decade. 80’s they released four, 90’s they released three, 2000’s only one or two, 2010’s one and so far in the 2020’s just one. They aren’t the same band from For Whom the Bell Tolls or Master of Puppets but they’ve shown maturity but also shown that they can still rock. They are also amazing live too!

Fun nugget of trivia about how music videos back then were still mostly shot on-location. This is from Wikipedia: "Most of I Disappear's music video was shot in Monument Valley atop a sandstone butte on April 13, 2000. After accessing the butte by helicopter, Metallica and their instruments were alone on the plateau, circled by filming aircraft, for over twelve hours. By the end of the shoot, winds were so severe that the drum kit was blown over, footage of which appears in the video."

The riff for this started as a variation on Enter Sandman, which is why it probably sounds so familiar. It even has the same slightly weird time signature.

Smokey is correct that this song is from Mission Impossible, the Mission Impossible II soundtrack to be specific! Smokey also calling this song 'Mid-Metallica' is a pretty fair assessment I'd say... Definitely not one of their best songs but it's still a fun little track regardless! I remember when I went to see Mission Impossible Fallout when that came out, I listened to 'I Disappear' and Limp Bizkit's 'Take a Look Around' (Also from Mission Impossible II) on the way to the cinema and it definitely got me more pumped up for the movie! I suppose it helps that the movie was excellent too! 😂
