Rappers React To My Chemical Romance "Helena"!!! 

This was about their grandma Helena (Gerard Way-singer & Mikey Way-bassist ; brothers). They have soooo many great songs!!

Gerard and Mikey's grandma Elena really supported the early days of the band and died just as they were really taking off. Gerard felt incredibly guilty and angry at himself for not being around in her final days and this is his basically his grief screaming out....as part of the album its the opening track that really sets the stage for the story of Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.....

The band name came from an Irvine Welsh novel called Ecstasy - 3 Tales of Chemical Romance". The singer Gerard also felt connected to it because of the fact that for several years, he had substance abuse problems, specifically with alcohol. With the video, the ballerina coming out of the coffin dancing was supposed to represent the spirit of the dead woman "dancing" one last time and saying farewell, "visiting" them one more time (while everyone has their heads bowed and eyes closed) before leaving this earth.

My Chemical Romance such an awesome band. There one of the best EMO band. They started out as pop punk band but evolved to one of if not the best EMO bands.

Amazing song. It almost felt to be "cool" to hate My Chemical Romance, but I always rated them. The voice and the skill of the music shouldn't be underestimated. 'Teenagers' is another fab song by these guys.

The album this is on “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge” and “The Black Parade” are both concept albums and great ones at that. I highly recommend watching Windigoons break down of the “The Black Parade” album and meaning behind it. They were hated for no reason by some. People either love or hate them. I LOVE them obviously.

There’s a really amazing live acoustic version of this song that you guys should check out even if it’s on your own time and not as a reaction. It was done several years later, when my man could not sing as high anymore so they brought the song down several keys and rearranged it and it ended up being more like a sad ballad. Really amazing. Probably my favorite version honestly.

I used to see them at VFW halls in NJ growing up when no one knew who they were. Everyone knew they were going to be huge! Did shots with Gerard more than once. Check out earlier stuff! Vampires Will Never Hurt You is absolutely amazing!

Gerard way (singer) said in an interview that they got the band name from a book he was reading, but I can’t remember what book he said.

This song was written about Gerard (the singer) and Mikey Way's (the bassist) grandmother whom passed away while they were on tour, similar story to Slipknot's 515. This album has zero bad songs! It was the quintessential Emo album of the 2000s that truly pushed it's popularity into what it became in the 2000s. Anything from this album and The Black Parade would be awesome picks to react to! Each album they came out with was usually less Emo than the last, and their last one Danger Days really wasn't Emo at all, just straight forward Pop Punk, albeit really good Pop Punk. But if you listen to their first album, they were much more directly Emo and Hardcore Punk with some moments of Pop Punk added in. Emo prior to this album was typically described as a style of Post Hardcore, which is usually a more musically developed style of Hardcore Punk, and Emo added a more expressive element to the vocals with more introspective lyrics, often regarding love, depression, hardship, and pretty much any passionate emotion. The Emo vocal style that Gerard Way performs goes back to 1985 with the band Rites Of Springs, who are generally considered the first Emo band, or at least the first to really push the Post Hardcore sound into the more vocally expressive and lyrically introspective style that became Emo. The genre became more popular in the 1990s but it was all still very underground in comparison to most music, and the bands weren't using makeup yet. It was a genre defined by the sound before it was about the look. MCR and Fall Out Boy are usually credited as the first bands that added the more overt Pop Punk influences to Emo as well as the gothic look that became so synonymous with the genre in the 2000s. Not-so-fun fact, but MCR started after Gerard Way, who was working in New York City as a Cartoon Network intern, witnessed the attacks of September 11th, and in dealing with the trauma of that day, he wrote his first song Skylines And Turnstiles, which became the first MCR song and would appear on their debut the next year. He changed his career path from cartoons into music, but later went back to cartoons, specifically comics, and wrote a number of successful characters, including Peni Parker from Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse. Gerard is also well known as one of the hottest dudes in 2000s Rock, and y'all can't tell me otherwise!

One off my favs from this band. Say " So Loooong And Goodnight " to someone , and if they continue the lyrics , U def have no daubt they are an MCR fan . Most iconic line ever, from this band . Also the phrase has been used in many memes / posts , the last few years , so maybe thats why it sounds familiar . Gerard Way has such a special / good voice . I Dont love U , Im Not Okay , Mama , and Cancer is a must by this band, Fun fact : Escape The Faith ( Ronnie Radkes first band ) won a radio contest back in 2005 i think , judged by MCR . The prize was to open for MCR on their headlining tour , which lead to ETF signing with Epitaph Records . The band name is inspired by Mikey Way ( Gerards brother and bass guitarist ) from a book title called " Ecstacy : Three tales of Chemical Romance " by Irwin Welsh, The song is a tribute to Gerard and Mikeys grandmother .

It's a great song. On of my favorites from back in the day. Talking about what you guys want on your tombstone mine comes from a western called Ballad of Cable Houge, and it goes (Lord he wasn't a good man and he wasn't a bad man, but Lord he was a MAN). I thought that was pretty awesome saying.

I saw My Chemical Romance with blink-182 on tour together before blink-182 split up. My Chemical Romance came out and blew the roof off the venue, one of the best performances I have ever seen by them, and they played all their hits. I have a lot of respect for that band after seeing them live

So funny thing you should mention the comic book influence, Gerard Way (lead singer) had been a massive fan of comics growing up, so much so that when the band went on hiatus he would actually end up in the comic books industry. He wrote Umbrella Academy and was also the writer behind the "Edge of Spiderverse" comics that became one of the primary inspirations for the "Into the Spiderverse" movies. The character Peni Parker (with the spider-mech) was actually created for that original comic.

The name came from an Irvine Welsh(author of Trainspotting) book called Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance. Fairly certain it’s a drugs thing.

Mikey actually came up with it. They did explain it. I can't remember every thing they said but Mikey read something and liked how chemical romance went together

Song pertains to Gerard's aunt, Helena, who past while the band was on tour. Song is about regret for not spending time with her prior to her death. This song has been in my top ten for the past 25 years.

If you guys want to hear how trippy and connected this world is, Gerard Way (lead singer of My Chemical Romance) grew up in New Jersey across from the twin towers. He tragically watched them fall after the attacks and used writing as a coping mechanism to create the music for MCR. There was a young teenager that listened to early MCR and created a literary world of the music which in turn created the Twilight saga and films. Another person read the twilight books and created a fan fiction erotica series of essays which in turn created the Fifty Shades of Grey novels. The attacks on 9/11 created a butterfly effect that created some of the best selling art of the 21st century.

"Emo" was one of those things where, when people first started saying it, it was meant in a derogatory kind of way to mock how "emotionally hardcore" the genre was. Eventually, it just became the accepted term for mid/late 2000s goth rock. The best way to think of it is like "djent" - it started as people mocking the sound the guitars made, but when you say it, everyone thinks of the genre. Also, if you're diving down the emo rabbit hole, you guys should check out The Used. They were always mentioned in the same breath as MCR and the two bands even covered "Under Pressure" from Queen and Bowie.

I was almost too old to like MCR but they were one of the Emo bands I actually liked, because they still absolutely rocked musically. Smokey was on to something with the Batman style feel of the video, Gerard Wey now creates his own comic books.

I was in middle school when emo was at its most popular point(2005-2008), and I couldn't get into it because I saw it as more of some fashion thing for well off kids that thought their life in a three story house was horrible. It wasn't until I was in college that I gave MCR more of a try and really enjoyed the music. The lyrics are not my favorite, but rip roaring punk speed guitars and drumming are up my alley, with some of the theatrics of Queen or Smashing Pumpkins mixed in.

tbf, the lead singer/frontman of MCR has rejected the emo label, he said their music didn't sound like what they used to traditionally call emo music. But throughout the years he did plafully refer to himself and the band as emo a few times

MCR is one of the greatest operatic rock bands of all time, in my opinion. Definitely a band that transcends the whole emo rock subgenre when you read into the larger story.

I would classify this as emo. But you should know emo doesn't exactly only mean emotional. Emo is shorthand for emotional hardcore. Some people will use the term emocore which I usually reserve for bands that slant harder towards the hardcore side of emo. Still others use the term screamo. This is made up nonsense used by people who have no idea what the fuck they're talking about. And no, not all emo bands wear makeup and feathered hair. The wave of emo groups in the early aughts with bands like MCR or Fall Out Boy or From First to Last that had that aesthetic visually look very different from the origin bands of emo like Rites of Spring or Gray Matter or Embrace. Also gotta get to Teenagers, Famous Last Words, and the one I'm betting you'd recognize almost immediately, I'm Not Okay(I Promise)

Early post! This was a great song by a TWO hit wonder. Anyway, I was going thru some of your old reactions and one was your Rush 2112 reaction, where you were both blown away by them. Anyway, there was an American 3 piece band (Grand Funk Railroad) that was not progressive but still impressive. Please check out their live version (from 1969) of their song “Inside Looking Out”.
