Eric Burdon is one of the most underrated singers imo. This song is most definitely a classic but if you research his back story I think you will appreciate this even more. He had a horrible childhood and the fact that he survived and went on to become a legend is beyond belief. Just so awful… but he came out on the other side. ❤️Great reaction guys! Love it! The house of the Rising Sun is believed to have been a New Orleans bordello. The song dates way back, with the earliest known recording, under the title "Rising Sun Blues", being released by Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Forster in 1933. The Animals discovered the song via Bob Dylan's version on his first album. The "ball and chain" reference is not to the narrator going to prison, but to him returning to a lifestyle he knows is destructive -- with the ball and chain representing his addiction to gambling, whores and alcohol. That's what the "one foot on the platform / one foot on the train" lines are about, the narrator making a choice to return to a life they know is bad for them. Many versions, including Dylan's, have the narrator as a woman, in which the return to New Orleans at the end can be seen as her making the choice to return to a life of prostitution.

The Animals were part of the so-called British Invasion of the mid - to late - 60s. Bands and acts like The Beatles (arguably the biggest of the bands), the Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Animals, The Zombies, Herman's Hermits, Gerry and The Pacemakers, and more almost too numerous to mention. They were all either comprised of war babies or boomers, playing to the young and upcoming boomer generation (born from '46 to '64). Some of the best pop/rock music ever made.

Epic! "The House Of The Rising Sun" was a number one hit in the US and the UK for The Animals in 1964. This song ruled the golden oldies stations I used to listen to on the AM radio back when. The Animals were part of the "British Invasion" that followed Beatlemania. I think you'd dig the groove of their song "Don't Bring Me Down" along with their version of Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". They're also known for the songs "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" and "It's My Life" and the gritty "When I Was Young". Their singer was named Eric Burdon (and he's still alive and touring). He joined the Southern California funk rock band War after The Animals broke up and recorded the superfunkalicious anthem "Spill the Wine" in 1970. After Burdon left, War went on to define the sound of the seventies with such songs as "The World Is a Ghetto", "Slippin' into Darkness", "The Cisco Kid", "Why Can't We Be Friends?", "Low Rider", and "Summer".

The first version of this I ever heard was by Dolly Parton, on her 9 to 5 album. I like it as well as this one, but that might be bias from hearing it first. Eric Burdon’s vocals are incredible.

@@jgsrhythm100His version is interesting. The tone and the particular lyrics he used make it seem like a completely different song than others I’ve heard. I like it, but it just feels like a different song, rather than just a different version.

I think you guys pretty much got the meaning of that song right on the money. It’s My Life, We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, Sky Pilot and Monterey are just a few of the Animals great tunes.

This is an iconic song. Eric Burdon's voice is extroadinary. Also this band went on to dicover Jimmi hendrix , bring him back to UK and promote him, which i know you will appreciate. Love your comments about the bands of the time , you should also check out Cream: white room and badge, and the yardbirds for your love and the original version of dazed and confused , to understand how music developed during that time. The yardbirds had three of the great guitarists eric clapton , jeff Beck and Jimmy Page in their lineups. they eventaully morphed into led Zeppelin. You still need to do more led zeppelin - but you are always entertaining!!

Both of you were so close about the lyrical meaning of the song! However, I believe the "ball and chain" referred to in the song is that of marriage, not incarceration. The House of the Rising Sun, historically, was a brothel and gambling parlor in New Orleans. The main character in the song is relating that he followed his father's example of gambling and dodging his responsibilities until he got a girl in the brothel pregnant. Instead of continuing in the ways of his father, thereby creating another generation of the same, he is going to return and marry the girl...thereby ending the cycle. Great reaction as always guys!

Or addiction. The train is often a symbol for death so one foot on the platform and one on the train is the threshold of death. So after death the depravity of his (or her) life with be the nature of his hell.

Nun ur interpretation is interesting I'll look for it! Always thought ball and chain referred to crime! Where do u get the pregnancy reference?
@MrDekasOne
@MrDekasOne Год назад
I wouldn't necessarily say the ball and chain is a reference to going to jail the theme of the song is gambling the house of the rising sun is most likely a casino or gambling den the ball and chain is more likely a metaphor for his gambling addiction

This is mid-60's British rock. The song is an old traditional folk song recorded by many, many people, including Joan Baez. There are really two versions, one for women, one for men. Thus the House is either a brothel or a casino. Eric Burdon is a monster singer.

The house of the rising sun would most likely be described as a house of ill reput like there was in the Old West. A saloon with drinking and gambling and a brothel, all in one. If you have seen the movie Tombstone, you would get an idea as it is depicted in the movie a couple of times. Just not the brothel part but it is understood watching the movie.

Thanks so much for reminding me of this great song! I had it on randomly when play Red Dead Redemption 2 once, and it fit with that perfectly, old west vibe 😯 Smokey touched on points i didnt realise...what i got from it is that House of the Rising Sun was a brothel, and the story is about 200 years old, involving a girl?!. Leadbelly was one of the first to cover this myth/song, but Animals did the best version, hands down!! They are from Newcastle, northern England, and were up there with Beatles and Rolling Stones.

At this time the Beatles were on tour in the US. When they went back to London in the fall, the Stones needed a song to break in the US market. John and Paul gave them a Ringo song, I WANNA BE YOUR MAN and the stones took it to the top ten and broke into stardom.

the keyboardist got the royalties for the song, his name was listed first, and they only pay to the first name. Paul McCartney got pissed at all the songs that got indexed as Lennon/McC........ His name doesn't fit the register listing, so he got screwed out of a lot of earlier publishing money.

This song has a long and mysterious history. No one know exactly who wrote it, the earliest recorded version that I've found is the 1919 Woody Guthrie version titled House of the Rising Sun Blues. But even then it was considered a 'traditional' song and contained a few more verses. This version is now considered as THE standard regarding this song.
