The Beach Boys dropped their album Pet Sounds and everyone thought how great and ground breaking it was. A few months later the Beatles dropped Sergeant Pepper. What a great year for music.

Guys, there was definitely a mutual-love/fandom between The Beach Boys and the Beatles! The Beatles had their own upbringing with vocal harmonies and all that, but, at some point, they knew they would never be as pure as the Beach Boys at harmonies...but that didn't stop them from trying! Even so, The Beatles "Rubber Soul" was a huge influence on The Beach Boys, and they created Pet Sounds in response to Rubber Soul and the Beatles created "Sgt Pepper's" in response to Pet Sounds! They were vibing back and forth, bigtime!

They do sound a bit similar & they were good friends. Brian gave Jan & Dean the song he was working on, "Surf City" because he was more excited to work on his next hit, "Surfin' USA." Surf City became a big hit for Jan & Dean & Brian's dad was really angry that Brian had given them the song. Also on one of the Beach Boys Party albums, Jan & Dean were recording down the hall & Dean took a break & decided to drop in on the Beach Boys session & sing along for the recording. If I remember correctly, he had been told not to do this, by Jan, but they were all good pals, so he did it anyway, lol. So his voice is on the album, lol. I can't remember which song(s). They had more crossover stuff in their later years too...

The Beatles thought Pet Sounds was epic and inspiring. Brian Wilson is a genius. Great song writer, absolutely the gold standard of producers. Not one of those guys in the band ever put a toe on a surf board, or spent time hanging at the beach. The Beach Boys sang the best harmonies (arranged by Brian) in the business. They held their own on the charts while we had the mind blowing British invasion. Also, something to remember, we had ONE genre back in the 60's and early days of the 70's. Genre didn't come into play until FM was widely accessible. Most people had 1 or 2 rock and roll stations and everything that your parents didn't want to listen to was rock and roll. The Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, The Supremes, The Temptations, Elvis, even Barbra Streisand crossed over at times. So when you are struggling to fit the music of the 60's and 70's into a genre, just remember, we had 1 genre, rock and roll. It can be painful at times watching reactors try to shrink down a track and try to make it fit in a box that wasn't even in play at that time. Our genres at the time were Gospel, Country, Blues, Classical, Big Band, and Rock And Roll. That's how music was sorted back then, there were a few sub genre's, but they were pretty fluid. We were very educated in music because we were exposed to so many sounds under the rock and roll umbrella. We were also a concert culture generation. Everyone I knew growing up went to a concert at least twice a month. We saw so many bands it was crazy. I love watching y'all a lot. Keep up the good work!

"I don't know where but she sends me there." I love that line. Such a great song. This album, "Pet Sounds" was the Beach Boys' answer to the Beatles album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", which kicked EVERYONE in the ass when it came out. This song is specifically what Brian Wilson wrote when he, like many other artists, was set free by "A Day in the Life", and hearing how far they could go past the long-held traditions of songwriting. Songs could be like concertos or symphonies, with movements and orchestration and all kinds of oddness! YAY WE'RE FREE!!! It was quite a time, musically. :) Also, the Beach Boys did cover "California Dreaming", but not until about 10 years ago. You'd think they'd have done it long before, but they held off. It was originally a Mamas and Papas song. And "Wipeout" was not the Beach Boys, but the Surfaris (yes, really).

There was a recording band in L.A. called The Wrecking Crew, and just like the Motown label's recording band in Detroit, or the Stax label's band in Memphis, they played on most if not all of the hit records back in the day. The Beach Boys played their instruments live, but in the studio, The Wrecking Crew laid down the tracks because they played so well, so flawlessly and so fast. You should check out the movie they made about Brian Wilson's life, with Paul Dano as the younger and John Cusack as the older: Love and Mercy. Great film. It covers the creation of this album, which most of the band and the label didn't like but has become perhaps their magnum opus. Carl Wilson was one of the best vocalists of all time. Other Beach Boys songs: "Little Surfer Girl," "In My Room," "Surfin' Safari," "Help Me Rhonda," "Little Deuce Coupe," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "God Only Knows," "Sloop John B," "I Get Around," "Catch A Wave," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Don't Worry Baby," "Barbar(a) Ann," "California Girls," and "Little Saint Nick." "Wipe Out" was covered by the Boys, but originally by The Surfaris. Ditto "California Dreamin'," but that was The Mamas and the Papas.

Brian Wilson is a genius, he could hear all the words, music and harmonies in his head when he wrote...his father was their manager and was a real prick. He hit Brian across the head once and left him deaf in one ear. Later he sold the rights to all of their music behind their backs and took great pleasure in telling Brian who was devastated. Brian most definitely is on the spectrum and found touring very difficult and stopped for a long time. He took the tragic death of his brother Dennis, who was the one who knew Manson, really hard and never really got over it. He met a girl while he was out one day and then was basically held prisoner in his home by his 'psychiatrist' who had him on massive amounts of pills. He ended up being rescued by the girl who snuck into his house and his maid showed her all the pills the guy had him on and she contacted his brothers to come and help him. As far as I know they're still a couple. Oh and the psychiatrist wasn't even one and was just basically ripping him off.

9:17 they didn't name themselves the Beach Boys. They were named the Pendletones (a play on the Pendleton shirts that were popular within SoCal beach culture at the time). When they recorded their first single "Surfin'", the management of Candix Records printed the labels as the Beach Boys unbeknownst to the band members - they didn't know until they actually saw the records, by then it was set in stone.

Charles Manson was mad at Dennis Wilson for taking one of his songs and turning it into "Never Learned Not To Love, " released in 1969 which is actually quite good. Dennis got music producer Terry Melcher (son of Doris Day and a producer of The Byrds) to audition a couple of Manson's songs, but in Manson's view, Melcher reneged on his promise to produce his songs. Not coincidentally, Sharon Tate and four others were brutally murdered in the house owned by Melcher.

Dig that theramin! It sounds like you might be getting "California Girls" mixed up with "California Dreamin'". The Beach Boys peaked in the mid-sixties, but their music could still be heard everywhere you went in California in the seventies. They recorded dozens of classic songs about girls and cars and surfing, filled with catchy hooks and wonderful harmonies. And you've only begun to scratch the surface of their music so far. When you're ready for more from them check out "Don't Worry Baby" (1964), "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (1966), "I Get Around" (1964), "Help Me, Rhonda" (1965), "Surf City" (1963), "Catch a Wave" (1963), "Fun, Fun, Fun" (1964)... And for instrumental surf rock, check out classics like "Walk, Don't Run" by The Ventures (1960), "Pipeline" by The Chantays (1962), "Miserlou" by Dick Dale (1962), "Wipe Out" by The Surfaris (1963), "Surf Rider" by The Lively Ones (1963) and dozens more. The Ventures took their sound to the next level in 1964 with "Exploration In Terror", "Fear", and "He Never Came Back". Twilight Zone stuff there. Trippy.

Per wikipedia, the Beach Boys did do a cover of California Dreamin'... in 1986, long after they'd faded from chart prominence. Good Vibrations was released as a single and was supposed to appear on the follow-up to Pet Sounds called Smile, but that album ended up being a production hell and was released in a cut down form called Smiley Smile. A more true to the text version of Smile was eventually released called The Smile Sessions, and the opening track, Heroes and Villains (sometimes titled Our Prayer/Gee/H&V due to having an extended intro), is an excellent example of how Brian Wilson was trying to innovate songwriting and recording.

I was a schoolgirl when this came out. I first heard it on the radio as I was leaving for school and I just could not turn it off - missed the bus and got into terrible trouble but it was worth it. I was blown away! Couldn't stop talking about it when I got to school.

You might be thinking of "California Girls" by the Beach Boys. To my knowledge, they never covered "California Dreaming" But they and The Mamas and the Papas definitely rock those incredible harmonies and were big around the same time. Actually, the 80s group Wilson Phillips is made up of daughters of members of the Beach Boys and Mamas and the Papas. So they do have that one link.

the group recorded “Never Learn Not to Love,” on the b-side of their “Bluebirds Over the Mountain” single. the song was once known as “Cease to Exist,” and was originally penned by Charles Manson.

Pet Sounds and Smile are two absolute museum quality masterpieces! Another testament to the ability of humans and what the mind can create. Brian Wilson is one of the greatest musical minds we’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing 🫶🏻

Also....California Dreaming, The Mama's And The Papa's. And the beach music was a niche that Brian Wilson saw and filled. None of those guys were surfers, but they knew surfers and listened to how passionate surfers were about their sport. Brian started writing and arranging filling that void. He was a very smart guy that recognized a hole in the market and filled it. Unfortunately, The Beach Boys were stuck in that music because they were good at it. The industry wouldn't let them do anything else. Wipeout wasn't one of theirs, BTW. If you ever listen to the Beach Boys again, listen to the harmonies, they are exquisite.

There was a music genre in the '60's called "The California Sound" and they, as well as the Mamas and Papas, were from CA.

Their early music was more of the "Surf Rock" that you're speaking about. "Surfin USA" was their breakout hit, "California Girls" was another. Some of my favorites in that genre that I think you would enjoy are: "I Get Around" and "Fun Fun Fun". I totally love "Don't Worry Baby" and "Darlin'". Good Vibrations was when they were growing out of the surf phase, a little more psychedelic, and Kokoma wasn't until the 80's. Sloop John B was an old Bahaman folk song but their version is super cool.

The Beach Boys were technically considered surf music, but Brian Wilson carved out a different niche for their group (and a few impersonator type bands made soundalike music), but if you really want to try surf rock, check out: Dick Dale and the Dell Tones (Miserlou is his most famous, thanks to the Pulp Fiction soundtrack), the Surfaris (Wipeout), The Shadows (Apache), the Ventures (Walk Don't Run), or the Bel-Airs (Mr. Moto).

You need to check out "The Wrecking Crew". They are studio musicians that were used to record many of the greatest hits you hear. That is probably why a lot of groups lip synced their appearances on TV back in the day.

In case no one has mentioned this yet, I think as a kid you were conflating two songs -- California Dreamin' by the Mamas and the Papas, and California Girls by the Beach Boys. The second one has the chorus "I wish they all could be California girls..."

The Beach Boys mostly sang about surfing, girls and cars. Funny though because Dennis the drummer was the only actual surfer but surfing became HUGE in the 60's. It was not popular before that decade.

The Beatles and the Beach Boys were very aware of each other and each felt pressured to up their game because of the success of the other. It was a competitive form of mutual respect. The Beach Boys first strayed from surf rock into car club music. Ultimately, Brian Wilson created a pretty wide swath of popular music.

The Beach Boys have a kind of progression that gets missed when taken out of time. The Beach Boys was three brothers a cousin and a friend. They were also pushed on by an abusive father. The genius of the band was Brian Wilson. He wrote the early songs (but not Kokomo, which I hate). The beach thing was a gimmick they thought (correctly) would sell. Only the drummer was actually a surfer. So you get all of the surf songs, but Brian Wilson was not a fan of writing it. So he switched to writing about cars, and then girls. But ultimately he got tired of writing for teenagers altogether so he sent the band to tour Japan, and recorded the album Pet Sounds (except for the vocals) without them. Instead of surfing this album is about marriage and the meaninglessness of life without the person you love. As others probably mentioned, Paul McCartney heard Pet Sounds and decided the Beatles had to up their game. But the rest of the band was not happy, and the sales were way down. Good Vibrations was supposed to be for the next album, and it was ahead of its time in terms of multi-tracking. It was supposed to be part of a concept album about americana, but Wilson had a mental breakdown, and the album didn't actually get finished until the 90s. This was the last of their songs to make their greatest hits, until Kokomo. I love Odyssey and Oracle, but that came out two years after this song. Just a sign of how ahead of its time this song was. As for California Dreaming, that is the Mamas and Papas. You are probably thinking of California Girls.

Great reaction guys!! Such a vibe of a song (pun intended). The Beatles definitely took part of their sound, especially the harmonies, from The Beach Boys, as with The Everly Brothers! Imitation is the highest form of flattery. The sounds on this track are still as groovy as when they came out. Highly suggest the song Don't Worry Baby as the next Beach Boys reaction! Cheers!
