The Doors was pretty unique. You combine rock, blues and jazz elements and give the voice of a poet singing blues based lyrics and that's pretty much what you get. The keyboardist alternated between keyboard and organ, creating unique textures to their songs. Robbie and Densmore provided a solid backing on the songs. If you want more, most of the albums with Morrison you really can't go too wrong with. Light my fire ( full version), People Are Strange, Riders on the Storm, break on through are all great fjr a start. You could do lyric analysis on some, but just getting caught up in the music is cool too.

The Doors have many "psychedelic" type songs. Roadhouse Blues leans into the blues pretty heavy, like about 1/3 of their songs. While all their songs have a certain feel, there is still a great variety of sounds. Their first two albums are pretty trippy (self titled and Strange Days) but by L.A. Woman, you got heavy blues influences.

Ray Manzarek plays the piano/organ/bass. Robbie Krieger- Guitar. John Densmore-Drums. Jim Morrison Vocals but they say he can play the harmonica. They were known to bring in session musicians on almost all of their albumsto fill in instrumentals, may have done so here. Still one of the greatest rock songs ever. Jim never whipped it out. He _pretended_ to do that at a show in Miami, which the cops (oh, there were cops there) decided to take as real and busted him. Thus came the ultimate downfall of the band. But he didn't actually do it. Jim had recently been to a performance by The Living Theater, a New York experimental theater group that used nudity to shock the audience out of complacency. He was electrified and inspired by them, but he knew perfectly well he couldn't do the same. So he came up with the idea of faking it, and the footage from that evening still exists - you can hear him taunting the audience while he does some sleight-of-hand involving his leather jacket: "Did you see it? Did you see it?" It was crazy, and not a good idea. As to their style, they were a mix. Obviously a rock band, but what does that mean? They played blues, ballads, psychedelia, even a bit of music hall. Like any good band, they could play whatever was required by the song. They could go from gentle ("Indian Summer") to funky ("Roadhouse Blues") to summer ("Hello I Love You") to psychedelia ("Not to Touch the Earth"). The one connecting thread is darkness - the Doors were not a sunny band. They (along with the Stones) were the shadow side of the hippie era.

On the topic of Jim Morrison getting arrested for whipping it out: He was charged with exposing himself and "open profanity" in front of 12,000 fans during a show in Florida but Jim and the band deny that it happened. The guitarist for the Doors, Robby Krieger, pointed out that "500 photos were entered as evidence at the trial and not one showed anything of the sort. I think it was all very politically motivated. People were running for office, so we were a good target." Morrison was fined and given jail time. He appealed but the case was still unresolved when he died. During another show, this one in New Haven, CT, Jim Morrison became the first rock star to ever be arrested onstage during a gig. According to Ray Manzarek (the Doors' keyboardist), Jim was making out with a girl in the backstage showers before the show but was interrupted by one of the police officers who was there to work security and protect the band. The cop, who didn't know the band or what they looked like, didn't recognize Morrison and ordered him and the girl to leave. Morrison refused and the cop maced him. Afterwards, the manager informed the cop that the guy he maced was the lead singer of the band. The cop apologized to Morrison but Morrison was mad bc, as Manzarek described his attitude, it was "Okay, if you're famous, you don't get maced. If you're just a kid making out, then you're gonna get it." Later, during the actual show, there were cops all around the stage, working security. The very anti-authoritarian Morrison, still mad, changed the lyrics to "Backdoor Man" to talk about what happened and said to the crowd, "A little blue man, in a little blue hat, a little blue pig. Because I'm famous, I wasn't gonna be maced. But I'm just like you guys, if they do it to me, then they'll do it to you." The cops immediately responded by coming onto the stage and stopping the show. They arrested Morrison mid-performance and took him into custody, charging him with inciting a riot, indecency, and public obscenity. The crowd, angry at the incident, poured out into the streets and did start a mini-riot, leading to 13 more arrests. So, really, it wasn't that Jim and the Doors were "shock rockers" or trying to do shocking things, it was that they were part of that 60s anti-authoritarian scene where, along with others, they were breaking the norms of the older generation and pushing back against what they saw as the heavy-hand of the authorities. You can hear some of that vibe in songs like "Five to One," where Jim sings lyrics like "The old get old and the young get stronger / May take a week and it may take longer / They got the guns but we got the numbers / Gonna win, yeah, we're takin' over."

I went through a big Jim Morrison and the Doors phase when I was in college in the 80s, biographies, his poetry, art, music, I had a door size black and white poster of Jim on my door. Finally we get to my favorite member of the 27 club. The Doors were not shock rock at all but Jim himself could be incendiary, provocative and so on. One of the most famous instances is their appearance on the Ed Sullivan show where they were set to play the single "Light My Fire". The producers asked them to change the lyric "Girl we couldn't get much higher" to "Girl our love could go no higher". Jim said he would but then sang the correct lyric anyway, staring down the camera as he did. They were not invited back. And Jim exposing himself on stage only happened once in France, if memory serves. This one is definitely their bluesiest, L.A. Woman being a close second. Also gotta get to Alabama Song(Another Whisky Bar), Peace Frog and my favorite, Love Me Two Times.
@matthewdrake4385

The indecent exposure incident happened in Florida, not France. Though France is where Morrison is buried. And I always thought the line was going to be " girl, we couldn't get much better" or something similar. Pretty spot on otherwise.

The Doors were primarily psychedelic rock/acid rock with heavy blues and jazz influences. "Roadhouse Blues" was their most overtly bluesy song though "LA Woman" also has some of that, especially in the verses. They also did a cover of a classic blues song by Willie Dixon called "Backdoor Man." "Light My Fire" has a little more of the 60s psychedelic rock/pop sound, but a lot of their other songs are harder to categorize. They really had their own sound going on that was a mix of a lot of things and had a different mix of those things from song to song. If you really want to get the full-on trippy Doors experience, check out their magnum opus, "The End." It's a dark, psychedelic journey that features an Indian/raga type of vibe along with Morrison's poetic and philosophical lyrics that eventually dip into a spoken word section that was a little shocking to some at the time (though, as usual, people misunderstood what he was actually trying to say). Some other great songs that you might enjoy from them would be "Break On Through" (their first single and one of my personal favorites), "Five To One" (which has kind of a revolution vibe), "Not To Touch The Earth" (another of my favorites and, according to Jim's gf, the song he was listening to obsessively the day before he died), "Wild Child," "When The Music's Over," and "People Are Strange." Btw, the harmonica on "Roadhouse Blues" was played by John Sebastian from the Lovin' Spoonful. Apparently, Jim Morrison wanted to play it and they let him try but he wasn't very good so they called in Sebastian. Also, the Doors is a four-piece band - Morrison on vocals, Ray Manzarek on keys, Robby Krieger on guitar, and John Densmore on drums - and didn't have a bass player (Manzarek played the basslines on the keyboards). On "Roadhouse Blues," though, they brought in blues guitarist and singer Lonnie Mack to play bass.

The Doors are a ROCK band. Simple. They do incorporate blues, jazz, jazz fusion, psychedelic and other worldly elements into their sound of course and The Soft Parade is a more 'progressive' pop album in a way but at the centre of their centrifuge is Jim's wistful Rimbaud inspired jams and poetry. Ray Manzarek played keys/organ/piano with one hand and mostly played keyboard controlled bass (!) with his other. Check out Break on Through , Light my fire, The End, When The Music's over, Moonlight Drive, so many great ones

If you now think you've got a grip on the style of music of The Doors, you're mistaken, there is no pigeonhole for this immense group. Psychedelic, magical realism, and such amazing words. Strange days is the definition of psychedelic. My eyes have seen you is astonishing. The atmosphere of Horse Latitudes, jaw dropping poetry set amongst the most disorientating unnerving soundscape. Wasp radio is an utterly tripped out story with a backbeat narrow and hard to master. They were out their on their own and we will never see their like again.

Great reaction guys! I was going to make a suggestion but all you have to do is read the comments and they’re all listed, however, L.A. Woman, Riders on the Storm, Soul Kitchen, Crystal Ship, Light My Fire, Peace Frog, to name a few.

"I woke up this morning and i got myself a beer. The future's uncertain and the end is always near." Words of wisdom from Jim Morrison, aka Mr. Mojo Risin' and The Lizard King. The Doors lineup is: Ray Manzarek - Keyboards, John Densmore - Drums, Robbie Krieger - Guitars and Jim Morrison - Vocals and Harmonica sometimes. Five years, that's all we got. RIP Jim and Ray.

John Sebastion (of Lovin' Spoonful) came in and played harmonica for this track. For album credits, he used a different name because of contractual obligations with another record company. He also joined them onstage to play Maggie M'Gill. (Listen to The Doors Live at the Felt Forum.)

Makes me so glad that younger people are discovering the Doors music. Pure creative expression that came from the sous of each of these four guys. There have been FANTASTIC bands of all genres since then, but none of them captured the spirit of the times like the Doors did. Maybe NWA with their first album comes close.

Too many great songs by them to list, but I personally love 20th Century Fox, light my Fire and Soul Kitchen. You really can't go wrong with any Doors song though.

The Doors were considered shocking after the performance of The End with it's Oedipal lyrics .

Hey, my first listen, you guys obviously enjoy a groove, I’m 62 and happy to see youngsters enjoy. They are quite versatile. Check Peace Frog and differently, Riders on the Storm, also Cars hiss by my window. Good luck with the posts.

I believe Jim is the harmonica player, only because I've seen it in videos from shows and t.v, The Doors don't use a bass player, the keyboardist uses a synthesized bass, as well as piano, in all the songs, not just this one, I heard The Doors at home all my life, but really lasered in on them in high school too, from around 84 on, My friend gave me a tape, called Jim Morrison, an American Prayer, 1979. Not sure how true it is, but shortly before his death, in a drunk and creative burst, he broke into the recording studio the band had been hammering out new songs in, and he played the master and started reading and ab-libbing his own poetry and random song lyrics over the tracks, he didn't have the bands permission to use the material, but its pretty epic. No idea what any of the track names are.

Actually, Lonnie Mack played bass and John Sebastian played harmonica on this track. They did use session bassists for the last couple albums.

Two things fellows Ray manzarek was a beast on the piano and organ also Jim Morrison was drunk and high all the time falling off the stage throwing up total mess but the man could sing when he was sober and if you notice in their music there is never any background vocals straight up him glad you enjoyed it check out back door man

I love The Doors as a teenage metalhead in the '90s, and I still listen to them from time to time. I hope you'll check out more by The Doors. And yes, you should watch the movie. Greetings from Germany

Jim Morrison was a wild man indeed, lived a hard rockers lifestyle. This is one of my favorite songs from them, just a nice groovy blues tempo. Nice reaction!
