What Chapman said about the song : "It very generally represents the world that I saw when I was growing up and Cleveland, Ohio, coming from a working-class background, being raised by a single mom and being in a community of people who were struggling. Everyone was working hard and hoping that things would get better. It wasn't directly autobiographical. I never had a fast car. It's a story about a couple and how they are trying to make a life together and they face various challenges."

The ending of the song where she sings about the man in her life staying "out late at the bar, see more of your friends than you do of your kid. I'd always hoped for better, so take your fast car, and keep on driving" I've always taken as her taking control of her life and kicking a deadbeat out. The last line I've always seen as directed at the listener telling us that we've got a choice. Get busy living, or get busy dying. The time to change your life for the better is right now. Love Tracey Chapman. I've been listening to her since this album came out. She's a national treasure that too few people know about.

Tracy Chapman just won a Country Music Award for Song of the Year for Fast Car, 35 years after she debuted it in 1988. Luke Combs did an excellent cover that went to #2 on the mainstream Billboard Top 100 and #1 on the Country charts. This song still has power all these years later.

I think when you said 'there's no fast cars' that's more astute than you may have realized - the fast car to take them away is a pipe dream, something to hope and strive for but the reality is that the character's existence is poverty and desperation, with small likelihood of escaping their situation

Didn’t they go to the city? She eventually got a well paying job but her man never did… spent all of his time drinking with his friends (she says something about how he sees his friends more than he sees his kids.) So yeah by the end she was like, get your shit together or get out. This song makes me cry for some reason… the desperation in her voice just gets to me 😢

To me, even though this is a sad song, it's also so full of hope. 'City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped round my shoulder. And I had a feeling I could be someone.' It can be uplifting too. Of course things don't turn out just the way she'd hoped but still, at the end she made a life for herself. Had a good job and was able to take care of her kids. But more importantly she learned to be independent. She broke the cycle of co dependency. At the end, she's telling him to leave if he's not going to contribute (emotionally/financially) to what she built. She recognizes she doesn't need him and his fast car.

This song and album came out in 1991, same year as Nirvana never mind and pearl jam 10 and the first RATM album, and it fit a time when there was a lot of pain and poverty in the US that artists were describing and Chapman was commenting on that pain. It's uncanny that you talked about the "Mandela Effect". The first time I ever heard Tracy Chapman was at the Nelson Mandela 70th birthday tribute concert at Wembley Stadium, London in 1988. She came on for two different segments while they were resetting the stage between massive musical acts and performers. It was just her and her guitar. I'd never heard of her before, but I went and bought her album the first chance I got after that. She was amazing (and still is).
@catherine140864
@catherine140864 8 месяцев назад
Yes. Me too! It was broadcast on TV - she was unknown in the UK and it was such an impactful performance sandwiched between big name performers. I've never forgotten it (although after all these years I remembered it as happening at Live Aid). The audience at Wembley was restless, but she silenced them with her guitar, voice and presence. I also bought her debut album based on that performance. She also reminds me of Joan Armatrading as mentioned by someone else, who is also fantastic.

Such a fabulous song that has aged like a fine wine. I still remember hearing this in the UK when it first came out as a single way back in 1988 when I was only 15. Being as young as I was then, still at school and having a relatively nice upbringing I didn't fully understand or appreciate the hardship life can hit you with, financial and relationship difficulties. Don't get me wrong, I'm a working class guy and my Dad worked 12 hours a day sometimes 6 days a week to provide for us, while my Mum was raising 4 of us and still working jobs part time on top of that too. But the brutality of life hadn't dawned on me at that age. But over the years and being 50 now I've experienced what life can throw at you and how much of a struggle it can be. So when I was young I liked the tune of this song, but the lyrics mean so much more to me now. That whole debut album Tracy did back in the late 80s is fantastic. So grounded, mature and wise in her lyrics, considering she was still relatively young at the time. I think she was only around 24 when this came out. "Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution" is another fabulous song from this album if you haven't heard it already.

You have to watch her performance of this song in the Wembley Stadium 1988...she was an unknown artist at that time that had only played in bars and pubs before, but was invited to play at the Nelson Mandela birthday concert there...she played pretty early, and later, when Stevie Wonder had technical problems, the organizers of the concert sent her out again to entertain the crowd while they were trying to fix the problem, and she stunned the crowd with her performance...shortly after, the song became a huge global hit🙂

the song ends with her kicking him out because the guy essentially became her dad. he never got a job and just drank and hung out with his friends. so instead of her leaving the situation like her mom did, she kicked the guy out and continued her life with her kids. as the song progresses, she upgrades her life, while all the guy has going for him is his fast car. he never tries to improve his life.

She was talking about her dad in the beginning, but then she meets a boy with a fast car and she wants to make a new better life with him, but he repeats the cycle, and at the end she's like 'you're lazy and you're not there for the family, so keep on driving'. She's back on her own raising their kids alone trying to make it to a better place...that's how I've always interpreted this ending. Christian Kane has a great cover of this as well.
