Raptors-Celtics Game 3 ALL-DEFENSE Breakdown: How Toronto saved their season with lockdown D & OG

The Raptors were locked in defensively this game, with OG, Siakam, Gasol, and Lowry all stepping up in a huge way. OG and Lowry both played over 45 minutes and helped carry the team to a gritty win punctuated by OG's incredible buzzerbeating 3. OG was amazing in this game. Even without the game winner, he was astronomical in the win. OG has been the most consistent player this whole series

Shoutout to Lowry for another classic performance. He looked amazing in this one from wire to wire, and did so much on both ends to get this win. FVV with 25 points as well, and even Siakam had a good game despite his first half offense looking rough. Gasol, despite his 3pt shot leaving him, has looked really solid defensively in G2 and G3. And OG...he was cool.

Siakam didn’t play that great, he did score in the second half but still he doesn’t look like himself at all and the shot selection has been poor. But the defensive error he made at the end basically cost us the game and was extremely lucky OG bailed his ass our hard.

There is no denying that Siakam hasn't looked great offensively, but he's been playing all-defense level D in the bubble, and without that the Raptors would have lost by double digits. I'm not killing him for that mistake at the end of the game. That was a great pass, and all the players made a bunch of mistakes throughout the game. Have to play a little better all around (mostly offensively) so that it doesn't come down to a single possession like that.

Their defense has not failed them in this series, but their shooting percentage has been AWFUL. Not sure why they feel more rushed trying to take those mid-range and three point shots, but the ones they normally sink are just bouncing off the rim. And credit to the Celtics, they have attacked Siakam and VanVleet, taking away their strengths and keeping close coverage on them, although I keep seeing a number of reach-ins and defensive fouls that have not been called. And that frustration is leading them to make bad plays trying to draw the foul as they go to the rim. Kemba has been able to *just set his feet to take some of those charges, although I'd say some of them would have been blocking fouls if these games were being played outside of the bubble. Game 4 everyone is going to be coming out swinging, and the Raptors have GOT to start making some of those wide open shots that they've been taking and missing. They were able to force the Celtics into 6 consecutive turnovers and 0-9 from three in the fourth quarter, which kept the game within reach, but the last second heroics are not the best way to close out the win. Get those rebounds, limit the turnovers, and try to get out running for the fast break points. Don't let Boston dictate the pace!
@TooMuchHoops
@TooMuchHoops 4 года назад
Yeah, the Raptors have looked bad offensively. Big time credit to the Celtics, because they're playing some pretty fantastic defense, doing things similar to what the Raptors do, in welcoming guys like Serge and Gasol to take outside shots, and trying to stay glued to more deadly shooters. It seems like the Raptors are slowly figuring out where to get their shots, and if they can find a game to shoot even average from 3 they will be tough to beat. This series is a slugfest.
@TShorty929

Pretty good analysis, Celtics defence deserves credit as well. Brown has LOCKED pascal down, smart is doing a great job on the guards and honestly leading the Celtic defences adjustments. They’re forcing raps into a half court offence where without pascal executing it’s been rough for us. Gasol hasn’t been making his shots, Fred is being attacked, Lowry is doing everything he can through the defence, and everyone but OG and Ibaka have been missing everything. Norm needs more time when guards are struggling, he’s way too good to not have on the floor during or not during struggles
@TShorty929
@TShorty929 4 года назад
A good indicator is that the raps have gotten better each game even if marginal! Fingers crossed for tonight, limit Tatum and free throws, make shots, and execute in transition. Pascal NEEDS to show up if we want to win this series

It’s crazy how the whistle has changed from round 1 to 2 for sure. Guys got complacent and a bit entitled with the whistle so when things weren’t going their way they lost composure and blamed the refs for their missed layups. This is especially true for siakam, who seems to have really struggled with scoring through contact.
@thegagz

Good to see siakam still hasn’t lost a step on the defensive side of the ball despite his offensive struggles. Hopefully the momentum he created in the second half carries over for the rest of the series

matt thomas team defence has improved a lot & I'm gonna keep an eye on it. as a man to man defender he get beat of the dribble but he use to look lost in zone coverage. not he is becoming a lot better at rotating to the open man, closing out, and filling the gaps. if norm is struggling we should give him more minutes at the end of the 2nd quarter to see if he could be a spark plug for the team & generate some offence.

I turned off the audio at the dying seconds. I felt I’m gonna have a heart attack. Lol. But yeah I still have faith on the Raptors, too. I know they’re gonna find ways. They’re a very resilient team. They have the momentum now that would give significant effect on how they’ll play. I fervently believe they’re gonna WIN this series. Let’s go, Raptors! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 #WeTheNorth🏀

It makes me wonder if I've already watched it, so if each one had some uniqueness, I think it would help your channel get more views, which it deserves! Maybe start adding text to the thumbnail? Great analysis as always. What are your thoughts on the restricted rotation? What are your thoughts on Matt defence in the first half and do you think will see more catch and shoot shots for him?
@TooMuchHoops
@TooMuchHoops 4 года назад
I think they are destined to stick with 7-8 man rotation, with the 8th man getting very limited minutes. Matt Thomas was okay, but he wasn't able to get anything going offensively, which hurts his value a lot obviously. I think it's much more important for Norm to be solid than for the 8th man candidates to do anything.

Gasol's positioning is so elite, and his mobility is underrated IMO. He brings a lot to the table defensively, even if his offense has been uninspiring.

Honestly you just gotta slow him down cause you can’t completely shut down a player like him. I wanna see better defence against him cause he was blowing by everyone
@TooMuchHoops
@TooMuchHoops 4 года назад
Honestly, not a ton you can do, especially when he's on the floor with Tatum. Tatum is the bigger threat, so you have to load up to him, and try to deal with Kemba as well as you can in light of that. Chances are, one of those guys is gonna drop about 30, you just have to make sure it's not both.

Gasol shouldnt be out there chasing a guard, he is too slow, they will try that match again and again.
@TooMuchHoops
@TooMuchHoops 4 года назад
I disagree. Gasol is one of the best defensive bigs in the league, and occasionally trapping and whatnot is part of what makes Toronto's defense more dynamic. The Raptors play a very help heavy style, and even if guards get around him, Toronto does a good job of rotating and he easily finds another spot to make an impact on the possession. This was a very good defensive game from him, and the Raptors don't have a better option (Ibaka is much worse defensively).
