I just found this. I was 16 and 17 in '67. In the Fall of that year, I got a job at WCOH in Newnan, GA. We had block programming that included two hours of rock and roll from 8 to 10. I listened to Quixie in the daytime and stole stuff for my show in the evening. What a treasure this is.
I met the Cowsills at Hemisfair '68 in San Antonio Texas. They were lovely people, mom Barbara and older brother Bob posed with me for a snapshot and gave me an autographed album. I was 8 years old and will never forget their kindness.
I worked in San Francisco radio toward the end of Dr. Don's career. He had a limo that dropped him off at the station, then the car waited out front until Don's air shift was over. I drove by KFRC just to see the limo waiting.
I'm about to cry! My mother has the same tape and has wanted it converted for years. I bought a tape converter, but the old cassette is kaput. You've completely made her Christmas and my day! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING!!!!
no problem! It was the least I could do. As soon as I heard the CD i knew i had to preserve it, we dont have this kind of personality and character on the radio anymore. This recording is a nice little snapshot of that time and I love it
Later WQXI would morph into 94Q and hop over to FM. Those of us who were in our teen years in the early-late 70's remember Gary NcKee doing the morning radio show along with Red Neckerson and Yetta Levitt. We had Z-93(92.9) and 96Rock(96.1) as our go to stations in Atlanta back then for Pop/Rock music. I sure miss those days. Atlanta was a much nicer place to live then. Thanks for sharing.
Native Atlantan here, & I recall everything you're saying. Used to have an orange, black, & white 96Rock plate on the front end of my Olds Cutlass. Looked good. And yesss, Atl was a MUCH nicer place then!
I love the thought that there are people who understand the importance of such good-old memories for a very large Radio0Listening Fraternity that we all formed all through those decades .... thanks for preserving and uploading this rare recording....I am taken back to my 6yrs age....what a wonderful world when just music n dance kept our years flowing ! THANKS .
True, and it was such a wonderful time for those of us who grew up then. I was around 10 years old and alot of songs with hidden meanings and more grown-up lyrics were still fun as we were so naive. Like the song "Chewy, Chewy", lol. Once I reached my mid to upper teens, I realized how serious events were that occured during those times, and I think the music, the dj's, and the comedy kept those young ones of us into the magic of what the time was, without the war, politics, and social upheaval. I would give anything to be able to go back in time and to speak to the announcers and musicians as they were while I'm at my present age of 62. It would be cool to hear what their thoughts were, and their hopes for the country and the world were. One of my neighbors died 3 years ago, and he had fought in Vietnam. He had a head injury from the war and died from Alzheimer's Disease. I wish now that as a 20-something I would have made recordings of him, as he loved to tell war stories. Only 18 years older than me, it was like he lived in a completely different world. I miss him very much, and feel I missed capturing a part of history and the feelings of a man who had his childhood during the 50s, but grew up during a war that nobody seemed to understand
I was born in Frankfurt , Germany , and automatically became a USA citizen , because my pop was in The US of As 4th I.D. , and married my mom early 1956 , and gave birth of me late 3/1957 . I remember so many of these tunes on an iconic Philadelphia Radio Station of " Famous 56" WFIL . Gees, heard these tunes between 1962;to 1967 , but the tunes playing on this tape compilation , was late 1966;to , pretty much , all of 1967 . Unfortunately , the war in SouthVietnam was raging on .. This recording of this radio show is a telltale sign of the great music back then . Not the whatever is out now , Gees Please , it's horrible !
Holy crap this is Classic Radio as I remember it. Unbelievable. Too bad our MILLENNIAL gen doesn't even appreciate this vintage radio.....where it all began. Awesome. Thanks for posting
This is why I listen to most of these oldies but goodies on Siriusxm satellite radio. As a matter of fact I've been listening to SiriusXM satellite radio for 20 years and I still enjoy it!
I didn't run into Dr. Don Rose until 1977 when I moved to the Bay Area. After Corpsman School in SD. He called Sacramento, "Sacr-tomato." Stuck with me ever since. 🤣🤣
I believe this was a in studio produced aircheck. I think this was part of the “Cruisin’” series LP releases. From 1955 through 1967 they had a station for each year.
It sounds awfully clear for an AM Station, so it must have been an in studio air check (recording). BTW, great video; funny DJ and lots of hits...bravo
Correct.. This is from the Cruisin' 1967.. This was probably re-created like most, if not all, of the Cruisin' series.. an awesome collection!! i have them all..... 1955-1967 albums & 1955-1970 CDs.. **Don Rose (born Donald Duane Rosenberg; July 5, 1934 - March 30, 2005)**
I think this might be the Cruisin' 1967 album. Some things to note: 1. Dr. Don says it is Monday morning. The only time the Braves beat the Cubs by a score of 4-0 in 1967 was on May 3. May 3 was a Wednesday in 1967. That makes the newscast from Thursday, May 4. 2. Incense Peppermints was released on May 19, 1967. And while some of the records may not get played on oldies stations today, they were all very big hits. Even major stations played things that did not make it high on the charts -- we heard nothing like that which can be said of most of the Cruisin' series. 3. The jingle at the end did not go into anything else that was cut off. It would have either been cut early or we would have heard the beginning of something else. This is not to take away from the video. I remember Dr. Don from San Francisco and this accurately reflects his talent. It is just not an actual broadcast save for the news which was spliced in.
The Cruisin' albums were "staged" in the early 70s, they got older DJs to "recreate" their shows for record. This is not a real broadcast...but an incredible simulation, lol.
So RARE to find a complete broadcast. Air checks, snippets yes...But broadcasts with announcements, banter, commercials and complete songs...exceedingly rare! Thank you VERY much for posting this...Took me right back to 12 years old!
Thank you for posting this. I grew up in the San Francisco bay area and we all loved Dr. Don on KFRC. I met him one time and an RV and boat show Remote and he was as warm and funny in person as he was on the air, I was in email contact with him briefly before he passed away. Sure do miss him. but Dr. Don lives on in our memories. I often wonder if Sirius XM 70's on 7 could possibly play some old Dr. Don shows. That would be great. Anyway, thanks so much Hayden this is Gold!
thank you for watching! I wish I grew up listening to this era of radio, unfortunately 2000's radio i had to listen to was a lot more commercialized. Good hosts and personalities had to take a backseat to rapid advertisements. As soon as my grandpa showed me this recording, I knew I had to do my part and preserve it. Thanks for watching and thank you for the comment!
In between Atlanta and San Francisco. Rose was on WFIL Philadelphia...where one morning in early 1970 he played the Blues Magoos and outroed with "We ain't got nothin' yet...except an.F in English"
This is awesome. Untelescoped! I'm from Northern California and used to listen to Dr. Don on 610 KFRC. I was about 6 when this show aired. Great memories. Thanks!
When I got out of the Army in 1967 and worked for Lockheed Thats when I loved to listen to Don Rose. Being from South Georgia I loved WQXI and Don Rose
I bought a huge box of old open reel tapes about 30 years ago and a number of them had very old Dr. Demento shows on them before he was even doing The Funny Five. I think he was doing 10 at the time. I needed the tape for an archiving project so, I copied over all the songs I wanted from those shows and erased the tapes. About 15 years ago, I bought a bunch of tapes from people on e-Bay and some had some radio shows from a British, German or Polish radio station. I'm not sure which because the first jock spoke with a British accent and about half an hour in, the music suddenly became all polkas! A little whole later the jock was speaking German!! Other tapes I got sound like they're complete classical concerts professionally recorded and each one even has a page from the libretto listing all the tracks on the tape! Those, I still have! It seems a shame to just erase them without giving someone a chance to hear them. If this is from 1967, Dr. Don just said, 'Long-haired freaky people" which is a line from the 1970 song, "Signs" by The Five Man Electrical Band. How did he make that reference 3 years before the song was recorded.
Can't believe I found this I listen to it on qxi in 67 when I was eight mom and dad always listen to WSB but I was always changing the radio 2 wqxi used to go to sleep listening to it every night
Oh ! By the way remember "Judy In The Skies " laying on Phila., Pa.s " Famous 56" WFIL around late Oct.1967 , when I was 10 years ol . Unfortunately , my uncle was kia in the Central Highlands of SouthVietnam around me d-3/1968 @ the tail end of bloody ass TET nearly just over 10 days v-4 my 11th bday .
You learn something new everyday , and I though I was a expert on oldies , but I never knew that the aspiral Staircases " I Love You More Than Yesterday " was a 1967 hit. But , if you listen quite a few 1967 tunes / hits became hits again in 1969 ; there's a plethora of tunes of such in music .
If you google it was released and a hit in 1969. As many have pointed out this isn't an actual '67 radio broadcast. It got a release here in the UK but did nothing but then we didn't have pop stations over here till Radio 1 started 30 September 1967. Until then a couple of hours per week on BBC radio or you'd listen to pirate radio like Radio Luxembourg or those operating on ships broadcasting from international waters to get round UK regulations. The track was picked up sometime around 1972 by the soul scene here so it is well-known now by some people. It kinda fitted a pop-soul Motown feel. Jay & Techniques featured was also popular on the same scene in late 60's. Back then we probably played a lot of USA soul hits that got aired on your pop and R&B stations in the 60's but did nothing here except in soul music clubs. Nowadays after 50 odd years we're playing 45s that sunk without a trace in the USA !
There's something different in the sound of the songs. Like the songs are slowed down just a bit or the songs are speeded up just a little now days even in the cds. I like it.
Allentown' Pa.s own Jay and The Techniques tune heard it on Phila . , Pa. S WFIL " Famous 56 " ! Tune came out late summer 1967 when I was 10 yrs. old .
BTW, I have told a Dr. don style joke to my brother the other day. "My wife and I are taking some time off for a vacation and we are going to drive to the coast." My brother said "Don't get lost." In my best Dr. Don impersonation I said "Not to worry, my wife has a nose like a compass, I guess that's why my marriage is heading south!" Sound effects:(Mooooooo) (You've got a big, big mouth.)
Wait a minute ? There was a Dr. Don Rose on Philadelphia's *Famous 56 " WFI L ; are they both the same D. J.s ? Maybe Dr. Don Rose left Atlanta , Georgia by 1969 , and came to Philly .Pa..
Does anyone know where I can find any recordings featuring "Simon Trane" ? My father was quite fond of him. He just had Cancer removal surgery and I would love to surprise him. Thank you... 🙂
I've noticed they used to put a lot of reverb on the DJ's voices in the 60's for some reason. Sounds kinda weird, doesn't it? It's like they were broadcasting from the bottom of an empty swimming pool.
Thanks for this upload. It inspired me to create this set of circuits in Gran Turismo 7. There are now three parts planned. After America comes Europe and Japan. Hope my use of the recording is ok for you? Cheers! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BwWojL9v-8U.html
