RARE! 4K LIRR: M3 Front Window Jamaica to WEST HEMPSTEAD

While I was editing the plane ride going to Orlando, I got a call from a friend at the right time, and he said he got video on an M3 going to West Hempstead as he knew I was looking to get one. I've been trying so hard to get an M3 on this branch and I finally succeeded. Originally, a friend did this video for me and I wanna thank him very much for filming this for me as well as giving me rights to it! If he was not at Jamaica at the right time, this would not have been possible without him. As of now, I have M3 Front Window videos on Babylon, Ronkonkoma, Huntington, Hempstead, Long Beach, Far Rockaway, Brooklyn, Port Washington and finally, West Hempstead. All of the electrified branches are finished.
So for those that have been wondering to ask this question, "Can M3's go to and from West Hempstead?" The answer is yes, but appearing here nowadays is very rare and especially rare on the weekend when it is the scoot. The reason is because the substation by Malvern has issues dealing with excess amperage when an M3 leaves in either direction. If you exceed P1 on the power handle, the fuses overload and blow up, causing power to the M3's or 3rd Rail to shut off. The M1's also had this problem too, and the Railroad had to put a "Special Instruction" in that area to reduce the chance of it happening. They also tried to reduce the amount of M3's going down there, which is why getting one on this branch was so difficult for everyone. Eventually, it will be almost impossible to see another one on this branch as they get closer to retirement. Based on the amount of times I've tried to get one on this branch on the weekdays over the Summer last year, usually once in a while on Mondays or Wednesdays, #956 seems to be the most common one to get an M3, which in fact was in this video. I highly doubt anybody else would be able to get something like this ever again before they retire. Also, the audio at the last minute of the video was silenced somehow. Not sure what happened during editing so do apologize for that. Enjoy!

Just got around to watching this now, man that is the real stepchild branch. You could see there was a 2nd track in spots that was abandoned. Of course a long, long time ago it hooked up at CLP and to the Oyster Bay branch by Nassauj. This line could've been a main "intra-Nassau" route that never materialized. Those high tension power poles look ancient and should have been replaced by PSEGLI already. Unless they are the LIRR's responsibility but those look like consumer substations as well. Kind of surprised they're "allowed" on the "boutique" Babylon Branch and not using the Atlantic routing.

Yes. Finding an M3 on here is very hard because of the substation having issues.

@@Bivolari CLP - Country Life Press, by the former Hempstead Crossing. Would have connected to Oyster Bay branch at Nassau Tower, east of Mineola station. (Back in the fifties I took the Farewell to Steam railfan excursion which did follow that route from West Hempstead to Oyster Bay.)

Now that is rare! Thanks for sharing this, certainly an interesting perspective. I'm sure every railfan in the region is scrambling to get the M3 RFW videos before the cars are gone, which is looking increasingly soon.

I used to live in an apartment on Burns St. In Queens. (I think it was KG Area.) The building was on the south side the tracks I think. I remember Jimmy Breslin lived somewhere near by. His kid one one of the neighborhood kids This was still during that time in NY that Graffiti-pained train cars was seen as something like a Constitutionally-protected form of Free Expression. Of course that was also during that same time that people wore Bell-Bottoms, had big Afros and used a lot of Cocaine and Quaaludes. Anyway, We got used the regular noise soon enough, to the point that you somehow don't notice it. But any time we had visitors over, well, they sure noticed it.

I really enjoyed this video! I lived in Lakeview back in the 70s and I walked, biked and drove past this line on Woodfield Rd constantly. The ironic thing is I never rode on this line! When my family took the LIRR, we always caught it at Rockville Centre. Thanks for the ride!

Loved your video, thanks for posting it. It would seem the working track on that branch has reached the end of it's useful life. The ties look ancient, and the rails don't look well either.

Couldn't be happier man, I felt that way when I got a snapshot of a platform sign at all 124 stations to show that I was there and it took me 4 years and about 12 cameras!

also rare to see it go past the Montauk Babylon/branch. Usually the West Hempstead trains that go past Valley Stream travel via the Atlantic Branch used by Far Rockaway and Long Beach trains

Don't worry about the sound cutting out halfway through a video. I've had this occur when videoing train rides on suburban electric train lines here in Melbourne, Australia. Great video here, and good insight into trains outside New York's inner city area boroughs 👍👍👍👍✔️.

Nice video! I've seen LIRR Train #956 before but only with M7 sets. I can NOT say this enough. I will incredibly miss these M3s SO SO MUCH when they get to retirement. These trains have survived past 30 years old and I cannot believe these M3s are retiring so soon. I remember seeing ALOT OF M3s back in the good ol' days. I hope they save some of these M3s at a museum or at a yard. Also do you know when the LIRR will start testing the M9s and put them in to service ?

They have arrived in the United States and are being tested in Colorado. They should be on the property for testing by mid March beginning of April

I am on the Oyster Bay branch and thought it was the poor stepchild of the line. But the West Hempstead branch looks like it is one step above being an abandoned railroad siding. However, they have electricity and we do not.

The M3 has a “railfan” window which is why i think he said its a rare treat to get this view since the M7 and M9 dont have the window, so i think he took this from the window not the cab but i could be wrong

I rode an M3 on Tuesday February 20 2018 on my trip to Port Jefferson. It was the 11:15AM train from Mineola to Huntington. Sad to see that the retirement of the M3s are underway.

RadRoad Reversers I had a trip to montauk that day and I was surprised cuz when I head over to Jamaica station I rode a M7 to jamaica, then I rode the diesel to montauk and when I head back to Jamaica the I took a M3 back to valley stream. I got pretty surprised about that because I never rode all 3 of them in one day

I read that the LIRR is the oldest railroads still operating under its original Charter and hasn't gone through any reorganizations or anything. it was one time controlled by the PRR, whence why there are PRR signals. That horn sounds awful. why do the trains pull so far past the station before stopping?

The West Hempsted Line Is Mostley A Shuttle Line With Trains Runing From Valley Stream the stop before it becomes 1 track. Basicly this is one of these few trains that runs to jamicia and its logner to hold more passngers normaly the trains are much shorter its just the train is longer then the platform. Now there is a line east of ronkokokma that is littlery just track no 3rd rail no signles thats called the greenport branch that is a charter they were talking about

Not necessary. Plus the 3rd Rail ends in East Williston. It's kind of a side branch and not really a main one. I made a copy of the video to store in my hard drive as a reference.

MrMaster767 Thanks for another great video. What's with the signal light on the signal arm seen after diverging from the Babylon Branch? It looks like an old B&O signal. I don't recall seeing it on another LIRR signal let alone a PRR signal. Cheers

At 6:35? That's a Slow Approach Signal. That'll code you down to 15 for the diverge to West Hempstead or Far Rockaway.

@@MrMaster767 Thanks MrMaster767. The PRR signal system had a slow approach aspect of horizontal over diagonal for slow approach. I wonder why they didn't use that. BTW- I spent years flying the 767, does that figure into your handle? Cheers

Nice Video. If those yellow diamond-shaped signs are track speed limits, I think I saw one marked "80". Look at the right-or-way. It's flat. It's straight. Curves are gentle. 100mph could easily be handled.

There are no gates so yes, but concrete ties can usually withstand that type of speed. There would also be other regulations put into place before they consider that. 90MPH would most likely be the fastest they would allow

They will sometimes take track out of service and do speed tests with the new equipment, reaching speeds in excess of 100mph. As an aside, the speed signs aren't often accurate or in the right location. You really have to brute memorize the speed restrictions and not rely on any of those signs.

May have been used for freight or Track Cars but now, there is a set of tracks at West Hempstead to store them.

This line used to go further north with a junction at Country Life Press to Mitchell Field or Mineola, onward to Oyster Bay. Trains driving in opposite directions would need to pass each other.

This line in a nut shell is a remain of once was a much bigger line Back in the day the west hempsted line actualy part of oyster bay line as shown in this map www.lirrhistory.com/Images/1900LIRR.jpg and this map www.lirrhistory.com/Oct98/1963wf.jpg basicly up until the 60's this line was much more used then they cut it back and basicly this line for the past few years has been on and of at the risk of geting shut down but as Long island population grows it does not seem this line is going any time soon

@@subrailfn2940 Sure but no guarantees. Getting M3s ro West Hempstead is completely luck based. If an M3 is the only equipment available, they use it. If not, M7s.

Well, the first M9 won't be here for at least another year or less. When they arrive it'll be at least 2 years before you see an M9 in passenger service. And they will have cameras from day 1. They'll spend about 6 months testing them before putting anything into service. Then train everyone on them, THEN they'll begin retiring the M3s.
