Could this right-hand drive Autobianchi Bianchina van be a unique survivor? It's certainly packed full of charm. Think of it as a slightly posher Fiat 500 Nuova and you won't go far wrong. Straight-twin engine, non-synchro gearbox and very, very few frills. Still loved it...

What a cute little thing. Brings back sweet memories of my mum's 500s. We travelled with 4 people in it sometimes, my dad being 6ft2 and my sister and me sitting in the back seat as teenagers. You should've given the fam a lift to try it out 😂👍🏻

Thank you for giving me a smile on what's been a "down" day.💕 A family friend was a Fiat Dealer. His garden was (neatly) scattered with bits of Fiat 5 and 600. He helped keep our badly behaved 850 on the road.

I saw an 850 ragtop in San Rafael, California, within the past year or two. In an auto repair shop, of course. If nothing else, the return of Fiats that generally resemble these old ones, and the Disney/Pixar movie ‘Cars’ has made the 850s more likely to cause folks to wonder “What’s that?”

Definitely an interesting little car. Surprising performance from such a small engine. My lawn mower is 18 HP! It is interesting that Briggs and Stratton, who made my lawn mower engine, made a hybrid car in the 1980's using one of their 18 HP twin engines. They claimed that 18 HP is all you needed once you get a car up to cruising speed. Having an electric motor definitely helped performance but, if I recall correctly, you could just use the little gas engine. Anyway, fun to see some of these unique little cars.

I love this! My great grandad had a 1969 berlina, in beige with red interior! They stopped using it in 1980 circa but never sold it nor trashed it, so it remained in the house. In 2005 or so, my grandad decided it was time to restore it, so we did it! It was so funny looking, so cute! We sold it ten years ago or so to a collectionist who, I guess, still drives it!

This bring back a lot off memories....my father drove between ' 66 an mid ' 68, the " berlina F " version. The sound of that little engine, i never forget. One of my first driving experiences was...in that lite blue rumble car. 10 years old and i felt mighty proud. Man...times fly😣 Little anecdote: The heather handle , was under the rear seat and my 4 year younger brother did had the ( naughty), habit, to turn it always on....my parents complain always, it get so hot in the car, till they find out why🤣🤣🤣 It seems..the Berlina did have a more " luxurious ", dashboard The A112 ABARTH ....hallelujah, we did have fin with...70Hp😎

We took our Punto Cabrio to Auto Italia at Brooklands a couple of years ago, which was full of exotic supercars, but the star of the show was an Aautobianchi Bianchina Cabrio. It drew the crowds whereas the Maserati next to it was just another Maserati like all the others.

Hugely pretty car/van and colour scheme. Glad you mentioned the Primula as the original fwd car with end on box, yes as part of Fiat it was a ground breaking design, one they employed on the 128 ( before the 127 as you mentioned) which was voted Euro Car of the Year. To think now most if not all modern car manufacturers follow this design both in terms of saving manufacturing costs , as aided by Macpherson struts they can install the engine / gearbox/ front suspension/ brakes all in one manoeuvre, but also gives potentially more usable space in the volume of the car. Love the video , thought she sounded as well looked very sweet

Lancia Y10 is actually pronounced 'Lancia upsilon ten' :) - the 'Y' is not in fact the roman alphabet Y, but the Greek letter upsilon. Lancia as you know went through a phase of naming all their vehicles after Greek letters hence: Delta, Gamma, Beta, etc...
@miseMise971
@miseMise971 2 года назад
@Retired Bore Hah - quite right! However, Lancia's own English language promotional advertising referred to it as the "upsilon ten" :) unless you actually visited a dealer where everybody referred to it as a 'wy ten'. A number of car companies started out making bicycles. Rover and Humber are two I can think of and I think there are a few more. Puch and Peugeot also make bikes but I don't know whether they started out doing so before making cars.
@HubNut
@HubNut 2 года назад
Peugeot certainly did. Existed a fair while before the motor car.
@pdsnpsnldlqnop3330
@pdsnpsnldlqnop3330 2 года назад
Peugeot started with salt and pepper grinders and you can still get them today if you have a few hundred pounds spare. In general, everything started in a bicycle workshop. If you can make a bike you can make a car or a plane. The Wright brothers are the classic example but they patented everything and this held back the U.S. aeroplane business for a very long time, hence European plane makers were the innovators until war came along. Reliant is a name you need to add to your list. They called it Reliant because they bought everything from Raleigh and it was easy to change the branding and tooling to 'Reliant'. BSA - British Small Arms - also play in the British bikes to anything else story. If you can't afford to restore a classic car, restore a classic Peugeot bicycle from the 1980's. They pioneered an internal brazing technique that resulted in beautiful frames. Every one is a classic and just needs period correct NOS European parts from Weinmann, Rigida, Sachs Huret et al.

@pdsnpsnldlqnop3330 2 года назад
"Bianchi" as a bicycle brand is just a label owned by some vast conglomerate holding company rather than a distinct entity. For an automotive analogy think of MG. The "Bianchi" brand is quite easy, there is just that colour - celeste (is it?) - and there you go, premium product because it is in the Bianchi blue. They also do a chrome 'track' bike for the fixie crew. The brand is as Italian as MG is British. Yet people imagine that Italian craftsmen lovingly make their machine, in between two hour lunch breaks, a little bit of industrial action and the whole of August off. The whole box comes from the Far East but who cares, it is in THAT colour! And you thought only auto makers charged extra for paint.

@pdsnpsnldlqnop3330
@pdsnpsnldlqnop3330 2 года назад
@@simonhodgetts6530 Well, Italy has got no gas. So no carbon fibre. However, it could be like SiDi 'made in Italy' shoes where they stick the sole to the upper, put it in a box and slap on the label. With a bike, for it to be 'made' it is just final assembly. The frame is just a component. A "Bianchi" can be built in Italy from components from elsewhere, all sent to Italy. There is good reason to do this as the bike shops do the real assembly anyway, and, they can better match supply and demand with shorter time delays. Aluminium frames must be gone by now, never to be made in The West ever again. China has the jump on mass producing carbon fibre to a quality standard suited to the marketplace but they are getting expensive since it is a premium product from China, not cheap junk unless you pay for that 'quality' standard. We will see, but people buy cars that are 'British' but built by Germans in Eastern Europe. Or built by Chinese people in China. Right now Bentley is doing a different market to MG, Bianchi want to be following the 'Bentley' not 'MG' business model to go premium.

They were very popular here back in the day. There was also a bigger van version, with a taller roof, and a rolling shutter at the back. They were used by the state electrical company and the Italian postal service. They were also very popular with plumbers, decorators and any sort of artisan and/or handyman or repairer. If driven well they could easily exceed 25Kms on a liter of petrol!

If you ever get the chance to visit Italy, eg Lake Como, you’ll understand why these cars are so small. The Piaggio Ape vans were everywhere, 500’s crawling around the lake creating massive tail backs, which then led to lunatic drivers overtaking blindly. The small lanes in the towns necessitated these tiny cars.

Rev matching is a very useful skill for any driver of manual gearbox vehicles to have. If you ever lose clutch functionality, then that skill can get you home or to a garage. We had a Metro, 30 years ago, which had an awful hydraulic clutch with 3 hydraulic cylinders in the system, and air leaks were a constant problem which never was fixed successfully. I drove thousands of miles, often with almost no clutch. Scary if you don't understand double de-clutching, but almost no problem at all (except for starting from a standstill on an adverse gradient) if you have the skill.

10:53 "I'm not even sure what that is..." It's a plug-in light to use if the car breaks down at night. We had an identical one in our 1991 Lada Niva in Australia. I suspect that one in the Autobianchi is actually a Russian light. It is hard to read on my screen, but it looks like CCCP in the top left - which is USSR in the Russian alphabet. You unscrew the big cap and there is a long wire and plug tucked inside, with the 12 volt bulb in the centre.

As soon as I spotted those central levers I knew at once they're purpose. Immediately transported me back to a time of innocence when the sound of my sisters boyfriends Buick charging away was my cue to nip out side with the spare ignition key that apparently did not exist that I'd carefully secreted tucked behind my mums pressure cooker on the kitchen high shelf then onwards outside outbound to my sisters bright yellow Fiat 126 firing it into life with one yank of that little lever plus a little choke should it be frosty, then away, away where to? Who cares? Freedom at 15!! What a feeling! If only it could've been bottled. And then inevitably one day my furious mum caught me whilst arriving back home along with my sister who'd arrived home earlier than expected distraught not over me being an irresponsible underage driver but over the fact I'd used up most of the tank of fuel. Sorry for the digress. Great video HN

A friend of mine bought a survivor with only a tiny bit of rust in Italy: A Panoramica with glass behind the door. He painted it in its original grey color. It does not look as fancy as this one. But it is cute never the less. When me and my wife were young we nearly bought a Bianchina Coupe (with a vinyl roof that you could open). Unfortuanely it was missing to many parts. And was to rusty. There were even full convertibles. Super cute vehicles with tiny fins. For over ten years I saw a Bianchina in a junkyard it Tuscany. I loved to see it when we were driving on the Autostada. The junkyard is gone and the Bianchina as well.

Double de-clutching is a good practice to learn even if you are driving a car with a synchromesh gearbox. It means you extend the life of the synchromesh and, in a low powered car (especially in a hilly area), you maximise available power and conserve momentum. After all, "power, less is more". There is something so satisfying about rev-matching on the down change and feel the gears mesh smoothly.

What a cute little van. I'm wondering if you could swap a 126 engine/gearbox and brakes - it would make it a little bit dynamically better all round and more importantly, you would gain syncromesh on the top three gears. My mum used to have one of those and I'm pretty sure it had syncro because I don't remember her grinding gears - I doubt she had ever heard the expression double declutch let alone know how to do it. Mind you, I would skip the brake upgrade if it meant I had to get rid of those charming little wheels.

I was expecting the same front as a 500. I have sat in a 500 car that has intrusive wheel arches. The 500 was introduced in 1957 that was after the bigger 600 in 1955. There was also the 850 and I saw a cream F reg one in north London last year.

Learnt to drive when i was around 16 years of age in the early 1970 s, off road down local farmers tracks in an identical fiat autobianchi van but origional pale blue colour. All good fun at the time with the crash gearbox untill the bell house casing cracked and the vehicle was scrapped.

My parents had one of these dreadful things. Terrible, terrible little piece of rubbish. If there were three drops of rain, two of them would get into the distributor and it would stall. We were three boys fighting for space in the back seat, with no windows to look out of, so feel free to use the word "claustrophobic" again. The ring handle thing beneath the "dashboard" I seem to remember was actually a hand throttle; could come in handy I suppose in case you wanted to run the little monster off a cliff and jump out in time. I generally love your videos, but this particular one brought no nostalgic feelings for me, only an unruly feeling in my stomach.

Love it. In this day and age where families are smaller, I would gladly give up on the back seats to have 2 front seats + plenty of cargo space behind.

Best thing about this video is passing through Saundersfoot, into New Hedges, and (almost) into Tenby.

Narrow country lanes are the ideal environment for a vehicle like that, and Britain has more than a few of those. ps Because of what a woman I know calls "the bitch in the box" those roads which would have been avoided by non-local drivers now seem to carry much more fast heavy traffic. I wonder whether head-on collisions have increased since every new vehicle has been fitted with GPS and online shopping has become a thing.

I prefer this little van to the fiat 500 , it's much more spacious looking n still really cute. I can imagine it would be nice with an electric motor in the back, making 0-60 mph in 5 secs 🤓

It's lovely. I'd prefer a Fiat 500, but thanks for showing this, Hubnut !

Basically it has terrible brakes, terrible steering, terrible handling, no power, no room inside, no comfort but it looks cute. There are many Hubnut cars that are far from perfect but have other redeeming features. Not this one though.

Austere interior? Never- it is streamlined, purposeful and minimalist. Exactly what is needed, no extras to go wrong. We need more cars like this, save the planet in a trice if all cars were made simple. No triangle of doom then? Great video. This van surely would have been used to deliver bread and veg to places up in those Italian hill towns with the tiny curly streets?
