Great vid! As an ‘83 QV 308 owner (approx same miles) I loved seeing this and would love a carb’d car. I can’t believe they started it with 34 year old timing belts! Gutsy! Looking forward to seeing the paint and refresh.
You mean design by Pininfarina, Scaglietti built I think and another Interesting classic Ferrari find video, thank you! (Another Modena serviced car...)
The one at Ian Tyrell's was good from afar but far from good! Lets hope this one was cared for and shows less rust beneath the surface. Both project will be great to see once completed.
Fascinating discovery. 20 years ago when I bought my 1977 308 GTB the vetro cars commanded about a 30-50% price premium and the gap has only gotten bigger. Some good historical information on this video. Thank you for sharing.
I love the way these are now ‘Veteroresina’ 308’s... they were always ‘fibre glass’ and as I remember mostly unloved. Now they are exotic and rare... and as one of the previous comments says ... rust wrapped in plastic!! I’m being an old cynic. Beautiful car! Needs love !! Arrivederci... as they say...
Yes the whole 'vetroresina' thing is quite recent. I have been looking at adverts for 308s for years and only fairly recently has that word become common in English magazines.
After seeing Tyrell’s classics workshop restoration on one of these I’d definitely remove the front section of bodywork and check for rust what they found on one of these was truly scary as a lot of the main structures were rusted and it was a potential death trap also rust showed on the exact same part of the door pilar apart from that it looked sound 😳
In love with the 308 since I saw it for the first time in Magnum PI. A man's got to have dreams....For all you Ferraristi's out here: have an original in box, unopened kit of the Testarossa by Robbe for anyone that's interested. Including all the options like the 480S tuned motor and the lights-set.
As a previous poster mentioned Ian Tyrrell has a very rusty one in at the moment, but I would hope this one having been dry stored for so many years is a completely different story. I have yearned for one of these most of my life and think the owner is a very lucky guy!!!. If it were mine I would do exactly the same thing as him and also get some waxoyl or similar injected into the chassis tubes to preserve it. I think its best to preserve as much originality as possible with these pieces of Ferrari history. Then I would use it sparingly on nice sunny days. These things have to be driven;-]
The front end where the radiator sits is probably all rusted out and under the fiberglass is probably rusted out too, thanks to the Iain tyrell video I learned that the other day
thats where my Boxer has rusted to. The rad is out of this 308 so I will check closely tomorrow. Fortunately it was stored inside so hopefully the frame survived better.
@@a1topdog after seeing Iain tyrells video I’m surprised too after seeing how rusted the steel frame was on that car and how many repairs had to be made
Recently one of these fiberglass 308s was featured on Tyrrell's classic workshop. It was shocking how much structural rust the car had under the fiberglass body panels.
The first car poster on my bedroom wall was a 308GTB. And seeing these old classics still alive reminds me of how much I still love them. It's a subconscious thing I suppose. Great vid.
2:26 Even the cutaway diagram has a broken popup headlight! I guess Ferrari was trying to give owners a hint at what they should expect :-) Kidding aside; I'm happy to see this 308 getting some much needed love.
I remember 40 odd years ago sitting in a traffic jam in Liverpool city centre, behind a Hillman Hunter or similar and thinking to myself "That number plate has got to be worth something". The plate was... GTB 308F. Back in the day when number plates had proper numbers. Oh, and letters! have searched for it since, but it no longer appears to exist on the Gov.uk database
What a great find! Didn’t know the first 308 were fiber glass. Awesome engine sound also, can’t you get that sound out of your own 308 with throttle bodies or something? I’m so looking forward to see the BBI finished too. Enjoying every video ;)
The 308's have been one of my favourite car models scince i got a model one as a kid. Just checked and the later steel body ones aren't unrealistically priced, might own one in the future :D
Tyres - Plenty of tread but now fully age hardened to be deadly - will pass an MOT but likely end up in a hedge backward if ever driven in anger. A visit to longstone is a must
My grandpa buy a 308 quattrovalvole from factory back in the day.. she was california blue ( pretty rare ). He sold it in 2015 to an scotish collector. Oh i forgot to say it but the car was in Switzerland (my country) and has 23’099km. ;)
I recognize the road around Lake Garda I live not far from there, they filmed the opening scene of Quantum of Solace. Great roads for driving although full of slow German tourists in summer!
A full restoration it deserves it , I just like my cars pristine I now there only original once but a sympathetic restoration is still a restoration I restored my 911 a few years ago body work respray wheels and just tidied up inside and everytime someone got into her they would say when are you doing the inside
I'm surprised at the amount of miles on it with no cracks in the fiberglass. That alone is amazing as with the old fiberglass Corvettes you have way more cracking and spidering on those bodies with far less mile examples than this. With the type of restoration the owner is doing it's obvious it's going to be enjoyed again maybe not as much miles on it but what he's chosen to do is the right redo.. not full restoration with that amount of miles.
We can’t help but think, the steel chassis needs investigating and redoing at least with some modern day protection before contemplating throwing money at the exterior, interior and engine. As always, love the Chanel Scott. ✌🏼
I’d do exactly what the owner is doing on this one. Frame and fiberglass spot repair, good repaint, make it beyond good but not a garage queen, it shouldn’t be nut & bolt resto. Love it.
I knew someone called Harry that owned one of these in the 80s in the Notts area, I noticed this one was service on Loughborough road. Be interested to know if this was his.
The joint on the A pillar is the tell tale sign to tell the difference from the fiberglass cars to the steel cars , you would think that Ferrari would have done a better job hiding that Damn tires from 85 depending on the month they might be older than me
Funny little note, that line down the side, that sort of C channel type thing, that was a molding line between the two halves of the car for the fiberglass, and theirs actually another one in canada, the cold war motors guy was working on getting it running for a customer, also look how inset the bumpers are at 1:30, like their non existent and I hope that's not a habit at 7:37, like I dont know what the laws are in that location, but here, double lines mean do not pass, and theirs no run off if that goes wrong. but still what happened that this well loved car got put away like this, did he buy an 87 Quatrovalve, as one of the funniest things I've heard is that actually, the latter quattro cars are better than the early fiber ones as the weight balance is better, and the cars are faster and more powerful. as both James May and Harry Metcalf had, and sold both of them, Harry bought the testarossa, and loves the hell out of it, even though it was down on half a bank with its worn distributor for the longest time, including when it was on the grand tour which means it didnt get a fair test of how it would have been when new and james well, he had an old overthink crisis and put the thing fully back to stock, including the 14 inch wheels, instead of the upgraded 15's which makes a hell of a difference in how well they drive apparently and then was like, well this cars not that good and I'm kinda bored with it like preversely, ferrari actually made the 308 better as time went on lol still though the other thing is, these cars, well, each one is different, maybe this one has more power than both their glass fiber cars, as per the nature of handbuilt cars. if it was me, honestly the icon for me is the targa model, so I'd have to go with your black beater that you bought from the set of the hidden over it and sell it for that, also from 1987 ish lol although I probably wouldnt say that after driving it lol or either really lol as this one, I gotta say gives off good vibes, weirdly just even looking at harry's and James I had the feeling they were both mingers, this one, evidently might be a good one. I mean look at that mileage, and its condition, 80K miles and it was kept up this well, someone REALLY loved this thing, and you dont love a piece of junk like that.
Yes tyrrell have one..its rotten underneath all that fibreglass. Shockingly dangerous that one. They pointed out the rot by the screen. It lead them to properly investigate. Not that I am saying these guys haven't checked.
How's the chassis? I think I'm falling in love with the older version of this car from the 70s. Really nice. I think doing right by it and drive it here and there.
The fibreglass cars around around 300 lbs lighter than the steel cars.. that was the reason that they started getting more popular.. Ferrari Club racers wanted the light weight bodies.. unfortunately, that means that a lot got Turned into race cars and damaged,
