The critically endangered Santa Marta Sabrewing Hummingbird is one of the world’s rarest birds. It was feared to be lost until Yurgen Vega spotted one in 2022 while looking for a species of parakeet in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia.
Thanks to a collaboration between the local indigenous community, SELVA, ProCAT Colombia, Universidad Nacional Colombia, the World Parrot Trust and the American Bird Conservancy, the bird has been under study for the past year and a half. But there is much more work to be done to define the extent of this current population.
The location of this rare hummingbird is currently off limits to tourism and the area is not yet ready to be visited by birders. Hummingbird Spot is proud to be supporting the research on the Santa Marta Sabrewing and we were happy to be granted access to show you pictures and video of this marvelous bird. Hopefully this area will be opened up for everyone in the near future, but much still has to be worked out with the local communities in order to benefit them while ensuring the protection of the hummingbird.
