Rare black wolves in northern Minnesota

Some neat footage of the few black wolves that spent time in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem (GVE) over the past year. Black wolves are very rare in the GVE and all these black wolves were lone wolves that were wandering around/through the GVE.
In other words, they weren’t part of a pack. We studied 24 packs this past winter and there was not a black wolf in any of those packs. And this was the same for last year and the year before.
In fact, the last time we had a black wolf in a pack we were studying was 2016. Some estimates indicate black wolves constitute 1-3% of all wolves in Minnesota. In our area, black wolves constitute less than 1% of the population.
However, we know in some areas of northern Minnesota, such as around the Ely/Tower area, black wolves can be a bit more common.
One other good way to look at this: we have observed and/or tagged 168 pups during our research so far and not a single one has been black.

Didn't realize how small the percentage is! A black one was spotted around the east side of Lake Mille Lacs early last winter. 😎✌️

Yes, I think the black ones are more common down in more central MN versus up in the Natl park

Thank you for these videos. It gives me hope. What is Canada’s policy on wolves? Do they allow murdering them like some states do?

Wasn't there a pack that was most or all black wolves about maybe 3 to 5 years ago? Or was that a video someone in Minnesota shared with y'all now that I think about it? Edit: nevermind, I found the video and that pack wasn't in your study area.

👍 Wow! What a beautiful big specimen. It very much resembles the half-wolf tame one we had when I was young...and he was gorgeous!

You know when you just look at coat texture, length and shape the black wolf is not very different from the "multi colored" "wolf dog" I am betting on simply a color morph for both. We have white wolves, black wolves...why is a multi colored wolf so odd? The black wolves have the longer denser coat with the cheek ruffs. The fur is the only thing that makes the "wolf dogs" face look rounder. The black wolf has the cheek ruffs too. If you look at eye position, length of about, ear placement...the are the same as the "smooth" coated wolves.

I have a genuine question. If the genetic black gene “K” locus is the dominant gene in wolves then how are black wolves rare? I know being genetic black doesn’t mean have a black coat, however I would think that they would be more common than they are. Kk and KK= genetic black and kk= genetic gray. “K” is the dominant gene and “k” is the recessive gene.
@SilkySifaka89
@SilkySifaka89 27 дней назад
All KK (two dominant allele) wolves die before birth or soon after birth. I don’t know why, but that’s just how it works. So the only living black wolves have the Kk allele

@princessofthecape2078

Uh... they aren't rare at all. Black wolves are an indication of partial hybridization with domestic dogs. If anything, black wolves are a sign of an unhealthy wolf population under extreme pressure. And for that reason, you see a lot of them in the U.S.
@jijitters

You should read the description before trying to argue ;) They are extremely rare in the area where this project is located.

Black wolves don’t really have anything to do with dogs. Sure, the gene came from dogs, but that was a looonng time ago. Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation on this topic. It makes complete sense that in some areas, like Yellowstone, there are around 50% black wolves and 50% gray wolves because of how the K locus genes work. It would take too long for me to explain here, so just go search up a REPUTABLE source about the K locus. Theres a video from the “wolfquest” game youtube channel which explains it nicely. If there’s one thing you take away from this comment, it should be that black wolves don’t really have anything to do with dogs. Black wolves are just as much of a wolf as gray wolves are.

That is only two. Which is certainly a rarity considering the natural population of vital native wolves that are meant to exist in North America.
