*RARE* Blue Blubber Jellyfish Tank --The Aquarium King--

The blue jelly’s unique appearance makes it one of the more exotic jelly specimens currently available to home aquarist. They have become increasingly popular as pets in the Eastern hemisphere because of their almost “other worldly” look and their abundance. Unlike moon jellyfish, blue jellies are translucent rather than transparent. They do not have that eerie, floating ghost-like appearance when light flows through them. They look, however, equally stunning under an LED fader. The combination of their globular shape, they way they swim, their pearlescent reflection, and the colored light passing through their semi-transparent bodies makes them resemble the globules in a lava lamp. They also look great under T5 and actinic lighting. They come in a variety of colors including white, red, blue, purple, and yellow with hues of contrasting accent shades.
It should be understood that blue blubber jellyfish have a symbiotic relationship with the algae growing inside them and are reliant on them for a vital portion of their nutritional needs. If you intend on trying to keep them as pets, they will require an aquarium light set up akin to that of a coral reef tank. This will help keep them alive and healthy.

I saw one several years ago while walking along a seawall. A rather large one, and it was quite a lovely thing. It was mid-afternoon, and it’s blue color was striking against the murky waters. It almost seemed like it was just taking a stroll in shallow waters.

Lovely video! Thanks. Want to mention that there is conflicting information/research out there about blue blubber jellies being photosynthetic. We have kept them successfully under both reef capable lighting and in a basement that is pitch black unless someone is working there. We haven't seen any difference. Spotted jellies are similar to the blubbers definitely need reef lighting.

You can’t feel the moon jellies because there nematocysts are not strong enough to penetrate through your skin.

Blubber Jellyfish are one of the more difficult to keep jellies. Moon Jellyfish or Atlantic Sea Nettles are a great beginner option. Blubber Jellyfish do not have a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, so they are not photosynthetic. They really just love to eat, all day every day. Its important to feed them a live food such as baby brine shrimp or rotifers. Breaking it up into small feedings throughout the day helps them digest their food and make the most use of it. By keeping them well fed, we've had many clients keep these jellies long term successfully.

I didnt know moon jellies and sea nettles have zooxanthellae I thought only few like upside down jellyfish and the jellyfish that are trapped in a single lake are photosynthetic

awesome. what kind of filtration and water quality do they need?
@canadajellyfishaquariums6629
@canadajellyfishaquariums6629 7 лет назад
Pretty much the same as any other salt water fish tank. We have our blubber aquarium running on a regular canister filter. It's not so much the filtration that's different in keeping jellyfish, it's the aquarium. Jellyfish tanks (in general) have a gentle laminar flow pattern and some means (diffuse screen or grate & spray-bar) of keeping the jellyfish out of the filter. Jellies generally don not do well in traditional aquariums. You can buy a proper jellyfish tank or with some simple modifications, you can convert a standard (tall) aquarium into a jellyfish tank.

All jellyfish do except from select few like blanket jellyfish, the question you should be asking is how potent their venom is.

The blue blubbers definitely have a small sting to them that you can feel. However, the moon jellyfish (Aurelia spp.) has a small sting that you often can't feel through the dead layers of your skin.
