This video shows a rare phenomenon: an adult common swift bird eating and drinking on its own.
Ususally, common swift birds will not do this and have to be fed manually, which requires a lot of experience by the feeding person (see our youtube.com videos on "how to feed an adult swift" and "how to feed a young swift" for more information).
However, this fella eats and drinks on its own.
This video was taken at the swift clinic in Frankfurt, Germany. For more information on common swifts and the swift clinic, visit www.apusapus.net (Please note: Content is available in German at this time only. We are currently working on an English version.)

I rescued one, and he lived with me for 1,5 years. Then something happened, he disappeared from the basket standing on the bench in the yard. I was looking for him all night sleeping on this bench, and looking for him everywere for several days. I don't know what happened. But he lives in my heart forever, some part of my heart is he, my sweet Swift

Swifts really like flying, heck they fly for more than half of their lifespans. Him leaving you and flying somewhere is most likely for the better as they don't like living in houses and such.

I have raised 3 already and got another injured baby here with me, I never got them to eat willingly, I always have to force feed them, but they did survive and flew with the flock. I feed mine mealworms and crickets and maybe sometimes grasshoppers, to anyone who needs advice, ps don't give them water as babies they might die, they get their water from the insects they eat. I always feed the worms and give them water before feeding them to the swifts. Happy parenting, oh and they eat every hour. They eat less than half a teaspoon when younger and 3/4 of a teaspoon when older. Remember keep them warm when it is cold and check the temperature frequently. Happy parenting 🌸

It's very kind of you to share those tricks and knowledge. Can you share more about the release? When does one knows they are ready to go, do they need to pratice flight before or is it instictive (I already catch them doing streches and push up with their wings etc), and also if you can share how to release them, the best hour, place. I thought about releasing them when a flock passed by but this year apparently they are all gone the grown Ups, there were unfortunely a lot of nesta destroyed around here.
@greglevandoski2983

@@ritatocta7583 Most swift species nest in caves, chimneys or other cavities. Once the young leave the nest they do not return. Flight is instinctive and they are ready to go (if healthy) when all their flight feathers are fully developed (the sheathing along the feather shafts is gone). You are correct that it would be good to release them when others of their species are nearby, especially if you notice your bird reacting to their calls.

My gf brought a very young bird home 7 days ago and I tried my best looking after him. I bought some crickets after identifying the bird species and tried to feed him. Turned out those birds are the hardest to care for but my gf helped me "force" feed him by opening his mouth as he would refuse to eat. After 2 painful days of force feeding it, the little bird complained and refused to hold his head still. I tried giving him a cricket with a tweezer, low and behold, he started to pick it and swallow it on his own. He got so good at it, that he listens to a feeding whistle I make he then immideately stands up and is ready for food. Im still not sure how old he is as he still has his fur on his back but feathers are slowly piercing out of it. I just hope I feed him enough as I could not find anything on the cricket size on the entire internet. Only that you have to feed him around 41% of his body weight daily, wich is nearly impossible with crickets that fit in his mouth. I hope hell make it as this little guy has grown on me. He also does not want to leave my side and I need to force him into his nest I build for him at night, only with alot of complaints from the loud unhappy guy that is not happy alone. I actually suspect that he will never be fully developed as he does not seem to act like a normal bird for his age. As he can barely stand or keep his eyes open but he loves to run around and he always try to fly by opening his wings, flapping them and jumping from things. He apparently does not understand that hes only around 17 days old tops.

@TsukiShia: Just put the swift on your hand, raise your arm ("statue of liberty position") and wait for the take-off. If the swift doesn't take off after at most 30 seconds, there's always something wrong with the bird.

I got a 24 day old chick, found hiding under a parked car outside my home in the road, I didn't want to put it back in used nest just in case parents or parent kicked it out of nest or got scared of me messing with their nest. Have been feeding it crickets, maggots, dried freshwater shrimp, spiders and flies i catch from house and garden, cat food and pasted peanuts, all mashed and chopped up, equal weights of everything, made gooeey with bird vitamin and mineral solution. A pea sized amount held just in front of its beak and it goes for it, sometimes getting in its throat, sometimes not. first week it was trying to take the food itself but i had to force open its beak and put it in their myself, after 2 weeks it could take the food for itself, but only after i had perservered wioth holding the food near its beak for amounts of time. It worked it out for itself, now i can feed it in less than 2 mins. it prefers to sit in my hand when feeding it, fastest feeding time for me is when its in my hand, it takes much longer tryna do it other ways, it gets awkward intentionally, in my hand it gulps it up fast. Also keep the food near its beak so it has to stretch its neck up, and slightly above its beak, that way when it grabs it its head is tilting backwards already so the food goes to its throat more easily, then they work out to tilt head back and it puts the food at beginning of its throat.

Thanks for sharing, I wish I had read this when I found mine. Now I'm feeding them worms with orlux remiline (I mix with bottled walter) and they are doing fine. Can you please share more how was the release (supposing there was one). They are eager to fly although by their size they are not ready yet I think. Thank you!

Is it possible to teach a young but already adult swift to eat in this way? A beautiful young bird came to a nearby foundation, unfortunately it has a developmental defect and will never fly. We manage to feed him by putting food into his beak, we don't have to push food deep, and it willingly swallows small portions, but unfortunately he opens his beak very reluctantly. Is there any way to teach him this? In general, he behaves well, combs his feathers, even walks around the aviary on short legs, we want to give him a chance to live, but if he opened his beak it would be easier for everyone.

That's very kind of you! I realize this is old, but look up if it might be a fledgeling! If it is, you don't need to pick it up-- it might just be learning to fly and its mother is nearby. Just look for a nest it might have fallen out of? There are guides for this sort of thing, in case it isn't really abandoned or in need of help!
@IndiaHawker
@IndiaHawker 6 лет назад
May be wrong but think this is incorrect - swifts are unable to take off from the ground and therefore a baby on the ground/fledgeling that fledged a little bit early can't be fed by mum on the ground and will need a bit of help getting back up to a high enough place to take off from
@hukhay
@hukhay 4 года назад
@@IndiaHawker this is correct. A swift on the ground is a death penalty for the bird. We need to help them by picking them up, then preferably contact a vet who understands in that kind of bird to check it. If it's an adult it might be injured. If it's a young bird who left the nest too soon, then it needs to be taken care of until it is strong enough and ready to be released. Blessings!

Swifts are insectivores and catch 100% of their food in flight. So in the wild they only eat flying insects. Please remember to seek out a professional wildlife rehabilitator for help if there is one in your area. Aerial insectivore populations are crashing worldwide, so we need to get these birds healthy and re-released into the wild as soon as possible.

In case anyone founds himself in the same situation you can open his beak to feed him, not too strongly because you don't want to break it but gently but your nail to open it. From my experience they don't need direct water. The best is bird food admnistrated with a needle (plastic One, not the metal part of course) you make a liquid paste and give it to them. If you don't have a needle, just try with something else like the handle of a small spoon etc. In this case for example a Swift should eat an insectic bird food (I've used from the brand Orlux remiline with good results, mixing it with bottled walter, if you use tap water boil it first, but don't feed them too warm!! Be careful). But in an emergency I've heard you can give them good quality cat food (Purina for example) and that's what I've gave them in the first day. Good luck to anyone helping a Swift ❤️
