A very old pencil sharpener, beaten up, painted over and dirty...
An interesting detail caught up my attention - although the name is "Chicago", and that model was introduced by "Automatic Pencil Sharpener Company" based in Chicago, IL, in 1915, that particular device had been made by Canadian company "Grand and Toy" which was founded in 1882 by James Grand as a home-based stationery printing business in Toronto, Canada. A year later Grand partnered with his brother-in-law, Samuel Toy, to open their first retail store. By 1982, when the company celebrated its centennial anniversary, Grand & Toy had 35 locations. [Wikipedia]
The first branch store opened in 1926. That gives me a feeling that this sharpener should be from around 1920 -1930 and had been made under some license or agreement.
I decided to restore it and use it in my office, but to keep its appearance as close to original as possible. I kept most of cast marks intact, just removed largest ones. Used nickel plating as chrome plating was not very common at the time. Also tried to keep colours as close to original as possible. Note that my lights played some tricks with colours, however in real life they are very close to original.
For purists - the original celluloid insert is still inside and can be taken out or even reinstalled so we could see the original part.

I agree with the comments below, but MUST add that using the router in that freehand manner will cost you fingers and a hand, possibly feet as well when you drop the thing and attempt to grab it in free fall before it rampages over your lower limbs! Good work otherwise!

I respectfully disagree. This is a small router, called ‘handheld trimmer’ and it is in fact intended to be used as a freehand tool, for trimming edges of laminated boards. I’ve done that many times and with common sense applied it’s quite safe as there is such a small amount of material has been removed. Still I appreciate your comment, thank you.

Nicely done. But you actually made it less worth by removing original paint, plastic and patina. The more original an old item is, the more it is worth.

It's not intended to be sold or become a collectible. I'm using it in my office - for real. However, as i mentioned - the original insert is still inside. Re-paint the chamber, make it dirty, install original insert - you get the original one :o)
