We were extremely privileged to catch up with legendary guitarist & Redbeard Effects artist Andy Taylor (Reef / ex-Duran Duran) to talk about all things guitar related, during a recording session at the incredible Real World Studios in Wiltshire, England.
In this video Andy tells us about his guitar journey - from cutting his teeth in the Working Men's Clubs of the North East, being inspired by 70s Rock guitarists and making his own unique stamp on the 80s as the guitarist in Duran Duran.
Andy uses the Angry Rhubarb Paradynamic Overdrive MKII and Honey Badger Octave Fuzz.
Thanks to Andy, Reef and Real World Studios for their co-operation in making this video!

My first concert was Duran Duran at the Forum in LA in '84 when I was 13. How I convinced my parents to let me go I will never know. It was so magical. DD ignited my love for music and concerts. My husband just took our 15 year old nephew to his first concert last month. I hope my nephew will be as stoked by his first concert experience as I was and will continue to be inspired by musical artists and the magical concert experience. I saw DD a few years ago at the Hollywood Bowl and I was transported back to my teenage years where anything was possible and dreams were on the horizon. I only wish Andy would have been there too. It's just not the same without him. His guitar riffs and personality can never be duplicated. :(

When he left the band and was absolutely right about the red carpet massacre album it was a disaster ruined with outside influences Andy spoke out he and Nick Rhode had words but Nick alway got his own way. Andy a great lead guitariest rock musican hadnt got a say.. i read his book and got alot of respect back for him im a Duranie through and through from 1981/2. Just sorry he couldnt make it to the ceramony, the rock and roll hall of fame as he has earnt it im devastated for him and his family DD hadnt sound the same from hes left a great loss.

I personally think Andy is one of the most underrated guitar players period. He’s the example of a rocker who was stuck in a new wave band. When he was with Duran you could hear those riffs come out occasionally only to be muffled out by the rest of the band. He was too hard for his band mates.

I dunno. Listen to Arena, he’s very present on that live recording. In the studio, I agree with you, he was somewhat hidden. However , listen to the instrumental version of The Reflex and he’s very much present in the mix. It’s amazing

Have to agree on the one hand that he is criminally underrated by the public and pop culture in a gigantic way. I'm not so sure he was too hard... they simply grew apart stylistically. But in the more recent live shows it's HUGELY evident the difference his playing brings to a song as "simple" as even "Girls on Film"... there are quite a few very good versions of it with other guitarists, but when Andy is inserted back into the track it gels and falls right into place. He's an incredible guitarist.

I'm a Duranie through and through but I must say, Andy is the most humble, the most consistently down to earth member of Duran that there ever was and will be. Andy doesn't need to talk himself up or rave about his achievements. He just flows natural. As a female I find that his lack of "modellizing" and more down to earth nature is so endearing. I know Andy had his moments with the pitfalls of fame and I am grateful for his honesty on that. Though I acknowledge the career minded talents of John Taylor (his tenacity and brain is oft overlooked because of his physical beauty) and of course the musical talents of all - the bass and synth was a brilliant element of the 'Duran Sound' - the bass being my personal favourite, but I would say it is largely Andy's guitar talent that drove Duran Duran to the States and they would be absolutely nowhere without him. Seriously, that Hungry Like The Wolf riff IS the 1980's. Planet Earth. The soaring riffs of New Religion, Save A Prayer... wow.No-one can play Duran songs like Andy and their live performance suffers without him terribly. It actually must have been tremendously hard for Andy as he was rarely (or never?) to my knowledge granted a guitar solo in any Duran Duran track. That's actually insane for such a great guitarist to not be offered that. I am a bass woman myself, but I recognise Andy for his extremely underrated fantastic guitar skill, his honesty, his talent and his Northerner humble and genuine nature which is present to this day despite all the fame... thankyou Andy. All the best and thank you for staying true. Show less

Yes, sad, and many wonder why Andy was driven out of Duran Duran. It seems the rest of the band was reluctant to ever let him do his magic. Maybe with them being inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame, Andy and Duran Duran reunited show will go well and maybe they can consider doing more together again. I know many would love to attend a DD reunion tour with Andy.

I've never met Andy, but met Simon (and Nick, John and Warren) a few times. He was also very cool and down to earth. I was lucky enough to see Duran when Andy came back (I first saw them on the Notorious tour). I think that first sentence is really true. Besides the perfect timing of the MTV Video marketing frenzy, Andy gave Duran the bit of guitar edge they needed to get radio play in the states. His playing was fantastic on those Duran recordings. I agree, wasn’t interested in seeing DD live once Andy left. Was fortunate to see them twice with him in the band (Rio, 7&tRT tours). Also saw Power Station but Micheal Des Barres was sort of a bummer on that tour.

Agree on the breakthrough part especially compared to their new wave peers. That said, Warren also really put his stamp on the records loud and clear (I have so many favourites - the guitar licks in lake shore driving, first impression, white lines, ordinary world, electric barbarella, playing with uranium...). The descent into electronica heavy stuff with the balance decisively to Nick happened the day they stopped having a full time guitarist, AYNIN was good due to the fanboy celeb producer, Paper Gods is where 70% of the songs sounded like EDM!

he has sensitivity to strong light so it makes it difficult when going to shows. When he came back from Duran Duran for the 2nd time he never took off his glasses

Dear Andy, I'm a Duranie from Hong Kong since 1982. I was 16 back then. You and DD's music really truly shaped my youth! I've been wondering is there any chance that you would reunite with DD, even for just once more...? Being an outsider, I have no idea whether there's really so much hatred/misunderstanding between you & other members of DD... All I know is: the clock is ticking... for all of us.

The problem is: He and Nick don`t get along with each other, they never have - they are totally different in their approach towards music and life in general. Andy is vivid and spontaneous, Nick is quite the opposite. Or as a fan once said: In Duran Duran Andy served the beer and the steaks, Nick served the Champagne and the chocolates :-) I love both of them, though :-) There is a little story in "wild boy" about his first encounter with Nick ... Andy tried to start a conversation, showing interest in what Nick was doing on the keyboards - Nick just rose an eyebrow, saying:"Yer so???" - Conversation over ...

@@birgitangermair4483 Thanks so much for the info Birgit. The fact is... DD's first 2 albums plus all the singles affiliated are fine examples of a PERFECT blending of the band's synth & guitar sound. Andy's guitar sound just adds balls to DD's unique musical style. Cheers~

Fantastic interview, I went to a Duran Duran CD signing in about 2004, and just before the band came out they announced Andy wasnt there as he was poorly, I was gutted as you were my favourite band member, would've liked to have chatted with you. Good to see you still doing your thing!

I saw DD in 82 in NYC opening for Split Enz, then later in the month at the Peppermint Lounge, a bit later at the Ritz. Andy's guitar is the DD sound. Nothing against Warren or Dom but when Andy is with the other four something just clicks. He adds the rock element that makes the sound different. I liked the fact that he kept turning up the amp.

It would be nice if Andy or Warren came back as an official member, but I don't think that's going to happen because the band won't kick Dom Brown out. But it would also be good if they called them to participate in the shows or even create a new album together

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this video! Andy is a BRILLIANT guitarist! So many of my favorite Duran Duran songs are from the time when Andy was with the band..he gave an unforgettable rock n roll edge that fit the music perfectly. The same applies to The Power Station, as well as his contribution to Belinda Carlisle's 'Mad About You,' and others no doubt. Yes, a brilliant guitarist - one of the greatest, in my opinion, of all time♥️
