Don't forget that these were discovered in the mint director's collection when she passed away. There is also one example that has been found that didn't have the "tear drop 4". Blows my mind that the mint director blames the coin collecting community for the coin shortage then takes away mint marks. In the meantime she is pumping out special strike coins and putting them in her collection.
I always enjoy watching your channel. You're always throual and I'm not scratching my head afterwards with more questions than I had before I searched. Thank you!
Great you acknowledge the edge I commented on coinhelpu's video where I believe there should be more images shown about this as its a big indicator of this 1964 sms half dollar. The more you can show and acknowledge about identifying such a coin should be out there so people aren't saying they have one without all identifying indicators of such coins. 👍
I don't think there were a billion of the 1964 Kennedy half dollars although it might seem so, there were about 430 million of them minted, which is about half a billion. Love your channel Thanks
Hey Shaun I really think I have the 1964 Kennnedy Half . It’s in a plastic holder , I bought years ago because it s my Birth year. But I’m very new to this hobby. Because of you’re videos, I have found ,I think a lot of coins! From 1 5 gallon water jug. And a couple of coins I bought at a second hand store. Should I take thiscoin out of plastic? To put under my new coin scope??
Their are around 30-50 1964 SMS quarters, which would mean the penny, the nickel, the dime, the quarter and the half dollar all would have the same amount. Im sure some are lost or destroyed but still their is a lot unaccounted for and havent shown up.
I just picked up one of these, I’m comparing Two coins and ONE of them is Really prominent next to the other. WOW! I’m SO happy I watched this video! Idve Never known
Hi Blue ridge. I am a subscriber and I enjoy all you videos and the last year I learn a lot from you. Thank you for your dedication to all of us. Aspassia A. New Jersey
i just found your video. I think i have one. I have two other 1964 silver dollars to compare to. It looks far more brilliant in appearance. The strike looks way more clear. The silver pops out more. Details much more clear. How do I found out for sure?
Does the top of the ear look different to you? It seems more detailed than the business strike in the side by side photos. AWESOME news for another rare coin!
The actual story is, there was a shortage of coins in the 60s due to hoarding, so the mint was to remove silver from coins starting in 1965. Also, to curtail hoarding, they would remove all mint marks from coins, even though all three mints produced coins from 1965-1967. The SMS was produced to allow the Philadelphia mint to produce more business strikes instead of tying up presses for the slow process of proof striking. So a dozen sets were created, and at one time were the possession of one collector. They eventually got broken up and sold off. But no, you're not going to find one of these in loose change or at the table at the local show's bargain bin. People knew these were special for a while now...
After watching your video on the 1964 JFK silver half dollar. I believe I have one very similar to the one you have been talking about.i will send you pictures of my coin
I'm pretty sure I have this, just checked my 64 it has the neck lines u mentioned also sharp edges the 4 had the extra in the cross part also w appear doubled on top,I wanted to tell u thank you for making this video sharing those important details 💪👏,this is definitely going to pcgs now I knew it's a looker of a coin but the sms experiment who knew they r a variety 🤩
I'm sending one off to PGS. I'm sure it's at least an accented hair. But compared to any other coin I've ever seen. The reflection given off is really cool. I'm hoping it grades at least 63 or 64 accented hair. If it comes back as one of these. I'll be happy! But I doubt it. Like I said I'm sending it to be graded cause I'm pretty sure it's an accented hair at least.
haha...speaking of SMS, somebody had a two page advert in coinworld this week for 1965-67 SMS sets for ONLY $160!!! what a bargain! the 1966 set is ONLY $145...pass me my straightjacket and checkbook...
I have a coin just like that 👍 my Dad ,got it for me when I was born 👍 and I still have it looks great where could I take it to see how much it's worth it's in very good condition and it looks brand new and shiny so where could I take it and not get ripped off I would love to no
I have a set of 1964 coins including the half dollar my parents bought a proof set for each of us the year we were born, Blessed me. Where should I bring it to have it appraised
Hello. I have a similar proof like 64 quarter with the CNC cut lines down Kennedy's neck. Very nice coin. Part of an inheritance from my grandfather, who was a co-founder of a local bank. Needless to say he picked special coins for his personal collection. How do I research this quarter? Thank you, Kenny
Whoops!🎈 😎. I’m ready now to go! Kennedy 1964 how about that 12 examples even, this is very new to me .Nice Info. I like it & looking right at the coin, good camera shot. Thank You BlueRidgeSilverhound! 🎈👍👍🎈👍V
I Shaun... I love your channel, I learned a lot about US coins... I collected a couple coins since last 17 years... I think I have one very similar, looks like pink color mix w/brown have errors that you mentioned on this video, is different than the other I have. Also have other error on the bottom of the "I". I would like to have your opinion like expert. Thank you and Happy New Year.
Sean,I've followed yr coin blog n yr knowledge of coins r very extensive. I am needing yr advise as to send a coin in my possession for grading. I've a 1965 KENNEDY half dr without mint mark n in very good condition. I hear a lot of PCGS grading can u advise me how do I go about getting my coin appraise? Thk U, hoping u.will acknowledge my request. Albert
I have such a coin. It was in circulation. Fortunately, the time is quite short, as you can see on it, but it is not battered. Personally, I think it's the most beautiful American circulation coin of the twentieth century. The more I learn about it, the more closely I look at it. I'm seeing more and more anomalies on it and I'm starting to wonder if it's worth sending it for a professional assessment and risking unnecessary expenditure of money because it seemed to me something. U.S. coins are a difficult subject for an amateur from Europe.
I got a 1964 D and it has the file marks under his ear the whole strike is extremely sharp I would grade it pretty high it has a few light scratches but nothing bad like it was in a roll maybe once or twice almost looks new
Great Video thank you very much.. I recently inherited a coin collection from my grand Dad and there is a Half dollar on a Necklace set and it has very sharp edges and and the little teardrop underneath the 4. Who would i send pictures to to verify the coin due to me living in Germany..
I have two of these with the lines under his ear and on his neck and they match the ones on my 66 67 SMS sets also the markings on the 4 and the doubling on the W I’ve never known that was anything special about them until I just watched this video I had noticed a long time ago that they had those lines on the neck and cheek just like the 66 and 67 but thought that’s how they all were
I have one kinda looks like the one on the right, it kinda looks like a mirror coin but not gonna say it's proof because that is a big word to say, and it has a lot of micro skratches, thoug it doesn't have that double strike thing. well I really wish if it was an SMS coin, not to sell it, but to have something kinda special 😊
I was born June 11th 1964. A woman that I met gave me one for my birthday. This point has not been processed through people at all. It's excellent condition. What could you tell me to be able to get it checked where? Thank you for your help I appreciate you very much.
Yes - they refer to them as “ rays “ And the “ accented “ hair that ( supposedly Jackie O ) did not approve of and asked to have changed . ( look It up )
Hey Blue Ridge. Your videos have been very helpful.. definitely a useful resource. Only been collecting for a few month's but i gotta say, when the bug bit I was all in. And I Still am. Ive been to like 200 banks coin roll hunting. ANYWAYS. Still very much a rookie I've gotta question for you. The brown hue around the edges of the obverse...? I have a 1971 (0% silver..examined edge and weighed) that's covered entirely in this cool brownish-red hue...So..what is it called? (If its called anything) Is it a good thing? Is it a natural process?... or did it spend most of its life at the bottom of a septic tank? And for the record. I not asking If the coin is worth anything. I know it's not. I'm just here for the knowledge buddy. So if its the ladder and I should go wash my hands. Id appreciate the heads-up.. Cheers..
I really believe I have an experimental 1964 Kennedy! I never have the golden goose ... lol, but I after hours of comparison to your example and studying my coin, I do believe it’s the same. Where would you recommend I go from here?
I picked up a roll a week ago. I couldn't believe what I was seeing in the middle of a 72 coin was a letter 2.. it looked like what they call a sm. Date number two. After looking at it underling a microscope, it's so clear I have heard some strange things come out of the mint, have you ever heard of anything like this? Where do I go to have this checked maybe a new rare error?
Happy Easter BRSH. My brother is getting married in few hours so gotta be quck with my question. The coin in your video is Auction#1239 Lot#5545 sold at HA 9/7/16 which shows serifed I in liberty..dangled 4 in date of obverse indictive of a normal non-accented strike....reverse shows broken rays 11-13 & straight G. Now onto Auction#1114 Lot#2704 sold 7/30/08 at HA..obverse has serifed I but no dangled 4...reverse shoes broken rays & straight G. Both reverses are the type 1 & both obverse show normal strike. My question is would a 64 example with the type 1 reverse be considered a SMS or SP(specimen)?? I have 3 examples with type 1 reverse & 1 was confirmed to be a straight G. 4 examples with solid rays & flaired G. What are your thoughts???? Thank you in advance for any info & may you have a Blessed Easter!!

I stumbled across your post on the '64 dollar with the edge ect....... I think I've got one! My great grandfather gave me it around 45 years ago. I have images I could send you to see what you think? Ps, thanks for the presentation, I've sub'd too😎🙏. Dx
I know its true because I have one w/all diagnostics. I may also have a nickel. Can you please tell me where can I get the diagnostics for the nickel. I have the square/sharp rim and the finish but there has to be more. I can not be that lucky..... can I ??
I have a 1964 D P JFK Silver Half Dollar. It has small mint mark in the Obverse lower right side of the 9 in 1964 and in the Reverse no mint mark which mean from Philadelphia. Gilroy Roberts design the Obverse of the 1964 JFK Silver Half Dollar and Frank Gasparro design the Reverse of 1964 JFK Silver Half Dollar. Therefore in my conclusion this coin of mine is a Prototype Coin or Experimental Coin because it's a Transitional Coin.
I have one 1964 JFK half Dollar coin in a very good condition..it weight 11.5 grams with accented hair..my problem is I don't know where to sell it..I'm from the Philippines.
I have one 1964 JFK half Dollar coin with accented hair with complete markings..it weight 12.5 grams..my problem is where to sell it,should i take a picture on it..please tell me what to do..I'm from the Philippines..I've already send one comment and got an error on the weight of my coin it is 12.5grams instead of 11.5 grams..please replying
I have 4 uncirculated silver half dollars. They are all from the D mint. Two of them have the straight G on the back side under the right leg of the eagle and the broken rays where the stars meet. They are in beautiful condition. What do you think the value would be for the two with the straight G and broken rays? Thank you for your time and sharing your video.
I do have one MS 70 QQOR. It's a unique coin, the surface is textured, when you get close ups on it, it almost like a pitting. It's rough & smooth. But, when you photo it, it can look perfectly like a regular cameo or like crap. It's very unique. On mine it has 2 die bumps under the four. One is very clear, the other falls into to the texture of the finish. Hard to explain. Very difficult to photo because, they all come out looking different!
I love how nobody, not even graders, notice glaring fingerprints on coins with really low example numbers. SPS 67. I have common pennies with that many fingerprints that would never hit 67 by anyone's interpretation.
You could possibly take those prints and track down the name or even person if still alive. Gives it character sometimes and sometimes it makes it less than.
