In his 1912 diary, on a bright April day in Livadia, Nicholas II wrote:
"23 April. Sunday. The weather turned out wonderful on the Name Day of my dear Alix.At 10 1/2, in front of the house, there was a parade of all the garrison parts, then obednya, greetings by all and a big breakfast. then obednya, greetings by all
and a big breakfast. Everything ended at 2 o'clock.... Alix got a headache and went to bed earlier."
This rare film footage is a snapshot of the moments described in the Tsar's diary entry. Beautifully colourised by Kirill Mituygin, it makes you feel part of the events that took place on this Crimean Spring morning.
Thanks for watching!

The colorizing really brings the scene to life. I don't understand people who think colorizing is a bad thing.

Such magnificent etiquette. No-one feels embarrassed to recognize his/her superiors. I like the way some of the women kiss the tsarina. Today amongst the Royal families of Europe the same etiquette is followed. Those who are truly good and gracious don’t mind one bit curtsying or bowing, no matter what their station in life is. I’ve heard people question such etiquette and complain about it. Not so long ago children were taught to properly acknowledge their elders (and betters, as they were called.). But then, I’m very old. My grandmother was a Victorian……

It was horrifying... but do not forget so was Nicholas II's mismanagement of the Russian Empire. Poverty, disease, famine, war, corruption: he drove it into the ground, aided by Alexandra, ignoring the pleas of millions including his own family. When the time came to abdicate, he was than ambivalent, and resigned. His concept of predestination was dark, and the fact remains that the man did nothing to help himself or his children. I hope that both he and the Empress had some moments of cognitive dissonance at Ipatiev, although I doubt it. If the Whites had liberated them, and won the Civil War, and he'd been restored, I don't for a moment doubt he'd repeat all his own mistakes again.

Blame England they could've saved their cousins yet did not. 🙄 the English crown is fked up when it comes to how they turned their backs on family . Look at how Queen Elizabeth treated her uncle who should've been praised for without his abdication she would've never been Queen nor her stuttering idiot of a father could've never been king 🤴. Look how William is treating Harry knowing Princess Diana did not raise them that way . To be snobs or stuck up fked up royals like their father.

@@kaleahcollins4567 You must remember the bolshies even in England were only looking for an opening and excuse for upheaval, if the King brought his relatives to England,there was the excuse,it would have plunged the country into a bloodbath as never seen before,and the country would now be communist, also the king no more than anyone else was a mind reader, no one thought the Royal family would be murdered, put the blame where it is well deserved the Bolshies in case you don't know ,the king had arranged to bring them to England earlier,had a ship on standby but the 4 girls came down with a very virulent dose of scarlet fever,were near death so couldn't be removed, that is why in later pictures of their captivity, they have tightly shorn heads,almost bald, poor creatures suffered badly by the hands of their captors, no blame attached to the king or queen
@traveller8867
@traveller8867 2 года назад
@@kaleahcollins4567 You are entitled to your opinion and here is mine: The King did send a ship and the children all had measles and couldn't leave and then the British government determined that rescue would be too risky due to the fear of this revolution spreading, personal feelings aside. Queen E's, uncle David was a Nazi sympathizer with open communications with the Third Reich and there was a plot by the Third Reich to install David back on the throne in exchange for their assistance. David also dumped the crown responsibilities on her family. Many people thought that he just didn't want the responsibilities of the Crown to begin with. Also, just because Queen E's father stuttered doesn't make him an idiot. In fact, he was very dedicated to the UK and very popular with the people. He had served in the Navy during a war and reigned during WWI and worked closely with his staff and his counterparts to help defeat the Nazis. Harry has treated the Queen and Prince Philip as well as other members of RF and many citizens of the UK badly and not the other way around. It's fortunate that William was born first.

Really? Why? She was the root cause of 75% of the family's suffering. With her extremely Introverted personality, super-religious beliefs, and the parading of her zealous friendship with Rasputin, she was a Very Poor Choice of tzarina, who contributed significantly to the family's downfall.

And she was Romanov only by marriage. She was raised in Germany and a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. One of her biographies I read included a picture of Alix smiling, with a caption noting how rare a smile from Alix was. Look again at the many photos of her. See any smiles?
@emcc8598
@emcc8598 2 года назад
@@michaeljarosz4062 Tbf Much of what is said about Alexandra comes from others in the Romanov family who disliked her before she even became empress. This included her mother in law who had wanted Nicholas II to mary someone else As Alexandra's no 1 detractor the Empress Maria Feodorovna opposed the marriage and seemed to have mainly viewed Alexandra as a rival for Nicholas's affections. Empress Maria Feodorovna and her circle were also reported to have been the source of much of the gossip and innuendo about Alexandra. Regardless of her own shortcomings Alexranda really didn't stand much a chance and this was one of the reasons she further retreated away from the intrigue and plotting of court life She really does seem sad in many of the photos however considering she had lost her Mother and a sibling early in her childhood, had a strict upbringing in England under her British Cousins and her Grandmother Queen Victoria and had arrived in Russia just as the old Emperor lay dying and was capitulated into marriage and Royal life directly after. That and not forgetting the pressure she was under to produce a male heir to the throne after 4 daughters. A heir who they learned suffered from a life limiting condition - haemophilia...

The people of the country were starving and suffering while the royals lived in absolute wealth and luxury at the common person’s expense. What happened to the royal family is awful - especially the young daughters - and I’m by no means justifying it. However, Nicholas and Alexandra were partially to blame for their own demise. They ruled the country horribly, and didn’t care an iota that the people were suffering around them. The people reacted badly, but desperation and despair make people do awful things. It’s awful that the children of Nicholas and Alexandra were murdered in such a brutal and terrifying way, but millions of Russian children were suffering all throughout the country. Serfdom, and its accompanying slave labour, was still rampant throughout society. Nothing justifies murder, but you can hardly blame the people for rising up against the imperial regime, and one thing is for certain - this family was nowhere near holy. Hell, Alexandra took her advice from Rasputin, of all people!

I love how Alexei quickly decides he doesn't want all the courtly hand-shaking and bowing... He slips behind his father, then hides himself behind his mother.

Unprepared is right. Nicholas should never have been Tsar. It should have been his Uncle Nicholasha.

Some of the men look like they were not expecting Nicholas to shake their hands, and it almost looks like he tries to reach out before they bow.

How many of those people -- especially the soldiers -- were alive in 5 or 10 years? What a scene. Thank you for sharing. I wish the camera had been closer so we could have seen people's faces. 10/28/21

What I find amazing is that at this time the Empress Alix already suffered from a heart condition which kept her wheelchair bound for long portions of the day. The next year she would have an almost complete medical breakdown of her health, after her son's near death at Spala, 1913.

If you are in awe of the vplotozation of the film then you probably would. E amazed to learn that a tsar of Russia had a photographer tale snaps in a proces that the bphoyogrspher had developed on his own All he was able to take out of Russia were the snaps and negatives leaving behind his colored photographic equipment.

NEVER seen this before, THANK YOU ;:) This is actually not the same occasion the entire 6 minutes - This can be seen on for example OTMAs hats; they are different in the second half of the clip, compared to in the beginning :)

Definitely TWO separate occasions. You can tell just by looking at the roses in the foreground. In the first half there are no flowers. In the second half (at 3.06) there are a vast number of lovely white roses. Oh, and Alexandra is wearing a different dress (look at the hem one has lace or embroidery inserts, the second one is plainer), and the Grand Duchesses hats are definitely different too.

Germ theory for viruses was only about 20 years old at the time. Hard to say how desperate she would be to wash her hands without a little more research on the time and St. Alix herself first.
